Overview / Welcome

Welcome to another (or your first!) year as a member of the Antioch High School band program! As a member of the band, you are a member the school’s most decorated and respected organizations. As with any other organization, the success of the band depends on the loyalty of ALL of it’s members.

How can YOU show loyalty and accountability to the band? First, by making up your mind to be a proud and worthy band member. Second, by giving the organization all you possess in attention, interest, effort and accountability. Third, by observing the general objectives and procedures outlined in this handbook which are a necessary part of any successful organization. The procedures outlined on the following pages are simple and are in place to promote YOUR success. It is intended that this handbook serve each member of the band with an acquaintance and an understanding of the tradition, policies, and procedures of the Antioch High School Band. There is no place in any outstanding organization for half-hearted participants. Only when every band member cooperates can a band achieve the distinction of being truly outstanding.

Course Expectations / Responsibility

There is not a list of “rules” to be followed, or consequences following such disobedience of rules, but rather a significant list of things you CAN do, or SHOULD be doing, and an overarching concept to tie along with them.

All members are expected to strive to be their personal best, elevate the morale of their peers and their program, and make our goal to be better today than we were yesterday. We will always strive to “seek perfection, and never compromise”. All participants will work as hard as they can while being respectful and respectable young adults. Those are the two objectives…or “rules”…however you want to look at it. Work hard and be respectful. That’s it.

Should any difficulty arise with these objectives, your attention will be directed at the issue and you will be expected to take responsibility and to correct yourself. Should you need additional assistance in correcting a behavior detrimental to the progress of the organization, additional steps will be taken to ensure the success of our group.

Given the fact that you have CHOSEN to be a part of this outstanding organization, we should not anticipate any issues with expectations or responsibility.

Course Objectives By the end of the year, each Antioch High School Band member will be able to: 1. Demonstrate respect for the ensemble and it’s rehearsals. 2. Demonstrate the proper method of playing his / her instrument. 3. Demonstrate ability to be prepared for all rehearsals and performances. 4. Demonstrate the ability to interact responsibly in a large group. 5. Demonstrate characteristics of outstanding self-discipline in all aspects of life.

Grading Procedures

80% Content Standards - attendance at performances, football games, pep rallies, concerts, etc. 10% Literacy Standards - written responses to performances, self-evaluations. 10% Professionalism Standards - punctuality, hard work, respect, good attitude.

Membership Requirements Due to the creative nature of the program and the logistics with drill writing, members MUST commit to being a member of the program for a full year. Members are required to be at ALL rehearsals. This includes summer rehearsals, band camp and after school rehearsals. Missing rehearsals will result in the lowering of the academic grade and potential removal from the program.

Performing Ensembles, etc.

Wind Ensemble: Open to students in grades 9-12 by audition only. This ensemble comprises the most outstanding instrumental musicians at Antioch High School. This group will have a primary focus of preparing the finest literature for the modern wind band. Students in this ensemble should have the desire to be pushed musically and personally beyond the normal standard of the band program. Concert attire for men is standard tuxedos, while women will wear long black dresses. The link to purchase such dress will be made available in the fall.

Symphonic Band: Open to all students in grades 9-12 with prior band experience. This ensemble will concentrate on the continuation of the development of skills such as tone production, rhythmic proficiency, intonation and technical ability. The concert attire for men is all black; dress pants and dress shirt, and black dress pants, black floor length skirt, long-sleeve black dress shirt or blouse for women.

Concert Band: Open to all students in grades 9-12. No prior band experience is necessary, as this group will cater to teaching and improving basic fundamentals.

Marching Band: The AHS Marching Band will strive to be one of the best bands in Middle Tennessee. In order to strive for this excellence, members are required to show a high degree of dedication, effort and pride. The AHS Marching Band performs at home football games, contests, pep rallies and other performance opportunities in the area. Students must 1) attend all rehearsals and performances, 2) contribute to their “fair share” of the band budget through fundraising or individual financial contributions, 3) be enrolled in one of the band classes.

