ALPHA OMICRON CHAPTER OF ALPHA DELTA PI AT OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2015 The STATE DAY CELEBRATES PARTNERSHIP WITH RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES AO Members Awarded for Dedication to Chapter S tate Day was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, March 7, where we spotlighted the 35-year relationship between Alpha Delta Pi and the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). In addition to the two annual House Corporation Board meetings, State Association Business Meeting, various ceremonies, and award presentations, we filled 75 Easter baskets for the residents of the Tulsa and Oklahoma City Ronald McDonald houses. The Tulsa Alumnae Association began the Easter basket tradition more than 25 years ago. The Association provides the baskets, grass, stuffed animals, and wrappings, while members provide goodies and manpower for filling the baskets. As residents check in for a stay, the baskets are left in the rooms as a surprise greeting. Some years ago we added Christmas stockings to the fun. We wanted to involve all the participants attending State Day and include the Oklahoma City Ronald McDonald house in this fun tradition. Our guest speaker was Jean Ann Hankins, Tulsa RMHC Executive Director. She shared a video featuring local ADPi volunteers and a family experience. We treasure our partnership with RMHC and plan to work with them for many more years. In addition to the baskets and stockings, the Association also volunteered at the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House fundraiser called McDazzle where they helped with auctions and registration, and last year adopted a room at the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House. We cleaned it top to bottom and then redecorated it with new bed linens, lamps, and bathroom décor. The Delta Members also contributed to RMHC this year with the annual Heart of a Lion 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run and the inaugural Pop Tab ‘N’ Drop It Dance- Off between fraternity teams. There are also many members who visit the Ronald McDonald House monthly to serve those staying at their home away from home. In February, some Delta members made dinner at the Ronald McDonald House for families staying there and it was a deliciously good time. Congratulations to the alumnae and Delta Members who were awarded at State Day this year. We appreciate the commitment that all of our members give every year and enjoy celebrating reaching our goals and acknowledging our leaders every year. Living by the CreedWhy Linda Welch Ablard ’72 Encourages Alumnae Involvement

L inda Welch Ablard ’72 has spent her

life encouraging women to do something they love and to dream big. She credits her membership in Alpha Delta Pi with helping her to achieve her dreams and lead a values-based lifestyle. When she came to OSU, Linda wasn’t sure if she wanted to follow the footsteps of her older sister, Shirley Welch Hastings ’69, and be known as “Shirley’s little sister,” but once she met the women of Alpha Omicron she knew it was meant to be her home. Her two younger sisters, Brenda Welch Yazel ’75 and Peggy Welch Fenderson ’77, also joined, and all four Welch sisters treasure the bond that they share.

Linda had a wonderful undergraduate experience. She remembers getting her diamond sister, Dixie Shaw Thomas ’70,

who was a wonderful mentor. When Linda was initiated, her sister Shirley surprised her at the ceremony. While she served as Chapter President, Linda was able to conduct Brenda’s initiation, and a couple of years later she was able to attend Peggy’s Bid Day.

After graduating, Linda became a Leadership Consultant for ADPi. “Becoming close with my fellow LCs and meeting

sisters from all over the country and Canada was very rewarding and educational. I attended convention that first year as an LC. I’ve never missed one since because I’ve always served in some international capacity. I have a million memories from conventions.”

Some of the most gratifying moments of her membership came from when Linda did research and writing for both Sisters and

More Sisters, the 150th and 160th anniversary history books. “That was more work than I ever dreamed, but one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It was fascinating to learn how ADPi was founded, built, and protected by so many strong women.”

Today, Linda is thrilled to serve as Executive Director for Alpha Delta Pi Executive Office. “After being a volunteer for more than 25 years, it was an honor to become executive director. Working closely with Grand Council, International Officers, and our amazing staff is inspiring.”

“One aspect that is not in my job description but I love is mentoring our summer interns, Leadership Consultants, and other younger members. Chapters can always benefit from alumnae support. But it is very rewarding for the alumnae, too. As our creed promises, their lives will be enriched.”

Service HoursAO came in first place in community service with more than 1,917 hours recorded. We are so proud of our sisters for showing their true heart for people and giving back to the community.

Starring in Varsity RevueWe are extremely proud of our cast members and the directors who devoted countless hours to make sure we did an amazing job. We were paired with the women of Tri Delta, which gave us an advantage in preparing for the show. We are so proud of our performance that won “Most Entertaining.” The show ran February 25-28, and our ladies sang and danced beautifully—such talent in our Chapter!

Fall Formal Recruitment • August 4-10, 2015

Alpha Omicron depends on recommendations from our alumnae to recruit new members to join our Sorority. If you know of a potential new member, please send her name and information to Recruitment Information Chairman Emily Stuart ’13 at [email protected]. We would also love alumnae volunteers, so please let us know if you can help us during this crucial time

for AO.

It has been a great year so far for us. We can’t wait to see what the rest of this semester has in store! Please visit the Chapter house anytime. We would love to see you!
