BEYOND THE WALLSW h a t H a p p e n s H e r e D o e s n ’ t S t a y H e r e

We’re now into our 5th month of abnormal, confusion and continued wonder of the future. Each day we carry on doing the business of the day amidst it all. We adhere to the rules as required, waiting for new changes to occur and then we switch gears mid flight to stay in line. All of this can be draining and really mentally challenging.

For example, we are a large Pastoral Team here at St. Pat-rick’s. Probably the largest in the Diocese of Hamilton and are very much like a family. We all have opinions, we all have different views, we all see things with different eyes, but at the end of the day we are a team and we always do what is best for the parish and all of it’s ministries, togeth-er as one. I’m sure many of you can relate.

As Catholics it is our mission to ensure we always follow the Works of Mercy, both Corporal and Spiritual. We feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the home-less, clothe the naked, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead. We also must instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, forgive offens-es, comfort the afflicted, bear wrongs ‘patiently’ and pray for the living and the dead. It is our duty to ensure we ‘practice what we preach’ every day and if we aren’t doing that, then we all need to gently remind ourselves of these teachings. The words of Pope Francis are a loving remind-er of that when he said “A bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just”. And he’s so right! Even when we are faced with the likeness of Covid-19.

Remember also our Virtues. Firstly, our Spiritual Virtues. Faith - the belief in the right things, including the vir-tues! Hope – is taking a positive future view, that good will prevail, Charity – is concern for and active helping of others. Secondly our Natural Virtues. Fortitude – is never giving up. Justice – is being fair and equitable with others. Prudence - is care of and moderation with money. And Temperance – is moderation of needed things and absti-

nence from things which are not needed. The Theological Virtues, Love, Hope and Faith as defined by St. Paul, who placed Love as the greatest of them all.

When we forget all of these teachings, most of us taught them from an early age, then again, we need to remind ourselves of why we are here. Jesus gives us so many op-portunities to get things right. When we ask for forgive-ness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, He grants us peace in our heart and blesses us with forgiveness!

The pandemic has affected so many of us in a thousand different ways, both physically and mentally and it’s so easy to become fragmented. The only way to get through this as individuals, as families, as a parish community is to band together from a ‘two meter’ distance and remember why we’re here, ever knowing that no matter what chal-lenges we face daily, we will get through this together. Thanks be to God!

DONATIONS TO ST. PATRICK CHURCH AND DE MAZENOD DOOR OUTREACH

It seems like everyone is asking for your money these days, and for good reason. This Covid-19 pandemic has flipped the lives of everyone and everything up-side down and inside out. The fact remains for all of us however, that bills still need to be paid, and that in-cludes our bills at St. Patrick.

If you are able to still support St. Patrick, (and we completely understand many will not be able to at this time), here are the ways you can do it:

CanadaHelps - on our website, stpatrickshamilton.ca, at the “donate” button. Below is the drop down menu you will find when you go to CanadaHelps on the website:

• General• St. Patrick Heritage Fund• St. Patrick Window Campaign• Beyond the Walls” Renovation• De Mazenod Door Outreach - General• De Mazenod Door Outreach - Mission with Youth• De Mazenod Door Outreach - Friday Barbeque

Other ways to donate are:• Pre-Authorized Giving• Etransfer - [email protected]• Mail - 20 Emerald Street South, Hamilton, L8N 2V2• Mail Box - 440 King Street East (mail slot to the right of the De Mazenod Door Outreach door or 20 Emer-

We are grateful to everyone that has been able to donate to St. Patrick. THANK YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIANA!!!This past week, Diana Quildon, our volunteer co-ordinator celebrated her birthday. On be-half of our staff and parish I want to take this opportunity to wish her a new year filled with the best gifts that God has to offer her. Di-ana is a hard working lady who keeps all our schedules updated. She also assures that all our volunteers are properly documented and screened! We are blessed to have her on our team.

BANANAS

We thank everyone for their prayers, time, talents

and treasures!