A note on alternates: With any competitive organization, it is necessary to employ a system of alternates. Due to sickness, relocation, and other circumstances, it is necessary to write the field show for fewer students than are on the roster. Alternates will march on an as-needed basis. Alternates will be utilized in the event someone cannot perform due to illness, excessive absences, or has ceased to exhibit the necessary enthusiasm, attitude,

Page 4: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

dedication and achievement needed to be a member of this competitive organization. Alternates must attend all rehearsals and performances, as they are considered full members of the organization and will have duties related to the preparation of the band for performances.

Jazz Ensemble At the current time, Jazz Ensemble is not a registered course offering. Despite this fact, an extra curricular after-school jazz band may be offered to compliment the AHS Music Department.

P.E. Credit Two semesters of Marching Band satisfies the P.E. requirement for graduation.

Individual performance opportunities. Mid-state band, Mid-state jazz band, All-state band, All-state jazz band, Solo and Ensemble, and other honor band or youth orchestra activities provide students with the opportunity to excel individually on their instrument and receive recognition for their musical achievements.

Honor Bands Auditions for the All Mid-State Concert and Jazz bands are held in late November and early December. All students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to audition. Auditions will include a prepared excerpt (available from the director), scales and sight-reading. Students selected for one of the Mid-State ensembles prepare and present a concert in January at the Mid-State conference weekend. The top students from the All Mid-State band could be selected as a member of the All State band and participate in the Tennessee Music Educators Association State Conference in April.

Both the All Mid-State and All State conferences require students be in “good standing” (see below and next page) with the AHS Band program. While students are required to pay a small audition fee for admittance into these ensembles, the cost of conference registration, hotel accommodations and transportation to the conferences for those students selected will be covered completely by the Antioch Music Boosters. Often, colleges and universities use membership in these organizations as partial criteria for music scholarship consideration.

Other “Honor Band” activities, such as the Wind Band Conference at MTSU, may be available to AHS students throughout the year. Either based on audition or application, students will be notified of these events. Students will be financially responsible for all honor band fees outside of All Mid-State and All State.

Definition of “Good Standing” Students wishing to participate in additional ensembles and honors programs, including but not limited to Mid-State Band/Choir, Honor Bands/Choirs, and Winter Guard, must be in good standing. Many of the ‘audition only’ groups require that a student be a “member in good standing” in their own school music program. In order for the director to approve

Page 5: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Definition of “Good Standing”(continued)

a student at Antioch as a “member in good standing” they must meet the following criteria:

• Be enrolled in a music class, if applicable.

• Meet all participation and attendance requirements.

• Meet their financial commitment; account and yearly dues are up to date.

• Students who do not maintain class enrollment or other “good standing” requirements will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular music department trips.

Solo and Ensemble Solo and Ensemble Festival is held in late April and gives students an opportunity to excel individually or with small groups. Students may select their own music or the director will assist in the selection process. Students should allow four to six weeks of preparation time for this festival. As with Mid-State, there is a small entry fee to be paid by the student.

Private Lessons Private lessons are one of the single biggest factors in the growth and development of a band program. The best band programs in the country have a significant percentage of students that study privately on their instrument. Students that study privately show rapid improvement in individual musicianship and thus boost the overall quality of the band program. As students improve, their excitement towards practicing increases, they continue to improve, and the students becomes a stronger contributor to the overall success of the band program.

Private lessons on most instruments are available at Antioch High School from instructors approved by the director. These lessons are scheduled during class or after school. Each private lesson teacher has different policies regarding length of lesson, payment, etc, so contact the teachers directly for additional information. A list of approved private lesson teachers is available from the director.

Extra Curricular Performance Opportunities While we encourage “outside” performance opportunities, participation in these ensembles not affiliated with AHS will be considered as an “Extra Curricular” activity. If there is a scheduling conflict, you are expected to attend the Antioch rehearsal or performance. Absences from an AHS rehearsal or performance will NOT be excused to participate in and outside ensemble and will be reflected in your overall grade.

