Weekly Collections

LENTEN DISCIPLINE Ash Wednesday Masses: 7am, 12:03, 1:30 (school Mass), 5:15 and 7 pm - all in the Church. During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. (For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.) Rice Bowls will be available again this year for use in almsgiv-ing; money is used for the hungry locally and globally. RE-TURN RICE BOWLS AT HOLY THURSDAY MASS. We will have our usual 2 Masses per day, Penance at various times, Stations of the Cross, special adult education available on Thursday nights, the Blessed Sacrament exposed 24/7 for prayer, and many other opportunities to pray, fast, and give alms. Please pray especially for those who have entered the Church this year and now experience their final preparation for recep-tion of the Sacraments on Holy Saturday.

All are invited to sessions during Lent studying the Scriptural no on of Covenant.

On Sundays in Lent this year, we read from Cycle B in the Lec onary. Those readings deal with the successive covenants God has made with his peo-ple—Abraham, Noah, Moses, and Jesus. The fo-cus of the sessions will be on the Sunday readings as a basis for the discussion of Covenant.

You are welcome to come to one, any, or all of the sessions—which will be held Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 in the School Computer Room. Park on the lower lot and enter the door there; the com-puter room is 10 feet away. (There will be signs in the area to direct you.)

The first session will be Thursday, February 22, 6:30pm

TODAY WE CELEBRATE World Day of the Sick be-cause it is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Lourdes is the fa-mous pilgrimage site of healing. Please pray for so many we know who suffer sickness and the sick everywhere in our world, especially those plagued by long sickness. Living Liturgy says “Sickness prevents us from doing the things we normally do. We can’t enjoy the ordinary pleasures of life, and we are separated from our circle of friends and colleagues. Illness dis-connects us from life and from our community, and it isolates us from the world. Remembering the sick, praying for them, and visiting them restores that connection. It brings the people who are sick, even if they are not physically present, back into the hearts and minds of the community. And when a cure is not possible . . . it still assures them they will never be alone in their suffering.”

St. Peter Registered Nurses

A parish nurse course (Faith Community Nursing) will be offered March 9-12, 2018 in Jefferson City. This ministry is a very rewarding way to apply the faith you have re-ceived and the nursing skills you have developed. This wonderful opportunity will be provided right here in Jeffer-son City by the Faith Based Health Ministry Network through Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Mis-souri. If you are interested and would like more infor-mation about parish nursing and/or the course please contact Alice at 636-8159x369.

NURSE’S NOTES

Lent is a time of Renewal On Ash Wednesday, we pray that God our Father will fill us with the Holy Spirit, purify our hearts, and strengthen us in love. We ask the Holy Spirit: “May we be filled and satisfied by the word which you give us, to be loving in the ordinary events of daily life, to abstain from what we do not really need, and to help our brothers and sisters in distress.” Think about how you can make Lent holy through both self-denial and positive action. Can Lenten discipline help you be more attentive to your physical, mental and spiritual health? Maybe you could revisit New Year’s resolutions and pick one or more to renew. Think of your neigh-bors and explore how you can assist those in need. Maybe vol-unteer as a Caring Neighbor and bring Holy Communion to that homebound, visit our parishioners in nursing homes, help at the Samaritan Center, etc. Lent is the time to renew yourself in your relationship to God and to others. Pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you on your journey.

Parish nurse office hours are by appointment. Please let us know if you or a family member is hospitalized or homebound and/or if you would like me to visit, pray with you and assist you with questions and health care concerns. Call or email me if you can help us with our Caring Neighbors ministry – more are needed! You may contact me at 636-8159x369 or via email [email protected]. Prayer Partners February 2018 Intention:

Pray for Bishop-emeritus John Gaydos as he begins his retire-ment and for Bishop-elect Shawn McKnight as he is ordained and begins to serve us as teacher, minister, and shepherd of the people of our diocese. Pray also that as Lent begins on Ash Wednesday/Valentine’s Day, we may learn to love more and to serve others with more love.

Inclement Weather

Parish

In the event of inclement weather (snow, ice, etc. that closes the school), the parish staff will attempt to open the Parish Office if travel is safe. If you need to come to the office on such a day, please call the office be-fore making the trip, and be aware that office hours will most likely be shortened due to the weather. If you have an activity at Church and the weather is bad, call the Parish Office to see if your activity is still taking place.

School

School cancellations due to weather will be sent 1st by text. So if you are not signed up you can do so by vis-iting the school webpage and looking under the parent information tab.

They will then post it on the school website & Face-book. The television and radio stations will be contact-ed.

Email is not their preferred way of notification, unless they are already at school and will be dismissing early.

Please do not call the school to see if they are cancel-ling early. When a decision is made the parents are the first to know!

Marriage Tip

In marriage, arguments are seldom black and white, “I’m right and you’re wrong.” Look for the golden mean when you’re on opposite sides.
