Every college coach and profes- sional scout within 500 miles will make their way to town at some point in the next few months. Thanks to outstand- ing youth baseball programs, dedicated travel baseball teams and training facili- ties like Carolinas Baseball Center and On Deck Baseball Academy, our play- ers are among the best in the Southeast. The Southwestern 4A Baseball Conference is recognized across the state as the premier baseball conference in North Carolina. Yes, baseball is alive and well in South Charlotte. This season should be one for the record books! In the Southwestern 4A Conference longtime friends and coaches Hal Bagwell of Ardrey Kell and Danny Hignight are in for their greatest battle ever. Ardrey Kell is com- ing off a season that saw the team reach the state championship series in only their sec- ond season. Providence is loaded this year and led by everyone’s All-American Richie Shaffer. The Knights of Ardrey Kell will once again rely on outstanding pitching from Univer- sity of Georgia signee Alex Wood and junior hurler Ryan Butler. Ryan Stetson returns as one of the top hitters in the area and second baseman Logan Ratledge, only a sophomore, will take on an even larger role this season. The rest of the Knights lineup should be rock solid as well with leading players Zico Pasut and Jack Reinheimer. Providence will rely on the big stick of Clemson signee Richie Shaffer to carry the of- fense and also call on him to pitch on a regu- lar basis. With a 90 plus mph fastball, Shaf- fer is the top two-way player in the area. He is also a candidate to be selected in the first 2-3 rounds of the major league draft. The Panthers are also loaded with outstanding players Tyler Zupcic, CA Clayton, Kurt Semeniuk and Brett Austin. The winner of this battle will deserve the conference title. Before we give the trophy away, we need to pay attention to a couple of other very strong Southwestern 4A teams. Butler will be led by The Greater Charlotte Area Hot Stove League Player of the Year Tyler Tewell. Many consider Tyler to be the best pure hitter in the Charlotte region. The Bulldogs are a solid team and will challenge Ardrey Kell and Provi- dence. Myers Park will also be a contender with solid players Brian Holberton, Chris Overman and JD Ey. South Meck will feature Spencer Shuey, Deuce Wright, Joseph Shealy and Casey Gebhardt. Weddington hopes to also create some noise with Brad Collins and Pe- ter Hendel leading the way for the Warriors. Moving away from the Southwestern 4A Conference we can find some amazing play- ers and teams. Marvin Ridge completed an amazing first season of baseball and now will aim for the state championship in year two. Scott Ship- man, Byron Haag and UNC Charlotte signee Shane Basen are a strong trio with a fantastic group of teammates. The Mavericks will be a tough out for nearly every team they play this spring. Luke Bard and Ty Linton are the backbone for what will be another strong Charlotte Christian team. Bard, the next in a long line of baseball playing Bard’s will take the mound for Georgia Tech next season. Over at Charlotte Catholic, pitcher Danny Vliet and sophomore shortstop Alex Jensen hope to lead the Cougars to the state play- offs. Charlotte Latin, Providence Day and other area schools are also looking forward to the spring season. See BASEBALL, page 14 The South Charlotte Sports Report will host a spring break baseball camp, April 6th-10th, at the 25,000 square foot Carolinas Baseball Center indoor facility. This special spring break camp will focus on the development of baseball or softball skills in a professional atmosphere with some of the top baseball instruc- tors in the area. Included among the coaches will be a group of former ma- jor league baseball players! Campers will focus on hitting, fielding, pitching and base running drills. Instruction time will include batting cage work and game play on the full size major league infield at Carolinas Baseball Center. Whether your son or daughter plays t-ball or travel ball this camp will meet the needs for each level of baseball or softball player. The camp is open to players from age 5-15 and will take place from 9:00am-12:30pm each day. See BASEBALL & SOFTBALL CAMP, page 4 Have you ever been to watch a high school ladies soft- ball game? Before I kicked off the pub- lishing of The South Charlotte Sports Re- port, my answer was no. I had no clue what I was miss- ing! The action is fast paced, the play- ers are some of the most hard working athletes around and the games are full of strategic decisions. The South Char- lotte community is loaded with talent- ed softball players. Many local players have gone on to play key roles for some of the top softball programs in the coun- try. The 2009 high school softball sea- son promised to be loaded with excite- ment. The top question on the minds of softball fans in the area has to be, can Butler win yet another state champion- ship? The answer? Maybe..... The loss of Constance Orr who is now pitching for UNC-Chapel Hill is huge. Orr controlled the pitchers mound last season, not al- lowing an earned run until the state cham- pionship. Butler still has plenty of talent, including Chelsea Stamey and Kelsey Spurrier. New play- ers will have to step into key roles for The Bulldogs to continue their amazing run of titles. Other local teams are hungry to grab the top spot in the Southwestern 4A Con- ference if Butler were to fall from the top. CAMP WITH US THIS SUMMERWith the temperature hovering around 20 degrees and patches of snow still in my backyard it’s hard to believe summer is just around the corner. In a few months, the kids will enjoy their hard earned summer break. After a couple days at home, many parents will find themselves looking for a few hours of “alone time.” The South Charlotte Sports Report will be there to help. We have planned a summer full of positive youth sports camps. Our camps all maintain a very high focus on positive instruction and more importantly good sportsmanship. Our philosophy is to partner with the very best coaches in the area and offer first-class summer camps at an affordable price. We strive to deliver a fun experience for every single camper. Our camps are all run in the same fashion, allowing for parents to know what they are buying when they send a child to a South Char-lotte Sports Report Camp. From start to finish, our camps operate with a focus on customer service for the camper and parents. Our camp schedule for this year promises to be the best ever. Starting with our Spring Break base-ball and softball camp April 6th-10th we promise to deliver a strong product for the community. We will offer camps for basketball, football, baseball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading and a multi-sport camp. Please take the time to look at all of our camps at www.southcharlottesportscamps.com. Our camps are all open for enrollment now and many of you have taken full advantage of the early signup window. If you have any questions, please call me, Tripp Roakes at 704-906-5466 or email [email protected]. We want to thank all of our campers from the past year and their parents for the amazing support. Please spread the word and help us to grow our camps this summer. Have a wonderful week!

