Antique Flyer Issue /35 OC:f05er /993 ~MA Chapter #/08 We had 22 attendees at the September 15 meeting, three of which are now new members of SAM 27. The new members are Sean Crowley, Robert Stasko, and Tim Molsberry. Sean and Robert will both be participating in our Junior Old Timer Program. Tim started building models at the age of 8. His father (age 88) Ron Keil with his 1/2A Texaco Scale Huntington H-12 occasionally still builds models. Welcome Sean, Robert and Tim. A colleague of Rocco Ferrario, AI Bera, visited SAM 27 for the first time. AI teaches science at Silverado Middle School in Napa. He also promotes a model program similar to Rocco's at Silverado. Old Business A Preview copy of the 1994 EM calendar was circulated and it was agreed SAM 27 would order 15 for resale to members at cost - about $6 each. Rocco Ferrario and Rod Persons reported in detail their proposed Junior Oldtimer program. The proposal was very favorably received and resulted in a number of comments and suggestions. Rocco and Rod are to commended on the thought and effort put into their proposal. It was voted to proceed. The first junior Oldtimers are Sean Crowley and Robert Stasko who were presented with a Zoomer OIT glider kit and special binders to preserve related material. It was agreed that the exact form of the program may differ in some ways from the proposal by the process of Eut Tileston with his WeathersWestemer evolution. This will be a subject for discussion at future meetings, It is hoped that members will think about ways they and the chapter can

Ed Hamler reported thatSAM 27 placed 3rd in the1993 1/2A Texaco ScalePostal meet, only 28 secondsbehind No.2. Jerry Rochawas the only one of all entries(7 chapters) with a doublemax. The sponsor, SAM 82 ofHouston, Texas was thewinner (3rd in a row) andmade a plea for someone elseto win next year so they canavoid the chore of running itagain.

New Business

At the September meetingEd Hamler advised that

through Carl's Hobby shop inNapa he was put in touchwith an elderly gentleman inVallejo who had stored a lotof old hobby shop material.

Ed agreed to coordinate a visitby some SAM 27 members.

On September 18, RonKeil, John Carlson, JerryRocha, Ed Heikell and RayMcGowan went to Vallejo tosee what he had. After

digging through his garage fora couple of hours Ron Keilbought all the spare parts,balsa wood, etc. from theman. Those present then metback in Napa at Jerry Rocha'shouse and sorted through themany boxes of parts and hadfirst dibs on everything thatRon had bought. A few things

were also set aside for Crash

& Bash prizes. Ron seemedvery excited and stated that itwould take him a couple ofweeks to sort through all ofhis purchase. Ron also statedthat he would be selling muchof it at the SAM Champs ..

Show & Tell

Several months ago RonKeil showed the MooneyPeanut plans for theHuntington H-12 1920'shornebuilt he had enlarged to1/2A Texaco size. Ron nowhad the finished product todisplay. It was covered inyellow Micafilm, pilot wasBarney Rubble, beautifulHungerford wheels, and aWilliams plastic cylinder witha Cox head to complete the 2­cylinder Vee engine of theoriginal: Ron had it at theCrash & Bash and commented

that it is a very "dicey flyer."

Pete Samuelson showed-rus-l/2A Texaco Foote- ~

Westerner. The designer (Mr.Foote) was a friend of Pete's.Pete has built several in ClassA & c. This 1/2A wasorigfually built in 1980 andhas had 70 + flights andseveral coverings over theyears including Monocoat, silkand tissue. The presentversion is red Monocoat

fuselage and yellow Japanesetissue wings and stab. Themodel has a pylon mounted 'wing with good looking swepttips, 384 sq. in., 21 oz. and60" ws. Several SAM 27

members saw it nearly OOS atthe Napa RlC field the daybefore the meeting. Plans areavailable from John Pond.

Don Parmenter showed his

Megow Ranger Class A pylonmodel powered with a Hornetrepro which turns 10,000 rpmwith and 8-4 prop. Abeautifully constructed modelwith a clever arrangement foraccess to the vitals. thebottom half of the front third

of the fuselage is removablegiving complete access to thebatteries, Rx, servos, etc.

Earl Hoffman brought abox of scrap material fromHewlett Packard includingbrass blocks, nylon and teftonrods and sheet and otheritems which the group pickedover on Earl's "help yourself'invitation.

Ed Hamler brought thecompleted Red Zepher clubproject. All present gave a biground of applause, havingpreviously seen several stagesof the construction during theyear. Covering is white Silk­Span with red trim per theoriginal. The fin displaysS.M.A.-2 standing forScientific Model Airplane No2 as kitted by Scientific in the30's/40's? The model hasseveral unique featuresincluding a small bead knotretainer to secure the pull-pullleads to the small nylonclevises at the control horns.

combination fuse/armingswitch utilizing a modifiedSerrnos type connector toaccommodate a standard auto

blade fuse. We hope to seetest flights at the Crash &Bash.

Brian Ramsey happened tovisit a candy store inWashington whose proprietorhad previously worked at thePaul Garber/Silver Hill

storage and restorationfacility of the Smithsonian Air& Space Museum. Heexchanged that job foroperating the candy store to"avoid the heat." Brian didn't

explain whether the "heat"was from the hot, humid DCweather or job stress.Anyway the shop had a

number of colored, printedcardboard historical aircraftwhich could be cu out, foldedand assembled. Brian boughta number including a FokkerD-VIII, Taube, Bleriot, SPAD,Spitfire and several others,three of which were donated

as raffle prizes.

