“Good St. Joseph, Pray For Us” St. Joseph Red Lake Falls St. Joseph Brooks CREDO: A New Evangelization Witness By Fr. Bob Schreiner I want to discuss the idea of ‘Spiritual Communion.’ You’ll find a more detailed article on the topic as a bulletin insert written by Abbot Kodell. The Church can speak of three types of Eucharistic Communion. The highest and most grace-filled, of course, is the worthy reception of the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Everyone should orient their discipleship during the week to the Worship of God at Holy Mass and the worthy recep- tion of the Body and Blood of Christ at that Mass. “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you shall not have life within you.” (John 6:53) Nothing can replace this Sacramental Encounter within the spiritual life. Nor should anyone desire to replace it, since it is a fundamental moral obligation of every Catholic to Worship at Mass every Sunday/weekend. Similar to this but quite rare in the spiritual life is the experience of “mystical commun- ion.” This usually is reserved to the great mystics and saints as they abide in a deep mystical contemplation. Essentially it is the reception of Christ’s body and blood from the hands of heavenly beings most often angels. One example is the mystical communion received from the hands of the Angel of Peace to the three children of Fatima the year before our Blessed Mother began to appear to them. St. Catherine of Siena, St. John the Evangelist, St. Padre Pio and others have also experienced this great , mystical grace. The third type of Eucharistic Communion is available to any of the baptized Catholics who yearn to receive Christ Sacramentally but are for whatever reason incapable of doing so. This is called making a “Spiritual Communion.” Common reasons to seek a ‘Spiritual Communion’ are: physical inability to get to Mass or have Holy Communion brought; or illness making one incapable of swallowing the Real Presence as Holy Communion, etc. Though this form of Communion cannot effect the Sacramental grace of true Eucharistic Communion it none the less brings grace to that soul that yearns to receive Him in his body and blood. All one needs do to receive the grace of a Spiritual Communion is to acknowledge the desire for the reception of a Eucharistic Communion and then make a prayer of communion flowing from that desire. There is no official prayer to say. One can formulate one’s own prayer. But there are many examples of them in the life of the Church one could use. One example within the tradition often recited is as follows: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You Sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.” For more information and history I now refer you to the article insert by Abbott Ko- dell which is reprinted with permission from the Diocese of Little Rock for your edifi- cation. Fr. By Fr. Bob Schreiner

I want to discuss the idea of ‘Spiritual Communion.’ You’ll find a more detailed article

on the topic as a bulletin insert written by Abbot Kodell.

The Church can speak of three types of Eucharistic Communion. The highest and most

grace-filled, of course, is the worthy reception of the Real Presence of the Body and

Blood of Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Everyone should orient their

discipleship during the week to the Worship of God at Holy Mass and the worthy recep-

tion of the Body and Blood of Christ at that Mass. “Unless you eat my flesh and drink

my blood, you shall not have life within you.” (John 6:53) Nothing can replace this

Sacramental Encounter within the spiritual life. Nor should anyone desire to replace it,

since it is a fundamental moral obligation of every Catholic to Worship at Mass every

Sunday/weekend.

Similar to this but quite rare in the spiritual life is the experience of “mystical commun-

ion.” This usually is reserved to the great mystics and saints as they abide in a deep

mystical contemplation. Essentially – it is the reception of Christ’s body and blood

from the hands of heavenly beings – most often angels. One example is the mystical

communion received from the hands of the Angel of Peace to the three children of

Fatima the year before our Blessed Mother began to appear to them. St. Catherine of

Siena, St. John the Evangelist, St. Padre Pio and others have also experienced this

great , mystical grace.

The third type of Eucharistic Communion is available to any of the baptized Catholics

who yearn to receive Christ Sacramentally but are – for whatever reason – incapable of

doing so. This is called making a “Spiritual Communion.” Common reasons to seek a

‘Spiritual Communion’ are: physical inability to get to Mass or have Holy Communion

brought; or illness making one incapable of swallowing the Real Presence as Holy

Communion, etc. Though this form of Communion cannot effect the Sacramental

grace of true Eucharistic Communion – it none the less brings grace to that soul that

yearns to receive Him in his body and blood. All one needs do to receive the grace of a

Spiritual Communion is to acknowledge the desire for the reception of a Eucharistic

Communion and then make a prayer of communion flowing from that desire. There is

no official prayer to say. One can formulate one’s own prayer. But there are many

examples of them in the life of the Church one could use.

One example within the tradition often recited is as follows: “My Jesus, I believe that

You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire

to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You Sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

For more information and history – I now refer you to the article insert by Abbott Ko-

dell which is reprinted with permission from the Diocese of Little Rock for your edifi-

cation. Fr. Bob

MASS SWITCH: Beginning in September I’m going to switch my day off to Tuesdays instead of Mondays. That means that beginning in September I will have Mass on Monday mornings and not on Tuesday mornings in RLF. Most priests do take off Mondays. But I’ve never liked it. There are a lot of things that need attention on Mondays since it’s the beginning of the work week. Additionally, we have regular meetings sched-uled for Mondays…etc, etc. The bulk of my priesthood I’ve had Thursdays as my day off – but that won’t fit the rhythm here either. So – Tuesdays it is. Mass to kick of the work week on Mondays. Then the day off on Tuesdays. I hope that’s not too disruptive for folks…I do apologize if it is. Blessings! Fr. Bob

NEED A RETREAT? What a great time of year to take care of your spiri-tual health! Many in our parish have attended Cursillo weekends over the years and give great testimony to the power of such weekends. Cursillo is pronounced KER-SEE-O meaning - short course in Christianity. Weekends are being offered this fall and next spring at Sand Hill Bible Camp, just south of Fosston. The weekends include quiet time, inspirational talks, and most importantly, time to be with Jesus without the many distractions of daily life. Grow closer to Jesus by taking the time to join us. HE will bless your sacrifice of time for HIM. The weekend starts Thursday evening and ends Sunday afternoon.

The Men's will be held September 28 - October 1. The Women's will be October 26-29. If these dates do not work into your schedule there will also be weekends available next spring. The Men's will be held February 22-25, 2018 and the Women's will be March 15-18, 2018. Contact Carol Olsonawski (218-689-9081) or Bobbi Mercil (701-866-5706) for more information. Applications can be printed at crookstoncur-sillo.weebly.com or picked up at your parish office.
