Glass as a material offers almost unlimited application pos-sibilities, whether in private homes, commercial premises or high-rise buildings. Glass allows the realisation of modern and timeless facades, balcony glazing, conservatories and much more – the design options are almost unlimited. The comfortable living ambiance with light and bright interi-or spaces meets high standards in terms of heat insulation, solar and acoustic protection. The structural characteristics also demonstrate an impressive range of properties: glass is malleable and solid; it offers countless finishing possibilities and is also weather-resistant and easy to clean.Alongside the many benefits that glass has to offer for man-kind, windows, facades, walkways and acoustic insulation walls pose a risk for wild birds. However well-adapted their visual acuity to their natural surroundings might be, they have great difficulty discerning glass obstructions. On the one hand, because glass is transparent and birds see entic-ing indoor plants and landscapes behind it. On the other hand, because it reflects the surroundings with the result that the birds want to fly to the trees and sky mirrored in it.Environmental organisations are increasingly calling attention to these two unfortunate phenomena. In response to this, Glas Trösch has been in contact with the Swiss Ornithological Insti-tute Sempach and has set out in search of solutions in the area of reflections.

The whole product line offers boundless possibilities for cre-ative architectural thinking. No matter whether the glass em-ployed is required to be non-reflective or clear, irrespective of the thermal insulation, light transmission or sun protection levels called for – Glas Trösch has the right glass to guard against bird collisions for every project and challenge. It offers the following solutions:

S BIRDprotect STREET

The glass featuring distinctive designs that are clearly visible for people and animals (e.g. for acoustic insulation walls, bus stops etc.).

H SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME

The insulating glass for thermal insulation (e.g. for residential buildings) that reduces irritating reflections.

In order to reduce the collision risk arising from reflections, a number of years ago Glas Trösch began to develop a special sun protection glass with the help of the Swiss Ornithological Institute. This work led to the following new product:

O SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE

The insulating glass with thermal and sun protection (e.g. for office buildings and public complexes). The patented inner coating which is barely perceptible to the eye and still permits through vision, significantly reduces collisions.A range of designs is available for this line.

SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect – a product line developed in collaboration with the Swiss Ornithological Institute

Recommended by the Swiss Ornithological Institute.

Birds have long been the undisputed masters of the air. Obstacles were always visible and birds able to avoid them adroitly. However, evolution has not equipped them to cope with hazards such as glass walls. Here collisions with glass stem from two different causes, for which Glas Trösch offers three different solutions.

Visual perception in birds

Transparency

The most common cause of collisions is glass’ transparency. A bird looks through a glass frontage and sees a tree, the sky or an appealing landscape. It heads straight for it, colliding with the pane of glass in the process. The more transparent and larger the glass frontage, the greater the danger.

The solution to the problem:

S BIRDprotect STREET – the glass with a pattern that is clearly visible for birds (for application examples, see pages 10 and 11).

Page 5: “At last, a glass that I can see as well.” · 2021. 1. 30. · balcony walls, walkways, corner glazing, bus stops and telephone boxes that are intended to provide protection against

3

There are two possible solutions to this problem:

H SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME: the insulating glass with thermal insulation – and minimal reflection (for application examples, see pages 10 and 11).

O SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE: the glass with sun protection – and a pattern that interrupts confusing reflections (for application examples, see pages 10 and 11).

Reflection

The second cause is reflection. Depending on the window pane type, the lighting and the building interior, the environment is reflected to a greater or lesser extent. If the reflected image is of a park, the bird is deceived into thinking that it is an attrac-tive environment. It flies straight towards it, unaware that it is only the reflected image.

S The bird-friendly solution for noise insulation walls, balcony walls, walkways, corner glazing, bus stops and

telephone boxes that are intended to provide protection against noise and the elements. A printed, laminated film or a design directly on the glass prevents through vision and makes

it clearly visible for people and animals, subject to certain con-ditions. BIRDprotect STREET is available in an extensive range of sizes and design variants as insulating, single-pane safety glass and laminated safety glass.

BIRDprotect STREET

Left-hand side: Glazed noise protection walls can pose a serious danger for birds. However well-adapted their visual acuity to their natural surroundings might be, they have great difficulty in identifying glass as a barrier.

Right-hand side: A two-dimensional motif is decorative and provides effective protection. Even a dot pattern, such as here on the bridge, fulfils its purpose, since the bird does not perceive it as such.

The low-reflectivity, anti-collision insulating glass for single and multiple family houses and “Minergie” build-

ings, designed to keep in the heat and save energy. SILVER-STAR BIRDprotect HOME is available as double or triple insu-lating glass in any desired size and finish.

