Future newslettersDue to the large expense it is to the club every year we are planning to scale back the size of the winter newsletter next year. In 2016 it cost the club over $11,000.00 to have the mailers and tickets printed and processed. Most of the committee re-ports will be posted on line shortly after events conclude. A good example is junior archery. They conclude very early in the year and the members are not able to see the committee report until the following year.

New Range Safety RulesIn 2016 additional range safety rules were requested by the membership. Please read the range rules before you use the ranges. Starting now, the club Range Safety Officers will be reporting repeat offenders that are not following the club’s range safety rules. The safety infraction will be noted on our membership data-base. If the Range Officer reports a member for a safety infraction and it happens second time the member breaking the rules will be suspended until the Board Of Directors decides what action to take. It is your responsibility to read and abide by the club range safety rules.

Final notice to renew your membership

Renewals are due no later than March 31st 2017.

Renewal form is on the back page of this newsletter and on the website Anyone who lets their membership lapse past the renewal date will need to rejoin as a new member, pay the initiation fee and take the club orientation. Adult yearly dues are now $30.00 per year. Annual membership cards do expire on Dec 31st each year. March 31st is the grace period to pay your dues. If your card has ex-pired you are not allowed to use the facilities until you renew your dues.

FINANCIAL – Ray DeFrain (Treasurer)The Club’s financial position continued to be very good during 2016. Major proj-ects completed were: two new trap houses with updated electrical hookups, the installation of concrete 100 yd prone shooting positions, stone for the competition pistol ranges, two new precision Air Rifles for Jr. Rifle, and 2 new club shotguns. Please note that I also included costs for insurance, taxes, postage, and printing to give you and idea of the additional cost burdens we have beyond project costs. For the most part, in addition to membership dues, significant funds are provided by the Spring and Fall Raffles and the 52 Weeker profits. It is because of the ex-cellent financial support we received from the membership who attend and support these events that the Club was able to pay for major improvements without loaning any additional monies. The Club also maintains a land fund for the purchase of any properties the would be beneficial for Club ownership. The club wishes to thank all that support these efforts for without them we could not make the neces-sary capital improvements nor meet the required expenditures. Thanks again for all your support and I hope to see you at the club.

Fishing CommitteeLast year’s fishing contest was a complete success with the addition of the new aer-ation system. The trout were very co-operative for the children and the adult contest. The dates for the 2017 contest are April 22nd for the children and the 23rd and 24th for the adults. I would like to thank all the helpers and club members who support the contest and also to Cabela’s and members who donate to hold this event. Thank you,Terry and Fish Committee

Pistol Report - Tom OlewineThis past year was the most successful year the pistol events ever had. With the addition of the new competition ranges we were able to have 6 different types of shoots. All these shoots were well attended with USPSA the most, Blue Mountain Falling Steel, Steel league ICORE, IDPA and the new one 3 Gun. Next year we will be adding Steel Challenge to the list of other shoots. USPSA will be having a 3 day sectional match along with the AREA 8 match plus there monthly matches. The BLUE MOUNTAIN Falling Steel match will again be in early October. There will be 2 STEEL league matches this year along with 2 ICORE matches. IDPA will having there monthly matches as well. The 3 GUN NATION have planed 5 match-es this year. And as for the new STEEL CHALLENGE matches they will be month-ly Saturday matches with the Championship match is September. We also plan to run one or two Run and Gun night suppressor matches and 1 or 2 Pin matches. Make sure you are on the Ontelaunee email list to receive match dates for these events. Look for all these dates and times on our web page -ontelaunee.org. I want to thank all the people who help set-up, tear down and run these matches. Hope to see all of you again in 2017.