Page 6: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Attendance ALL REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE MANDATORY. The band follows a regular rehearsal schedule and any changes to the schedule will be announced in advance. This allows students to plan other activities and obligations around our schedule.

Punctuality is a trait that will serve you well in any endeavor. “To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late!” Plan to arrive well in advance of the scheduled call time for rehearsal or performance. The Antioch Band has a limited amount of rehearsal time as compared to other groups against which we compete. It is essential that we make efficient use of the rehearsal time we have.

Absences from rehearsals or performances will be unexcused unless they meet the following: a. Personal illness - doctor’s note required b. Death in the family c. An emergency d. Special permission of the director obtained IN ADVANCE by the parent or guardian.

The following are NOT excuses for missing rehearsals or performances: a. Work b. Homework / Projects c. Social opportunities

Students must exhibit consistent responsibility in these areas. Excessive absences for any reason may result in being removed from marching status.

The regular rehearsal schedule for marching band during the school year (times subject to change) is as follows:

Monday 2:30-4:00pm (periodic Monday’s, not every week) Tuesday 5:30-9:00pm Thursday 5:30-9:00pm Friday Home Football Games (4-5 per season) Saturday Competitions (4-5 per season), Rehearsals (2-3 per season)

Additional sectionals will be required and will be at the discretion of the section leader.

Rehearsals It is super important that all rehearsals be productive and positive in order for our goals to be reached. The following guidelines will ensure we will reach and surpass our goals

Page 7: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Rehearsal Procedures: 1. Arrive 10-20 minutes before the scheduled time. 2. Be prepared both in preparation and individual equipment. 3. There will be complete focus with no excessive conversation. 4. Follow the guidance by any director, staff or leadership member. 5. Always give 120%, even if you don't feel like it!

Performances A detailed performance calendar for the entire year will be supplied in the fall.

With regards to Marching Band, the band will perform at every home football game. Should the team make the playoffs, we may be required to attend. Contests are scheduled on Saturdays. Please be aware that any Saturday between August 13 and October 29 are eligible contest dates. Please refrain from scheduling anything on these Saturdays as contests usually run from 8am-11pm. The actual performance schedule will be posted by the first week of August.

Along with Marching Band performances, concert band performances and festivals are part of the student’s grade.

Attitude NEVER will you EVER have to ask your directors to have a positive attitude so it’s only fair that the students never have to be asked to do the same! Regardless of ability, if your attitude is not positive, if you’re not giving your all, if you’re not enjoying your experience, you should not be a part of this organization. Be positive! Be optimistic towards rehearsals, performances and the program!

Conduct All band members are expected to follow the instruction of any teacher, staff member or chaperone without question unless said instruction is a violation of civil law or moral standards.

All school rules and policies are in effect at all band functions.

Any band member possessing or using any controlled substance including tobacco, drugs, or alcohol at any band function is subject to immediate removal from the organization, referral to school authorities and, if applicable, the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Students should be respectful of each other’s instruments, uniform and other personal property. There will rarely be an instance where playing on or tampering with another students instrument is acceptable. Uniforms will be labeled accordingly and students shall be concerned with their own uniform parts and not tamper with another students uniform.

Be mature. Be respectful. Don’t act like an idiot! :)

Page 8: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Conduct (continued)

All students will ride to the bus to and from off campus activities. If you wish to ride home from an event with your parents, they must sign you out in person with the director (no other staff member) at the conclusion of the event. Any critical incident involving band members should be reported to the director.

At any band function, students should travel in groups. Leaving the premisses is by permission of the director only.

