From the Principal’s Desk

Welcome back to Term 2! NAPLAN The National Literacy and Numeracy testing has occurred for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 this week. Students in these year levels in schools across Australia have undertaken the same tests on these days. Students have their skills assessed in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), and Numeracy. Test results provide additional information on how students are progressing in these areas. Moonta Area School is committed to improving the literacy and numeracy levels of our students through quality and evidenced based teaching and learning processes and we are looking forward to receiving the results which we predict will show significant growth from the levels achieved when students were tested two years ago.

2017 Public Education Awards I am proud of all staff at Moonta Area School who go above and beyond each and every day. This year there are five new award categories to acknowledge the impact of individuals and teams who demonstrate strong leadership, community engagement, innovation, as well as outstanding outcomes in non-teaching roles. There are also more opportunities than ever before to recognise excellence, with each category having two runners up who will receive $2,000, along with a winner’s prize of $10,000. All awards are to go towards professional learning activities.

If you would like to nominate someone who works at the school or a team of people who work here please go to www.decd.sa.gov/awards. Nominees will receive a certificate and an invitation to apply for an overall award, which could result in funds for the person or the school to use for professional learning.

Early Closure As you know we will be closing the school on Tuesday the 16th of May (next week) to enable teachers across eleven sites in the Northern Yorke Peninsula participate in Professional Learning together. The purpose of this time is for educators from across the partnership to come together in small, like groups to look at common areas of interest and professional need. We thank parents and carers for the opportunity to participate in this partnership professional learning exercise and look forward to implementing our learning over the year.

Quote of the week “Throw kindness around like confetti”

I wish all staff and students a productive and exciting Term 2!

Kernewek Lowender 2017

Our school will be participating in the Kernewek Lowender Festival on

For your child to participate in activities in the street prior to the procession, in the procession or as spectators, parents/guardians need to sign the consent form and return it to school no later than Wednesday, May 17th. If you wish for them to leave the group, to be with you, once the activities have finished, then you must see their teacher and sign them out.

1 ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Student Voice Executive Training Day

Student Voice Executive members along with Mrs Jane McCauley attended the Moonta RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service on 25th April 2017 at the Moonta War Memorial on Blanche Terrace. School Captains Tahlia Congdon and Josh Moss and Junior Captains Sheridan Scott and Marcus Moore placed a wreath at the memorial on behalf of Moonta Area School to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Veterans.

On Friday 5th May the Student Voice Executive representatives met during Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 to look at what Student Voice achieved in Term 1 and to brainstorm goals and ideas they would like to see happen throughout Term 2, Term 3 and Term 4. Students participated in group tasks which focused on team work, good communication skills, positive leadership skills and the importance of positive role modelling. Students completed group activities which looked at What does being a Student Voice Representative mean to you, qualities each student brings to Student Voice and how if we put all these positive qualities together, how strong Student Voice could be.

Students discussed what it means to be a good leader and listed some leaders that they admire and look up to. We then looked at what we need to do at school to show, and role model, positive leadership.

MAS Cross Country

A big first term of sporting events at Moonta Area School has been concluded by the cross-country. One of the hardest sporting events on the SAPSASA calendar; it requires fitness and mental toughness to push oneself to the point of fatigue but not give up until the race is run. We were all extremely impressed with the effort and sportsmanship shown by the students on the day to make what was a great event for all involved. Congratulations to the following students who achieved a top four finish in their age group:

An extra big thanks to the families that gave up their day to help out all of our kids at Cross

Country. Chris Lawrence

Narelle Rowntree Trisha Jones

Craig Amundsen Donna Amundsen

Kara Madden Tamara Lodge

Mel Dunlop David Stewart Kaye Johnson

NYP SAPSASA Cross Country

On Thursday 4th May, 2017 selected students travelled to Kadina Memorial School to compete in the NYP Cross Country competition. The students earned selection by finishing in the top three of their race at the Moonta Area School Cross Country held during Term 1. The Cross Country is a particularly difficult race as you require speed and stamina whilst dealing with the weather, terrain and pain of the gruelling run. However, all Moonta Area School students battled wilfully and gave their all to achieve their personal bests. The top six from each race at the NYP Cross Country are then selected to race at the Oakbank state meet. The results from the NYP Cross Country are as follows:

10 Year Old Boys 1st – Fraser Elsworthy; 3rd – Mason Dunlop; 13th – Rielly Jurgens 10 Year Old Girls 2nd – Scarlett Hatcher; 6th – Olivia Jones; 13th – Lilah McKenzie 11 Year Old Boys 9th – Sam Fry; 14th Bailey Shearer; DNF – Ashton Wardle 11 Year Old Girls 9th – Eve Robbins; 10th – Asha Johns 12 Year Old Boys 2nd – Jett Smith; Tied for 7th – Daman Kirley and Ashton Gregory-Halls