HOMETOWN PAPER

The younger players will receive instruction designed to improve their experience on the field. The South Char-lotte Sports Report believes that proper fundamentals will greatly increase each child’s experience on the baseball or softball field. Nothing makes a young player happier that catching a pop fly or reaching first base with a solid hit!

Older players will receive more detailed instruction, allowing them to increase their overall skill set. Camp work will include tips to allow them to close out their re-spective seasons with a renewed level of confidence. Each player will take 100’s of swings each day inside the five batting cages.

Campers will have tons of opportunities to play, com-pete and laugh out loud with their friends. We are so excited to offer this camp at Carolinas Baseball Center, a beautiful indoor athletic facility in South Charlotte.

The camp offers the guarantee of no weather related issues.

This Spring Break Baseball and Softball Camp is de-signed to provide athletes of all ages and abilities an equal chance for success. We welcome every level of player. Regardless of your skill set this camp will be FUN and CHALLENGING!

Campers will be divided into groups according to age and friend requests.

Bird is theword...FOR PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY & ORTHODONTICS

The ulnar collat-eral ligament (UCL) connects the humerus to the ulna and pre-vents the elbow from turning outward. It is commonly injured in baseball pitchers and overhead throw-ing athletes because of the tremendous stress they put on this

ligament during throwing. Risk factors include starting throwing and performing difficult types of pitches at an early age (change up, sliders), excessive throwing with-out adequate rest, playing the position of pitcher on the team, and participation in year-round youth baseball leagues or multiple leagues simultaneously.

Athletes with UCL injuries typically complain of pain on the inside of their elbow during the accelera-tion of throwing. Most UCL tears develop on a chronic basis from repetitive stretching and attenuation of the ligament but can sometimes present acutely with a pop-ping noise, sharp pain, and sudden inability to continue throwing.

A useful test to detect this injury on physical exami-nation is the moving valgus test which reproduces the

painful arc of motion of the throwing athlete (see fig-ure).

A well organized interval throwing program, ad-equate rest periods between games, and a general con-ditioning program can lower the risk of UCL injury in young athletes. This consist of proper throwing me-chanics, flexibility exercises, as well as core and upper body strengthening, particularly the medial flexor-pro-nator mass.