When we line up to march or move anywhere, there is to be absolutely no talking. One of your goals as students is to be a program that is respected by other programs in our area. This policy is in place to help you achieve that feat. When we move together, we are observed by the public and other bands. You are being watched; you are “performing” whether you are on the field, in the parking lot, getting off of the bus; everywhere! No matter where we are, no matter how you move, do so with Antioch pride. Do not embarrass yourself, your section leader, your fellow band mates, your director, or your school by acting in an immature manner.

Students should make sure they either load their equipment themselves, or see it be put on the equipment trailer any time equipment is being moved

Following any rehearsal or performance, it is each students individual responsibility to ensure that all of your equipment if put away correctly BEFORE you leave.

Public Displays of Affection While in uniform, there will be no public displays of affection shown. There is a certain sense of poise and pride that should accompany a member while wearing the uniform. To uphold that sense of pride and professional reputation, holding hands, cuddling, and other forms of PDA will not be allowed. Members will be allowed to sit by who they choose at band functions, rehearsals and performances, but will lose that opportunity should issues with PDA arise. Bottom line - don’t be gross.

Football Games The boosters will provide water in the stands at football games. No other food or drink will be allowed in the stands. Students will be given a break during the third quarter of each game. Members should eat dinner before each game, as there is not enough time for everyone to be served at concessions and make it back by the fourth quarter.

Students will remain in their own row when in the stadium. It is important to present the image of discipline and pride at all times. The band plays only as a group.

Only band members will be allowed in the band section of the stadium.

Page 9: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Other Tidbits - Members should remain in full uniform unless the entire group is instructed otherwise - Always wear the black band uniform t-shirt under your uniform - Visible pierced jewelry is not permitted during performances - Profanity deteriorates the the credibility of your organization. Keep your language clean - Do not embarrass yourself, your staff, your directors, your program, or your school. - There should never be an action for which an explanation is necessary.

Uniform When you are in uniform, you are a representative of the Antioch High School Band, Antioch High School, and the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education. Represent yourselves and your organization accordingly!

Bus Procedures - For the safety of the group, students will ride the same bus to and from events. - Be respectful and act like young adults. Act your age, not your shoe size. - Section leaders will sweep busses for trash and personal belongings after a trip. - Detailed itineraries will be provided for each event that will include transportation

logistics. - Upon arrival back at school, each member should do their part to unload the truck and

make sure everything is put away. Students will be dismissed at the conclusion of that process.

Contests and Festivals Concerts and Festivals are opportunities for the AHS Band to demonstrate not only our significant musical accomplishments, but out poise and professionalism. Through these activities, we obtain valuable feedback about our progress as individuals and as a program. We will NEVER be defined by any one judge’s opinion of our performance, but it is important that we learn the value of giving maximum effort and standing by the results as our best possible effort that day.

Be respectful during and after another group’s performance. You know the work that goes into preparation and performance, and you would want other groups to be respectful of your performance. Pay careful attention to each performance! You can learn something by watching everyone! Offer your gratitude for a group following their performance in a respectful and appropriate manner.

When scores are announced, we will stand silently with pride and graciously accept the results, regardless of outcome.

Funding the Band Program The Antioch High School Band program is funded solely by the fundraising activities of the students. The bulk of the funds necessary to operate an organization such as this are generated through student fundraising activities. A budget is set by the director and the executive board of the Music Boosters. This budget is then divided by the number of students. This figure then becomes the “fair share” of the budget that each member is

Page 10: Antioch High School Bands - · PDF filepersonally beyond the normal standard of the band program. ... In order to strive for this excellence, ... Jazz Ensemble At the current time

Funding the Band Program (continued) responsible for. Students will contribute to their “fair share” of the band budget through fundraising, sponsorships, or individual financial contributions / payments.

The fair share of each student will be notated in their individual student account. Contributions are outlined in the fair share payment schedule and this form, along with the financial contract, must be signed and returned. Monthly statements of your “fair share” account will be emailed to members and parents / guardians. Errors in statements should be brought to the attention of the Music Booster treasurer within 30 days of the statement. All statements will be deemed correct after that time.

