Lot many lessons, I suppose. It had the real focus, on the education system, and whether educators, parents andstudents alike need a fundamental rethink of their perspective on what educationand learning are about. We can re-look at a lot of things and make an impact at anindividual level. In the 'knowledge age' what is needed is a system that ensures plenty of self-motivated hard work driven through a system where learning is meaningful, relevant and based on developing skills for the rest of a person's life. The youngsterswith the drive, passion and fearlessness for the battle of life to win as raw material, will find many takers who would rightly teach what they needed them to know.Mahesh Gupta, graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, gotgroomed to be a missionary who has this essential inner wealth, is a creator ofKent RO System and with his unfailing positive attitude and burning desire hasdone something infinitely greater than making a water purifier and has proved thatone really can Think and Grow Rich by expanding the infinite mental capacities, ifone has the will power.Activity is the insignia of life. Rising from the realms of unactivity and notsuccumbing to inactivity, KiranBedi, the first woman IPS officer in India and aformer IITian (Ph.D. from IIT Delhi) always kept herself moving and in action.Devoured in honesty, truthfulness and sincerity, Sushant Saxena, yet another IITianin khaki, is a man of values and principles who struggled to pave his own way thatleads to selfless service to mankind. The inner power and competency is very important in achieving the desired returns ofthe expectations inculcated within. Amplifying on one's dreams is not just enough but a holistic approach is necessary torealize the dreams of cracking IIT-JEE and other Engineering competitive examinations, which intends to remind the aspirantabout his/her dreams and stir passion within at every conceivable touch point. This year's IIT-JEE will be conducted on April 11, 2010. Your stay at Resonance was not a mere study of cluttered books but wasan experience, the intention of which was to primarily trace out important and pertinent points and concept clearance, necessary for cracking IIT-JEE and other Engineering competitive examinations. Continual practice and revision; relyingcompletely on Class Notes, Daily Practice Problems (DPPs) and Sheets will be instrumental in making you more confident intaking IIT-JEE. The guidance and direction of your experienced faculty members, who acted more as your mentors willcertainly help in augmenting your potential and your morale.Synthesized efforts of students and faculty members of Resonance will surely open the gates of knowledge of Indian Institutesof Technology (IITs) for which I wish luck to my students.I also welcome my new learners who have believed in Resonance to accomplish their dreams. I take privilege in making themclear that studying at Resonance is not mere by-hearting the books but it's an experience that makes a learner adept and clear inconcepts and fundamentals which is not only important for cracking IIT-JEE and also for studies at Indian Institutes ofTechnology (IITs).5276 selections (3345 from Classroom and 1931 from Distance Learning Programmes), in the span of 9 years, Resonance hasdeveloped and has taken a leap forward in making education more precise and accurate and also by obtaining rank in top 10and producing highest score in mathematics in IIT-JEE 2009 ( by Anvit Singh Tawar-AIR 9).The Department of Research and Development at Resonance continuously strives and keeps the study pattern at par with thepatterns of IIT-JEE and accordingly restructures the curriculum planning. By maintaining equanimity in teachingmethodology, to make the education more easily available, Resonance