“Connecting to God, each other, and the world”
It’s not for your sparkling wit,
your wonderful fashion sense,
your worldly knowledge and
wisdom, your happy disposi-
tion; it’s not even for your of-
fering, it’s because YOU BRING
CHRIST with you. (And others
bring Christ to you!)
From the beginning the Christian church has been about bring-
ing people together in sacred ways.
Jesus said,
John 13:34-35
Tertullian, (160-220) imagined the point of view of a nonbeliev-
er and wrote,
Martin Luther in the Smalcald Articles wrote about
He consid-
ered making this a sacrament!
Today we need each other. Despite all the information, enter-
tainment and activities that surround us, we are lonely; we
have always been lonely. We need the moments when we are
connected to each other by the Christ who is within us!
Visitors to St. Stephen’s have a need to see us practicing
as the tools of the
faith are put into use on the “practice fields of the church”:
tools of listening, forgiving, encouraging, joy and laughter!
Your presence is a gift! Thank you for it.
You don’t have to take my word for it, take Jesus;
(Matthew 18:20)
Together we share in the meaning and blessings of life in
Christ.

We are on a Holy Experiment with our
worship service time. Just to review: no one
likes worshipping in a half empty sanctuary. We are experiencing
a national downward trend in worship attendance that began in 1952 and is continuing. We contin-
ue to experiment with ways to attract people to worship whether with the
Saturday night at or coming this fall the
.
We have worshipped at 9:30 in the summer for decades and we like seeing the fuller community
gathered. We have worshipped for the month of January at 9:30 and enjoyed that.
Our surveys reveal a wide majority favoring a single service on Sunday mornings. The question al-
ways becomes at what time? Again, 9:30 is favored by a wide majority. Everyone is in favor of the
single service, the only difference is when. For some, 30 minutes earlier was better. For others 30
minutes later was better. If you are one of those for whom the 30 minutes
makes a difference, we consider your attendance a gift, as all attendance is, but an extra special
one because it includes the gift of those 30 minutes.
H Experiment ly
Wednesday nights at St. Stephen’s are a time for us to gather for a meal, for faith formation, for
fellowship. As always, all are welcome to join us for our weekly Wednesday meal at 5:30pm.
This year we are adding a practice of
; we will worship at 6pm in the sanctuary those nights; come as you are and join us
in praising God! Watch the weekly announcements for more information about what’s happen-
ing on Wednesdays.
Due to scheduling of other events, there will be only one Adult Forum
event in September. On Pastor John will speak on the
subject of “ What does that mean? Is that a new Olympic
event or what? Could it be learning more about your faith? You’ll have to
join us in the lounge following the 9:30 service to find out the details. We
look forward to October when we will have FIVE FULL SUNDAYS of offerings for you.
Confirmation Classes for 6th
-8th
graders begin on September 7th.
Parents and students are
expected to arrive in the sanctuary at 6pm for our first class, where we will experience worship
together and then students will meet Confirmation teachers and visit our classrooms while
parents get oriented for this new school year. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor
Cassie.

Rooted in the Word VI: Luke & Revelations
Join us for a co-ed breakfast and discussion about. The food is great. The study is great. But
the greatest thing of all is being together as the Body of Christ!
Beginning with this meeting in This
book is rich with history, the circumstances of the early church, and visions and symbols. It’s
single, over arching theme is that God is in control, however it appears.
Whether you are a regular attendee at Rooted in the Word or curious and attending for the first
time, you are most welcome to this effort of St. Stephen’s, led by our pastors.
A guide book for Revelation is available for $5.
Hope to share this experience with you!
September 10 and 11 are God's work Our Hands. This is the
fourth annual ELCA-wide dedicated day of service. We will join
with our fellow Lutherans all across the country in serving the
communities in which we live. A variety of activities are planned
for Saturday after 5 pm and Sunday beginning at 10:30 am.
A group of people will bring treats to the local police and fire
departments to thank them for their service. We need dona-
tions of baked goods and fruit. This is an especially meaningful year to honor our first re-
sponders as this year's dedicated day of service will also mark the 15-year anniversary of the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the US.
We will be making sandwiches to give to the homeless. Donations of meat, cheese and bread
will be needed. Specific information about that will be coming soon.
We will be tying fleece blankets. Donations of fleece are welcome.
September 14 and 28
(2nd
and 4th
Wednesdays) 7-8:30 p.m.
This summer a group of members and nonmembers have gathered around the
book, “A Path With Heart: A Guide through the Perils and Promises of Spiritual
Life” by Jack Kornfield. The group has been led by Pastor John and retired Pastor
Gary Gestoos. The book and the group are so rich that we’ve decided to contin-
ue meeting into the fall. We have been progressing at two chapters a meeting. The discussion
is very fluid, focusing on what parts of the reading touched anyone. We also have 20 minutes of
silent prayer. You do not have to have the book nor been to any of the classes to benefit from
attending.

