O.M. Irwin School “Achieving Excellence”
April 2018
Principal’s Message
Thank you students, parents and guardians for
attending Student Led Conferences on March 26th
and March 28th. If you were not able to attend on
either of those dates, and you would like to
schedule a SLC with your child’s homeroom
teacher, please contact the school at 306-778-
9270 to set up a date and time to meet.
Transitions for students (grade-to-grade, or school-
to-school) are a high priority for staff each and
every spring as we work with home and school to
prepare students for the next step in their school
careers. The staff at Irwin School is already working
with students and parents in preparation for the
2018/2019 school year. It is important to begin the
transition process at this time as different students
have different needs in preparation for their next
grade’s placement. If you have any questions
about your child’s transition into the 2018/2019
school year, please call (306-778-9270) or email me
Also, as part of our school’s transition plan for next
year, I am pleased to announce that Mr. Arron
Kohlman will be O.M. Irwin School’s Principal
beginning in the 2018/2019 school year. Mr.
Kohlman is currently the principal of Herbert
School, and he will be an integral part of our
transition plan as we work to support your child’s
learning plan heading into next year. Mr. Kohlman
will be at Irwin on April 13 to introduce himself to
students and staff.
~ Mr. Kielo, Principal

SCC NEWS
A main area of focus at the last SCC meeting was brainstorming ideas for the development of a new outdoor area for our middle years kids! Although the grade 5, 6, 7 & 8 students can decide whether they’d like to stay in or go outside during their breaks, they have communicated that they would love to spend more time outside, but need somewhere to go. The SCC was proud to play a huge part in upgrading the playground for the younger grades when Irwin became a K-8 school, and are now extremely happy to be making a substantial financial contribution towards this amazing outdoor project for the older kids. Members of the SCC will be working alongside the staff, students and other community members to help make this happen. We are fortunate at Irwin that the SCC consists of our Principal, Vice Principal, teachers and parents of children in most grades from K-8, ensuring that all students are considered in the decisions we make. The Irwin staff has successfully worked, and continues to work very hard to develop an inclusive K-8 culture in our school, and the SCC supports that goal! The kids are proud of being Irwin students and already have that common bond. Along with many other things, activities like buddy reading and school fundraisers (dessert auction and upcoming garage sale!) are activities that will continue to strengthen the bond that already exists. Although the outdoor area for the older kids will be an ongoing project, the first phase is underway and this spring/summer we will see kids from K-8 enjoying their school… inside and outside! Have a wonderful Easter break
Thank you to the following people who support our O.M. Irwin students:
1. Our school’s Basketball Coaches
2. The community’s basketball officials that helped officiate all of our teams’ games this season.
3. The Staff @ Coles Bookstore for supporting the School’s Library through the Fundraiser Program.
4. Glenn Gawdin and Kaden Elder for their support of the Broncos I-Read Program.
5. Our SCC for its amazing support of the School’s Learning Plan.

On March 8th
, the O.M. Irwin Auction Night made a profit of $7,529.95 due to the generosity of our school
community and supporting businesses! Thank-you! This money will be used to purchase some equipment for

In Motion Commotion News By: Val Choo-Foo, City of Swift Current In Motion Coordinator
Spring is here!! Now it’s time to get outside and be physically active by going
for walks, biking, rollerblading, playing soccer, ball, basketball or football.
Whether children and adults are registered in structured activities or not, there
are many opportunities to be In Motion. Did you know that 65% of
Saskatchewan parents with 5-17 year olds report that parks and playgrounds
are within half a kilometre of their home? And this is definitely true for Swift
Current! We have 20 parks and playgrounds as well as tennis courts, a
skateboard park, horseshoe pits, soccer fields, and basketball courts. We are
also so fortunate to have over 20 kilometres of Chinook Parkway alongside the
Swift Current Creek. There are so many fun spring activities to participate in, so stay active and have fun!
