Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce the hiring of new Special Events Coordinator, Ragan Cox.
Ragan comes to The Gardens from Sight Savers America, where she was a KidCheck Plus Program Coordinator, planning nearly one hundred events each year. A graduate of Auburn University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, she also worked as an Auburn Special Events Assistant, planning and facilitating events for the University President, First Lady and Board of Trustees.
Ragan was born and raised in Birmingham and “some of my fondest childhood memories are of visiting The Gardens with my grandmother, a Master Gardener,” she stated.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ragan and have her on board as we continue an exciting year of events celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Gardens,” said Jean Frey, Director of Development.
We encourage you to reach out to Ragan and welcome her to the team. You can reach her at [email protected] or 205.414.3965.
Dear Friends:
Summers in Alabama pose challenges both for gardens and gardeners, with unpredictable rainfall (too-much-too-fast or not-at-all), often relentless attacks by insects and fungi and seemingly endless heat and humidity. Now is when we should be especially grateful for the many large trees that grace our neighborhoods, gardens, parks and woodlands. Importantly, these big trees, nature’s free air conditioners, live for multiple human generations; the ones we enjoy the most today started life before we were born. It reminds me of the Chinese proverb that asks: When is the best time to plant a tree? The answer: Twenty years ago (although for large canopy trees I would say forty or fifty)! So make yourself a note for later this fall or winter to plant a tree to benefit future generations.
In this issue, you’ll meet The Gardens’ 2014 summer interns and the partners that make them possible: Shades Valley Rotary Club, Little Garden Club and Birmingham Southern College. We pride ourselves on partnerships like these and many others. Without them and the volunteers, members and donors that often accompany them, it would be more difficult to meet our science-based mission and to work with the city of Birmingham – our most consistent and important partner for fifty years – to make Birmingham Botanical Gardens the essential community resource it is. We offer our thanks to these and all our partners.
Finally, I know it’s hot outside, but you’re missing a lot if you haven’t seen us in the summer. The Herb Terrace and Bruno Vegetable Garden are positively overflowing. Did you know that we donate an average of 3,000 pounds of fresh produce to Magic City Harvest every year to feed Birmingham’s hungriest? And that our children’s programs include a focus on healthy plant-based foods? Our container plantings and annual displays are also hitting their stride, rife with lush tropical plants that revel in our summers, proudly boasting their bold flowers and foliage. You just can’t see these important elements of The Gardens in any other season – so come on out!
See you in The Gardens,
Fred SpicerExecutive Director & CEO

The Little and Red Mountain Garden Clubs, Birmingham’s local chapters of the Garden Club of America (GCA) and their members have been important sources of funding, volunteers (including numerous board members), advocacy and new plants for our living collections since The Gardens’ beginning. We take great pride in highlighting some recent work on the part of these clubs to honor two of their luminaries.
Last November The Gardens offered special tribute to Louise “Weesie” Smith. So more people could learn about her, a biography was prepared in which she was described as “a tireless champion on behalf of the natural beauty and diversity of... Alabama...[a] community volunteer for over 40 years...a self-taught botanist and consummate gardener; a generous plant sharer; [and] a humble, bighearted teacher and willing mentor.” Read the full biography here: www.bbgardens.org/central-south-honoree.php.
Early this year, honors for Weesie continued, as GCA announced The Weesie Smith Horticulture Award, to be administered by the Red Mountain Garden Club, Weesie’s club and the award’s sponsor. The recipient must be within GCA’s Zone VIII (AL, FL, GA, SC) and will have shown leadership concerning and knowledge of native plants, their protection, propagation
Honoring Weesie and Louiseby Fred Spicer, Executive Director & CEO
and use in the landscape. It is fitting that the award criteria include a willingness to mentor and share knowledge generously. The first such award may be given as early as 2015. Congratulations, Weesie, for this singular honor!
As described elsewhere in this issue, The Gardens has received the gift of a three-year internship from the Little Garden Club of Birmingham. The Louise Agee Wrinkle Native Plant Internship is named for and given in honor
of one of Birmingham’s most accomplished gardeners. Though, as she has said, she came to horticulture later in life than some, I would say that she has pursued it with love, joy, humble tenacity and a studied inquisitiveness that have more than made up for any lost time. This hands-in-the-dirt gift – an immersive internship – is apt tribute. We offer our sincere thanks to the club and congratulations to Louise.