When I received the NFFS

letter naming Chet's Classic asone of the models of the yearI thought how pleased andproud Chetwould havebeen. Chetdied in 1989

and his giftto us is the

pleasure wederive from

building and~flying hisdesigns.Chetwas a

modest, softspoken man.The closest Iever heardChet

braggingwas his little saying when hesaw one of his designs beingflown by another modeliRg:"A beautifully engineeredmodel," He'd say, and justbeam. Chet was easy to meetand made everyone fed good.He would offer no advice, butwould tell you everything heknew on a subject if youasked.

Presented here is Chet'sClassic. His 1938 Wakefield,which can best be described

as ''The Forgotten Wakefield."I remember when I first

showed my model to Chet.We were at SAM 39's Annual

Picnic and I handed my brandnew model to him. His eyesfilled as he inspected it and hesaid, "Excuse me, but this wasmy youth."

In August 1987, Chet and Iwere en route to the 50th

Anniversary Wakefield Meetat Warwick, England. It was

to be Chet's first rubber free

flight meet in 16 years. Chetwas recovering from backsurgery and could neitherwind nor chase, but he saidwe had better go because weprobably would not make it tothe 100th Anniversary. Iasked Chet what model heflew after 1937 and that

question led to the Classic,Chet's Forgotten Wakefield.

Prior to 1937 he had been

flying his Duplex, the 1935

design, modified over theyears with polyhedral, 2 bladefolder, subrudder, revisedlanding gear, and new rubber.Chet made the wakefield teamin 1937 with the muchmodified Duplex, and decidedit was time for a new airplane,the Classic. He did not attendthe meet in 1938 since he was

married and trying to raise afamily. In 1938, his goodfriend and flying buddy Dick

the war years came alongand we all forgot about theWakefield. By the time thewar was over and we got backto normal, there were newdesigns and nobody wasinterested in the Classic.

Then in 1988 it wasannounced that an

anniversary Wakefield meetwould be held at Taft in May,

1989, so I persuaded Chet toattend in,·spite of his poorhealth. I still had myoIdpatched Duplex but decidedto build a new model. Iremembered our conversationabout the Classic, and Chetsent me all his photos andplans. the model was not anapproved SAM Design and itwould have to be approved bythe SAM Committee,sometimes a lengthy process.I made copies of all Chet'sstuff and sent them to Jim

Adams, SAM President,hoping this would speed upthe process. I went to workand built one in the hope itwould be approved. Chet washesitant to build one forhimself as it was not approvedand he needed a model to fly,so he built a new Duplex.

Sending the materials toJim Adams was the rightmove. Jim is a rubber flyerhimself and expedited theprocess for quick approval.He was so impressed with thedesign he built one himselfand sent a copy of the plansto Dave Baker in England.When Chet and I arrived in

Taft we were surprised to find3 Classics; Jim's, Dave's andmine. Chet spent half of histime there meeting peopleand posing for pictures withdifferent modelers. Sal Taibi

timed one of Chet's flights for12 minutes overhead whenthe DT failed to operate. Salsaid, "I guess Chet can still do

it, but he's just a little out ofpractice."

A few notes on the modelitself. As with most old time

designs this model is shortcoupled and was designed forT56 brown rubber which

would deliver fairly lowtorque with high winds.Modem rubber is very hightorque and great care must betaken to slowly increase theturns as you adjust thismodel. The wing should beleft where it is shown on the

plans. Do not shift the wingto balance to airplane; if it istail heavy, add ballast. Othermodelers have run into

adjustment problems and

most have been caused byshifting the wing. My modelflies with 26 strands of 1/8"

Pond Commemorative special event rules.

Ohlsson Special Event. Any Ohlsson Sideport ignition engine isallowed. Model must meet all SAM pure antique criteria.

1) Engine run time is 35 seconds.2) Three 7 minute max. flights.3) Four attempts for three officials.Exception: Qualified Ohlsson 23 special event ships may be flownwith either .19 or .23 S.P. or F.R.Y. ignition engines. If an O&R.19 or.23 sideport (only) engine is used, it will be alowed 45 secondsrun time.

OfT Towline R/C Glider. Pre-Nordic, pre-1947 designs only. May bescaled to a maximum of 120" span. Up to 3 official flights toaccumulate a total time of 20 minutes. Each second over 1200 to bededucted from 1200. Any final score within ±3 seconds of target timewill be adjusted to 1200 for flyoff purposes.

1/2A Scale Duration:1) Model must be a replica of a reciprocating engine powered mancarrying aircraft of pre - 1943 design. No powered sailplanes.2) Must be a reasonable "stand off" scale facsimile of the original.Realistic scale colors and markings are encouraged. Contestants maybe asked to judge entries on a "go" or "no gO"-basis for acceptabilityfor flight competition.3) All construction criteria, including engine, wing loading, etc.,is the same as for 1/2A Texaco. Exception: Some minor deviation inrelative empennage areas is allowed to facilitate flight.4) Flight competition criteria is identical to 1/2A Texaco.

Electric Events: Refer to SAM Speaks #108, where these rules werepublished as a proposal. They have since been voted in, and willbe published in the 1994 SAM rule book.

Directions to the Schmidt Ranch: 11948 Franklin Blvd., Elk Grove(916) 684-2265. Elk Grove is just East of Highway I-5, North ofStockton and South of Sacramento. You'll be travelling along a flatrural section of I-5. Take the Twin Cities Drive exit, and go Easta mile or so to Franklin Blvd. (stop Sign). Turn left (North) andproceed a mile or so to the ranch. There's a stop sign at a crossroadjust before you reach the ranch. Camping and RY's OK. No Hookups.
