Technical Update

Canberra 20th July Wellington 27th July Adelaide 29th July Perth 31st July

The world is moving so fast these days

that the man who says it can't be done

is generally interrupted by someone doing it.

Mobile Workload Pricing for z/OS

Benefits

Improves the cost of growth for mobile transactions processed in environments like CICS, IMS, DB2, and WAS

Mobile Workload Pricing (MWP) enhances Sub-Capacity pricing

Mitigates the impact of Mobile on MLC charges where higher transaction volumes cause a spike in machine utilization

Normalizes the rate of transaction growth

No infrastructure changes required, no separate LPARs needed

It is an enhanced way of reporting sub-capacity MSUs

System runs as it always has, workload execution is not altered

MWP Announcement Letters – 2014-05-06

MLC and Mobile; Reduce MLC Cost

MWRT removes 60% of the Mobile workload, interval-by-interval

Non-mobile workload is unchanged

New Peak R4HA Value = 1231 MSUs MWRT savings = 173 MSUs

Provides benefit when Mobile workloads contribute to monthly peak MSUs; Off-peak MSU adjustments will not affect MSUs used for billing.

Original Peak R4HA value = 1404 MSUs

REST Services (CICS TG, z/OS Connect, VUE’s, IIB, Feature packs)

IBM API Management for z

IBM MobileFirst Protect for z, Guardium, etc.

IBM ODM, IDAA, SPSS

Why APIs? Why do they matter?

“The Building Blocks for Apps” - The “API economy” has changed how developers think about building apps, and how organisations deploy software in the cloud - Many of the core business functions reside in z based services (CICS, IMS, WAS, TPF) Eg Quote interest rate ad loan application Checking room availability and reservation Citizen information for customs check

zServices API

Discovery of z Services for API Development 1. Get a list of deployed services (Service Identification) - Filter based on technical and business service attributes

2. Get schema for a specific service (API Definition) 3. Get additional deployment details for a service (API

Assembly) - e.g., security protocol support, invocation uri

Service Development Tool and Enablement Runtimes

Web Services CICS and IMS provides separate tools and

runtimes; TPF provides runtime libraries

REST/JSON CICS and IMS use common z/OS Connect runtime