Education and Garden Docents: Gifts to The Gardens
Annual Education and Garden Docent Appreciation Lunch Held on May 20
As The Gardens reflects on its first fifty years, one success story is the education and garden docent programs. The impact these programs have made on countless individuals is priceless, and only made possible through their dedication and passion to educate our visitors. My job as volunteer coordinator is to identify and understand what motivates our docents to stay long term.
One of the biggest motivators for retention of all volunteers is the opportunity to participate in a satisfying experience. Our docents love to interact and educate our patrons through both the Discovery Field Trip Program and our garden tours. Many of our docents claim their motivation comes from a task they are good at, with the notion they feel adequately supported and recognized.
Clearly our docents play an integral part in The Gardens’ education program. They are on the front line in creating an environment for scientific inquiry, as well as fostering an opportunity regarding all aspects of interpretation.
It takes a unique individual to become an education and/
or garden docent. I am humbled by our docents’ devotion and loyalty to The Gardens. As volunteers deliver the education mission of The Gardens by providing tailored educational programming and tours, I more fully appreciate our docents and the contributions they have made over the last 30 years. I know the next 30 will be equally rewarding.
The Gardens education department acknowledges our wonderful and highly dedicated docents with an annual docent appreciation luncheon. This year we were honored to have as our guest speaker, John Manion, curator of the Kaul Wildflower Garden. Members who have been able to spend time with John truly understand his talents, passion and love for native plants. John also has a true gift for sharing his knowledge of native plants with children and adults alike. Thank you John, and thank you docents!
To learn more about how you can become a volunteer at The Gardens, contact Volunteer Coordinator Taylor Steele at [email protected] or 205.414.3962.

I recently received a rare set of four beautifully bound volumes of British Flowering Plants by George Simonds Boulger (1853-1922). They were published in London in 1915. This edition was limited to one thousand copies, of which this is number 175. They were given by Dr. Hughes Kennedy III., who passed away March 15, 2014. Hughes was a big supporter of the library and The Gardens. He loved books and art. He volunteered in The Library and also donated numerous rare books and botanical prints to our Archives and Rare Book Room. Hughes will be truly missed but his memory and his treasures can still be enjoyed by others today.

Summer-blooming shrubs are uncommon in our area. Most gardeners, me included, rely on other ornamental characteristics, like handsome foliage, for woody plant interest at this time of year. However, one shrub really sparkles in late July-early August: Hydrangea paniculata ‘Tardiva,’ a cultivar of panicle hydrangea. Many new cultivars of this species have been introduced recently including ‘Limelight’, ‘Jane’/Little Lime™ and ‘Wim’s Red’/Fire and Ice, to name just three of over a dozen. For us, most of those don’t live up to their marketing promises, as they do in the northeast, mid-west and northern Europe. Plus, they flower in late spring to early summer.
‘Tardiva,’ as its name suggests, flowers markedly later than any other cultivar. It’s an old selection whose introduction is lost to obscurity; still, faced with lots of new competition it has stood the test of time, firmly holding its place as the latest of the (increasingly expanding) bunch. One source indicated that some seedlings of ‘Tardiva’ flowered as late as September: in Georgia.
Valuable for summer flowers, it’s not the most refined shrub in form, being coarse in texture
in all seasons, unevenly rounded and growing to 8x8’+ [above]. Because it flowers on new wood, hard pruning in late winter is recommended for size and shape control to whatever degree is needed; older shrubs should be renewed in this manner to increase vigor and flower bud production. Thinning to minimize branching will cause the typically 8” terminal flower clusters to become 12-15” behemoths, weighing down the stems and turning the plant into a weeping form with a few giant flowers. However grown, is not a plant for up-front, specimen use, but one
best suited for a supporting role.
The conical inflorescences may remind you of oakleaf hydrangea as they are composed of small, fertile flowers inside and larger, sterile flowers outside. ‘Tardiva’ produces relatively few sterile flowers but their large diameter makes a good show [left]. Fall leaf color is usually a medium yellow. They will tolerate most soils that are not permanently wet, and they are reasonably drought tolerant after establishment. The best flower production occurs in full sun, but afternoon or high-filtered shade results in a less tattered plant. Panicle hydrangeas are sometimes incorrectly referred to as “PeeGee” hydrangeas. That tag correctly belongs solely on the cultivar ‘Grandiflora.’

