MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

Thank you once again, to all who participated in our M&M stewardship campaign this year. It was a major

success on several counts: 1. More people participated this year than last year, 2. The average amount

pledged is a good bit higher this year, 3. Over twenty new families have participated this year, and 4. Over

thirty folks have increased their pledges.

We have a lot to celebrate at BAUMC, and I’m thankful to all of you who give of your time, talents, and

treasures to support our mission to “Love God, Love One Another, and Make Disciples for Jesus

Christ.” We continue to faithfully pay our apportionments. We continue to faithfully meet all of our

financial obligations. We continue to reach out in Christian love to the community and the world, and we

continue to meet our budget, partly because of your generosity, and partly because the leaders of the

various mission and ministry groups are careful not to overspend. Thank you all for your fine stewardship.

If you haven’t pledged, it’s not too late. If you’re on the fence about why it’s helpful to do so, please don’t

hesitate to contact me so that we can have some conversation around it. In this time of political unrest, it

is more important than ever to stand up for our vision to “Love As Jesus Loves.”

Thank you, friends. Peace, Byron

Also many thanks to our church administrator, Tony Ciampaglio, for creating this graph to give us a great

visual on the amounts that individuals and families give to God through our congregation.

Quiet Christmas

Sunday, December 18, 5:00 pm

Mt Carmel Chapel

Corner of Wheel & Emmorton Rd

Sometimes events in our life cause us to not feel like celebrating Christmas. Perhaps you

are feeling a hurt or loss but still want to honor Christ’s birth. We have a special service at

Mt. Carmel each year that celebrates Christmas in a quiet way. There is no pressure to be

“jolly.” Come and observe the season in a worshipful, meditative way.

Special Brass Ensemble Music

On Sunday, December 18, at the 9:20 AM service in the Sanctuary, the Sounding Brass Quintet will be providing special music and accompany our choir during our worship service. Please plan to join us in worship at this service and enjoy a special musical experience.

DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2017

Is redemption possible for Ebenezer Scrooge? Pastor and author Matt Rawle believes so as he discovers the teachings of Jesus in the words of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. Rawle dives deep into the dark, sad, greedy world of Scrooge and discovers a man in dire need of a second chance. Along with Scrooge, we meet the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future and in the process learn about living with and for others in a world blessed by Je‐sus. Rediscover and reinvigorate your Christian faith this Advent and Christ‐mas season and look at this familiar classic through the lens of faith. Advent Study Tuesday, November 29 - December 20 in room 202 from 7:00-8:15pm. Register after worship in the parlor hallway through November 27. Book $10

IT'S HERE! From John Leavit comes this elegant

cantata for Christmas, set up in the form of a classic

“Lessons and Carols” service. A colorful tapestry of

beautiful sounds, this major work has great variety in

its scope and style. Presented at 9:20 and 11:00 on

December 11, LIVE with full orchestra and choir.

Staff Spotlight Interviews

Birthday - August 10 - Anjanette Jacobs,

Anjanette was hired as the director of the Children's Christian Center (CCC) in Aug 2006 so she has been caring for our children for over 10 years now. The CCC, which provides full day 3, 4, and 5 year old programs and before/after school and summer programs for K through 8th grade, is an outreach ministry of BAUMC. Anyone that has had children or grandchildren in the program can attest to the great job she is doing running such an awesome program "where faith and children can grow together". Anjanette's favorite Bible verse is from the new Kings James version Psalm 138:3 "In the day when I cried out, You answered me bold with strength in my soul". What a great reminder of the support God provides and encourages us to find strength in Him. In addition to her love of being with the children at the center, Anjanette also enjoys being

outdoors and being active, especially taking her dogs (15 and 3 years old ) for walks. Fall is her favorite season ‐ with both the ideal weather and the beautiful colors. Anjanette's passion is educating children and watching them learn and grow in their faith. She loves being able to provide the educational and spiritual tools for the leaders of our future (our children). Happy Belated Birthday and thanks for all you do for the children at CCC!

