Another calendar year has started. I, for one, am not quite sure where the last year went. Looking back on 2017 seems a blur. Oh, there were some moments of pure joy and even some funny times too. I managed to capture those moments in many photos. That excitement on my grandchildren’s faces. The huge smiles at Rod’s graduation. My daughter’s tears as he went off to college. Lots of food. The big moments are there tucked in my mind. I have a lot of moments from other years too. A lot of those memories are moments of camera club days when nearly the entire club would come together for parties in September to start off a new club year. Field trip, field trip and field trip memories. Probably made some of my best friendships on those field trips. Meetings where the judge or presenters failed to show up. Meetings where only a handful of folks could get there. Meeting rooms and meeting places. For most of you reading this, you only know this one place that we meet at the church on Mt.

For most of you reading this, you only know this

one place that we meet at the church on Mt. Oak Rd. but I can tell you stories of the multiple rooms we met in on a monthly basis. Those stories seem so funny now but then, whew.

As I wind down my career as president of the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club, I remember all the stories of friends and places and the great times we have had. The crazy motels we have stayed (Cool Wink) and the friends we have shared time with. 2018 gives us another fresh new start. A new chance to take lots of photos, enter competitions, learn something new, enjoy the moment. Now there is a new list of things yet to accomplish.

To all my Dear FRIENDS scattered in various parts of the country, wishing you all, wherever you may be, a very Happy, Healthy and Wonderful New Year!

Steve Bruza won first place in the Baltimore Sun’s “Sunshots” contest with the theme of “Twist”. His image was of a parking lot exit ramp. It can be seen at the following link: www.tinyurl.com/y8972ewv Steve was not the only recent winner of this contest. Zolt Levay also won recently with the theme, “Flowing.” His image of the Potomac River at Great Falls was a winner. Baltimore Sun photographer, Algerina Perna said, “The slow shutter speed, high angle and great composition work together in creating this spectacular

image. Even the clouds and sky color are cooperating!” Vince Ferrari has had some photographs accepted into some exhibits recently. His photograph “Hangin’” was accepted into the City of Alexandria’s Art Purchase Awards, and will be shown in City Hall for the next three months. He also won acceptance into the Maryland Federation of Art’s 2018 “Focal Point” exhibit with a photograph of the 2017 total solar eclipse. And a third image will hang at a gallery in Portland, Oregon, as part of a show on self-portraiture.

January Photo Talk MeetingTravel - January 15

by Bob Matthews, VP Photo Talk

Photo Talk will start out the new year talking about Travel Photos. Note that the January 2018 meeting will be held on January 15, 2018, the third Monday of the month.

We will discuss types of Travel Photos and look at the reasons that we and other photographers take Travel Photos. And we’ll discuss what makes a “good” Travel Photo. I’ll show sample images of Travel Photos from both well-known photographers and lesser known, emerging photographers. Following Terry Barrett’s “Three steps to critiquing images” (from his book Criticizing Photographs, An Introduction to Understanding Images, copyright 1996, 1990; published

by Mayfield Publishing Company), we’ll try to briefly describe each photo; interpret what we think the maker was trying to show us; and evaluate the photo.

And of course, the bulk of the evening will be spent reviewing and discussing club members’ images from the previous week’s monthly club competition. So come on out and hear what other club members think of our images. And maybe contribute your own thoughts on other’s photo, or just listen to what other club members have to say. Maybe you’ll hear something that could apply to your photography as well.

Competition CornerDecember Competition Results

by Dick Chomitz, VP Competition

The competition for December 4 had 138 entries submitted by 71 competitors. This month we had a weaker turn out of entries. Novices were unable to have their own color competition due to the drop. I know the holidays do take most of your time so I’m hoping January has a great turnout. Warren Kahle, a past member of B-CCC was our judge for the evening and did a great job judging and giving advice on how to improve the pictures that were submitted for the Silhouette Contest. Thanks to the many club members who helped the evening go smoothly – those who set up and cleaned up the meeting hall; those who accepted and handled the prints, and our projectionist who ran the digital competition. Without these people there would be no competition. Congratulations to the winners of the

Silhouette Competition. We ask that competitors follow these few procedures to help ensure that prints are handled smoothly and efficiently:• Have your entry slip filled out completely before stepping up to the table to submit your prints. We recommend printing the entry form from the B-CCC website. It is found under the competition tab. There is a date window on the entry form which will provide you the correct date if you press the “down” arrow.• Make sure to include an UP arrow and the submission class (Novice or Advanced) on the back of each print.• Make sure the information on the back of your prints is legible and dark enough to be read in dim light.• Don’t submit double-matted prints.

