The medical faculties of the universities of Vienna, Gottingen, and Edinburgh were begun or reformed after the system that Boerhaave instituted at Leiden. The biologically minded Bonnet introduced it. His statue had nerves and you hear a great deal about the nervous fluid and the agitation of the nervous fluid and the agitation of the nervous fibres, discussion which resembled Hartley’s speculation about vibration and diminutive vibrations. NOTE: A charming original watercolour portrait of the beloved Australian children’s author and illustrator May Gibbs (1877-1969). Gibbs is most recognised for her gumnut babies, who first appeared on the cover of the January 1914 edition of The Lone Hand. They also inhabit her most famous works, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie (1918). May migrated to Australia from England with her parents when she was four years old. She returned to England to study art, although eventually settled in Sydney, taking up residence at Nutcote in the harbour side suburb of Neutral Bay, nowadays a museum, in 1925. Importantly, as noted by Richards (1988, p.58), May was ‘the first professionally-trained full-time children’s book illustrator to work in Australia.” A unique example of Australian illustration history. $5,000

(10), 1-38pp. Modern full folio calf, raised bands, bookplate of the Hon. Charles Townsend. Portrait of Hale by Frederik Van der Hove. First edition. Hales’s (1609-1679) a fascinating attempt to merge philosophy, science, natural history, and religious teaching. Particularly interesting are his observations on the origins of life in the Americas whose people he felt came across from Asia. The work in manuscript was in several parts. “1. Concerning the Secondary Origination of Mankind, fol. 2. Concerning Religion, 5 vols. in fol. viz.: (a) De Deo, Vox Metaphysica, pars 1 et 2; (b) Pars 3. Vox Naturae, Providentae, Ethicae, Conscientae; (c) Liber Sextus, Septimus, Octavus; (d) Pars 9. Concerning the Holy Scriptures, their Evidence and Authority; (e) Concerning the Truth of the Holy Scripture and the Evidences thereof.” Nos. 1 and 2 constitute a formal treatise in defense of Christianity, to the writing of which Hale devoted his vacant Sunday evening hours after the ‘Contemplations’ were finished. The composition of the work was spread over seven years, but appears to have been completed while he was still chief baron. The manuscript was submitted to Bishop Wilkins, who showed it to Tillotson. Both advised condensation, for which Hale never found leisure. The first part was published after his death as ‘The Primitive

Origination of Mankind considered and examined according to the Light of Nature’. In this very curious treatise Hale in the first place attempts to show that the world must have had a beginning; next, with lawyer-like caution, that if by possibility this were not so, the human race at any rate cannot have existed from eternity; then passes in review certain ‘opinions of the more learned part of mankind, philosophers and other writers, touching man’s origination, and finally defends the Mosaic account of the matter as most consonant with reason. The book was translated for Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg, the great elector, by Dr. Schmettau in 1683. The other parts have never been published. “DNB Wing H 258 (27955). $2,500

230 NEWTON, Sir Isaac. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Coloniae Allobrogum (i.e. Geneva), C. & A. Philibert, 1760. 2nd “Jesuits” Ed. in 3 vols. Quarto. With the ownership bookplate of Sir Everard Home. Text in Latin & French. 548, 422 and 703pp. which includes the index for all three volumes. Vol. 1. Half-title, p.384 mis-numbered 376, title-page in black and red. Volumes 2 & 3 in black only. Vol. 2. Small corner tears to p.59 & p.369. Vol. 3. P.632 mis-numbered 602, and printer’s error at the end of part two of vol. 3 the contents page is numbered 75 verso 76 and the beginning of part three is numbered 75 verso 76. Crease to half-title and title page, bound in contemporary calf, early rebacking to all three volumes with the original gilt spines laid down, inter-mitten browning to text. The text is based on that of the third edition, the last edition Newton edited before his death the following year. The 3rd Volume also contains additional commentary, chosen from prize winning essays which were submitted in 1724 to the Academie des Sciences to resolve the problem of the tidal effects of gravity: “Traite sur le flux et reflux de la mer” by Professor Daniel Bernoully (1700-1782), pages 133-246. “De causa physica fluxus et refluzus maris” by mathematician Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746), pages 247-282 and “Inquisitio physica in causam fluxus et refluxus maris” by Professor Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) pages 283-274. There is also a long Introduction to Newton’s Lunar Theory, pages 537-677. With its rich editorial content, extensive summaries and detailed index, the Jesuit edition remains the most ambitious and perhaps the most useful edition ever published. (R. Ted Steinbock, catalogue and exhibition). Provenance: Sir Everard Home, 1st Baronet FRS (b. Hull, 6 May 1756; d. 31 August 1832 in London) was a British Physician. He published prolifically on human and animal anatomy, and gave the Croonian Lecture to the Royal Society many times between 1793 and 1829. He also contributed to a treatise on structure of urethra, ulcers of the leg, cancer and diseases of the prostate. A recipient gold medal lyceum Medicum Londenense and Fellow Royal Master. NOTE: Following the pioneer researches of Galileo in the study of motion and its mathematical analysis and the important contributions of Descartes and Huygens, the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century culminated in the massive achievements of Newton in dynamics and gravitational astronomy. Kepler’s law of planetary motion came to be gradually accepted in the latter half of the century and unsuccessful attempts were made to account for them in terms of a central force emanating from the sun. The dependence of such a force on the inverse square of the distance was suggested by Robert Hooke, in particular, but neither he nor his scientific colleagues in London could prove that Kepler’s law follow mathematically from a law of this form. Halley put the problem to Newton, who showed that his Law of Gravity would cause a planet to move in an ellipse about the sun as focus. Halley then saw Newton’s mathematical analysis of motion through the press, and also bore the cost of printing, the Royal Society’s funds having been depleted. Newton’s new principles were based on his own innovations in mathematics. He showed that the dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to the universal law of gravitation could be explained, in mathematical terms, within a single physical theory. His work provides a great synthesis of the cosmos and proves it physical unity. Newton’s scientific views were not seriously challenged until Planck’s quantum theory and Einstein’s theories of relativity, but his principles and methods remain essential for the solution of many scientific problems. This work remains the most important in the history of science. $3,500
