The Vice-Chancellor Prof.Y.R.Haragopal Reddy presided over the function. The Chief Guest Dr. Sri Hari Rao, Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO, in his live lecture said that digital signal processing is the future of communication technology and its applications cover a wide spectrum of techniques. Further he gave detailed information on various concepts in communication technology in his plenary talk on “Brief case MSS SAT COM”. Prof.M.Y.S.Prasad, Associate Director, SHAR, spoke about the advances in signal processing and communication systems. The principal Dr. P. Siddaiah, was the Convener of the Conference. The Rector Prof.K.V.Rao, the Registrar Prof.M.V.N.Sarma, University College of Engineering & Technology, Principal P.Siddaiah and Vice-Principal E.Sreenivasa Reddy were the Guests of Honor. Eminent personalities like G. Boopathy, Director, DERL; V.S. Mahalingam, Director, CAIR, DRDO, Bangalore; G. Jagannath Das, Project Director, GSN gave plenary addresses. Around 250 delegates from Academic and Research organizations participated in the Conference. Altogether there were nine plenary sessions and 12 parallel paper presenting sessions. Nearly 90 scientists attended the conference from various prestigious organizations like ISRO, DRDO, BEL etc. The valedictory programme was held on 2 nd April 2011 with Prof.K.V.Rao, Rector, ANU as Chief Guest of the programme.

ANU College of Engineering and Technology organized a National Conference on Signal Processing andCommunication Systems (SPCOMS-2011) during April 1st and 2nd, 2011. The Vice-Chancellor Prof.Y.R.HaragopalReddy presided over the function. Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy laid down office as theVice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University, on 19th

May 2011. He succeeded Prof. V. Balamohandas as the14th Vice-Chancellor on June 21, 2008 on a regular basisand completed three years in office. Prof. Reddy’s specialcontribution to the university’s progress is laying foundationfor professional education and also developinginfrastructure on the campus.

Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, the Rector of the University,was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor In-charge of ANUon the completion of the tenure of Prof. Y.R. HaragopalReddy. Prof. Rao assumed office on May 20th. He hadserved the University in several administrative positionspreviously as the Rector (2008), the Registrar (2006), Dean,College Development Council (2003) and Special Officerof Exams (1995-97). Speaking on the occasion, Prof. K.V.Rao thanked the A.P. Government for appointing him asthe In-charge Vice-Chancellor and vowed to further strivefor the progress of the University. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy, the Registrar Prof.M.V.N. Sarma, OSD Prof. N. Samuyelu, the Principals ofthe University Colleges and other officials greeted him onthe occasion.

The University community accorded a warm farewellto the Vice-Chancellor on 18th May 2011. Sri D.M.Varaprasad, Minister for Rural Development and Sri K.S.Lakshmana Rao, MLC, were among several luminarieswho attended the farewell function. They lauded themanifold services successfully rendered by Prof. Reddyto the University. The longfelt need for an EngineeringCollege was realized in 2009 due to the great zeal anduntiring efforts of Prof. Reddy. He also establishedUniversity College of Architecture & Planning andUniversity College of Pharmaceutical Sciencessubsequently. The Vice-Chancellor had also takenseveral initiatives to strengthen research activities on thecampus.

CYBER CAFÉ IN LADIES HOSTEL

To meet the internet needs of the hostel studentsa Cyber Café was inaugurated at Indira Priyadarsini LadiesHostel, Acharya Nagarjuna University, by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy on 28-04-2011.The Rector, Registrar, Principals of ANU Colleges, Officeron Special Duty, the University Engineer, AssistantEngineers, Faculty Members, Chief Warden, Warden,hostel office & Kitchen staff and Students participated inthe function.

Buddha Poornima, the birth anniversary ofGowthama Buddha was celebrated in the Centre forMahayana Buddhist Studies on May 17, 2011. In afunction arranged on the occasion the Vice-Chacellor Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy spoke on thegreatness of Buddha in the field of philosophy. Otherdignitaries like Prof. K. V. Rao, Rector, Prof. M.V.N.Sarma, Registrar, and Principal of Arts college werealso present in the gathering. Professors and studentsfrom different departments attended the function. AsAnnamacharya’s birth anniversary also happened tobe on the same day, both the events were jointlycelebrated. Prof. Vara Prasad Murthy, Co-ordinatorof Annamacharya Centre, and Dr. Ch. SwaroopaRani, Head of the department, Centre for MahayanaBuddhist Studies spoke on the uniqueness of theCentres.