Happy Birthday—June 2 - Diane Eakes

Diane Eakes was hired as the director of the Tiny Tot School (TTS) effective Sep 1 after over‐lapping this summer with the retiring director. The TTS 3 and 4 year old preschool program is an outreach ministry of BAUMC. With Diane's background in education and her passion for teaching young kids, we are blessed and excited to have her on board. Diane and her husband (who works for Harford County Public Schools as director at Harford Glen) have 3 children: Elizabeth (12th grader), Will (10th grader) and Julia (6th grader). They live in Harford County, and their children attend North Harford High and North Harford Middle Schools.

Diane enjoys playing tennis, yoga, and being outdoors going for walks or caring for their chickens and peacocks. She also enjoys being in the kitchen cooking and baking. And, Diane is very active in her church, teaching classes, VBS, and participating in mission trips with the youth. Her favorite Bible verse is Psalm 37:4, " ... delight in the Lord and He will grant you your hearts request". She is pas‐sionate about teaching children and helping them grow in their faith. She finds strength in sharing her love and faith with others, but most especially with children who are our future. Welcome to BAUMC!

Happy Birthday, Christopher Pelfrey - November 23 Chris has been Bel Air UMC Director of Young Adult Ministries since September 2015.

Chris and Jen, his wife of 7 years have four children, Megan, Christopher II, Rebecca and Logan. Family comes first. They love to do things together as a family, even if it’s as simple as a movie and popcorn night at home. His hobbies are fitness, bodybuilding and fast cars.

His favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 33:3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ His passions are making disciples, social justice and teaching at a Community College.

Happy Birthday, Thureen! - January 14

On January 14, 2017, we’ll be wishing Thureen Drake a “Happy Birthday”. Thureen began working as evening custodian at BAUMC in 2002 and she very much enjoys her work and the people with whom she works.

Thureen is the youngest member of her family. She had two brothers and a sister who are now deceased. For many years, Thureen cared for her mother who is now deceased. You would never know it now, but Thureen said as a child she was very shy. Her favorite Bible

selection is Jeremiah 17:7-8. “But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” When Thureen isn’t working at BAUMC or at home, she enjoys watching QVC and the cooking channel on TV. She also enjoys playing UNO with her aunt and cousins. She enjoys being and talking with her nieces and nephews. She very adamantly said, “I love my family!”

Happy Birthday, Tony Ciampaglio - December 20

Do you ever wonder about the Atomic Orange Corvette in the parking lot at all hours of the day and night? It belongs to a member of our staff!

Sports car enthusiast, Tony Ciampaglio is our Church Administrator and has been a staff member since December 2013. Tony and his wife Sue have lived in Harford County since they were mar‐ried in 1977. Their son and daughter grew up in the youth group at BAUMC. While Tony was blessed with a long and rewarding corporate career ‐ “I always knew that there would be a time when I would want to end my career in industry and pursue a path that would enable me to use

my gifts and skills that I have been given in service to others.”

After a 38 year career with BGE/Constellation/Exelon, Tony now uses his gifts and talents to the benefit of BAUMC. His dramatic change in his commute to work, from a 35 mile drive to a 5 minute ride, leaves Tony energized for his seemingly around the clock work here at our church.

Tony’s two favorite bible verses are:

Luke 12:48

For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Happy Birthday Linda Eye - January 15

Since May of 2011, Linda has been our church bookkeeper handling all the accounting includ‐ing payables, payroll and recording giving. We couldn't manage without her special number skills! She and her husband, Mark, were high school sweethearts ‐ now celebrating thirty years of marriage. They are members of St. Stephens Church. Their daughter, Cloe, is a graduate of Hood College and daughter, Lauren, a student at Old Dominion University. Lauren is a lacrosse player at Old Dominion and her parents are avid LAX enthusiasts and team supporters ‐ often seen tailgating in Norfolk, Virginia! Besides attending sporting events, Linda enjoys boating

and gathering with family and friends. Linda has a joy for life. Here is a quote that she enjoys "Never waste any amount of time doing anything important when there is a sunset outside that you should be sitting under." C. JoyBell Linda is passionate about giving back. She encourages her family to volunteer and give back to the communities in which they live!

