SHELTERBOX
Following my previous message to the Clubs of D9780 on 9th April 2010 I would advise that
David Langworthy, the Chair of ShelterBox Australia (SBA), has contacted by telephone all of
the Australian District Governors to confirm that SBA will comply with the terms of disengage-
ment with ShelterBox Trust UK (SBTUK) as their Australian affiliate.
He has advised that all funds withheld since 1st February 2010 by SBA will be remitted to
SBTUK, less the agreed 10% for administrative management expenses. It is expected that this
transfer of funds will be completed by the end of April.
David also advised that SBA (a company limited by guarantee) will change its name and will be
supported by the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills as a Club Disaster Relief project within District
9820. They intend to promote a range of shelter and survival products that can be sourced and
dispatched from Australia.
The new project will apply to transfer the use of the ATO DGR and AusAid status that was
granted to SBA and the new project will not include “shelter” or “box “in its title.
Clubs and individuals can still elect to donate funds to ShelterBox direct to SBTUK. I have been
advised that RAWCS have extended tax deductibility for three months for donations forwarded
directly to SBTUK .This arrangement has been extended until more information is available on
still being investigated.
For those Clubs and individuals who wish to donate to ShelterBox direct I can provide the three
methods of forwarding funds as previously advised by SBTUK.
I was advised on 25 April 2010 that SBTUK has set up a new Australian affiliate (ShelterBox in
Australia or SBIA), the new structure being a company limited by Guarantee similar to the previ-
ous SBA. At this stage there have been a number of questions raised relating to the composition
of the Board and various administrative issues that will be need to be addressed. When I have the
answers to these questions I will advise you accordingly.
My suggestion to the Clubs would be that they await further developments and hold any funds
they may have received as being designated for ShelterBox.
POLIO ERADICATION
I also wish to bring to your attention information being distributed to Clubs regarding the
“Schools Ending Polio” campaign to be conducted by primary and secondary schools across
Australia.
I urge all Rotary Clubs in District 9780 to participate in this campaign which will raise funds for
Polio eradication as well as raising the awareness of Rotary . With the potential involvement of 4
million school children across Australia this campaign has the capacity to raise substantial funds
to “End Polio Now”
As always, please remember “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”

CLARIFICATION ON PHF MATTERS
RA's versus FRP's
Rotarians who have been recognised as Paul Harris Fellows by their clubs together with
those who make regular contributions to The Rotary Foundation as Centurions and Sus-
taining Members and who have access to the Club Recognition Summary (available
through their President/Secretary) may have noticed that they have two monetry amounts
shown against their name.
The first is under Recognition Amount and is the total of contributions lodged in their
name either personally and/or by their club. The next column may show PHF (or PHF+1
etc) against their name irrespective of whether or not they have actually been presented
with the certificate and regalia.
The third last column is headed Foundation Recognition Points and shows any
amount lodged in their name after receiving their PHF. It is often less than multiples of
$1,000 subtracted from the Recognition Amount and only becomes important when
someone requests a Sapphire and wishes to name an additional PHF.
It is also important to note that points transferred from a club or another individual
count towards Recognition Amounts but do not add to the amount of Foundation Recog-
nition Points.
Where is the Medallion?
Clubs and individuals requesting a Paul Harris Recognition now only receive a certifi-
cate in a folder and a lapel badge because The Rotary Foundation has found it necessary
to charge for the cost of supplying the medallion on a ribbon.
Those requesting a medallion need a send a separate cheque to cover its cost of
US$15. At the current exchange rate of 1:1.10, this comes to $AU$16.50 and with GST
added, becomes AU$18.15.
This amount cannot be taken from credits clubs may already have with The Rotary
Foundation.
Cheques for this amount must be made out to Rotary International and attached to appli-
cations for Recognitions from clubs whereas cheques from individuals applying for Rec-
ognitions are to be made out to The Rotary Foundation.
Requests for additional information can be forwarded to [email protected]

BRIGHT YOUNG ACADEMIC AWARDED FUNDING PARTNER PhD SCHOLARSHIP
Remember this name - Kevin Jia-Jin Loo. You may not have heard of Kevin ... yet! However, if his academic record is any-
thing to go by this brilliant young Australian could well become a researcher of re-
nown.
Born in 1989 in Bathurst, NSW, to Malaysian-Chinese parents Kevin moved to Wollongong to start kindergar-
ten in 1995. His father worked at the University of Wollongong as senior lecturer in the Graduate School of
Journalism, so Kevin was exposed to the University environment and academic life from an early age.
Kevin was admitted into an accelerated learning program in infants and primary school. In 1999 he was accel-
erated from Year 3 to Year 5. The 10 year old was then accelerated to Year 7 in 2000 after achieving equal
first in a state-wide „Gifted Education Research Resource and Information Centre‟ test.
At 16 Kevin completed high school. His keen interest in science and mathematics led to his acceptance into the
advanced honours program in Medical and Radiation Physics at the University of Wollongong. He completed his honours thesis with
high distinction in 2009. This year, aged 20, he commenced his PhD as an Australian Rotary Health/District 9690 Funding Partner
Scholar.
Kevin‟s PhD studies will focus on improved brachytherapy treatment for prostate cancer, one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers
in men over 55. His PhD will take 3½ years to complete; by which time Kevin Loo will be 24. Australian Rotary Health is proud to be
supporting Kevin‟s research and we anticipate a brilliant future ahead for this impressive young Australian. Stay tuned!
Your financial support makes it possible to fund scholarships for young people like Kevin.

BOWELSCAN – the Program for May 2010.
The BOWELSCAN program in District 9780 is now ell advanced for May 2010. All Clubs have been circulated and problems caused by
failure to notify us of change or absence on holidays of the club‟s representative have almost been resolved.
We are also assisting many Clubs in other Districts in Victoria with their program and a number have approached us to be involved for
the first time. In those other Districts where there is already an organised program then we are once again providing testing services for
their kits.
We are currently on reaching about 10% of our target population but we are confident that with an increase in promotion and advertis-
ing, particularly with television advertisements in country areas, that we can increase public participation. We need EVERY Rotarian
over 40 years of age to not only promote this valuable Bowel Cancer Awareness program but to also take an active role by buying the
simple-to-use kits for themselves, their family, their friends and their work colleagues. Why not offer a free test kit to every staff mem-
ber (and spouse) over 40 years of age? Wouldn‟t this be much more productive than having to employ and train a replacement?
There have been regular instances over the years of Rotarians who have supported this District Project but failed to participate in the
testing program themselves and, subsequently, been diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer. If they had participated in the BowelScan
Program then they might have been treated early enough to be part of the 90% of bowel cancer patients that can be cured.
If you need any information please talk to your Club representative or phone our BowelScan Information Line 1300 779 694.
