“An Old Fashioned Red, White and Blue Fourth” Crest’s 70th July 4th Event
This year’s 70th Annual July 4th event will be bigger and better than ever. It’s not too late to ready up your homemade float, decorate your bike, horse, or golf cart, or gather up your friends dressed in their patriotic best and march your way to a fun-filled day. Are you a marching or musical group, or maybe you own an old antique car or tractor? Make your way to the park and tell the parade monitors you want to be judged in one of the categories seen on page 2. Judging starts at 8:30. The parade starts at South Lane Park and ends a little past Nancy Jane Park. Simply show up at South Lane Park from 7:30 - 8:15 a.m. and be ready to step off promptly at 9:30. There is no registration.
Maybe you just want to bring your chairs and watch the parade go by? Cheering spectators makes everyone happy. Check out the map on page 2 for the parade route and pick your favorite spot. Invite your friends and make note of the road closure times and alternate routes available between 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. on Monday the 4th.
The Crest July 4th event is an old fashioned family get-together. After the parade, come to Nancy Jane Park and listen to some great local music. Bring a picnic lunch or eat some tasty food cooked by our local Kiwanis. Watch children play old-fashioned games like 3-legged races, pitch (or watch) in the horseshoe tournament, or cool it in the beer garden behind the clubhouse. Shop the local craft vendors in the park, and don’t forget to bring money to buy raffle tickets to participate in the Crest Super Raffle located in the Crest Clubhouse.
WANT TO HELP OUT ON THE 4TH? 1. Remember the great super raffle from past years? It’s our very own Crest residents that make this
happen. Can you donate a basket, gift card, or other clever item for the super raffle to make this the best year ever? Call or text Denise at 360-770-0483 or email Denise at [email protected] or contact Linda [email protected] 619-517-9838 ) Contact Denise by June 24th so she and her crew can get things ready for another great super raffle. It would be great if all baskets and gift are received and ready to stage by Saturday, July 2nd.
2. Interested in becoming a vendor? For information call Kandhy Franklin 997-1566 or email at [email protected]
3. We could still use volunteer help. We always need an extra hand setting up at the park on the evening before (Sunday), and early morning on the 4th, to help with things like trash/recycle pickup, or other jobs as needed. Call Dave at 444-76- to signal that you could be available.
Road Closure Notice: The Parade will step off promptly at 9:30 from South Lane Park. Roads will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 10:30 while the parade makes its way north on Albatross, right on Suncrest/LaCresta, where it ends past Rainbow Market on Scenic. See page 2 for a detailed map. Alternate routes are available during road closures.

Parade Lineup Information: The parade will step off at 9:30 this year. If you
plan to participate in the parade, get to the park between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m. for lineup. The parade will line up on South Lane. Look for signs for your group either in the park or on the road. The parade steps off on Albatross, turns right on Suncrest Blvd/La Cresta Blvd (passes the library, Crest School, the fire station and Nancy Jane Park), ending at Rainbow market. The detour routes during the parade are shown on the map to your left. Note: dash line is parade route and dotted line is alternate route shown on the right.
The general parade lineup this year is planned as follows: fire engines, medic truck, grand marshals and military, Pots and Pan Band, antique tractors, motorcycles, floats, bicycles, golf carts and rhinos and 3-wheelers or quiet quads, car clubs, more floats, and horses. The parade will be followed by the trailer which will pick up the road barricades. Please enter the parade route to South Lane by Crest Drive (by the Catholic Church) so you will be facing in the right direction when you arrive. There will be volunteers to help guide you to your places. It is important that we demonstrate that we can monitor ourselves like we have for the past 69 years.
Those wishing to be judged for an award will need to make sure they get there early enough to complete a form giving your entry information so judges know who and where you are.
Award categories this year include: Best Individual, Best Group, Best Float, Best Motorized, Best
Horse, Best Jeep, Best Off-Road, and Best Golf Cart. Funniest/Most Creative, Best Theme, Most Patriotic, Sweepstakes.
Park Activities: 6:30 a.m. Vendors can begin arriving by 6:30 a.m. Check in at the clubhouse before you start to set up. Set up by 8:00 a.m. There will be a loading zone on south side of the park past the gazebo on Park Blvd. Note two handicapped parking spots will also be relocated on this side of the street due to the closure of N. Park Dr. (street where the clubhouse is). It is also important to know Burdette Blvd will also be closed during the event to allow the fire truck and display vehicles to make their way to the park after the parade.
7:30 – 8:30 Parade participants arrive at South Lane Park – Look for signs for your designated meeting place (i.e. horses, motorcycles, floats, etc.)
8:45 a.m. Road Closures starts at some locations for parade formation. Most roads close at 9:15. 9:00 a.m. Street monitors arrive at their corners 9:15 a.m. Monitors close streets 9:30 a.m. Parade starts 10:30 a.m. Parade ends (approximate time- depending on size of the parade.)

