“She cried tears of relief when she was able to take a full-size bottle of shampoo and a regular size bar of soap from our food pantry hygiene shelves. She shared, in between tears, that she’d had a phone call from school. Her kids had been bullied because of their greasy hair. ‘Do you know what it’s like to listen and know you can’t help?’, she asked me. When she left, she was smiling, clutching the soap and shampoo. Now, with our help, she could help her kids.” – Salvation Army, Fond du Lac

The Family’s 27th annual “Help for the Homeless” hygiene drive’s collection boxes were hosted by more than 900 businesses, churches, and schools in 15 Northeast and Central Wisconsin communities this spring. Thanks to everyone who filled them with $406,000 worth of relief and answered prayer for your neighbors in need! The supplies stay in the communities where donated – helping 89 crisis programs in our listening areas. Every bar of soap, package of diapers, roll of toilet paper, and bottle of shampoo makes a difference! Thank you!

Conflict is hard, but it doesn’t have to destroy our relationships. Healthy conflict can be a doorway to deeper marital intimacy. It can facilitate communication, understanding, trust and respect if we choose to manage our differences and disagreements in nourishing ways. Healthy conflict is a way to discover your spouse’s most important feelings and needs.

When was the last time you were able to have a productive, Christ-like conversation… in the middle of an argument with your spouse? That doesn’t happen, right? In the middle of a fight, when we’re frustrated, hurt or upset, our heart can close. When your heart is closed, you’re likely to react in unloving ways.

So, how do we move from unhealthy conflict to healthy conflict?Instead of trying to force our way through a conversation, do what Jesus himself recommended: “First take the log out of your own eye…” (Matthew 7:5). Instead of simply reacting, thoughtfully respond to your spouse in a productive, Christ-like way.

Here’s how to open your heart and “fight” your way to a better marriage… and agree to try applying these tools before the next conflict arises.

Call a timeout: Separate for a brief time to allow your emotions to settle. Tell your spouse that you will be back to talk when your heart is open… and follow through.Name what you are feeling: “I feel . . . unloved, disrespected, worthless, controlled, unimportant, etc.” Do this during your timeout and notice how it calms you. Pray: Ask God to reveal what is true about your feelings and what is true about your spouse.Re-Unite: Come back together now that you have had time to pray and process your feelings. Tapping into the power of healthy conflict is a matter of opening the door to your heart.

Growing Closer Through Healthy ConflictFrom Focus on the Family, Written by Greg Smalley “When she told me that she had

lost her feelings for me, I knew that I had to find out why and how. As she shared her heart about moving from bitterness to numbness, I felt a strong nudge from the Holy Spirit, that said, ‘Shut up and listen.’”

On their 10th anniversary, Dave and Ann Wilson realized that to save their marriage they had to shift the focus to from

themselves to God. Now, after 38 years of marriage, Dave and Ann’s relationship is as strong as ever, and they are working to help other couples as the new hosts of FamilyLife Today®. Dave and Ann have worked to keep their relationship with Christ at the center of their marriage. Dave reminds others that “None of this (marriage) is possible apart from Jesus. We do not have the power to resolve or forgive when it gets tough. Jesus does. When we surrender everything to Him and go vertical, He gives us His power to resolve and forgive in a way that brings honor and glory back to Himself.” From Family Life Today