Int’l Trap2016 was another good year at the Int’l Trap range. Participation continues to be strong, and like the past couple years we have seen more new folks give the sport a try. We’re looking forward to adding another 2-day match in 2017, due to an over-whelming number of requests from our regular shooters and those who enjoy trav-eling to Ontelaunee from afar. Ontelaunee was well represented at competitions this year. Several competitors from our club traveled to Montreal and Binghamton to compete in weekend matches. Andy Katzenmoyer, one of our regulars, won the match in Montreal after besting a past Canadian Olympian in a miss and out shoot-off. Rocco Bara won the competition in Binghamton. We would like to thank all those who’ve provided food, cooked and/or helped out with range maintenance. We have become known as a place where you might not shoot too well, but you’ll always eat well. Once again I’d like to thank Andy Kat-zenmoyer, Tom LeMasters, Dave Friedberg, Giuseppe Pedulla, and Brett Neave. Brett built and donated a new score board this summer. Thanks Brett! We’re looking forward to a busy and exciting 2017.

NOTICEPlease order your 52 weeker 2018 tickets now

We sold out of 2015 and 2016 tickets and have had a lot of disappointed members. Last year we received over 300 payments for 2017 tickets that we had to either return their money or give them a 2018 ticket. So we are starting the 2018 tickets with over 300 already sold before this letter goes out. We hope to sell them this spring so we do not show it in the fall newsletter and disappoint people in the fall.

Jr Rifle Team The Ontelaunee Jr Rifle Team is shaping up to be a team to beat. This has been our 5th consecutive year winning the Lehigh Valley Prone League. In fact, the top 6 shooters were all from Ontelaunee. Sarah Frantz is the overall winner, Calista Smoyer 2nd, Kaitlyn Frantz 3rd, Jenn Plocinik 4th, Emma Rhode 5th, & Megan Waidelich 6th. Our highest team aggregate score for the season was a 499 out of 500.We hosted a CMP 3-Position Air Rifle Postal Match, & our top shooters Calista, Sarah, Kaitlyn, Jenn, & Megan, earned an invitation to compete as a team in the Regional Match at Camp Perry, Ohio. They had a great performance & finished 3rd. This further qualified them to the National Match, where Madilyn Riegel & Emma substituted for Kaitlyn & Me-gan. Their highest result came on day 2 when they placed 13th in the Nation out of 40 teams. Also during this match, Calista earned the remaining points she needed & received her CMP Distinguished Marksmanship Badge.Calista, Kaitlyn, Emma, & Jenn were our top shooters for the American Legion 3-Position Air Rifle Postal Match. They shot well enough to make it into the 2nd round where they finished 7th in the Nation. Each received a distinct sew on patch from the American Legion.During the USA Jr Olympic State Championship, Calista finished 2nd Intermediate Junior in both air rifle & 3-Position smallbore. In the Sub-Junior category, Sarah took top honors in both air rifle & 3-P smallbore. Calista, Sarah, & Jenn each received invitations to, and competed in, the National Jr Olympics in Colorado.Other accomplishments by our juniors: 2nd Team in the American Legion 3-P Air Rifle State Championship, 2nd Team in the CMP Jr Olympic State 3-P Air Rifle Championship, 3rd Team at the CMP Regional Championship, won National Awards & State Awards.Calista earned the title “Jr State Champion” for outdoor Conventional Prone.Quintin Lawley Jr had a great match at the NRA 4-Position Jr Sectional we hosted. He was our top shooter and won the silver medal.William Hower show cased his prone abilities during our hosted Regional Prone Match. He received a medal for winning his class, & also a discount waiver for the NRA Prone Championship in Bristol, IN.Thanks to the Friends of the NRA, a generous grant was received which paid for a brand new air rifle & various other equipment. This is greatly appreciated.A grant from the Midway Foundation helped to fund the addition of a new high pressure air compressor system. This is working very well with our air rifle program. For more information, you may go to the Ontelaunee web site & click on the Jr Rifle month-ly reports. Also check us out on Facebook. In short, we have a very dedicated group of juniors who have been learning to advance & excel in the sport of rifle. Part of their learning is goal setting, commitment, confidence, & interaction with teammates. Junior Archery In 2016 we had a great year, we had 64 kids sign up. They learned the safety and fundamentals of shooting a bow. I would like to thank all the instructors for their help, also the parents for all their support. We will have our sign up for 2017 Jan. 7, 9 to 12 at the club house, space is limited. Thank you Jerry Barlet Chairman

Junior archery is selling a Special Collectors License Plate to raise funds for equipment needed for this youth program and to promote awareness of the 250th year anniversary of Coal and Anthracite region in Pennsylvania.