This year’s Grand Marshal of the Crest Parade is our very own Delaney Van Horn. Delaney has won many horse championships including Reserve World Championships and World Championships. Vendors Booths: We once again will have some great vendors on site selling their wares. Vendors will be set up by 8:00 am. Contact Kandhy Franklin if you are interested in being a vendor and to see if there are remaining spots available. Phone: 977-1566 or email [email protected]. Crest library will also hold its annual used book sale in the park on the 4th. Food: Food will be available in the food booths in front of the basketball court. Burgers, dogs, drinks, cotton candy, snow cones and nachos will be available. The Beer Garden Hours will be from 10-2 in the patio behind the clubhouse. Remember the drinking of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in Nancy Jane Park. . Games for Kids: Crest Community Church will be helping out with races, balloon tosses, and more. Music: We always love music in the park on the 4th. Thanks for Deb Blake, we have a great line up of music for the event: 8:00-9:30 a.m. - Cathryn Beeks and the Ordeal 10:30-11:30 (after the parade) – Cowboy Angels 12:30-1:30 – Louis Lacayo and Friends 1:30- 2:30 – Enter the Blue Sky
Super Raffle/Auction – If you’ve been to a Crest July 4th event you’ve most likely visited the very, very cool SUPER RAFFLE. Fabulous prizes for the
price of a raffle ticket of $1. Or better yet, buy tickets in volume, 6 tickets for $5, or 12 for $10. Simply put tickets in bag in front of your desired item and you may be the lucky winner. The proceeds go to support the Crest Community Center. Super Raffle/Auction Donations: IT’S STILL NOT TOO LATE TO DONATE SOMETHING COOL FOR THE SUPER RAFFLE. IN FACT WE COULD USE YOUR HELP. (Remember it doesn’t need to be big… although it could be! Do you have a gift card you want to donate, or would you like to donate a theme basket to the raffle? They are fun to make – what would you want in
a basket that would entice you to put a ticket in the bag? The ideas are endless. Do you have a set of Padre tickets you may not use due to vacation, Sea World passes, Zoo passes, play tickets or some great craft item you have made? How about that extra $5 McDonald’s gift card? (New items please.) We sure could use your help getting some super prizes. If we can get them by the last week of June it will give us time to make them spiffy to entice you just a little more. If you need to have your donation picked up, email Denise @ [email protected] or text her at 360-770-0483 or email [email protected] (619)517-9838. One of us can stop by and pick up your donation, no matter how big or small or we can meet you at the stores for a pick up.

Remembering our Crest Friends
Good-bye T.C. Burgess
by Mary Robinson
Patriot Guard Riders stand at attention as T.C. Burgess’ casket
arrives at Miramar National Cemetery.
Frances (T.C.) Burgess, Crest neighbor and archery expert, died in February after suffering a ruptured spleen resulting in a fatal case of sepsis. T.C. wasn't active in CCA. He didn't attend church or participate in the Kiwanis Club. His circle of friends was small and he lost touch with his own family after serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War. A few of us in Crest had the great pleasure of learning how to shoot a bow and arrow from T.C. Turns out he coached several Olympic hopefuls at the Chula Vista Training Center including actress Geena Davis. Of course, none of us ever aspired to compete at that level and we good-naturedly called our Sunday afternoon training sessions with T.C. “Booze and Bows.” When T.C. was admitted to Grossmont Hospital, he was visited by a few friends but no family members. In fact, after his death his brother and his own daughter refused to claim his body. The County Coroner's Office took custody of T.C.'s body, and there it remained for 6 weeks until KUSI aired a segment describing the sad state of affairs concerning this Vietnam veteran. Thanks to the story, the Navy stepped up to schedule a full military honors burial and Greenwood Mortuary donated a casket and funeral preparations. The Patriot Guard Riders provided a dozen or more motorcyles flying our nation's colors to escort the hearse and T.C.'s casket to Miramar National Cemetery for burial where 40 people paid their respects. The flag draped across T.C.'s coffin was
given to his friend who brought the story to the attention of KUSI. The moral of the story? We don't always know our neighbors but they may have a story to tell, a lesson to teach us. No one deserves to be abandoned at the end of their life. It's important that we work together, support each other and learn to love one another. Thank you KUSI, for bringing this story to light. And rest in peace, T.C
Bobbie Biery Gerrard 1945-2016
Bidding farewell and final best wishes for Bobbie Biery Gerrard.
A longtime resident of Crest, Bobbie loved her animals dearly, especially her dogs, most recently her beloved Rosie. Bobbie died at home on April 9th of this year.
Bobbie was born 1945 in the Chicago suburbs and spent her youth in Illinois and Southern California. As an adult, she lived briefly in Alaska and Washington State then settled in Vermont, and finally relocated to San Diego County.
Bobbie graduated Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and went on to Goddard College in Vermont to earn a master’s degree in Social Work. She later earned her Juris Doctor at University of San Diego. She was admitted to the California Bar in 1983, where she practiced law specializing in child and protective services.
She lived by the "keeping it local" mantra, trying to remain a loyal user of local goods and services whenever possible, in that way trying to benefit those close by in the Crest community.
We will miss Bobbie, her animals and her antics. May she Rest in Peace