Happy Birthday Patrick Merrill - January 27

Patrick Merrill is our gifted organist and piano accompanist. His music graces our sanctuary services putting us all in a spirit of worship. The Chancel Choir members depend on him to keep us on pitch and on tempo! Patrick's grandparents are members of our congregation, often seen on the right side of the aisle enjoying his playing. He is encouraged and supported by his parents and two brothers, one older, one younger. No time for other hobbies, music is his livelihood ‐ he teaches at the Baltimore School for the Arts, George Washington University and at Bel Air Music Studio, all this while he is working on his doctorate at Peabody in Harpsicord!

Two thoughts are meaningful to him, "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent." ‐ Victor Hugo and "My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music." Psalm 57:7 Patrick is inspired in his teaching when he sees high level concepts click with his students. His joy comes in cultivating a love of learning!

All About that Baby!

December 18th @ 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Children’s Musical

Angels and shepherds and…talking sheep? Oh, my! Nathaniel, a slightly absentminded shepherd

who dearly loves his sheep, literally runs into two sisters who are there in Bethlehem for the

census. He invites them to the fields to meet his sheep and his shepherd siblings. Little do they

know that evening they will get a front row seat to the angels’ announcement of the birth of Jesus.

As the children and sheep react to the angels’ news of the birth of a Baby King, Nathaniel wonders

if it is really all about that baby!? Eventually the sheep steer the group in a mad dash to the Nativity

where they all kneel and quietly worship Baby Jesus in the manger.

Now we have a surprise for everyone in the Sheep Department. You won’t want to miss this!!!

UMW Movie - "Last Holiday" The holidays will be over, so join us for an afternoon of fellowship and food on Sunday, January 8, 2017 in McComas Hall. The Bel Air United Methodist Women invite all women of the church to watch the 2006 comedy‐drama "Last Holiday." Queen Latifah plays Georgia Byrd, a shy, unassuming woman who works in the cookware department at Kragen's Department Store in New Orleans and longs to cook professionally. After accidentally bumping her head, she is told that she has a rare brain condi‐tion and only a few weeks to live. Georgia decides to quit her job, liqui‐date her assets, and set off on a dream vacation in Europe. Her adven‐tures fulfill the better life she journals about in her Book of Possibilities. The movie starts at 2:00 PM (with popcorn, of course) and then we'll en‐joy pizza, salad, and dessert afterwards. Please call Alice Archer at 410‐838‐7357 or e‐mail [email protected] if you're planning to attend.

The Chabadza-Healing Hands Across Zimbabwe mission team will be taking orders for Alternative Christmas Giving. Please consider helping us build up our medical clinics in Zimbabwe through this program. Just as Christ is the Hope of the world, you can give the gift of hope and love this Christmas season. In return for a one‐time donation, our mission team will provide a certificate that can be gifted to a recipient on your Christmas gift list. Your donation will support the work of our medical clinic in Munyarari, Zimbabwe as they provide vaccinations and anti‐retroviral drugs to many of God's people who are in greatest need. Order forms are available at the Welcome and Information Center, the church office, and in upcoming e‐Spires. The final deadline for ordering is December 12. For questions or an electronic order form, please call or email Jill Charlton at 443‐512‐5983 or [email protected].

Do you have a heart for ministering to others, one on one? Consider joining our Shepherd Ministry. Shepherds answer God’s call to care for one another and to serve as Christian friends to members of God’s family. Some serve people who are experiencing crisis, and need the love and support of a Christian friend. Some serve individuals or families who are challenged with chronic or serious illness. Many Shepherds serve our senior citizens who appreciate notes, phone calls and friendly visits. Our goal is to offer a Shepherd to as many members as we can, beginning with those in greatest need. We make regular contacts and pray for our "flocks" daily. Shepherds try to be available in times of joy and sorrow. Often, a shepherd is most appreciated for simply being there, which demonstrates our being a ministry of "presence”. A Shepherd's commitment to the ministry is best described by the acronym PACE: P ‐ Pray for your people daily; A ‐ Be available in times of joy and sorrow; C ‐ Make regular contacts; E ‐ Encourage your families by demonstrating your love for God. For more details please contact one of our Shepherd leaders: Dave Parker [email protected] Fred Guenthner [email protected] Susan King [email protected] Beth Happick [email protected]
