Volume 25, #8 A Monthly Newsletter Published by the RoadRunner Prospector’s Club October 2011 PRESIDENTS CORNER Its’ October and I have been getting out to the claims. We have a fine outing scheduled for this month and I expect to be present to see what I can find. However, I have to report some news, some is good and some is not. Whenever I ask someone whether they would like the good news first or the bad news, they usually reply they prefer to hear the bad news first. The bad news is we have run into a difficulty with the December Steak Fry. The problem is that we cannot have it in its prior form as a steak fry, but now must have it catered. Maricopa County has rules that govern outdoor cooking, whether it is by a company, charity or a not for profit 501C3 like us. They are now enforc- ing those rules. The rules mandate that anyone handling, cooking or in anyway involved with food preparation have a “food handlers license”. This pretty much rules out cooking in the manner we did previously. It gets worse; we have to have hot water present, we don’t. We need to have refrig- eration; we don’t; ice chests won’t suffice. We need a person to serve as director and an additional fee must be paid to the county before we can cook anything. We must have a three-sided tent or something blocking the wind so that the food isn’t contaminated by some kind of air pollution from being cooked outside. I am serious, these regulations are ridiculous and they go on and on, but that is the law and a violation would result in a $5000 fine and the steak fry shut down. The Board upon learning this has decided to do a catered BBQ instead. This is because all food will be cooked off site and brought in by truck in the same fashion as the Spring Picnic. The employees will all be li- censed. Unfortunately, we will have to pay more for everything and therefore the ticket price must increase. This year the tickets will be $15.00 per person and we will still lose money. We are stuck with using the Saguaro Ranch facility this year; we had to lock in the reservation and pay one year in advance. The costs have gone up from prior years and we will be looking for a different facility next year. Some of the members have made suggestions in this regard. Please let the Board know if you have any additional suggestions. After reviewing all of them the Board will make a decision. As you know we have been having raffles at the monthly meetings. We have another problem. Due to the increase in the price of gold from about $600 to $1800 per oz. we cannot give away as much gold as we did previously. In other words, we cannot raffle $1000 of gold when we only take in $600 in ticket sales. Therefore, the Board has decided that we will only raffle as much gold as is covered by the amount received from the ticket sales in any given meeting. We really cannot do it any other way. That is about enough bad news for this month. Those things that we cannot change, we must adapt to and accept. The good news is that we have a very good coin shoot scheduled for November being orga- nized and run by our secretary, Carol Nickel with the able assistance of her husband and Board member, Bill Nickel. I think Carol is doing most of the work. I suggest you go to the coin shoot and I wish you good luck. Continued on Page 3

PRESIDENTS CORNER

Its’ October and I have been getting out to the claims. We have a fine outing scheduled for this

month and I expect to be present to see what I can find. However, I have to report some news, some

is good and some is not. Whenever I ask someone whether they would like the good news first or

the bad news, they usually reply they prefer to hear the bad news first. The bad news is we have run

into a difficulty with the December Steak Fry. The problem is that we cannot have it in its prior

form as a steak fry, but now must have it catered. Maricopa County has rules that govern outdoor

cooking, whether it is by a company, charity or a not for profit 501C3 like us. They are now enforc-

ing those rules. The rules mandate that anyone handling, cooking or in anyway involved with food

preparation have a “food handlers license”. This pretty much rules out cooking in the manner we

did previously. It gets worse; we have to have hot water present, we don’t. We need to have refrig-

eration; we don’t; ice chests won’t suffice. We need a person to serve as director and an additional

fee must be paid to the county before we can cook anything. We must have a three-sided tent or

something blocking the wind so that the food isn’t contaminated by some kind of air pollution from

being cooked outside. I am serious, these regulations are ridiculous and they go on and on, but that

is the law and a violation would result in a $5000 fine and the steak fry shut down. The Board upon

learning this has decided to do a catered BBQ instead. This is because all food will be cooked off

site and brought in by truck in the same fashion as the Spring Picnic. The employees will all be li-

censed. Unfortunately, we will have to pay more for everything and therefore the ticket price must

increase. This year the tickets will be $15.00 per person and we will still lose money. We are stuck

with using the Saguaro Ranch facility this year; we had to lock in the reservation and pay one year

in advance. The costs have gone up from prior years and we will be looking for a different facility

next year. Some of the members have made suggestions in this regard. Please let the Board know if

you have any additional suggestions. After reviewing all of them the Board will make a decision.

As you know we have been having raffles at the monthly meetings. We have another problem. Due

to the increase in the price of gold from about $600 to $1800 per oz. we cannot give away as much

gold as we did previously. In other words, we cannot raffle $1000 of gold when we only take in

$600 in ticket sales. Therefore, the Board has decided that we will only raffle as much gold as is

covered by the amount received from the ticket sales in any given meeting. We really cannot do it

any other way. That is about enough bad news for this month. Those things that we cannot change,

we must adapt to and accept.

The good news is that we have a very good coin shoot scheduled for November being orga-

nized and run by our secretary, Carol Nickel with the able assistance of her husband and Board

member, Bill Nickel. I think Carol is doing most of the work. I suggest you go to the coin shoot and

I wish you good luck.