With this glass, external reflection is reduced while transpar-ency is retained. Green plants close to the window pane in-doors may detract from the effect.

SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME

Left-hand side: The popular stick-on bird of prey silhouettes generally fail to bring about the desired effect – SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME on the other hand provides a remedy.

Right-hand side: Total transparency with unobstructed view to the outside.

O The bird-friendly insulating glass for office buildings, prestigious buildings and public complexes that are

generally air-conditioned and require both heat and sun pro-tection.A discreet, visible design in the sun protection glass interrupts the high reflection, thereby greatly reducing the number of

collisions. Special designs (see separate design sheet) which do not detract from the effectiveness of the sun protection glass have been developed for this purpose.SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE is available as double or triple insulating glass in individual sizes and coatings accord-ing to requirement.

SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE

Left-hand side: Sun protection glass may represent a serious danger for birds. The SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE product line greatly reduces the collision risk.

Right-hand side: SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE and con-ventional glass were installed alternately in the Kottenmatte sports hall at the Sursee vocational training centre in order to test the effect.

Windows

On residential dwellings, the SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME insulating glass is used for the windows. This has

an exceptionally high insulation value and also reduces irritat-ing reflections – for the benefit of birds.

The problem: The solution: reflection SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect HOME

Balcony glazing

Here, the danger of balcony glazing for birds is that they look through it, because they fail to perceive it as an ob-

struction. This is why BIRDprotect STREET is used.

Our recommendation: BIRDprotect STREETBy their very nature, corner glazing installations call for a BIRDprotect STREET solution, although SILVER-STAR BIRDprotect HOME may also be used depending

on the situation (for example with a curtain panel in the cor-ner.).

Noise insulation wall / bus stop

Acoustic insulation walls have absolutely no thermal function; they serve only to provide priv-

acy and noise insulation. They should pose an easily iden-tifiable obstruction for birds for which reason BIRDpro-tect STREET is used in these applications. This protects people from rain, wind and snow while waiting for buses. On the other hand, it protects birds against the fatal con-sequences of flying into it.

SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE

Individual bird-friendly facade motifs to customer wishes

Whereas SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE was previously only available in the form of vertical stripes, it is now possible to apply individual designs to the glass that can be seen by birds, providing them with effective protection.Unobtrusively visible motifs which offer transparency and provide the best possible anti-collision protection for birds at the same time, can be designed exactly in line with custom-er wishes and reproduced on the insulating glass. Whether graphic designs of any kind, company logotypes or logos, any-thing is possible subject to some simple rules.

Repetitive designs

When creating custom designs, the pattern repeat on the glass needs to be taken into account. Due to the manufactur-ing process of SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE, the printing on every pane of glass is identical, with the result that the pat-terns repeat and there are no flowing transitions on glass fa-cades. With logotypes and logos, the pattern can be arranged in a way that allows flowing transitions.

Page 23: “At last, a glass that I can see as well.” · 2021. 1. 30. · balcony walls, walkways, corner glazing, bus stops and telephone boxes that are intended to provide protection against

3

Palm-area rule

Since many birds are used to flying through dense branch-es, they perceive even small “holes” as a gap through which they can fly. Bird behaviour is just the same with SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE designs as with natural branches. In or-der to ensure compliance with the criteria for highly effective anti-bird-collision glass, the palm-area rule devised by the Swiss Ornithological Institute is followed. It states that areas of unprinted glass should not be larger than the palm of a hand, otherwise birds would perceive such an area as a gap through which they could fly, thereby failing to provide optimum pro-tection. Adherence to the palm-area rule is apparent in the design of the SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE reference site of Glas Trösch AG in Steffisburg. A motif has been created in the form of an unobtrusive bamboo-like pattern which offers highly ef-fective protection, refined aesthetics and maximum possible transparency. In order to satisfy the criteria when creating a custom SILVER-STAR BIRDprotect OFFICE design, the Glas Trösch partner companies and the advice centre are available for assistance at any time.

Designs

Our standard motifs will give an indication of the wide scope for individual design with SILVERSTAR BIRDprotect OFFICE. The new designs, which provide transparency and effective anti-collision protection for birds, were created in conjunction with the Swiss Ornithological Institute and in accordance with the ornithological requirements (see page 4).

Individuality is also paramount with the BIRDprotect STREET product line. Printed or laminated dot and line patterns are suitable, as well as uninterrupted designs. These can also

be produced to customer wishes. Glas Trösch offers almost unlimited possibilities; however, adherence to the palm-area rule for unprinted glass sections is important at all times.
