Being dictated to about the next big thing – the must-have, what’s on

pulse, what’s “right” right now – by the fashion police, all of it doomed to be eyebrow-raisingly passé and hopelessly out-of-touch a season from now, bewilders us… Rubbish! We give the proverbial and very elegant middle finger to those rules – what’s cool today leaves us cold, and if it’s “hot right now” then it’s likely to burn you later.

A visit to one of our events tells this story better than words. Unlike other events that focus on a singular contemporary, innately transient moment, our annual Expos – one in Cape Town at the start of each year, and one in Johannesburg in Spring – are a boutique-style celebration of the vast history of design – past, present and future – and not simply a contemporary moment thereof. This assures the extraordinary variety of exhibits: each unique item on show tells its own story, while at the same time is a piece in the great and glorious puzzle of design through time.

The fifty odd SAADA members, and the additional invited expo exhibitors, are as much hand-picked by SAADA as SAADA is by them: along with the stamp of credibility and automatic accreditation by Brussels-based CINOA (Confédération Internationale des Négociants en Oeuvres d’Art, or International Confederation of Art and Antique Dealers’ Associations) comes immediate access to our events. These include the two aforementioned annual Antiques, Art & Design Expos, and also the occasional mini-expos, pop-up exhibits, and corporate “Fresh Affairs” that we hold throughout the year.

We also organise intermittent “SAADA Circuits” in precincts that contain a concentration of SAADA member outlets. While the recent SAADA Circuits in both Parkhurst, Johannesburg, and in Franschhoek, Western Cape, were popular with various high-end media representatives and bloggers, it is important to note that these fun-filled tours are also open to and can be arranged for the public as well.

Additionally, SAADA accreditation comes with the personal support of our permanent office. Just a phone call or email away, we are not just Customs officers assisting with imports and exports, but are immediately on hand to help with anything from sales recommendations, to details regarding the Second Hand Goods Act, from which our members stand to enjoy very favourable exemptions.

Finally, SAADA membership comes with inclusion in internal and external media publications, including exposure and a chance to advertise on our website, our Facebook and Twitter pages, in our regular newsletters, and of course in the Membership Directory booklet you are holding right now.

Unconstrained by the rules of conventionality – to us being “in fashion” means being dictated to, so we’re deliberately breaking them. Instead, our preoccupation is with quality, integrity, relevance and innovation in design – elements that are timeless. We’re not necessarily “in fashion” and we’re proud of it… but we’re not out of fashion either: we are simply beyond it!

Paul Mrkusic,Chief Executive Officer, South African Antique Art and Design Association

Design PERIOD

There’s nothing else quite like it! Quite simply, that’s what sets SAADA apart. In an increasingly homogenized world where one feels trapped and contained by grey mundane conventionality, it’s the inspiring multi-coloured, out-of-the-box, spark of SAADA that gives us all a breath of fresh air.

Who am I but just a dressed up dresser standing quietly against the wall?

Let me tell you who I am.

I’m inlaid with the exotic stars that the Dutch explorers used to navigate unknown seas in their quest to push boundaries and discover

distant lands. I’m the chest that housed in my heart the charts of those new worlds – new shorelines,

mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, cities, whole continents even – the four corners of the Earth, an unfurling

wind-blown cloak, gradually pulled together to one day connect at a single point of the completed globe.

I’m the observer of conniving court life, of ascending princes and descending dukes, marked by the

spider webs of tricks and treachery by treasonous traitors. I’m the player that outwitted them all,

for I preside here still, crowned king of my court.I’ve been privy to secrets, the keeper of knowledge, and I have time-worn polished gleam to show for it.

What have you done lately?

Mini or Bentley? As a long time Bentley owner in Europe I am prejudiced, but only wish the Bentley had the fuel consumption of the Mini.

Mount Nelson or Zingita? Fifty-five years ago my wedding reception was held in the Mount Nelson Hotel and what a superb job they did to create such glorious memories.

John Le Carre or Bill Bryson? Reading John Le Carre very pleasantly fills up my leisure hours.

Champagne or draft beer? As a wine lover, champagne is the next step up, if your wallet will allow it.

Saturday Night Fever or Out of Africa? Out of Africa has become a classic and it has superb actors, acting, scenery and a darn good story.

Who am I but just a pair of fancy silver wrought candlesticks

placed upon the mantelpiece? Let me tell you who I am.

I’m a dreamed up dream of a dreamer, Patrick Mavros, a sole soul giving life

to a whole continent, the imagined story of the wild of Africa. I’m the illuminator that lights up

a room with smiles and good cheer, my candles at the centre of the table like a bushveld bonfire, sparking conversation of adventure and delight.

I’m a tale teller of that land, of gentle giraffe and trumpeting elephant, I evoke the silver-green

shimmer of leaves, the rough rub of tree bark, and the raw smell of the earthy earth. I’m made from

the metal out of the deeply depths of that ground, sourced by the mettle of the men of Africa, their drum rhythm echoing the heartbeat of the land. I’ve graced

the tables of travellers, lit the hallways of heroes, and have many stories to tell.

Who am I but just a curious coal stained letter followed around by a

pair of World War I medals?Let me tell you who I am.

I’m the letter penned by young William Frederick Boyce in his break shortly after

coaling H.M. Ship “Kent” at Sierra Leone on March 20th 1918. I’m the final keepsake his devastated dad John Henry and mournful mother

Elizabeth Hamilton Boyce had to remember him by, as pneumonia stole his soul not four months after

he joined the Royal Navy, six days shy of sixteen. I’m the close companion of these two mighty medals,

who commemorate the Royal Naval service so eagerly set out upon at the Cape Yard, Simon’s Town for J87743

Boy 2nd Class on 26th January 1918. I’m the last link to the lonely legend “William F”, carved into the Robben

Island Garrison Church memorial to former Island residents whose lives were robbed by WW1.

I’ve been held close to hurt hearts, felt the patter of quiet tears, and I let the legacy of that young

brave boy live forever.

Who am I but a curious “Veldpond” struck in the field at

Pilgrim’s Rest in 1902, and handed down the generations since?

Let me tell you who I am.

I am a personalised Veld Pond, one of the 986 coins struck by the ZAR Field Mint from handmade dies prepared by Mr. P. J. Kloppers, Mint Master in the Field. I am the marvellously malleable metal, the

result of “’n Boer maak ‘n plan”, when he cleverly added sublimate of mercury to me, found in a nearby

ambulance, a Proudly Southern African innovation. I am as pure as can be, this mercurial mercury

evaporating as hotly heat gave life to my early form, while I was born. I am a cookie-cut coin from gold sheets rolled-out by “bitter-einders” Dick Graham and mechanic W. Reid, then uniquely marked with my own individual engraving. I’ve seen the rush of

the gold raiders, sat in the pockets of pioneers, and watched new nations transform around me.

What have you done lately?