Budget overpayment may be refunded upon request if made prior to April 2nd. (This applies only to payments made out of pocket. IRS regulations prohibit cash refunds of fundraising credits.) If you have an excess amount in your credit balance, you can either request a refund in writing, or donate the credit to the general band fund. Several fundraising opportunities are offered throughout the year to generate funds to offset the “fair share” amount of the entire band, not individual students. Federal law prohibits fundraising for personal benefit.

Personal Instruments Your instruments should be kept in top playing condition. Always check with the director before taking your instrument in for repair.

Instrument Security School owned instruments are documented in departmental inventories. Personal instruments should be registered with your homeowners or renters insurance.

Leadership

Students on the leadership team will be called on to participate in numerous tasks for the development of the band. While most of these responsibilities will occur during regularly scheduled rehearsals, there may be additional time scheduled for leadership opportunities. The leadership’s team role is to assist the band directors and staff with the logistical operations of the band program. All members of the leadership team are expected to lead by word and example. The leadership will strive to keep morale high in their section with positive feedback when appropriate, and will also dispense positive criticism when necessary. The leadership team is the backbone of the AHS Band chain of command. An application process will help identify those individuals. In addition to the “leadership” positions, we have implemented the position of “section leader” as well. In addition to all of the above mentioned responsibilities of the “leadership” team, the section leader is expected to assist the band staff in the teaching of music and drill, tuning, fundamental skills, and section discipline. This includes leading sectionals. The section leader must display strong leadership characteristics but also have obtained strong musical achievement. Each section will have at least one section leader, but larger sections may have more.

HELPFUL HINTS AND GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS FOR HANDLING HEAT STRESS AND EXERCISE

1) Before being allowed to participate in the first practice session of a sport, the following information must be on file in the principal’s office for each participant:

a. Written evidence that the student has permission to participate. This must be signed by the parent or guardian.

b. Written evidence that the student has passed a physical examination as set forth by District and TSSAA policy.

c. Written evidence that the student is covered by a family insurance policy. This statement must list the name of the company and be signed by the parent or guardian. If the student is not covered by a family policy, the student must have the special senior high football policy or the student insurance which covers all middle, ninth and senior high sports except senior high football. Any change in family medical insurance status must be brought to the attention of the appropriate head coach.

d. If an athlete goes to an athletic screening examination and is referred to another physician for further evaluation, the parent must provide the coach with written evidence that the student has passed a physical examination and the physician must address the condition for which the student was referred.

2) Parents must notify coaches, teachers and administrators of an athlete’s medical history and any previous

health problems including heat illness problems, trouble sweating, vascular defects, asthma or diabetes, that put an athlete in danger. If an athlete is on medication, coaches and teaches should be notified.

3) If an athlete is ill (fever, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.), he/she should not practice. If an athlete has been

immunized within the past 48 hours, he/she should not practice.

4) It is clear that top physical performance can only be achieved by an athlete who is in top physical condition.

Athletes who perform their preseason endurance running programs will suffer far less than those who arrive out of shape. It is necessary for an athlete to exercise in the heat if he/she is to become acclimated to it.

5) Athletes must have ample fluid replacement before, during and after practice. Check and be sure your

son/daughter is drinking plenty of water before and after practice sessions. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine or high sugar content.

6) Proper nutrition should be taught and encouraged. Salt tablets are not recommended. Attention must be

directed to replacing water to replenish body fluids and maintaining appropriate dietary habits.

7) Electrolytes and some fluids can be easily replaced with a balanced diet. Fruit, vegetables and salads add water and electrolytes to the body. Large quantities of carbohydrates provide the energy so vital to recovery from fatigue. Protein intake should be normal. Fat intake should be low, as fats use up a lot of the body’s water in order to be digested.

8) Parents must sign that they have received, read and understand the “Helpful Hints and

Guidelines for Parents and Students for Handling Heat Stress and Exercise.” An athlete cannot participate until the parent signs and returns this form to the appropriate coach.