other than its 8 study centres and 4 information centreshas come up with 3 new study centres at Udaipur, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. We have never compromised for qualityteaching at our origin Kota even after having centres across the country. The quality teaching is ensured by rigorous facultytraining and developmental programs for fresh and existing teachers apart from recruiting faculty directly at the senior level. At the end, I wish my outgoing students All the Best and encourage my incoming students to get ready with vigor to excel intheir endeavors.R K VermaB.Tech., IIT-Madras, 1994ANUNAAD, April - June 2010 5A message of hope~i (-i(|. -. ~i:~i:-|-(i (ss)lans'kiin| iniln| -ii - (i :s l(nilii | i (rn (| r+ -(i i |in l ln inni (-ln ii(i ii i i r| i(ni r+ i:i:-| - i ii l (rn i ii i -in l-l- i ni r+ l(nii| i i--l((i i i- (ii r| :lsn i -n - (( l i( r+: (i i:i:-| | n (i |ii zoo i -nil(n r+ i - r-ii (( l lni(i i ni (i r| r| (l~ liii (ii ((i liii -i- l(nii| l i| i( n-(i i -i(i i rni r l -i- - i--l((iinn ri+ i ii i ii i( - ri r l i i- ||| i i|- -i- i n -il - |l(nilii ii nirni i ll-n i ( (i lln ri i+ inii l(nilii | --ii i ( i|i( - l r i r-ii l(nilii -ir (i l n- r r+ l(ii l(ii i i i i| | i-nii lnii i (i n r+ri - i| l(nilii ri irni l ln ni i -( n ii r| (ii i ni r i | -i- i l ni ii iin| iniln| -ii i ii n r+- i| (inn l(nilii i -(inn ni r lri iln l i - l((i - li+ l(nii| i - (ii ni-- ni - (l- ii i:i:-| | l- i- i i| r - - ii (ini ril i:i:-| - |ni lln n+l(nn s (ii - i ni : ii r l- rz/c (ssr ll-n ii i- i ss (-n liii i- )i:i:-| |ii - r r+ i si l(n lr n( ii i|i o - s(| (|ni ( nlin - (ili in i ~i|li r|+i l (-- l(iin ii i:i:-| |ii - - ((i( i i-i-n| - (ilsn l(n ln -- (li in| (i i l in r+ liii n|i i in ilii | in| r l l(nilii - i: ln l (i rinii liii ii(i ( +(i i| ini l(nilii i i:i:-| (i |ii | ni| i -ii l- : l i ln -i| r+ : (i i| liii l(ii liii (i i r+(i (i i| l(nii| i i--l((i ii ln n ri l- l ni r+ i:i:-|:: zoo | |ii -l--ln ri (i i| l(nilii i -| iii-i ( ii|(i(+ANUNAAD, April - June 2010 6IITIIT SNIPPETSIT's official now. Last year, forinstance, of the 9 students whoWillow Garage, a Silicon Valley researchgroup celebrated the success of their PR2mobile robot recently. PR2 (Personal Robot 2)has wheels and can cover a distance of a mileand a quarter per hour. It navigated thecompany's cramped office, opened doors, entered rooms and plugged its power cordinto ten electrical sockets - using its agile armand hand. Scientists here wanted to see howthey could push the limits of hardware, software and systems for robots and whethera robot could perform a certain set of tasksreliably.Sachin Chitta, one of the people whodeveloped PR2, and an alumnus of IITBombay, says about the robot, "A bunch ofpeople were pretty nervous, including me,The Future is Hereabout what would happen, what the robotwould do. People were trying to mess withthe robot as it was doing its task byjumping in front of it, blocking its path, butit's a persistent robot, it didn't fail, it keepstrying." Along with being persistent, it'sclever as well. If it finds a door locked, itsimply moves on to the next one instead ofcontinually trying to open it.Though on the surface, it seems like a smallstep, it is a giant leap for scientists workingin robotics. Since PR2 is designed as aplatform to conduct research and buildapplications in mobile manipulation in realhuman environments, it will help manyscientists to spin off ever faster into thefuture. The fact that the latestphosphate binder is a resinapart from being indigenousmakes manufacturing simplerand hence cost effective. Afterhaving devised an indigenousmethod of developing thedrug, the scientists applied fora patent. Nephrologists saythe drug is efficient, delaysdialysis when given early tokidney failure patients