BUDDHA POORNIMA CELEBRATIONS ANDANNAMACHARYA’S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Mahatma Phoole’s185th birth anniversary wascelebrated in the campus onApril 11, 2011. Theuniversity officials, staff andstudents garlanded hisstatue and paid tributes tohim, describing him as agreat social reformer.

The 121st birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkarwas celebrated by Dr. Ambedkar Studies Chair on thecampus on April 14, 2011. The university officialsspoke of the need to emulate his lofty ideals andvalues.

PHOOLE’S 185TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

held in the University Campus on June 26, 2011 withProf. D. Krishna Rao as Co-ordinator.

The 104th birth anniversary of Babu JagjivanRam was celebrated on the campus on April 5, 2011.Several speakers reiterated his efforts for theupliftment of the weaker sections of society.

The Department of Education organised a seminaron Right to Education Act on the 16th June 2011 sponsoredby Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education,Hyderabad as part of Education Week Celebrations. TheSeminar was inaugurated by Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy,Vice-Chancellor, ANU. The Rector Prof. K.V. Rao and theJoint Collector of Guntur Dr. A. Sarath, were the Guestsof Honour. The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. V.Venkata Rao, Vice-Chancellor, National Law School of IndiaUniversity, Bangalore. The seminar was coordinated byDr. M. Vanaja, Assistant Coordinator, Department ofEducation, ANU. Nearly 90 academicians, experts, NGO’sand students participated and presented research papers.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONDEPARTMENT OF LEGAL STUDIES

The Department of Legal Studies organized aNational Seminar on Judicial Activism – Retrospect& Prospect on June 17th and 18th, 2011. Prof. Y.Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor A.P. University ofLaw, Visakhapatnam, inaugurated the seminar anddelivered the inaugural address. Many academicians,judicial officers, and experts participated andpresented research papers.

ENDOWMENT LECTURESThe fifth Prof. D. Dakshina Murthy Endowment

Lecture was delivered by Prof. Tanuku Krishna Rao,Director, Wadhwani Centre for EntrepreneurshipDevelopment, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad on 15th

April, 2011 at ANU Campus. The Endowment Lectureentitled “Evolving Paradigms and Implications on Academia”dealt with increasing participation of the Indian youth inmeeting the future employment needs of the World. Hepointed to the necessary changes to be brought about inthe curriculum to make the students employable.

Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy, Vice-Chancellor,presided over the meeting. Prof. D. Dakshina Murthy,Prof.K.V. Rao, Rector, Prof. G. Prasad, Principal ANU Collegeof Arts, Science & Law and members of faculty and studentsof Commerce and Management attended the Lecture.

The second Prof. D. Vijaya Narayana ReddyMemorial Endowment Lecture was delivered by Prof. R.Venkata Rao, Vice-Chancellor, National School of LawUniversities of India, Bangalore, on 16th June, 2011 on ANUCampus. The Endowment lecture focused on the impactof the Right to Education Act. Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy,Vice-Chancellor presided over the meeting. Prof. K.V. Rao,Rector, Prof. G. Prasad, Principal ANU College of Arts,Science & Law, Prof. M.V.N. Sarma, Registrar, the Facultyand Students of the departments of Education and Lawattended the Lecture. Both the Endowment Lectures wereconducted by Prof. M.V. Ramkumar Ratnam.

The UGC has nominated Prof. K. Rosaiah asCoordinator and Prof. G.V.S.R. Anjaneyulu as DeputyCoordinator for UGC Departmental Research Support-I (DRS-I) under Special Assistance Programme (SAP)for a period of 5 years 2010-2015 in the Departmentof Statistics.

Prof. G.S.R. Anjaneyulu, Department of Statistics,attended an International Conference at NorthCarolina State University, North Carolina, USA duringApril 21-24, 2011.

PROJECT

Dr. A. Krishna Satya, Asst. Professor, Dept ofBiotechnology, has been sanctioned UGC MajorResearch Project worth Rs.8.76 lakhs for a period of3 years. The title of the project is “Structural andBiological Elucidation of Phytochemical Compoundsfrom Selected Medicinal Plants”.

ADIEU

Prof. T. Satyavathi, Dept. of Telugu, retired fromservice on attaining superannuation on May 31, 2011.