We have been absolutely blessed at De Mazenod Door Outreach by the many, many volunteers (individuals, groups and families) who have chosen to give us their pre-cious time during the past several unpredictable months. They show up day after day ready and willing to do what-ever is necessary to help our brothers and sisters in Christ.

During these unparalleled times, come extraordinary hu-man beings wanting to do all they can… and then some.

One of these individuals is Dave Harper. Dave does many things behind the scenes, arriving at the Door at 7:00 AM, long before others arrive. We recently received a donation of nearly 900 fresh eggs, so just one example of his back-stage duties over the last two weeks since receiving them has been spent coming in extra early to cook them. Each day Dave would come in to prepare hundreds of ‘eggs in a basket’. Beautiful fresh eggs baked in a bread and cheese lined muffin tin, so that our guests coming for breakfast could have a very healthy and nourishing start to their day. A huge shout out of thanks and appreciation for all that you do for De Mazenod Door Outreach. It never goes un-noticed and is always so appreciated. Thank you Dave!

This week I want to call your attention to just one word—Compassion as we reflect on the passage of St. Mathew.

The Latin root of compassion literally means “to suffer with.” Compassion is the ability to feel along with anoth-er person, the willingness to sympathize with the pain of one’s fellow humans. More than that, compassion is the pity that stirs one to act in order to help those who suffer.

The Bible often tells us that God is compassionate, but in the person of Jesus it shows us. Jesus’ whole ministry could be summed up in this one word ‘compassion’. He felt compassion toward those who suffered physically. Listen to these excerpts from the gospels: “Moved with pity he stretched out his hand and touched him” (speak-ing of a leper, Mark 1:41). “Jesus in pity touched their eyes” (of two blind men outside Jericho, Matthew 20:34). “He had compassion on [the crowds] . . . and he healed their sick” (Matthew 14:14). Jesus also felt compassion for people who were suffering emotional distress. At the gates of Nain Jesus saw a widow carrying her only son to bury him. “When the Lord saw her he had compassion for her” (Luke 7:13), and Jesus restored the woman’s son to life.

Jesus not only showed empathy, but most importantly it stirred him to act upon or we can say in other words “Jesus’ heart went out to them. Jesus’ compassion heals the leper, gives sight to the blind and raises the dead

son. St. Eugene as a young priest appalled by the poor conditions of the church in southern France did have this same spirit of compassion towards the poor. His compel-ling love for Christ and compassion for the poor forced him to gather a small group of priests to serve the poor, marginalized and neglected in the society. His visit to the poor on the streets of Aix- en-Provence, caring for the sick, helping the poor widows, visit to the prisoners are explicit signs of his compassionate and tender heart.

As oblates, we are called to nurture this spirituality of compassion in our communities, missions, and in minis-tries. Like Jesus who not only fed the hungry crowd but also invited his disciples to take part in feeding them, we too, as oblates, have to invite others to be part of this spirituality of compassion and of our charism ‘preaching the good news to the poor.’ St. Eugene exemplifies what Pope Francis, describes in “Evangelii Gaudium, (120) as missionary Disciples of Christ Jesus.

Pope Francis said, “The Lord goes out to meet the needs of men and women and wants to make each one of us concretely share in his compassion,”. May the words of Pope Francis remind us that we need to go out “to the periphery” and find the most abandoned by our society, and like Jesus and his disciples make conscious efforts to concretely share in his compassion by our deeds.

Karen Ford:Karen is con-tinuing her re-covery at her home after a stroke. She had surgery to un-block the artery in her neck. She is working with Brittany Van-Fleet, who is as-sisting with rehab. This past week she was able to get out for a few hours to visit friends and enjoy some sunshine. She wish to express her gratitude for the many expressions of kindness and prayers sent her way.

Pastoral Team OffsiteOur pastoral team will be going offsite during August 13th & 14, to evaluate where we are as a parish and team, and to put into place plans for the upcoming year. We anticipate there will be much to discuss and new direc-tions for our ministry, given

the new normal we are experiencing. Please pray for us, as we turn to the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us towards God’s desire for our parish and the people we are called to minister to and with. Fr. Jarek has gra-ciously agreed to facilitate our days. Thank you!