andincreases quality of life inpatients who are on dialysis.Engineers hit top spot in CAT again this yearachieved a 100 percentile, a majoritywere from the IITs, and one each fromIIIT Hyderabad and NIT, Trichy.Manoj Sharma,Additional Director (A & M)Courtesy - Times of IndiaANUNAAD, April - June 2010 7Water, Drop Of Life.Pour In Your Glass Clean Water !Discover the efforts of an IITianto keep a healthy body...ater is life. It is vitalf o r o u r b o d y functions. Five andhalf cups of water perWday is required forthe normal metabolism of the body. Herethe stress is on pure water. Mr. MaheshGupta, creator of Kent RO systemrealized this fact in 1999, when both ofhis children were caught up by jaundice,a water-borne disease. At that time itstruck to him that application of a waterpurifier might have saved his childrenfrom the disease. This incident made himsearch for the water purifiers in themarket but soon it came to hiscomprehension that none of the purifiersavailable, met the standards he waslooking for. And so he decided to makeone of his own purifier by importingcomponents from abroad. The properfunctioning of the purifier, meeting hisneeds and specifications of thepurification of water made him think tolaunch the same water purifier for theentire nation. Today, Kent RO Systemhas a much bigger turnover of Rs. 25crore as compared to Rs 5 crore of S.S.Engineering, his first venture and morepeople know him as the founder of KentRO Systems than his first company. He started off, working in the garage ofhis house. He took care of everything, including being the peon, typist etc all byhimself. He dissolved his ego at thattime. He did not want to approach any ofhis contacts because he didn't wantanyone to feel like they were doing himfavors. He knew that if his product wastruly valuable he will be able to convincepeople he didn't know to buy hisproduct. It was only after the first yearthat Mahesh Gupta bought a place to putup his factory.Mahesh Gupta graduated in mechanicalengineering from Indian Institute ofTechnology (IIT) Kanpur and then didhis masters in petroleum from theIndian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun. He then joined Indian Oiland worked as a manager in technicalservices department for about 10years.The latent burning desire reinforceditself on him and made him getthrough all the perspiration necessaryto overcome the inevitable obstaclesalong the way to reach the desiredgoal. In 1988, he realized that his innerurge was to do much more than just aroutine job. He possessed somebrilliant ideas for petroleum productsand to accomplish those ideas, hedecided to quit Indian Oil and thatmarked the beginning of his firstventure, S.S. Engineering Industries, which commenced with a meagerinvestment of Rs. 20, 000. Thiscompany is in the business ofmanufacturing innovative oil flowmeters and oil testing kits and till date, this company is a profitable businesswith an annual turnover of Rs 5 crore. What makes Kent RO different fromother water purifiers is, first, itstechnology. It uses a reverse osmosisprocess, followed by an ultravioletprocess, which is followed by a system toretain essential natural minerals in thewater. This product is patented.Technologically, it offers a greatadvantage as it removes dissolvedimpurities like salts and heavy metals, while retaining essential minerals. Also, the UV process in Kent RO kills thebact eri a t hat pass t hrough t hemembrane. 