12 Year Old Girls 12th – Chloe Oxpring; 13th – Kennie Dunlop; 14th – Ella Van Duin 13 Year Old Girls 1st – Emma Prout

Interschool Sports Day

Hosting in 2017, Moonta was keen to achieve some great results as we were up against the other high school from the peninsula – Yorketown, Ardrossan, Central Yorke, Kadina, Maitland and Pt Broughton. The team was selected based on results from our sports day across all athletics events in under 14s, 15s and open as well as two wheel and ball teams in under 14/15 and open.

With a maximum of seven competitors in each age group in each event, the day is fast paced commencing at 10am and presentations finished by 2pm.

A mixed bag of results occurred with the under 15’s and team games the strengths within our squad on the day. The sportsmanship and comradery amongst all competitors was highlighted as a great positive of the day.

Extra congratulations to Tyler Moore who broke two under 15 records on the day. He jumped 11.92m in the triple jump, eclipsing the previous record by a massive 1.06m and also jumped an extra 0.48m in the long to set the new record at 5.50m.

A big thanks to the students who helped set up and pack up during the day, Little Athletics for the timing gates, LJ Hooker for the marquee and all staff from across the peninsula for making an enjoyable day run smoothly.

Team Games Pennant: Moonta 2nd (52 points) won by Yorketown (56pts) U14 Pennant: Moonta 6th (127 pts) won by Ardrossan (192.3 pts) U15 Pennant: Moonta 1st (199.8 pts) with Central Yorke 2nd (195.2 pts) Open Pennant: Moonta 7th (117.8 pts) won by Port Broughton (215.8 pts) The YPCT Shield: Moonta 7th (444.6 pts) won by Ardrossan (549.9 pts)

Mile End Athletics An early start greeted us as 35 students and three staff travelled to Athletics SA Stadium in Mile End, Adelaide for part three of athletics carnivals in Term 1. The team was chosen based on results from a combination of Sports Day and Interschool.

We had once again moved up a division for the second year in a row to now be in C2 competing against Naracoorte, YP Zone, Grant, Lower North, Murray Bridge and St. Michaels with each student being able to compete in a maximum of six events.

Students overall found the competition to be tough as the standard was very high, but the majority of students battled well to fight for the best result in their event.

Some great results came with our students winning their events:

Claudia Hatcher – Open girls 100m, 200m and 400m Tyler Moore – Open boys triple jump and long jump, U16 boys triple jump and long jump Jordan Turner – Open boys high jump Kurt Daddow – U16 boys shot put Kadra Raunic – U15 girls 90m hurdles Will Drogemuller – U14 boys triple jump

Also well done to Zarli Willshire, Will Drogemuller, Kadra Raunic, Oliver Mullins, Henry Hopkins, Patrick Fry and Kylie Cini who finished second in an event, some by as little as 0.02.

An extra mention must go to Libby Adams who very early in the day came off second best in a battle with a hurdle, but rebounded from being in pain crashing out to being ready for her next event in no time. Also to Ruby Markham for competing in the 1000m steeplechase (long distance hurdle event where there is water at one of the jumps) and getting completely saturated but doing the whole thing with a smile on her face.

Overall as a school Moonta came seventh out of eight in the boys, seventh out of seven in the girls resulting in finishing seventh overall. This means that in 2018 we will move down a division.

Premier’s Be Active Challenge 2017 Welcome to the Premier’s Be Active Challenge for 2017. There have been some big updates to the Challenge this year. Unfortunately the challenge has moved away from the website of previous years to a school based administration system. This means that we can no longer save paper and have students complete the challenge online. This year all students will be required to fill out the booklets and return them to school upon completion for me to upload to the system.

The Be Active Challenge is completely optional and up to your child’s discretion. The Be Active Challenge is an initiative set-up by the government to encourage students to achieve 60 minutes of physical activity per day: Be it walking the dog, riding a bike, playing with friends at recess or lunch or any method of activity is acceptable. The positive effects of keeping active are vast and include better concentration levels, higher self-confidence, better personal health and even improved performance at school. The challenge requires students to log 10 weeks’ worth of activity to show they are achieving 60 minutes per day, which is required by the end of Term 3, after which your child will be awarded with a medallion. The school also goes into the running to win $1000 for our PE program if we have enough children completing the challenge. I highly encourage your child to participate in this year’s challenge, it is worth the effort.

Bryce Ingham (HPE Teacher)