The Newseum, on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, is presenting an exhibit entitled “Creating Camelot”. To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of President John F. Kennedy, this photo exhibit showcases more than 70 intimate and iconic images of the President, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and their children, Caroline and John. The images were taken by the Kennedy’s personal photographer,

Jacques Lowe. The original negatives of nearly all of the 70 images were lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Lowe, who died in May 2001, had stored his negatives in a World Trade Center bank vault.

The exhibit ends on January 7, so get there soon. For more information, visit:

Picture This! This month: Try a field trip

by Karen Ackermann Want to meet club members, learn stuff, and shoot things? Go on a FIELD TRIP (or two or three or eight)! Final trip selections are made by the field trip committee during the summer before the club year starts. The September Viewfinder includes the full list of field trips as part of the club calendar. Generally, one field trip per month is available during each month of the club year.

Options abound! From half-day to whole day local trips to overnighters to multiday trips. From a few people to a large group. From free to a modest entrance fee to significant traveling expenses. From “show up whenever” to tightly scheduled trips. Drive alone or carpool to the location. Once there, go it solo or follow along with one or more of the more experienced people to observe their technique and ask questions. From the familiar to the challenging, whether location or subject matter or weather or . . . who knows what photo opportunities might appear!

Descriptions of the field trips and details about directions, meeting time and place, contact information for the trip leader, etc., appear in the Viewfinder. Information may also appear on the club’s website. Add your name to the sign-up sheet, if one is used, on a club meeting night or contact the trip leader directly. Trip coordinating e-mails from the trip leader to the signed-up attendees will follow to finalize plans.

My first field trip experience was in February 2013 to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I felt awkward, incompetent, and

lost. I felt so out of my league but I stuck it out, asked a few questions of club members whose names I didn’t even know, took shots inside and out, then skulked home, thinking I would never be good enough (good enough for what, exactly, I didn’t know but wasn’t that vagueness in and of itself enough of a reason to doubt my sanity in joining a camera club when I had so little prior experience?). By November 2013, I had regained enough gumption to attend my next field trip, which I call the Shenandoah trip. This was a multistop, tightly scheduled trip involving appointments for tours at the Copper Fox Distillery (no samples, darn!), Central Coffee Roasters (buy a cup), and MTO Kombucha (have

a free sip). Thus fortified, we took a short hike up Stony Man Mountain to shoot from the overlook and ended with shooting the sunset from the car pullover lot that provided a profile view of the “Stony Man” and some great cloud formations. Wow, what a day! Now I was hooked on field trips and wanted to go on more, more, more! Sign me up!

Have you been on a memorable field trip? Consider sharing your story and/or a photo or two in Picture This! And, remember to submit several of your field trip images to the Viewfinder to include in the post-trip photospread.

February Competition JudgeOur judge for February’s “Travel” Competition will be Roy Sewall

Text by Roy Sewall

Roy Sewall spent most of his youth in India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines; his State Department family’s home base was the Washington, D.C., area. Roy has a B.S. in Physics from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland and an M.S. in Engineering Science from Penn State. He returned permanently to the Washington area in 1969 and worked for several major technology corporations for over 30 years.

Roy’s interest in photography evolved from extensive travel in six continents. In 2001, he started his transition to full-time photographer. He always found the Washington area to be one of the most photogenic locations in the world. Roy’s first photography book, Our Potomac, from Great Falls through Washington, D.C., was published in 2005; it was inspired by his affection for hiking and bicycling along the river and the adjacent Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal. The book has led to numerous lecture and slide show engagements with local organizations, and established him as one of the leading photographers of the Potomac River and C&O Canal. Roy has done extensive photography work for river and C&O Canal-related government and non-profit organizations, as well as private and commercial clients.

Roy’s second book, Great Falls and Mather Gorge, was published in 2009. In addition, he was a guest on WETA’s TV program Great Views of Washington D.C., the lead photographer in the Best of D.C. 2009 publication, in the feature articles in the 2009/2010 D.C. and 2012/2013 Virginia Where Guestbooks, the lead still photographer in The Nature Conservancy’s 2011 video The Potomac Gorge.