Don Halte Don is a local favorite and we are
pleased he is able to grace us
with his presence and his bigger
than life voice.
Don loves old Americana and
folk numbers. Most of all, he
loves to entertain and we love to
be entertained by him!
He is semi-regular at Music Night and a Crest resident to boot.
Baird & Silva Baird & Silva mix original
music with gently twisted
audience favorites. Soaring
harmonies are always in
force - and you’ll just have to
guess how Tom does that
on guitar?!
From the website:
www.bairdsilva.com
……Tom Baird has been marching to the beat of his own drum
for decades. Penning many original pieces, Tom is a multi-
instrumentalist. He specializes in guitar for Baird & Silva and
concocts sounds you would never picture coming from an
acoustic guitar.
David Silva feels dedicated in helping to bring Tom’s creations
to life, He also performs in several other projects including
a’cappella in the San Diego area. He keeps the beat on
d’jembe here, but also plays guitar, bass, and most percussion.
Baird & Silva together are all about the harmonies…and the
twists.
As always, the event doubles as a fundraiser for the Crest Communi ty Association, with a $2 suggested donation at the door. (Kids always free!) We have 2 additional donation pots; 1 for the musicians, and 1 for snacks and refreshments. You can also B.Y.O.S.W. to enjoy while we play. (Bring Your Own Sensible Whatever) The musician's play 3 songs and then rotate throughout the evening so you get a chance to hear each group or individual several times if you choose to stay for the whole performance. If you have to leave early or come later, it's all good. You will still get to hear all of the different performers.
So, come on! Make it a moment...make it an evening. The CCA wins...you win!

I just want to wish everyone a safe summer and a Happy 4th of July, and to thank you for the referrals and listings. At the moment I have 2 listings in Crest that are perfect for that first time buyer or
someone who wants to down-size. I am more than happy to visit with you and talk about your plans. I am here to help with whatever decision you make in
buying or selling. My motto is: “I am here to sell your home, not just list it”. The market has very little inventory, and the interest rates are still very low making the time just right for a change. So, call me and let’s chat! Just as an added reminder, please notice the information regarding the CFSC logo we will use for our 2 evacuation routes. Kandhy Franklin 619-977-1566 [email protected]

From the Office of Supervisor Dianne Jacob 619-531-4766 619-206-9108 [email protected]
Get ready. East County may be in for
a tougher than-usual wildfire season. That’s the
message that Supervisor Dianne Jacob and fire
authorities are emphasizing as the region enters
the long, dry stretch that usually runs through fall.
“Because of the steady stream of rain earlier this
year, our grasses and other vegetation are this
summer and fall,” Supervisor Jacob said at a media
gathering this spring. Joining her at the event were
local Cal Fire Chief Tony Mecham, Holly Crawford
with the county Office of Emergency Services and
Chief Don Butz, president of the local Fire Chiefs’
Association and the Fire thicker than usual. And
once they dry out and turn brown, that means more
fuel for wildfires. Safe Council of San Diego
County. Bracing for a challenging wildfire season,
Cal Fire this spring beefed up staffing at local
stations earlier than usual. County officials advise
residents to register their cell phones and email
addresses with AlertSanDiego, which can directly
notify San Diegans in an emergency. Residents
can sign up by going to readysandiego.org. The
website includes other critical resources, including
information on how to prepare a family disaster
plan and get your property ready for the upcoming
wildfire season. It also has a searchable map that
charts the level of fire danger in communities
across the county. The interactive map was created
last year.

(619) 596-3136 [email protected] Here is a link to Senator Anderson’s webpage describing the internship program http://district38.cssrc.us/content/internship. For more information or to apply, contact Alex Adkins at 619-596-3136 or email her at [email protected].
Stephanie Alvarez Testimonial: As a former Legislative Intern for Senator Anderson, I want to touch on the experiences I had with this internship program. It not only taught me the important tools that will allow growth and success in the future, but challenges all interns to become better in everything and gives them firsthand experiences in politics. This internship offered me a wide range of experiences. I loved getting to work on a variety of projects such as doing research on different topics and legislation, or going out to the community on behalf of Senator Anderson and talking to constituents. Walking door to door in neighborhood across the district and going out to community meetings and events were the best ways for me to see how politics work, have an understanding for what the community needs, and see what the senator has done for them. Working with the caseworker for Senator Anderson was the highlight of my internship experience. My favorite part was helping the constituents with different issues. Being able to listen to the constituents and to watch the caseworker connect the dots and help them solve their issues with state agencies, while going the extra mile to actually assist every single person that called, was inspiring to me. This is not an ordinary internship. You are given the treatment and responsibilities that a staff member would have. It is an educational program that opens the door to different opportunities. It also allows one to make good friends along the way. This internship has taught me the way an office functions; most importantly, it taught me that providing excellent service to your constituents is an important part of politics, especially in order to make state government work