Minnesota we are grateful
that strangers have become

seemed alien have become

Children, Youth and Family Ministry
Summers always go by quickly in youth ministry. Camp in June, VBS and a summer trip in July, last
minute prep for the ministry fall kick off in August. Before you know it, it’s September. Camp Wap-
ogasset is always a highlight. Being able to stay the whole week with our kids gives a fresh perspec-
tive on how our kids do in a different environment. As they keep growing together, they will learn,
mature and develop their relationships with one another. I am always grateful for opportunities like
this where I can see them lead one another. My hope is that they keep maturing in such a positive
way.
Our high schoolers were active this summer. They had shared their hopes for this coming year. Eve-
ry year, TIM Team (high school program at Camp Wapogasset) challenges high schoolers to be in-
volved in the life of the congregation. Here are a few of the things they want to do this year:
1. Bring back Sunday morning youth group. In previous years they had a similar gathering and
called it S.M.A.C (Sunday Mornings at Church). Moving forward they renamed it to J.U.I.C.E.S
(Jesus Us in Church Every Sunday). This will be a time for high schoolers to just be together
and learn more about faith.
2. Lead an Adult vs. Students basketball game (I don’t think I need much explanation).
3. Bring back Hangtime. This will be every 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month for a time of fun
organized activities.
St. Stephen’s Update Newsletter ▪ September, 2016 Page 9
We are very excited to start a new year with you all! This year, our theme verse is Colossians 3:28,
chosen by our youth.
Come worship with us, as well as learn more about our upcoming year!
Everyone is welcome.
5:30pm, meal. 6:00pm, worship.
“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate
who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America –
one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.
As you continue to share God’s love with your neighbors,
whether it is preparing and delivering meals to people and
families rendered homeless or cleaning your neighborhood
parks, consider thanking and holding in prayer the
in your area as part of your service.
If you are in grades 7-12, come rule the gym at St. Stephen’s! There will
be organized games for everyone to enjoy. Time will be 6:30pm -
8:00pm. Bring friends!
We need chaperones for these events. Without the proper number of
adults, we will need to cancel the event.
This is going to be a heck of a Sunday. So much happening. There will
be a potluck as well as our Ministry Fair. If you are interested in learn-
ing more about the different ministries at St. Stephen’s, this is a per-
fect time to stop by. Keep a look-out on a sign up for the potluck.

for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Colossians 3:28, NIV

For I Know the Plans I Have For You ...
St. Stephen’s is blessed by our commitment to being connected. We are connected and connecting in many
ways. One of these ways is with our four lay visitors. These four individuals attempt to visit one of our homebound
members once a month for 30 minutes. The visits consist of a conversation, a prayer and sharing Holy Communion.
It is a privilege to help reassure people of their connection to God and to this congregation.
Times and needs change. We are always looking for additional “Connectors”. If you are interested please contact ei-
ther pastor. Your 30 minute visit serves to connect them to God, each other and the world! It’s quite a privilege.
Have you ever wondered what does
the Altar Guild volunteers do? These
folks are the ones responsible for
setting the altar every Saturday and
Sunday and a few other little tasks.
They work “behind the scenes”
making sure the altar and sacristy
areas are clean and set up for our
worship services.
We are in need of a few additional
volunteers to add to our volunteer
base.
As an experiment we are splitting
the weekend Altar Guild duties by
Saturday service work and Sunday
service work. Training is available. If
you are interested in joining the
Altar Guild volunteers or just have
questions, please contact Lori Ritt or
Mary Brunkow.
Remember the communion bread we
were using during Lent? We are,
also looking for volunteers to make
communion bread for the upcom-
ing season. We have a recipe which
we will distributed as requested. In
addition, we are also looking for a
separate volunteer to make a Gluten
-free option as well. Please contact
Lori Ritt if interested.

Join us on Sunday, September 18th
in the Fellowship Hall for our Ministry Fair. At the Ministry
Fair you will be able to learn about what different groups do at St. Stephen’s and out in the
community. Some highlights this year: our 2017 Trip to Guatemala; Faith Formation opportuni-
ties, and new opportunities to help with Worship services. At the same time, the tradition con-
tinues … we will be hosting our annual Basket Raffle to raise money for our Faith Formation
programs! Each year dozens of baskets are donated with themes ranging from baking to golf,
movie night to coffee lovers. Do you have a basket at home you could fill and bring in to
church? Please drop it off in the Narthex before Rally Day. Or here are some other ways you can
help make this year’s raffle a huge success:
Pick up a basket at church starting on September 4 to fill for the Rally Day Basket Raffle.
Bring any extra baskets you have at home so that others can take them home and fill them.
Come to Rally Day and buy your tickets for the raffle!