Athletes with an UCL injury who plan to continue throwing at a high level, who have failed conservative management, and are willing to participate in the reha-bilitation may elect to undergo ligament reconstruction or Tommy John surgery, named after the famous base-ball player who returned to play after this career-ending injury. Very successful, growth plate protective, mini-mally invasive surgical techniques have been developed over the years to restore a stable elbow and return the athlete to competitive throwing. These involved recon-structing the torn UCL by creating a new ligament out of tissue harvested from one of the tendons of the knee. Over the course of the rehabilitation period, this graft strengthens and becomes the new UCL of the elbow.

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears of the elbow in young throwing athletes present special challenges. A well developed conditioning and interval throwing pro-gram may help prevent this common injury.

We sat down with Martin Barnett of The National Scouting Report (NSR) to learn more about the college recruiting process.

What help can NSR provide to the family of a high school athlete? “NSR’s primary mission is to educate high school student athletes and their families on the college athletics recruiting process and providing assistance to qualified student athletes in securing scholarship offers. We offer free evaluations for the families of any high school student athlete to help them learn about the process and determine if they would be a good fit for NSR’s prospect database. We find that because many families confine their college search to a very small selection of schools and go into the process with a very limited understanding of how the process works, they are not nearly as successful as they could be in securing a college scholarship and realizing the dream of their son or daughter playing inter-collegiate athletics.” What tends to be the most often asked question you run into?“What’s the first step in the recruiting process? And the short answer is, be very dili-gent in identifying your goal early. There are many factors that go into whether or not a school is right for you. Size of student body, geographic location, public or private, compatibility with the coach and the style of play, needs of the program and many other factors go into making the right choice. Do not waste energy and resources on trying to get your student-athlete exposure until you have some kind of target or goal in mind.” The maze of NCAA recruitment can be full of land mines, how does NSR help the families to reach their goal of finding a place for their child to continue their athletic careers in college? “The biggest thing that NSR does for families other than just educating them on the process is providing them with broad exposure to a large sampling of schools that they probably would not be considering otherwise. The athlete request list that I received on 2-23-09 had two NCAA Division I schools, three Division II schools, 5 Division III schools, 3 NAIA schools and 2 Junior College represented ranging geographically between North Carolina,Virginia, Minnesota, Ohio, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

And we receive a similar list on a bi-weekly basis.” Talk about some of the partnerships you have begun to Form?“NSR has only had an office in Charlotte since September, but we really feel welcomed by the Charlotte sports community so far. We have developed a relationship with Carolina Courts in Indian Trail, a beautiful new facility for basketball and volleyball, as a resource for their outstanding basketball prospects and a similar relationship with Carolina Baseball Center for their softball program. Regionally we are developing partnerships as far away as Fayetteville, NC and of course we are still involved heavily with ASA for all of their softball combines in the Carolinas.” At what age do you normally start working with student-athletes?“If a young student athlete is committed to the goal of playing inter-collegiate ath-letics, freshman year of high school is not too early. Starting then, the parents have plenty of time to compile a solid game and/or skills footage library and begin to alert target schools that their son or daughter should be on the radar. Having that extra time to get the job done is a great luxury, but it’s not a necessity. We started work-ing with a senior volleyball outside hitter this past October that had literally not even started the process, and we now have her talking seriously to 8 schools.” How important are grades in the recruiting process?“Grades are extremely important with the schools that we provide prospect informa-tion to. A rule of thumb is every .10 in GPA will open the doors at 10 to 15 additional institutions. Of course our goal is not only to secure a roster spot, but to get scholar-ship money as well. We are very proud of our $13,000 per year scholarship average.”

Does NSR concentrate on any particular sports?“The NSR prospect list includes student athletes playing in over 30 NCAA sanctioned sports from diving to water polo. However, the Charlotte office tends to concentrate on Mens and Womens Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, Lacrosse and of course Softball, Volleyball and Field Hockey for the the ladies as well as Football for the men.”

Allie is one of the top all-around athletes in the area and this will be her final go around in high school. She would like nothing more than to close her career with a conference championship.