The greater Anthracite cultural region is far more extensive than just the area where there’s a coal mine in your backyard. Anthracite cultural, historical, family employment, and technological inter-linkages comprise everything from the Le-high Valley north to Binghamton, NY; and from the western New Jersey Mineral & Zinc Belt across to Harrisburg and Williamsport.

The 250th Anniversary of Anthracite includes the entire cultural family throughout this greater area surrounding Northeastern Pennsylvania. These commemorative license plates show the organizations which connect our people to this greater region as a whole. By displaying these plates, each organization is saying how they are a proud part of the fabric of our unique American regional family. The plates are limited to the first 200 people who buy one. The plates are $24.00. The proceeds will help fund the Junior Archery program. If you want to buy one tear out this page, fill out the form on the back of this page and mail it to the ad-dress listed on the order form. SKEETThree years of operation now, where does the time go? Thanks to the hard work of Scott Reinhard, who worked in the rain planting trees, giving shooters some shade in the future. We also installed the ability to shoot skeet solo with a voice activated wireless controller. This coming year we intend to install a gazebo and patio furniture when taking a break from shooting. Thursday late afternoon and early evenings has seen more shooters participating. Skeet is opened Thursday 3 PM until sunset from the beginning of April until the end of October. We’ll consider opening earlier on Thursday if interested, so give me a call to let me know. It is also possible to shoot Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM upon request. Cost is still $4.00 a round if you bring your own shells, typically # 8 or 9 shot low brass target loads. Shots are typically only 20 yards, so you can use any shotgun you own or you can use mine. If you are not familiar with skeet, we’re happy to show you how. (Carl is an excellent instructor.) I’m still learning myself, that’s what makes it fun. I plan on shooting a lot more skeet this coming year, since I’m no longer on the Board of Directors after serving 6 years. We held our 3rd Combination Clays Shoot involving Skeet, American and Wobble Trap plus the ever challenging International Bunker Trap. The shoot was 100 birds total with prizes awarded for many categories. We intend to do the same in 2017, with added shade to help beat the heat.It really doesn’t matter if you ever shot skeet or any of the clay bird disciplines, you’d be surprised how soon you’ll be breaking clay birds. What makes it enter-taining is the dynamics of hitting moving targets with instant feedback when suc-cessful. Anyone interested in skeet can contact me by e-mail at [email protected] or call me at 610-657-2178 and we can meet up at the club, Thursday afternoons and evenings are preferred. If that doesn’t work for you, I’m willing to try and ac-commodate your schedule other days. I’ll be glad to show you how skeet is shot, as it is not complicated, and it doesn’t take long to break the majority of the birds on the course. Come out and have some fun.

Senior Rifle Committee Annual Report – 2016During 2016, we scheduled monthly high power rifle matches. The match sched-uled for February had to be cancelled due to severe weather conditions. The re-maining matches resulted in a total of 58 participants shooting the course. These matches generated a total of $900.00 in revenue and offered National Rifle As-sociation (NRA) sanctioned tournaments. Many of our shooters achieved very high scores and were pleased that our club offers these events. There are many committed shooters that attend every match.Once again we are scheduling rifle matches every month in 2017. We are able to hold most of our matches the second weekend of the month which avoids conflicts with other club rifle matches held in our area. It is expected that we will be able to attract more shooters to our monthly events. These matches are open to club members and non-members whether or not they are members of the NRA. Everyone is welcome and it only requires just over an hour to shoot the match. The scores are reported to the NRA and after participa-tion in three matches, shooters are given an NRA shooting classification.
