What Should a 4 Year Old Know? Brook Kaufman, Pre K Teacher

This article caught my attention, not only because I teach 4 year olds, but because I also have a 4 year old daughter! I found the contents of this article very powerful and couldn’t wait to share them with my co-workers and friends with children of the same age. I have included a few points from the article. If you wish to view the article in its entirety it is called, What Should a 4 Year Old Know? Magical Childhood.

Most parents focus on academics when they think about what their 4 year old should know. It’s very important to know that all kids will develop at their own pace. In the meantime, there are many other things they should know.

1. She should know she is loved wholly and unconditionally, all of the time.2. He should know that he is safe and he should know how to keep himself safe in public.3. She should know how to laugh, act silly, be goofy and use her imagination. She should know that it is

always okay to paint the sky orange and give cats 6 legs.4. He should know his own interests and be encouraged to follow them. If he couldn’t care less about

learning his numbers, his parents should realize he’ll learn them accidentally soon enough. Let himimmerse himself instead in rocket ships, drawing, dinosaurs or playing in the mud.

5. She should know that the world is magical and so is she. She should know that it’s just as worthy tospend the day outside making daisy chains, mud pies, and fairy houses as it is to practice phonics.

More importantly here’s what parents should know.1. That a child learns to walk, talk, read and do algebra at his own pace and that it will have no bearing on

how well he walks, talks, reads or does algebra.2. That the single biggest predictor of high academic achievement and high ACT scores is reading to

children.3. That being the smartest or most accomplished kid in class has never had any bearing on being the

happiest.4. That our children deserve to be surrounded by books, nature, art supplies and the freedom to explore

them.5. That our children need more of us. They need fathers who sit and listen to their days, mothers who join

in and make crafts with them, parents who take the time to read stories and act silly with them. Theydeserve to know that they’re a priority for us and that we truly love to be with them.

Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people 10 to 34 years of age?

The month of September is Suicide Prevention Month. As a school, I hope to have a continued dialoge to raise awareness and reduce suicide ideation in our school. I also will be inviting students and staff to wear yellow on September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day.

Some risk factors for suicide include: • Struggling with a mental illness• History of trauma or abuse• Family history of suicide • Previous suicide attempts• Interpersonal relationship stress including loss of a relationship or death of a loved one• Stigma associated with seeking help

Some but not all warning signs include:• Talking about suicide or wanting to die• Talking about feeling worthless and/or hopeless• Displaying mood swings• Withdrawing• Increased substance use.

To let you all know that you are not alone, I wanted to introduce myself! My name is Ms. McDowell and I am the Social Worker for the Jesup Community School District. Some of my roles may include meeting with students to provide counseling on an as needed or on-going basis, help students succeed in school by assessing barriers and challenges, providing resources to parents to help their child in school, provide staff training, and raise awareness of imperative subjects including mental health, bullying, and substance use. I will be here to support students, teachers, and families so feel free to reach out to me! Other ways to get help include calling/texting the National Suicide Prevention Line or reaching out to a trusted friend or adult.

• National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 • Text/chat suicidepreventionlifeline.org • Iowa Helpline: 855-800-1239• Foundation 2 Crisis Line: 319-362-2174

October Newsletter

My name is Andrea Fettkether and this is my second year teaching at Jesup Middle School. I had taught at Waterloo Schools for the last 12 years before joining Jesup Middle. I will be teaching 6th grade Science and 8th grade Math.

My husband and I have lived in Jesup for 5 years and have 4 children who all attend school. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading and watching sports. (Go Cubs!)

In 6th grade science we will cover many topics. We have talked about the engineering method and did our own tests on how to preserve a banana for a week. We are currently learning about matter and how it interacts. We have talked about what elements are and how mixtures and compounds differ. We created our own models of atoms and looked at some of the elements on the periodic table. Our next unit will be on the different systems in the body.

In 8th grade math we start off the year with our geometry unit. We will look at solving systems of equations, linear relationships, exponents and scientific notation as well as the pythagorean theorem.

I look forward to having a great year at Jesup Middle School and am glad to be a part of the JHawk family!

FOOD BAGS* FOOD BAGS*FOOD BAGS*FOOD BAGS*FOOD BAGS

Could you use some extra food for the weekend?

Would you like us to send home a food bag with your

child?

If YES---then this program could be for you!

BackPack Program 2020-2021Dear Parents/Guardians,

Jesup Community Schools is partnering with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to provide the BackPack Program to students during the 2020-2021 school year. The program begins in September and will continue throughout the school year. The BackPack Program is a free program that provides kid-friendly, non-perishable food for students most in need to eat over weekends and breaks when school meals are not available and there may be little or no food to eat. Please carefully consider your family’s economic status and determine if this program is something needed by your child(ren). If the BackPack Program is something your family depends upon, please complete the attached registration form. If you are able to make do without this assistance, please allow this program to be used by others. Items distributed in the BackPacks include cereal, peanut butter, juice, fruit cups, pop-top meals, soup, and granola bars. The food will be distributed to your child at the end of the school day on Friday. Please explain to your child that the food must not be eaten or opened until they are home. If this happens, your child may lose the privilege of participating in the program. Parents and guardians concerned with food allergies need to be aware that BackPack Program items may include ingredients such as nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and milk. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank and Jesup Schools will not assume any liability for adverse reactions to food consumed. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank strives to include healthy and safe food. All food is labeled and sealed by the manufacturer. While some products might be past the marked best-by date, we have worked with the manufacturer to ensure they are still safe to consume. If you open an item and notice a problem, please contact the Northeast Iowa Food Bank immediately.

Sincerely,

Shannon Bass Dorthea BovyPartner Capacity Manager School Counselor Northeast Iowa Food Bank Jesup Community Schools 319-235-0507 ext. 126 319-827-1700 ext. 1126