iOn Summer Interns at The Gardens 2014
Sanitra LawrenceRotary Club of Shades Valley Intern
Birmingham Botanical Gardens welcomes Sanitra Lawrence as its 2014 summer intern, funded by the Rotary Club of Shades Valley. A native of Starkville, Mississippi, she is studying Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture at Mississippi State University. Highly recommended by her professors, she has distinguished herself by being on the dean’s list, working in the Mississippi State Trail Gardens, and serving as a student assistant in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. As an Undergraduate Research Scholar, she presented the results of her study on using predatory mites as a biological control of silverleaf whiteflies on poinsettias at the 2014 annual meeting of the Southern Region of the American Society for Horticultural Science in Dallas, Texas.
To pay for her college education, Sanitra has been awarded grants and scholarships and she has worked at her local Lowes, where she has advanced her knowledge of commercial plants. She is interested in a broad range of horticultural subjects, especially tropical and carnivorous plants and plant propagation. Her goal at The Gardens is to make herself a stronger candidate for future employment following graduation in December, 2014.
Mitchell VaughanLouise Agee Wrinkle Native Plant Intern
Thanks to the generosity and foresight of the Little Garden Club of Birmingham, we welcome Mitchell Vaughan. To honor our good friend, Louise Wrinkle, the club raised funds to provide a native plant intern for three summers. Mitchell was the first recipient. Just having completed his junior year at Auburn University, where he is studying horticulture, Mitchell has a keen interest in native plants, including the curatorial aspects of their conservation. Throughout the summer, Mitchell will be engaged in a variety of projects involving native plants, including the continuing development of the Kaul Wildflower Garden and field trips to observe plants in their native habitats. He tells us that he inherited his love of plants from his dad, who grew up on a farm in Bristol, Tennessee. His father in turn inherited that passion from his mother. Having spent his life in the Birmingham area, Mitchell already possesses a solid knowledge of our region’s flora. The native plant internship will allow him to expand that knowledge.
Field Trip to Ebeneezer Swamp in Montevallo, Alabama, May 23, 2014. Pictured L-R are Sanitra Lawrence, Alex Dumont and Mitchell Vaughan.
Alex DumontBirmingham-Southern College Summer Intern
Alex is the second summer intern funded by the Urban Environmental Studies program at Birmingham-Southern College. Born in New York City, he graduated from high school across the Hudson River in Westfield, New Jersey before coming south for college. He was introduced to the concepts of permaculture during his senior year of high school while visiting the Rutgers University Ecocomplex. Subsequently, he was introduced to hydroponics and aquaponics and made the decision to direct his career toward sustainable agriculture. A rising senior, he will graduate with a major in environmental studies and a minor in business. Outside of academics, Alex enjoys rock climbing at Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover and attending Birmingham Barons baseball games. He currently is reading George R. R. Martin’s Storm of Swords from the Song of Ice and Fire series. During his internship, Alex will be exploring the display design and interpretation of greenhouse exhibits on environmental sustainability for possible use at The Gardens.

Red Diamond Lecture Series to present
Royal wedding Floral Designer &
“The Prince of Chintz”Shane Connolly opens the Red Diamond Lecture Series at Antiques at The Gardens on Thursday, October 2 at 1 p.m. Connolly was awarded the Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales in 2006, becoming the official supplier of flowers for royal events shortly after his successful floral design at the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. On April 29, 2011, he would design all floral arrangements for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Shane Connolly and Company achieved international fame servicing these royal events, but their reach extends to private parties, weddings, corporate events and receptions. Connolly has also authored four books: Table Flowers, Wedding Flowers, The Language of Flowers and A Year in Flowers.
Mario Buatta will complement Connolly’s talk with his own on Friday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m. Buatta is a premier American decorating talent that has been working in design for over 50 years. “The Prince of Chintz” comes to The Gardens as he
celebrates the release of his first book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration. After launching his firm in 1963, Buatta filled his client roster with an impressive list of celebrities and moguls; from Henry Ford II to Barbara Walters,
from Nelson Doubleday to Billy Joel. Buatta oversaw the design for the Blair House in Washington, D.C., and he was responsible for the design of pop-star Mariah Carey’s posh New York triplex that was once featured on a one-hour episode of MTV Cribs.
