Presidents Message

Dear Members,

The exam season is coming to an end or may have ended and the holidays have begun or will begin shortly. It’s vacation time and I’m sure all the children are looking forward to it. Parents too must also be looking forward to the Summer ahead. Hopefully the weather will not be a spoilsport and everyone can look forward to a pleasant Summer.

The Lenten season will also be over soon and we will celebrate Easter doing many events at the Club. The details of the events for the month are in the pages that follow. The main event is the “UB40” show scheduled for 21st April. The Band will arrive from the UK and perform in Bangalore exclusively at Catholic Club. We can look forward to some great music from a internationally renowed group. We request Members to buy tickets in advance to avoid disappointment as we have limited tickets. To ensure as many Members as possible have the opportunity to enjoy this show, I wish to inform Members that there will be no seating available in the quadrangle. Seating will be limited and only available on the St. Thomas Building deck and on 1st & 2nd floor verandas.

I would like to apologise to the Members of the Club for the delay in completion of the heated Swimming Pool and the Badminton Courts. In my communication to Members last month, I had stated that we would be having the Swimming Pool ready by the middle of March. It is now scheduled to be operational by 15th April. I regret the delay and take full responsibility for the same. I thank you for your patience.

The Club is now ready to launch its new Internet Services for the benfit of the Members. We have upgraded our Wireless network and seamless Wi-Fi Internet Access will be available to Members on their various wireless devices like smart phones, notepads

and notebooks. These services will be available at no cost to the Member for any one registered device. Members will be charged a nominal fee of Rs. 300 per annum per device for every additional device and will be allowed a maximum of 3 devices per Member to be registered. All registered devices will connect seamlessly to the Club’s wifi network on entry into the club. I request all Members who need this service to register with the club’s office after completing the formalities.

We are in the process of finalizing a few International affliations to benefit our travelling Members. The details of this will be available on the website and on the notice Board shortly.

On behalf of the Staff and the Managing Committee, I wish all Members and their families a very Happy Easter.

I also look forward to some April showers.

Reimagine Don Quixote in contemporary India!

Lalgudi Iyer - Ryan Lobo’s protagonist in his book “Mr Iyer goes to War” is interred by his family in a home in Varanasi. After an accident which leaves him concussed, he believes he is the mythological warrior Bhima and sets out to cleanse the world of all evil.

Lobo’s depth of knowledge about the Holy River runs through the entire book and his prose is distinctly

21st century Indian. Endangered Gangetic dolphins, catfish that devour unburnt human remains, rain quail that rise from the reeds, Lobo has added these personal inputs, from the vantage point of an environmental film - maker, that he also is.

Surprisingly with the world being so touchy about religion and especially if quoted by a ‘non-believer’, Lobo has sailed happily above any nasty reviews about his story line, which in itself is worthy of applause.

As one of his reviewers said, “Lobo may have taken inspiration from the greats, but he has created something brilliant in his own right.” (Carrie Callaghan, Washington independent review of books) His sales have hit 5000 books, which makes it a best- seller in India.

When choosing a book to buy, Lobo shared that he checks out page 99 and if it passes muster, he buys the book. An interesting aside of the event, for all book lovers!

A copy of the book has been gifted to the Library, but since there are many who would like to read it, buying your own copy too, is an option from Bookworm.

The KGA who jointly sponsored the event brought in enticing hors d’oeuvres and a mocktail which was enjoyed by a packed and interactive audience.

On the 6th of April 2017, we have Praveen Thimmaiah and her book, “ The Myriad Colours of Life.” Block the date right away on your calendar.

We are taking a vacation in May, with no iBrowse event slated for the holiday month. On June 9th we will be hosting the launch of the St. Patrick’s Coffee Table Book put together by a team of professionals, as part of its 175th year celebration.

Congratulations to Marie Padival on being selected to play at the over 50 Badminton World Championships. ‘When the going gets tough, I get going’ The surge of excitement to play at the National Level is something difficult to pen in words, challenges bring out the killer instincts in me and the drive to win is unmatched by anything else... Having been victorious in the mixed doubles event, the icing on the cake is definitely the opportunity to play at the World Championships in September.

TestimonyAfter two kids, I gradually gained weight and with my

job and stuff to manage at home, I couldn’t manage

to get a decent workout plan. That’s when I decided

to try out the Catholic Club Gym after work for about

six months. It was a revelation!

From the start, Wayne understood what I was looking

for. He continuously guided and motivated me and I

could see the results immediately. Plus the atmosphere

of the Gym is very refreshing after a long day of

work, a real stress buster. The camaraderie shared at

the Gym along with the music being played and the

quality of the equipment made it a weekday routine!

I cannot imagine a day when I cannot spend time at

the Gym. On the days I am forced to miss because of

another commitment, I feel miserable.

While I started seeing the results in just a month, it

has only got better from there! In just seven months

(where I lost eight kgs), the changes are remarkable.

While I still have some more steps to go before I reach

my target weight, the fitness already makes me feel

great and the compliments I get from people I know

make it worthwhile!

A big thanks to Wayne, his guidance and motivation

that helped get to this stage. Without his advice, it

would’ve been very difficult. But he made it look so

easy! And thanks to the great CC Gym too!
