Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open UniversityIntroduction to the Programme

Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University has been conducting the 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) programme since 2012 for trainingthe untrained teachers of the elementary levels (lower primary and Upper primary)in the state of Assam. In Assam, the Right to Education Act, 2009 came into forceon April 1, 2010 which makes it necessary that teachers who do not possess theprescribed qualifications would require to acquire the same within a period of 5years i.e. by 2015. The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) accordedapproval to the state Government of Assam in 2012 to conduct the D.El.Ed.programme through ODL-cum-contact mode by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State OpenUniversity for training of 68,727 untrained teachers of Assam. So far 49,061 teachersdeputed by SSA and 2,731 teachers by BTC (Bodo Territorial Council ) have beenregistered in this programme. The Project Approval Board, MHRD, 2015-16 hassanctioned another 8,584 number of untrained teachers for undergoing theprogramme in 2016-2018 session. This is the sixth batch of the D.El.Ed Programmeconducted by the University. All the teachers trainees enrolled in this programmeare in-service teachers and deputed by the Assam Sarba Siksha Abhijan Missionand BTC.

After receiving the approval from NCTE, the Government of Assam hadentrusted the University to conduct the programme and accordingly, the Universityhad designed and developed the course curriculum in the light of NCTEguidelines. The programme has been conducted since 2012 using the infrastructuraland instructional facilities of various D.El.Ed. institutions such as DIETs, B.Ed.institutions and other study centres of the KKHSOU of the state. In 2014, NCTEhad revised the course curriculum for the D.El.Ed. programme and accordingly,KKHSOU has also revised the entire syllabus as per the guidelines of NCTE. Therevised syllabus will be effective for the trainees to be enrolled in the 2015-16 batch.

Detailed guidelines and information on the programme, its objectives, coursestructure, counselling, practicum, workshop, assignments, evaluation etc. areincorporated in the Programme Guide. It is expected that this guide book will helpthe teacher trainees to pursue their training programme smoothly while performingtheir regular duties in schools. Also, it will help all the Study Centres in carrying outthe programme as per the prescribed schedule and guideline.