The staff and students of the department,felicitated her and reiterated her contribution to thedepartment.

Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy, Dept. of LegalStudies, retired from service on attainingsuperannuation on June 30, 2011.

In the felicitation function organized in thedepartment, staff and students praised him for hisservices to the university in different capacities,including that of Vice-Chancellor.

The university places on record the valuableservices rendered by them and wishes them a happyretired life.

NATIONAL BIOINFORMATICS CENTRE

The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. ofIndia, has sanctioned National Bioinformatics Centreto Acharya Nagarjuna University and released anamount of Rs.20 lakhs for establishment ofBioinformatics infrastructure facility for Biologyteaching through Bioinformatics (BIF-BTBI) under theBTIS net. Dr.A.Krishna Satya, Asst. Professor, Dept.of Biotechnology, has been appointed as Coordinatorof this Centre and Dr.D.Srinivasa Rao the Asst.Coordinator for the same.

TRAINING PROGRAMME IN POT PAINTING TOTHE SCHOOL DROPOUTS

The Department of LifelongLearning inaugurated 15Days Training Programme inPOT PAINTING to the schooldropouts in Kummaripeta ofSalapadu village of Gunturdistrict on 13th April 2011.

Salapadu villageconsists of more than 300potters families and majority

of the young girls are school dropouts. Social stigmas andeconomic conditions are the major cause for their dropout.Hence, the Department of Lifelong Learning explored thepossibilities of giving them training in Pot Painting.

Mrs. B. Syamala, resident of the village, was theresource person for the Training Programme. More than 57school dropouts enrolled in the training. Their family membershelped the training programme by preparing Pots of differentsizes and shapes. Different concepts were painted on thepots. The Valedictary Programme of the Training Programmein Pot Painting was conducted in Salapadu village of Gunturdistrict, on May 8th 2011. MLA and Chairman of SangamDairy, Sri Dhulipalla Narendra was the chief guest for theprogramme. Other invited guests were Prof. P. NarasimhaRao and Prof. N. Samuyelu from ANU, while Mr. M.V.Ramana presided over the programme.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON POLLUTION OFPLASTIC ON ENVIRONMENT

The Department of Lifelong Learning organized anAwareness Programme on Pollution of Plastic onEnvironment in the College of Pharmacetical Sciences, ANU,on 15th April 2011.

Programme. The programme was coordinated by Prof. P.Syama Thrimurthy and presided over by Dr. Prameela Rani.

Dr. Swamy through PPT slides explained the pollutioncaused by plastic used in houses, Computers, medical fieldetc. Pictures of various pollutants both dissolvable and nondissolvable were displayed. He explained to the studentsthe various toxic plastics that are used to store medicines,the negligent way of disposing them, the damage that occursboth to human and animal life etc. He even presenteddifferent ideas for reusing the plastic and minimizing plasticpollution to certain extent. More than 70 Pharmacy studentsand staff got benefited by this programme.

DEPARTMENT OF LIFELONG LEARNING

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON LEGALASPECTS IN NURSING

programme in the presence of the college principal, staffmembers and trainees. The programme was coordinatedby Prof. P. Syama Thrimurthy, HOD, Dept. of LifelongLearning with the support of her staff. Mrs. Dhanalakshmi,Principal of the college presided over the programme andMrs. K. Suganthi was the resource person for theprogramme. Over 130 students of the Nursing colleges werethe beneficiaries of the programme.

Mrs. K. Suganthi explained why trainees have to beeducated about the legal aspects while nursing. She saidpeople with different mind sets, economic and healthconditions come to the hospital. Handling them is a difficultand challenging job. Only when trainees are aware of thelegal aspects can they perform their duties better. Shenarrated the legal situations that arise in treating patients,using drugs, handling the Mentally retarded people,personnel problems within the hospital etc.

As per the directions of A. P. State Council ofHigher Education, Hyderabad, Acharya NagarjunaUniversity conducted the PECET-2011 for about 10,000candidates. These tests were conducted from 15th May2011 to 10th June 2011 at Acharya Nagarjuna University

campus. Physical Fitness tests were conducted forabout 500 candidates every day on the play grounds.The tests were conducted successfully and the resultswere announced on 29.06.2011 by Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor I/c, & Chairman, PECET-2011 committee.