'Of course, other thantechnology we also differentiate ourproducts in terms of performance, servicing, branding etc.'Over the past few years, a number ofcompetitors have come into the ROs e gme nt . Ma he s h Gupt a ha dcompetition from Eureka Forbes,Whirlpool, Phillips etc, but his productstill performs the best. It has an X-factorthat is difficult to quantify to the public. The components are same as that of othermanufacturers, but it is that slightmodifications in the way RO use thesecomponents that give RO an edge overthe others.'Today, a major chunk of our businesscomes from household consumers. Thedemand comes more from homes thanoffices.' Mahesh Gupta has created acompetent marketi ng team thatapproaches institutions, interested inordering the product.Kent RO Systems, which has Bollywoodactor Hemamalini andher daughter Esha andAahna as its brandambas s ador s , has earmarked Rs 15 croretowards marketing andadvertisements.Rs 1, 000 -crore Indian- Mahesh Gupta Cover Story -R K SharmaSW & PR- Mahesh Gupta Cover Story -water purifying industry is growing at20 per cent annually and according toGupta, Kent intends to capture a 25 percent share of this industry by end of 2010.To further strengthen its marketing ties, the company has done strategicmarketing tie up with Indian Oil and BigBazaar to make the product rangeavailable to the consumers. We are also stepping up our presence inall the new formats stores across thecountry. The distribution channels arealso being scaled up. The tie-up with IOCwill help to market the purifiers at selectoutlets, he added in one of hisinterviews. The challenges are many but in thosechallenges lay several opportunities anda good entrepreneur captures thelucrative opportunities to build thebrand and raise consumer awarenesslike Mahesh Gupta did for clean watertechnology.Mahesh Gupta is looking forward toincrease international focus butcurrently his main markets for exportsare Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya and SriLanka.Being extremely passionate for work,Mahesh Gupta moved ahead facing thechallenges and looking problems asopportunities. He grew an attitude which helped him reach his full potentialin every activity he took up.Success is failure turned inside outThe silver tint of the clouds of doubtAnd you never can tell how close you areIt may be near, when it seems afar;So stick to the fight, when you're hardesthit,It's when things seem worst that youmustn't quit!-ri nni n| (i r l i- ( i| | ni | rln (ilri(ir i|( i i| r| i|+ i ( (i -i ( (rn| i (|- /ro i:l| (|n- -i i in r+i ri r l -i - iiii l(i - ri+ r- i (r i (i ii: i il- -- (n| l(i i :l |( i|| (l- r- : (l(i i|+ :r| (l(ii ii |( - (i ( | (i-i iiii innr:+ -(iiil( - s rni ii.-| :si si (ir i|( | i| i - iniii l - (rn s i :s r i r (i - -i ri i+ni+ lni i| (i - i+ -ri i ( i r| i(| i i (i( - ii -i -(|ni ri ( ri r| n rn i+ (r - -r-ii i- in i+ -| i: | (i(ri i:i:-| (i |ii (| i s-l-i-i | (r i i-i n+ lni il( i (rn llnn i l -rii i iii ii l r i:i:-| - (i l-ini+ r i i| i r|+ ri i:i:-|i - (i li+riil - (- sii - iil- ii l i| -n -i(nil ((i( ii il -| -il- (rn+| r| i|+ | -ilni (( - i ni+ (i( ( r ri n+ i- (i -ni (r o - ( c./ r| i i + nn|(i - rn rn ri iii i--l((il i li i o - o in l(ii+(r n( (nin r l i:i:-| - nn| (i |i: ( l- -i| in| r+-l :|l|n | i: | (i(nni s/s - :l i iii(i:i|) n i | -rn | ((in(ri r ~(|~(| (iln l-| l-| - (r n| in (+ (ri i- (rnsi ii l i| nni sss - i:i| |i| si (|+ ri ri l :-i(i| rni (i ii i+ ni r l - i il(~| sii r| irni ii+ -| | |ln rs i - n(i(i | i| i -i(-ii --(: - ii+ - ini ii l - l(~| - il--n i l l| r| r(ii+ ili - ln| (i i ni ii`(i ii r ii l - -i(ni | i ii: i- (ii -r ni ii+ i:i| -ni (r -| | i lri( r| i n i+ (r ini i r liii irn i ln (:i) (ii i ni r+i:i| | | i| si ri -| ir| i- i li+ s -r| ni lni ii r|r l (i( - (- | l| n- ln--i i ri -r li+ nni i: (i( ri -n rin (i i l(i+i /s i | - ri (i(( ( -n irin ( r r+(i sss - -ri nni (ii (i i (lin i|| ii |li ri ni+ : (i( ri i|| i i (i (i| ii| | nii |+ nnii -r ri l (ii - r| -i - | i:ii| r| r i | i| i rillrn -i(i | nr i| n + :| (i(ri i n - r| i i ii| ni|+ :| (i( l(-in - r (in i| i: l( - l r ii| ni ni r ni(i l i r|` :| i - iil-n-( - ii+:| (ii nni iil-- (l- : l(ni