After completing Great Falls and Mather Gorge, Roy turned to the creation of large fine art prints. He has developed diverse bodies of work for exhibitions that include unusual foreign and domestic landscapes, old European architecture, historical re-enactment, and abstracts. In addition, he offers both private and group instruction to novice and intermediate photographers, and in 2014 became an instructor for the Capital Photography Center.

But his foremost passion is his ongoing project called “Mysterra” - illusions that convey mystery, fantasy, and whimsy.

Roy has many other photographic triumphs to add to his long list of credentials, so I refer you to his website for a complete list. It is impressive, and may act as a guide and inspiration to some of you for further quests in your own work: www.roysewallphotography.com

Roy has also just completed a year of service to his photo club, the North Bethesda Camera Club. He is currently an instructor for the Capital Photography Center. Their upcoming classes are updated monthly looking out 2-3 months. One of his favorite classes that he does for CPC is “The Small Studio.” This shows how to set up a studio in your own home. Roy can tell us more about this when he visits as judge in February.

B-CCC Photo Exhibit Coming to Prince George’s Community CollegeThe exhibit will begin in March, 2018

by Bob Matthews, Exhibit Coordinator The Bowie-Crofton Camera Club has been invited by the Prince George’s Community College to mount an exhibit next March. We will be able to hang 40 to 50 photos. The show will open Monday March 5, 2018 (show will be hung on Saturday, March 3, 2018) and will come down on Thursday, April 12, 2018. PGCC will also host a reception for the show on Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Note that the gallery will be closed from March 12 - 16 for Spring Break.

There will be a sign-up sheet available at B-CCC meeting in December and January for those interested in joining the exhibit. Or you can email me at [email protected] or [email protected]. I will be accepting 2 to 3 images from each person. There is no theme for the exhibit or judging of images.

General Guidelines for the exhibition:

• There is no theme for the exhibit.

• All images must be original photos taken by club members in good standing (dues paid).

• Subject matter must be appropriate for the family nature of the gallery.

• Images must be submitted in “ready to hang condition”.; that is matted, framed, and securely wired on the back for hanging.

• Framed size should be under 40” x 40”. 16x20 or 20x16 is recommended, but smaller is quite acceptable.

• Frame: Neat, clean, sturdy, and complementing artwork.

• Mats: Neat, clean, and professionally cut.

• Glass: Clean inside and out.

January How-To Meeting - Jan. 29Seeing in Black and White - Greg Holden

by Jeanine Cummins, VP How-To

In today’s digital world, where a camera is as close as your phone, it is easy to capture vivid color images of all life’s events. However, pick up any magazine or book, follow any popular photographer on-line, or walk through any gallery and you will still see many black & white images. Why is black & white still relevant in our color world? In his presentation, Greg Holden will explain why B&W images are not only still relevant, but often the better choice for showcasing the strengths of your images. While showing side-by-side color and B&W versions of his images, Greg will demonstrate how removing color from an image forces the viewer to

focus on the shapes, lines and lighting in the image.

Greg will discuss how to train your eyes to look past the color of things and instead focus on shapes and light. He will discuss how he searches scenes for interesting shadows, textures and patterns and pre-visualizes what the black & white conversion will look like. Throughout the presentation, he will also discuss his post-processing techniques for creating his images and how processing a black and white image is different than working with a color image.

Greg Holden’s Bio: Greg Holden is a photographer from Rockville, Md who uses his photography to share with others how he sees the world. While Greg has enjoyed viewing many beautiful sunrises and landscapes, he finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his creativity. Greg is always looking beyond the obvious and photographing the things that others might not even notice like an acorn sprouting, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile, or patterns in the windblown sand of a local beach. Greg is an avid hiker and many of his photos are from National Parks. Greg enjoys teaching others and sharing his passion for photography and teaches several classes through the Capital Photography Center(www.capitalphotographycenter.com).You can see Greg’s work on his website: www.imagesunderfoot.com

Parting Shot

This month’s Parting Shot is from Al Alexander. If you would like your image and story presented here, send it to: [email protected].

Juneau, Alaska’s remote capital, sits in the state’s panhandle, at the base of 3,819-ft Mount Roberts. Alaska’s state capital is also one of its most beautiful cities and one of the most visited communities in the state. Downtown Juneau sits snuggly between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts, and Gastineau Channel, and is a maze of narrow streets running past a mix of new structures, old storefronts and quaint houses featuring early 19th century architectures left over from the town’s early gold mining days. Juneau is a popular cruise-ship stop, reachable only by boat or seaplane. Juneau’s downtown area is compact, easy to navigate on foot and always a favorite with visitors.
