TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, October 11th

Matthew 22:1-14 “Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. Some ignored the invitation . . . The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, “The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.”’”

“The king in the Gospel is persistent in his generosity and hospitality, even after tragedy befalls his servants. Through our generosity, God’s generosity is effected. It is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. In baptism, we were invited to the feast. But we were also invited to build the kingdom of God. We are called to be generous and welcoming as well.”

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia Invite You to Celebrate Laudato Sí Year

Pope Francis designated May 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021 as Laudato Sí Year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his landmark encyclical on the care for our common home. The following is a reflection on excerpts from Laudato Sí.

Pope Francis’s Laudato Sí #23, 25: The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all. At the global level, it is a complex system linked to many of the essential conditions for human life. Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.

Reflection: What grave implications come to mind when you think about the effects climate change will have on the environment? Human health? Economic implications? Do you know anyone who is already suffering the grave consequences of climate change? (Reflection provided by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.)

Continuous Religious Instruction For The Faith Development Of Your Child

The Religious Education Program is a curriculum of continuous religious instruction for students. We offer classes beginning in first grade and continuing each year through eighth grade. Attendance at each grade level is important in order to establish a firm foundation in the faith, build upon it at each grade level, and prepare for the Sacraments. We are offering remote/online learning as we begin the 2020-2021 school year. Students will have access to the e-book from RCL Benziger, our book publisher and also Zoom instruction with a catechist. Online instruction will continue until such time that we can safely invite students and catechists back to the classroom. NOW ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR NEW STUDENTS! Whether your child is entering first grade, or perhaps your children are older and transferring from another parish, or perhaps you already have a child in the program and need to register a new child, we’re here to help. Registration can be done online or we can mail a registration form to your home.

A Message from the Archdiocese of Newark Catechetical Office

Dear 8th Grade Parents, The Archdiocese’s Catholic High Schools have begun the enrollment process for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Cooperative Admissions Program (COOP) is designed to assist 8th-grade students and their families as the student seeks admission to Catholic high school. Information about each Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Newark can be found at https://catholicschoolsnj.org/high-school-guide/ The Archdiocesan High schools use the student’s grades from 6th, 7th and 8th grade and standardized testing results in making admissions decisions. Schools also consider a student’s record of satisfactory attendance and conduct, as well as recommendations from teachers and/or principals. Many secondary schools have additional criteria for admission such as visits, essays, etc. Regardless of other requirements, students may not begin high school unless they have successfully completed 8th grade. Please consult the individual high school for additional information about their application process. Please note that the COOP Exam Program/HSPT is canceled this year due to the COVID19 health crisis and safety concerns for all students.

The Academy of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an educational community with roots in the Roman Catholic faith that teaches gospel values. Within our Carmelite tradition we are dedicated to helping students see God in themselves, in each other and in the world around them. We strive to educate the whole person–intellectually, spiritually, physically, socially and emotionally–while building a strong foundation of ethical and moral ideals.

We invite you to explore our website and reach out to us

JOHN CARDINAL NEWMAN Feast Day: October 9 Canonized: October 13

Lead, Kindly Light: The Hymn and Its Author presented by Fr. Ashley Harrington

Do you have a favorite hymn? Everybody has. Indeed, some people have several favorite hymns. Here is one hymn that is claimed by many as their favorite. Presidents William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, and Franklin D. Roosevelt all identified Lead, Kindly Light as their favorite hymn. Lead, Kindly Light also exerted a powerful influence upon Mahatma Gandhi’s spirituality and India’s struggle for independence. It also assumed an important place in Gandhi’s developing understanding of religious pluralism. This beloved hymn was written by a Catholic saint, John Cardinal Newman.

John Newman lived to the age of 90. For the first 44 years of his life he was a member of the Anglican Church. For the last 45 years he belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. His faith journey became one of the most interesting conversion stories of the 19th century.

Born in London, studied at Oxford, tutored at Oriel College, and served as ordained pastor of the Anglican Church, St. Mary the Virgin. In 1833 he joined the Oxford Movement. This movement consisted of professors and scholars who were considered members of the “High Church” of Anglicanism. They suggested that the Church of England rediscover some older Christian traditions of faith that had been preserved in Catholicism. They noted that the historical study of the Church of England led them into the Catholic tradition.

As an Anglican priest John Newman took a trip to the south of Europe. He hoped that this trip would calm his soul, beset with doubts about his faith and his vocation. While traveling in Sicily he came down with a severe fever and a case of homesickness. He decided to end the trip and board a freighter carrying oranges to return him home to England. While on board the ship, he became more deeply ill. The ship became stranded on the way and, lying on the deck looking at a distant lighthouse and longing for some peace of body and soul, Newman wrote this poem, Lead, Kindly Light. The poem later became a hymn that sang of the comfort and reassurance that God leads us when we are lost in spirit. Newman soon realized the light was God and home was the ancient faith. He pleads not to see his future path but that God only show him this day the light for his next step.

By 1845 John Newman was received into the Roman Catholic Church. Three years later he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. The story of his conversion is related in his spiritual autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua. Two years later he joined the Congregation of the Oratory and founded Oratory houses in Birmingham and London. During his lifetime he wrote over 40 books and served as rector of Catholic University of Ireland. The tradition of intellectual Catholicism continues to this day on many American campuses in the Newman Center movement.

In 1879 Pope Leo XIII named him a Cardinal. In 2010 John Cardinal Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict in London. Pope Francis canonized Newman on October 13, 2019.

Lead, Kindly Light

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home, Lead thou me on! Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene—one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou Shouldst lead me on. I loved to choose and see my path; but now Lead thou me on! I loved the garish days, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years.

So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still Will lead me on; O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till The night is gone. And with the morn those angel faces smile, Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
