The Anza Society is anorganization of individualsinterested in the life andtimes of Lt. Col. JuanBautista de Anza. Since 1996,they have held “AnnualWorld Conferences”bringing together peoplewith knowledge to shareabout Anza. The 14thconference was held March13-15 in Tucson, Arizona.

Presenters offered a varietyof subjects connected toAnza. Ron Quinn from Calif.State Polytechnic University created a mentalpicture of Father Pedro Font’s role on the 1775-76Anza Expedition and his relation with Anza. Theaward winning photographer, Nina Egert, PhD,showed her contemporary photos of the AnzaTrail landscape in relation to the historicaljourney. Gerry Hamor talked as the 8th generationdescendent of Lt. Moraga. Society President JoeMyers, PhD, used computer maps to illustrateAnza’s early campaign against the Apache Indiansin 1766. The Chief of Interpretation at TumacácoriNHP, Don Garate, talked about the Pima uprisingof 1751.

The panel discussion was attendees talking abouttheir ancestral link to members of the Anza familyor to the expedition members. Joe Camarillo (incharge of food services at the hotel) is partApache and described modern day Indians inArizona. The first day ended with a participants

wearing period clothing from the Tucson Presidioand performing a play written by Larry Marshallabout the 1775-76 Anza Expedition. That evening,the banquet featured keynote speaker JackLasseter, telling a story about the ChiricahuaApache and their famous chief, Cochise.

On Saturday, the field trip included the TucsonPresidio and San Xavier del Bac Mission. Theevent ended Sunday, after a three-hour tour oftwo 1775 Anza Expedition campsites north ofdowntown Tucson.

Meeting Partners

Since my arrival to the Anza Trail in mid-February,I have had the opportunity to connect with manyof the trail partners and supporters. I found all ofthe encounters to be inspiring. In mid-March, Ivisited Tucson and attended the 14th AnnualInternational Conference of the Anza Society.Participants expressed a great deal of passion forthe Anza story, the people, and it’s legacy.

The trip was capped with a quick Sunday morningtour of several campsites, led by Joe Meyers.Visiting the sites brought greater meaning to thestory and the people I had been learning about theprevious days. Going to the sites, I experiencedthe power of place and the importance of standingnear the sites where the expedition passed. Boththe story and the place are important to buildingthe trail and engaging many more supporters. This edition of Noticias will again present themany projects and programs that continue tobring the power of the trail alive.

As inspired as I am about the future of the AnzaTrail, I am saddened by Margaret’s departure. Sheis a talented interpreter, and the trail was fortunateto benefit from her skills for three outstandingyears. I believe I speak for many of the trailsupporters that we will miss her very much. Herfuture is filled with many wonderful experiences.Let us wish her success and joy in Yosemite andbeyond. �

National Park Service Documentary

Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan are making a film aboutthe NPS. The film reveals compelling stories of the parks,the Service, and the individuals who shaped them. This isa meaningful time to raise awareness of the NPS inpreparation for the centennial in 2016.

“While making this series, we discovered more thanstories of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. Wediscovered stories of remarkable people from everyconceivable background. What they had in common wasa passion to save some precious portion of the land theyloved so that those of us who followed might have thesame chance to fall in love with that place. Without them,parks would not exist” Burns said.

This fall, public television will air the six-part, twelve-hourseries The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. �

Heading to Yosemite

This is my farewell message to the AnzaTrail community. This summer, I will beworking at Yosemite National Park as thefirst Interpretation Coach for park partnerpublic programs. I am returning to awilderness site, which is where my NPSwork experience started in Yellowstoneand Death Valley. In the fall, I will take anextended leave from the NPS to pursue mydream of coaching and training.

Working for the Anza Trail has truly been aunique experience for me. The variety of trail projects and partners hasshown me the array of possibilities in getting the work done. The AnzaTrail community is passionate about this resource; the stories it tells andthe recreation it provides.

