is the most stringent performance testing

conducted on any carpet - including real-world

“torture tests”. Most carpets are subjected to one

cycle of testing in the Hexapod Drum, a machine used

to determine how well they will stand up to extended

wear. Anything Goes! styles are run through two

cycles of the Hexapod Drum, rather than the single

cycle used for other carpets. This represents twice

the punishment endured by other styles tested for

appearance retention. Moreover, the appearance

retention results for Anything Goes! styles must

also be much higher than typical of most carpets

being evaluated, certifying the carpet is suitable

for high-traffic areas and entitled to carry the

Anything Goes! No Mat/No Crush warranty.

Warranties: Texture retention vs. No Mat/No Crush

Many people, including some retailers, confuse texture retention warranties with the Anything Goes! No Mat/No Crush warranty, but the two types of performance warranties have little in common.

Under most texture retention warranties, change of appearance is considered normal and is not covered. This is a subjective judgment that is often not in the best interest of consumers. Another significant difference in the warranties can be found in the fine print – the exclusions. Most manufacturers protect themselves with subjective terminology to avoid problems with claims.

These exclusions are found in texture retention warranties from leading manufacturers and represent the typical wording used to soften the performance promise. Who determines what is “significant”, “abnormal”, or “excessive”? The manufacturer.

With most texture retention warranties, the carpet’s fiber brand is a more important factor than performance in determining the warranty. Very few texture retention warranties are transferable, and the coverage does not include stairs and hallways. Lastly, matting and crushing – which results in appearance change – are specifically excluded, something that should be a concern to consumers under the impression that texture retention means resistance to matting and crushing.