n+ ( | | i (i- i ll(n) iniiil-- n l(i - - i i |liiii i i--in i i l(i+ nni rnr l (r ln r li |( ( i(i ri r+ ri -| i i |nr (( l(i nni r -lr r/ l( n i- in r+ --- -i (i - s (r rn r - (rn (i r i -ini r ll| i i| | ili i-ni r| in(i ilr + i (i - r ii r-ii iii r| i ilr+ o i - - ii l(i (n(n ri ini | in -|-( ni r+ i | -| n ( zooi | ri n: r+ (r - ii l(i l(-i i n r` r s ri(nii l r- i: lii: (i n n r l((r -| r ni r- liii ( i (in r+ nni ( i- i ll(n r ir ii -( rini r+ (r iiiri| r i lnl(i i n r+ l(i - -| i(i (-| i (-i r+ (-i (i ii(i - ni r i (-| li i| --ii -i - l(iinni ln | r+i (ii l i i (i r` r s nni ri l i (i - i-- l((i |-| r+ r nni r l iiln i l(ii -i i--l((i ini r l i r| r+i--l((i ni| ini r ( r ii(i i l - ri- ni r+ r r -r | n rl ni ni| l-n| ( (r | (ini i-n ii - | ((i(| r| rin|+lQyrk rHkh feysxh tc iwjh {kerk ls dke djsaxsANUNAAD, April - June 2010 10The incredibleIITianempoweringexportersat Tirupur- Sanjay Gupta - Sanjay Gupta - Sanjay Guptaan is the roof and crownof creation. Gradationamong t he humanbeings is created byMdi f f er ences i n t he'quality and texture' of their emotionsand intellectual convictions. SanjayGupta, one of IIT Delhi's brighteststudents, did create that difference. Agraduate in 1983, Sanjay Gupta left theabode of opulence which was brought inby several job offers, many of them frommultinationals and rather decided tofollow his heart over his head. Ignoringthe offers, he shifted his bag and baggageto Tirupur, a small town in Tamil Nadunear the Nilgiris.Gupta's move seemed a disaster as inthose days not many outside the stateknew of Tirupur's existence. (Its rise tofame as a textile export hub happenedlater). But he was unfazed. It was alwayshis ambition to do something on his own.Besides, being the only son, he felt he hadto help his father in the family business. In 1982, his father had bagged a Rs 32-lakh contract from Europe and shifted toTirupur. We always knew that Sanjay would beon his own and not join a company, says Sanjay Sangal, who studied at IITwith Gupta and is now running his ownsoftware consulting firm Microware inDelhi. While the first few years wereprimarily spent on understanding thebusiness of textiles, Gupta graduallylearnt that Tirupur exporters, including his own family business, were unable to compete with globalrivals because of inefficient processesand lack of automation. One couldn'thave asked for a better internship asthe fi rst 10 years hel ped meunderstand the business, realize theinefficiencies and also gain trust oflocal exporters, recalls Gupta.Gupta brought several exporters inTirupur together to form their own ITCompany cal l ed G- Tech I nf oSolutions. The company was formedafter Gupta. Many others realized thatthey needed their own firm to overseeprocurement and deployment of newIT solutions. The real benefit oftechnology lies in its application, andnot in the hype, says Guptasuccinctly. We now plan to have a centralizedERP that can be delivered to exportersfor monthly fee of Rs. 3-4, 000 withouthaving to invest upfront, he says. Theseexporters are hoping that this proposedenterprise resource planning softwarewi l l he l p t he m t r a c k e x po r t consignments in real-time, throughcomputers and even mobile phones, helping them erase almost Rs 800 crore inlosses each year because of delayedshipments, apart from saving anotherRs 200-300 crore from supply chainefficiencies.Today, he has no regrets about what he isdoing. It's a tricky issue and we havehad discussions around this recently, butwe must give back what Tirupur hasgiven to us, says Amita Gupta, his wifewho manages the family business andhelps him find enough time to fulfill hismission.Vidhu GaurSW&PRANUNAAD, April - June 2010 11Kiran Bedi"Be a Master at what you are doing - cultivate excellence, balance the head and the heart.
