Thankful. Photographers have the unique ability to capture moments in less than a minute that are never to be repeated. Think about the things taken for granted that we should be thankful for, such as the change in seasons, unless it is a season we want to be in; seeing children grow and learn; days turning into the night; changing environments and laws. We are always documenting with our cameras families, events, history, changes where we live, the humorous as well as the sad. Everybody loves a pretty sunrise or sunset and photographers often feel these are the best times to get a good photograph but what about what happens in between. As photographers, a minute is a long time to capture important moments and that is something to be thankful for. How many times have your photographs brought joy or thought to someone? In November, we have some exciting things going on. The November 2 field trip is to the Spocott Windmill & Village, the Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The competition theme is “Looking Up”, judged by Mary Braman and the How-To will be “Building Your Slideshow” lead by Vince Ferrari. Start thinking about the stories that you want to tell. November is also Native American Heritage Month. Did you know that Lacrosse was a variety of indigenous stickball games played by American Indians? It was an important part of the tribal community and spiritual life. The games lasted for days and as many as 100 people played on the team and it was played to give thanks to the Creator. How-To Meeting - November 25Building your Slideshow

by Vincent Ferrari

Every year in the spring, our club hosts its annual slideshow presentation. These shows are collections of photographs that are set to, and often synchronized with music. Any club member can create and present a show. It’s a great way to get your photographs seen, in an entertaining and enjoyable format.

Many of the folks who create shows every year have been doing it for a long time, and know the ins and outs. Other club members have never made one, but would like the opportunity to learn how it is done. This meeting will provide a great way for both newbies and

veterans to learn new techniques, as well as review the basics. We will look at creating shows with our preferred software tool, Photodex’s “Proshow”, as well as with other software platforms that can be used. A look at how to synchronize the show to your chosen music will be presented as well.

So come, learn, and hopefully you too will create your own show, either for the club’s presentation next May, or for your own purposes. Either way, you’ll walk away with a better understanding of the techniques involved.

Competition CornerOctober 7 Competition Results

by Roz Kleffman, VP Competition

The October 7, 2019 competition results are in. Big thanks to Tom Berault for judging our “Open” competition, the first competition of the club year 2019-2020. Kudos to all the novice print entrants. There were enough entries in both Monochrome and Color print categories to run full competitions. Thank you to everyone who used the print entry forms available on the web. These typed forms are

easier to read and result in better accuracy. A gentle reminder to everyone that titles do matter! Pick unique titles for your work. The computer software is really smart and often interprets similar titles as duplicates. Start thinking about the December 2nd competition – “Still Life” Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

December 2 Competiton JudgeOur judge for December’s “Still Life” competiton will be Marilyn Patterson

by Karen Ackermann, Competiton Assistant

Born the youngest of five French Canadian Cree Indian children, Marilyn Patterson was fortunate to have had a mother who valued dance, music, and travel, for it was traveling to foreign destinations that lit creativity in Marilyn’s soul. These excursions led her to begin photographing the world’s cultures and its environments, inspiring her to create World Impressions Photography, in which she combined photographic shows with speaking engagements for audiences interested in a particular culture or environment. The evening presentations included a discussion of her work and experiences, as well as culture-specific culinary dishes. As Marilyn’s work matured, she became attracted to other mediums of expression, notably watercolor, oil, and acrylic painting. Once thoroughly ensconced in these additional visual forms of communication, she

began Waterworks Art, LLC, to continue to explore and express her impressions of our natural world and the cultural condition. As a Pictorial Expressionist painter and photographer, Marilyn views her work as an aggressive form of problem solving. When composing, whether through a camera’s viewfinder or on canvas or paper, she continually makes decisions about what angle or perspective to use as well as which color, what light, and which medium is best to illustrate our environment and the human condition. Marilyn serves as secretary for the Baltimore Camera Club and is also a member of several art and watercolor societies. She has been a Maryland Photography Alliance Certified Photography Judge since 2018. Check out her website for photographs and paintings at: www.marilynlemayart.com

Holiday Pot-Luck DinnerJoin us on December 9 for great food and great holiday cheer

by Leslie Ferrari

This year the B-CCC Holiday Dinner will be a pot luck held on December 9. We’ll be reviewing the images from the competition of the previous week and enjoying a delectable dinner. The club will supply the

paper goods, utensils and water/coffee/tea. This will be a true pot luck, bring your favorite dish or culinary masterpiece and enjoy socializing with your fellow club members.

Program Meeting - November 18Don Rosenberger – Painting with Light

by Catherine Sheppard, VP Programs

Don Rosenberger is a well-known area photographer and acquainted with many of us, as he was the co-founder of Road Runner Photography Tours and over the years participated in many RRPT’s trips and events. Rosenberger now has gone off on his own to spend more time on his art and building his own brand. He also recently teamed up with Kelly Schneider Fine Art Portraiture as a tour manager on Schneider’s international portrait workshops. Lastly, Rosenberger also runs the Fairfax Photography Meetup group. There he organizes photo opportunities where participants of all skill levels can get together and explore new places, develop skills and meet other photographers.