I appreciate the wonderful individuals and partners I have worked withsuch as re-enactors, event coordinators, park rangers, descendants,teachers, planners, designers, and the volunteers. You make the trail areality and keep the story alive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge,skills, and experience with me on this journey. �

National Trails SystemAnnual Report for FiscalYear 2008 Available

Statistics from trail relatedactivities in FY 2008 have beenrolled up with data from ForestService, BLM, and other agenciesinto an annual report structuredaround the 6-agency NationalTrails System MOU signed in 2006.The report includes statistics suchas changes in mileage andprotection, high potential sites andsegments, changes indevelopment and certification,data management, mapping, andunmet needs. Google Earth Campfire Program: Borrego Springs, CAJanuary 1 & 10Dick Overturf used a computer and Wi-Fi at Anza-Borrego State Park during his campfire programs toillustrate the Anza Expedition campsites. It workedgreat. He flew the audience right up CoyoteCanyon to Salvador Linares’s birthplace, clicked onthe diary entry for that day, and then flew on toSan Francisco. Very creative!

Volunteer Award to Mary Dahl: Tubac, AZJanuary 30The Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona and the NPSawarded Mary Dahl in recognition of heroutstanding volunteer service to the Anza Trail.Richard Williams expressed the organizationsthanks for all the work and expertise Mary hasbrought to the table. Anza Riders in Rodeo Parade: Tucson, AZFebruary 26The Anza Expedition Riders entered the annual “LaFiesta de los Vaqueros” Tucson Rodeo Parade. It isclaimed to be the world’s longest non-motorizedparade since 1925. The Anza Riders representedthe soldados and families of the historic expeditionand were organized by Louie and Terry.

New Trailhead Ramada: Tucson, AZMarch

Pima County has finished construction on theTuquison Trailhead for this recreational section ofthe Anza Trail. It is located in Columbus Park. Thefunding came from county bonds.Mary Dahl and Richard Williams

ATCA at the Marana Founder’s Day: Marana, AZMarch 21

The Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona (ATCA)volunteers participated in the event with a boothto promote the Anza Trail in the community. Inaddition to providing participants withinformation about their organization and the trail,their theme was “Eating Our Way on the AnzaExpedition.” Don Kucera, Joe Myers, Susan Smith,and others gathered this information for the event,displaying tangible foods and a binder of resourceinformation. The foods included corn, chilies,watermelon, squash, piloncillo, chocolate, canela,mesquite pods, and flour.

Santa Cruz River Researcher’s Day: Tucson, AZMarch 27Researchers and interested individuals met for amorning to share their knowledge on the health ofthe Santa Cruz River. Presentation topics includedinventories, monitoring, health, plants,dendrochronology, groundwater interaction,riverwatch, clogging, and water quality.

Temporary Halt on Arizona State Park ClosuresThe Arizona House of Representatives gavepreliminary approval to keep threatened state parks

open by diverting money from a voter-mandatedprogram for land conservation for open space. Themeasure aims to reverse recent state budget cutsthat have put numerous state parks at risk ofclosure including Tubac Presidio and YumaQuartermaster Depot.

San Antonio Mission Day: Colon, CAApril 4Volunteer soldados were marched around the SanAntonio Mission during their second annualMission Day event on Saturday, April 4, 2009.Activities included a re-enactment camp,blacksmithing, presentations, entertainment, andvisiting the beautiful chapel. �

Volunteer Projects: Before and After

Clean Up the River

Volunteers from Anza Trail Coalition of Arizonaand the Rio Rico Interact Club tackled a bottledam along the Santa Cruz River in Arizona.Bottle dams are created when garbage in theriver gets caught on an object (like a fallen treetrunk) and starts backing up to create a dam.

The volunteers need to remove the garbage (inthis case mostly bottles flowing north fromMexico) in order to break the dam and allowthe water to flow freely.

These photos show the difference their workmakes and it is remarkable.

Clearing Away the Weeds

Across the river from Griffith Park in LosAngeles, there is a red and white Anza Trailmural. It was painted by youth many yearsago through the North East Treesorganization. In early April, one man noticedthat weeds and bushes were obscuring themural.

He took matters into his own hands. Withthe permission of the MetroLink Train toaccess the site (tracks run along the top ofthe mural site), Dennis Sundman cut theweeds and picked up the trash. Lastsummer, he was one of our first seasonalTeacher-Ranger-Teacher staff working atSanta Monica Mountains NRA.

Students perform “Crossing the River” at the annual Yuma Crossing Days on February 14 at Yuma QuartermasterDeport State Park. Youth of the M4 J001 Club of Yuma (home school honor club) researched the historic 1775 AnzaExpedition river crossing and wrote the play portraying the three days spent in the area. The event was organizedby the Arizona State Parks in partnership with Yuma Crossing National Heritatge Area and the National Park Service.
