CHAPTER 3

Jesus tells Nicodemus that men must be born again—God so loved the world that He sent His Only Begotten Son to save men—John the Baptist testifies that he that believes on the Son has everlasting life.

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:2 The same came to Jesus by

night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.3 Jesus answered and said unto

him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born bagain, he cannot see the kingdom of God.4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How

can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into

his mother’s womb, and be born?5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I

say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot denter into the kingdom of God.6 That which is born of the flesh is

flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.7 Marvel not that I said unto thee,

Ye must be born again.8 The wind bloweth where it

listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.9 Nicodemus answered and said

unto him, How can these things be?10 Jesus answered and said unto

him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.12 If I have told you earthly

things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? should go ye will not depart from it.6 Wherefore, if ye are a cursed,

behold, I leave my blessing upon you, that the cursing may be taken from you and be answered upon the heads of your parents.7 Wherefore, because of my

blessing the Lord God will a not suffer that ye shall perish;

JOHN 3:1-7wherefore, he will be merciful unto you and unto your seed forever.8 And it came to pass that after my

father had made an end of speaking to the sons and daughters of Laman, he caused the sons and daughters of Lemuel to be brought before him.9 And he spake unto them, saying:

63Behold, my sons and my daughters, who are the sons and the daughters of my second son; behold I leave unto you the same blessing which I left unto the sons and daughters of Laman; wherefore, thou shalt not utterly be destroyed; but in the end thy seed shall be blessed.10 And it came to pass that when

my father had made an end of speaking unto them, behold, he spake unto the sons of Ishmael, yea, and even all his household.11 And after he had made an end

of speaking unto them, he spake unto Sam, saying: Blessed art thou, and thy a seed; for thou shalt inherit the land like unto thy brother Nephi. And thy seed shall be numbered with his seed; and thou shalt be even like unto thy brother, and thy seed like unto his seed; and thou shalt be blessed in all thy days.12 And it came to pass after my

father, Lehi, had a spoken unto all his household, according to the feelings of his heart and the Spirit of the Lord which was in him, he

waxed old. And it came to pass that he died, and was buried.13 And it came to pass that not

many days after his death, Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael were angry with me because of the admonitions of the Lord.14 For I, Nephi, was constrained

to speak unto them, according to his word; for I had spoken many things unto them, and also my father, before his death; many of which sayings are written upon mine a other plates; for a more history part are written upon mine other plates.15 And upon a these I write the

things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul c delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart d pondereth them, and writeth them for the e learning and the profit of my children.

16 Behold, my a soul delighteth in the things of the Lord; and my b heart pondereth continually upon the things which I have seen and heard.

17 Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great a goodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O b wretched man that I am! Yea, my heart c sorroweth

him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born bagain, he cannot see the kingdom of God.4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How

can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into

his mother’s womb, and be born?5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I

say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot denter into the kingdom of God.6 That which is born of the flesh is

flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.7 Marvel not that I said unto thee,

We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.12 If I have told you earthly

things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? should go ye will not depart from it.6 Wherefore, if ye are a cursed,

behold, I leave my blessing upon you, that the cursing may be taken from you and be answered upon the heads of your parents.7 Wherefore, because of my

him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the apassover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the cmiracles which he did.24 But Jesus did not acommit

himself unto them, because he knew all men,25 And needed not that any should