For our November meeting, Rosenberger will discuss Light Painting, a technique that offers the artists a unique way in which to showcase their work. He will show the audience samples of his work in this area and describe his experience with this art form. Further, he will describe how to accomplish this style of photography, ranging from small workbench shots to large landscapes. This presentation also will cover what goes into a successful photograph as well as the processing options that can help realize one’s artistic vision.

Rosenberger’s body of work can be viewed at: www.donrosenberger.com

Out and AboutWhat B-CCC members are up to this month

by Vincent Ferrari, Editor

The exhibit for the third annual Maryland Photography Alliance award winners is now open at the Bohrer Park Activity Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Several of our club members won awards in this contest, so you can see their work at this exhibit. The show will be up until January 21, with an opening reception on Saturday, November 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Two B-CCC members, Warren Wilson and Vincent

Ferrari, each have photographs that were selected into the current juried exhibit at the Montpelier Arts Center, in Laurel, Maryland. The exhibit is titled “Reflections of Self”. Montpelier Arts Center is located at 9652 Muirkirk Road in Laurel. The show will be up until December 31, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, November 9, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Be sure to get out there and see how these two club members interpreted the theme.

November Field Trip - November 2Spocott Windmill & Village, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

by Bill Collins, Field Trip Leader

The three destinations for this field trip are all located in the Cambridge, Maryland vicinity. The Spocott Windmill and Village is located at 1663 Hudson Road, Cambridge, Maryland. With a step back to the 1800s, the site features Maryland’s only post-style windmill (notable for the way the entire structure can be rotated into the wind). Other buildings include a one-room schoolhouse, country store, mall home, and doctor’s office. The grounds and several of the buildings are open dawn to dusk daily for self-guided tours. The mill contains the original grinding stones and interior steps.

The Tubman Visitor Center, located at 4068 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, Maryland, is just to the east of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. It is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and admission is free. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center is located

amid the landscapes where Tubman lived and toiled. The Tubman Visitor Center features 10,000 square feet of engaging, enlightening multimedia exhibits about her life. It’s a great stop itself and a great launching point for exploring the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, a scenic, self-guided driving tour that includes 36 sites related to Tubman and the Underground Railroad on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday for an educational visit and small store. The Wildlife Drive and outdoor facilities are open daily, dawn to dusk. A daily permit is required for visitors to the Wildlife Drive. It may be possible to see many kinds of waterfowl as well as Bald Eagles. In the past, the club has stayed here for colorful sunsets.

December Field Trip - December 7Old Luckett’s Store, Vintage Flea Market and Design House (all at the same address)

by Beth Fabey, Field Trip Leader

Old Luckett’s Store, 42350 Lucketts Road, Leesburg, Virginia, is a 138 year-old restored general store that is home to over 35 vendors specializing in antiques and vintage finds. The Design House is a monthly interior design showcase bringing together the latest finds. The store, design house and exterior grounds will be all decked out for Christmas and the winter holidays. There should be many interesting, well-designed nostalgic vignettes both inside and outside to photograph. (Corey Hilz has held a photography workshop at this location.) Store hours are 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

www.luckettstore.com/

www.luckettstore.com/design-house/

Christmas photos: www.tinyurl.com/y6xkefr3

www.tinyurl.com/y5ns5y5z

Plan on arriving at 9:30 a.m., before the store opens in order to find parking and to photograph outside hopefully before the crowds arrive. Check out the Design House first to see if a line is already forming

as they only let a limited number of people inside at one time. We will meet in front of the Design House (not the store) at 9:45 a.m. Bring your wives/husbands/significant others, kids and grandkids to take your family photo for your holiday greeting card! (See the links above for some of the backdrops.) Tripods are permitted in Old Luckett’s Store as long as they don’t interfere with customers. Perhaps use it with the legs folded down to a “monopod”.

At 1:00 p.m., we will leave Luckett’s to make our way to lunch at Roots 657, approximately 0.8 mile away, at 42301 Spinks Ferry Road, Leesburg. Phone: 703-779-9657. Menu: www.roots657.com/

Please sign up on the field trip list of names to let me know that you plan on going and to let me know if you will be joining us for lunch so that I can have the correct number of people for the lunch reservation. Also sign up if you would like to carpool from the church parking lot, and note whether you would be willing to drive and how many.

This photo was taken at New Brunswick’s Old City Market, in Canada. It is the oldest continuously operating farmers’ market in Canada, with a charter dating from 1785, and is still a popular meeting place for local residents.

The market opened in 1875 and has a distinctive roof which mimics the shape of a ship’s hull..