Providence will be much improved this year as well. Led by Leah Quant, Sarah Casella and Missy Wills, the Panthers play together as a team and set very high goals for themselves. The team has worked hard all offseason in anticipation of a run at the conference title.

Ardrey Kell will be led by The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Softball Player of the Year, Ka-lie Lang. Kalie is full of determination and should be a major force both on the mound and at third base for The Knights. Jen Rosene will also provide solid pitching for the team. Mickey Williams and Stephanie Wood round out a nice quartet of tal-ented softball players.

Marvin Ridge is building quite a softball pro-gram with the best young talent in the area. Be-hind Caitlin Kurtz, Erin Kayton, Erin and Megan Robertson and Ashley Christie, The Mavericks will become a force in the 3A classification the next few years. Softball at Marvin Ridge has received a real boost from the dedication of a few local parents to travel softball programs.

Charlotte Catholic, Charlotte Christian, Provi-dence Day and South Meck will all hope to pull a few upsets this season as they continue to build their programs.

Many of these players will be rewarded at the end of the season with a selection to the softball all star games at The BATTLE OF THE BORDER ALL STAR SHOWCASE. This unique event is co-owned by The South Charlotte Sports Report. Nomina-tions are now being accepted for the all star game on June 23rd at Winthrop University. The top tal-ent showcase in the North Carolina / South Car-olina region will also be held on June 22nd. Any article on high school softball in South Charlotte would be incomplete without taking the time to mention area travel softball programs. A very dedicated group of parents and coaches have been working hard for many years to establish top programs in the South Charlotte community. These younger teams have traveled across the country in search of the best competition and in turn the play-ers have improved by leaps and bounds. The South

Charlotte Sports Report wants to take a moment to encourage each parent of a young girl to explore softball op-portunities. It’s a super game and there is an abundance of great coaching available in the area. If you have an open afternoon, take your daugh-ter out to the ballpark. Trust me when I say to-day’s softball is a lot different from yesterday’s ver-sion of slow pitch softball!

TEAM CAROLINA HOCKEY AIMS HIGHIn only its fifth year of junior

hockey, Team Carolina contin-ues to improve. Led by return-ing veterans, and aided by a large group of rookies, Team Carolina has qualified for ju-nior playoffs for the first time in team history.

Three of the top players; AJ Butler, Matt Wilkins, and Thomas Nitschie played every game this season, and were se-lected to represent Team Caro-lina at the MET South Jr. B All-Star game in Boston. These key skaters were supported by other leaders like Andrew Swint

and Colin Wilson on Defense, and a large group of young rookies playing forward. Coach Bob Halkidis talks about the program, “ Our goal is to build a team where players

from Carolina can develop into college players without having to leave home. This season we have several players (Thomas Nitschie, George Gerasimou, AJ Butler, Matt Wilkins, Colin Wilson) being scouted by junior A programs.”

Coach Halkidis adds “ We would like Team Carolina to be a destina-tion for players wanting to develop into top flight hockey players”

The team recently clinched a play-off spot in the MET Jr. B Playoffs, a strong accomplishment for the skat-ers. The team is one of the few teams at this level that consists of 100% lo-cal talent (greater Charlotte region). Junior B hockey features boys rang-ing from 15 years old to 20 years old, although Team Carolina is one of the youngest teams assembled. Given their youth and their local ties, a playoff berth was a significant accom-plishment.

Congratulations to Team Carolina for their outstanding accomplish-ments and dedication to becoming the best hockey players possible.

Marvin Ridge High School Ladies JV basketball coach Zachary Barjona understands how to take a large group of children and teach them to work as one. As the father of six, he has had a lot of practice! This winter, Coach Barjona as-sembled 13 young ladies and led them to an 18-1 record on the basketball court.

The team worked very hard all season and with each win, their confidence grew more and more. Yes, they did suffer the one setback to Hickory Ridge. According to Coach Barjona the loss taught them a lesson about pre-game preparation and forced them to work much harder to close out the season with only one loss.

Coach Barjona spoke about the season and his team lead-ers.

“What made the team spe-cial is the leadership. Katie Agres, Kailey Filter, and Katie Lombard were great captains. This was their 2nd year on the team and they set a tone for the

rest of the girls. What made it even more special, is the fact that “ everyone “ contributed throughout the year. Ultimately, this is what winning is all about. I’ll take the 18-1 record but not at the ex-pense of how proud I am of every player on this team.”

“Offensively, our point guards Katie Agres and Anna Lipocky did a great job of con-trolling the tempo of games. Be-cause of Katie’s ability to set up the offense and Anna’s ability to create off the dribble, they pro-vided opportunities for shooters like Rachel Walker and Mikayla Sweeney and post players Katie Lombard and Marina Morrison to be more effective. Defensive-

ly, Kailey Filter was our leader. She would never keep quiet and that’s where defense begins.....with communication. We also got some consistent offensive and defensive efforts from play-ers off the bench such as Rachel Miller, Jazmin Hitchcock, Alex Duty, Rachel Miller, Brittany Clark, Kelly Bassett and last but certainly not least....Char-lotte Johnston. Each player un-derstood their roles and were willing to make the necessary

sacrifices for each other.”

With the sea-son of success now in the rear view mirror, The Mavericks can set their focus on the future. Coach Barjona hopes these young la-dies become the foundation for a winning tradition at Marvin Ridge.

“ H o p e f u l l y this JV team will

establish this winning tradition at the varsity level. By the end of the season, this team under-stood the importance of having a unified, winning mentality. As for the future, I’m sure they intend on taking this founda-tion they have established and building on it at the varsity lev-el. So I would have to say that the future looks promising for The Lady Mavericks.”

Many of the young ladies have already started off season

workouts. After tasting suc-cess on the junior varsity level, these Mavericks are hungry to find success in varsity basket-ball. Hard work is the key in-gredient to winning and this group of 13 basketball players already know a little bit about hard work!

The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates the Mar-vin Ridge Lady Mavericks ju-nior varsity basketball team on an amazing season! Keep reaching for the stars!

TOP BASEBALL PLAYERS IN THE AREA

Can I coach this team? If I could build my own roster of players from the area, these are some of the players I would like to start with. Not sure how I would find enough playing time for everyone, but I think I could build one of the top high school teams in the country! It sure would be fun to try! --- Tripp Roakes, Publisher

MATTHEWS BASKETBALL UNDERWAY! MARA Basketball sign-ups in process

Matthews, September 29th - Basketball signups have been brisk for the 2008 - 2009 edition of MARA Basketball. With over 500 players last winter, the league has doubled in size in the last four years. MARA Basketball is becoming one of the dominant recreation leagues in the southern part of Charlotte. “Basketball interest has peaked over the several years with the ACC in our backyard as well as the emergence of the UNC Charlotte, Winthrop and Davidson basketball programs” mentioned Jeff White, MARA’s Basketball Commissioner. Last year MARA fielded over 60 teams. “We’re putting out a really good product inside what is already a strong athletic organization” White stated. MARA basketball has become a teaching and developmental league without losing it’s competitive spirit. “We’re very competitive, we have more practice time, more games, longer games as well as professional referees and great facilities. MARA also has an all-star program and holds a Southeast Charlotte All-Star Tournament (The SCAT) that attracted 24 teams last spring. ” We have gotten tremendous support from the Principals, Faculty and Athletic Directors at the schools we use. As busy as they are, they always find a way to partner with us and make sure they support their students and local association. Providence, Butler and East Mecklenburg High Schools as well as Jay M. Robinson, South Charlotte, Community House and Crestdale Middle Schools and Mat-thews, Elizabeth Lane, McKee Road and Endhaven Elementary Schools have all partnered to make this happen”. The kids are the benefactors. It gives them opportunity to learn a team sport and all the lessons that come with it.

MARA participants also benefit from their association with the jr.nba/jr.wnba as well as their par-ticipation in the Charlotte Bobcat Youth Basketball network. Benefits of the Bobcats network are coaches, player and referee clinics, Bobcat uniforms as well as group ticket opportunities. MARA offers leagues for boys and girls from ages 5 - 17.

In person sign-ups will continue on Saturday 10/4 and 10/11 from 9:00am - 12:00pm and Tues-day, 10/14 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Arthur Goodman Park, 120 South Trade Street in Matthews. Online is open now at WWW.MARASports.Org. Space is limited. Call Jeff White at (704) 579-1061 for more information
