H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

This week we have welcomed students P-6 back to our school campus. There have been very few tears and they were short lived as classes have quickly settled into a new rhythm of student engagement and learning. There has been a tremendous amount of work go on behind the scenes in order that the transition to learning@home and back to face-to-face have been smooth. I thank our very dedicated staff for their unstinting effort in this regard. As students and teachers have settled back to a routine I acknowledge the families that are new to our school and trust you feel welcome even in the unprecedented times. EVENTS CANCELLED In light of Covid-19 the Queensland Government has made the following decision: Schools must not conduct assemblies, interschool activities, camps, excursions, sports or arts events including concerts and performances events. Specifically, for Jinibara SS, this means cancellation of Sharing parades, Disco, Creative Arts Performance, School Musical, Sports Day, Public Speaking, Coalition Showcase, Book Week, Under 8s Day, Yr 6 Graduation. Undoubtedly, our students and the whole school community share the disappointment. Should government advice change significantly about these gatherings we will revisit this decision. Many thanks for your understanding once again. STUDENTS ON-LINE

From time to time, I have cause to remind parents about student on-line behaviour regarding their use of social media. On this occasion however, my concern is about student’s on-line gaming. Unfortunately, a Jinibara family has reported a very unsavoury incident involving their student and a younger sibling. The student was encouraged to allow another individual to join the on-line game. The individual was not who they purported to be and their target was the younger sibling. The vigilant parent was able to intervene and ensure the safety of both children. This very serious matter has been reported to the police. This is a reminder to all parents – ensure you know with what and with who your child is interacting. The on-line environment is not safe just because your child is at home. Adult supervision is essential. You would not allow a stranger to walk in through the front door and have access to your child. On-line, this can happen more easily and the motives more sinister. Cyber safety must be every parent’s business! CONTINUING ARRANGEMENTS FOR TERM 2 Morning “Drop and Go” for all students

I ask parents and carers to pay particular attention to the requirement for adults to maintain physical distancing of 1.5m at all times if you need to be on or around school grounds. Parents who bring their child to school are encouraged to “park, drop and go” in the car park at the

front of the school.

Page 2: “Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, … · 2020-05-28 · HOMEWORK TERM 2 As a consistent stance across the school, homework (other than home readers

OR

ONLY if it is absolutely necessary to bring your child into the school grounds then please take them to the Junior Covered Play area for a “hug, kiss and go” after 8.30am. The Junior Covered Play Area and A Block Covered Area areas are supervised and children

are to wait there before being taken to their classroom, as has been the practice these last two weeks. Parents and carers should not gather in areas around the school such as outside classrooms, at the school gate and carparks during this time. Afternoon “Collect and Go” for all students

Again, parents are reminded to pay particular attention to the requirement for adults to maintain physical distancing of 1.5m at all times if you need to be on or around school grounds. Parents who collect their child from school are encouraged to “collect and go”

preferably from the gate. Parents can collect their student(s) from 2.30pm onwards directly from the classroom without signing them out from the office. Teachers will only release a child to a known parent or carer and not an older sibling. At approximately 2.55pm, Prep teachers will bring students to the Junior Covered Play Area and at 3.00pm they will be taken to their nominated gate. Years 1-6 teachers will release students at 3.00pm unless a parent collects them from the room. Both school gates are supervised as per our usual arrangements. This means as of 3.00pm, for those children not already collected, your child will be dismissed and then can make their way to either school gate and on home via their usual predetermined route/mode. Choice of gate should be consistent with the morning drop off gate. Parent support for these temporary morning and afternoon arrangements has been terrific and is much appreciated. It remains the case that Qld Police will continue to patrol school drop offs and collections across the next few weeks. Road rules and social distancing will be enforced. PHYSICAL DISTANCING AND HYGIENE AT SCHOOL With all students P-6 returning to school, it is important to remember that effective hygiene practices and physical distancing for adults will play an important role in our school’s operations. To ensure physical distancing protocols are adhered to, it is important

that all adults:

maintain 1.5m physical distance from each other, including in offices and classrooms;

refrain from congregating in and around areas such as school gates, carparks and outside classrooms;

practise effective hand hygiene and cough/sneeze etiquette;

stay away from the school if unwell. I therefore ask parents and carers to pay particular attention to the requirement for adults to maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres at all times while on school grounds and only enter school grounds should you need to. Please do not gather in areas around the school such as carparks, at the school gate or outside classrooms. HOMEWORK TERM 2

As a consistent stance across the school, homework (other than home readers and supporting literacy activities in the lower school) will not be issued for the rest of term two. Students in the upper school are encouraged to research topics of interest and read – chapter books ideally. This will give our families a welcome break from the challenges of “home schooling”. As a school we wi ll revisit this decision before the end of term in anticipation of a return to the “new normal” of homework, post Covid-19. ** Parents who wish to express an opinion regarding what homework might look like as we go forward are welcome to share this via: [email protected] . Your contribution will help to inform our decisions. Please ensure you have your say. STUDENT ILLNESS If your child is unwell, it is essential that you keep them at home. In accordance with Queensland Health Directions, parents or carers of any child showing signs of illness will be asked to collect them immediately from the school.

I understand that some parents and carers may choose to keep their child at home due to special circumstances, medical vulnerability, or concerns about the risk of COVID-19 transmission. If you do not intend for your child to return to normal school attendance from Monday 25 May, 2020, you must notify the school. If you choose to keep your child at home, you remain responsible for their supervision and their learning not the school or their teacher. The learning@home website will remain available and will continue to be updated throughout Term 2 with new resources for students in Prep to Year 10. Students will also be able to view quality curriculum-based television programs on three different stations – programming information can be found on the learning@home website. SINCERE THANKS

On behalf of all staff, I sincerely thank you for your patience and support over recent weeks and months of the ongoing medical emergency. The positive feedback from our school community and the willingness of parents and carers to collaborate with us in support of your children’s learning is appreciated. My sincere thanks once again goes to all parents and carers for your support and understanding during these challenging times. Take care and stay safe.

Kind regards

Dr. Ray Bloxham PRINCIPAL

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS

Welcome back to all our families. It has been wonderful to have students from all year levels back to school and settling into classroom and school routines. This week teachers have been revising our school rules with students, which are I am Respectful, I am Responsible, I am Safe and I am a Learner. Students have also been reminded about playtime expectations and being kind to others. Students are encouraged to use their High 5 to solve minor problems in the playground, which includes reporting to a staff member on duty.

Bounce Back and Zones of Regulation

Following the break from school during this unprecedented time, it can be difficult interacting with others again on a larger scale and resolving problems that arise. Bounce Back is a great way to help students build their resilience and gives them strategies to help with emotional and social issues. This chart is an outline of what the acronym, Bounce Back, stands for. Teachers will be discussing and teaching Bounce Back and please feel free to discuss and use Bounce Back at home as a way of helping children build their social and emotional resiliency. The Zones of Regulation will also continue to be a focus and implemented in all classrooms. It is designed to help students gain skills with self-regulating their emotions, which in turn assists them with behaviour. Please have a discussion with your child or children about the different Zones and what they mean and how they can use the Zones Toolbox to help themselves be in the Green Zone. Below are some visuals, which may help to stimulate that conversation.

Uniforms

Just a reminder that students are required to wear the correct school uniform. This week, the most common items that students are wearing incorrectly are incorrect socks and jumpers. Please see the list below of the uniform options and requirements:

Jinibara polo shirt

Jinibara unisex shorts or skorts

School dress

Jinibara reversible house coloured hat

Plain white or Jinibara ankle socks (not black or with logos)

Black shoes with black laces

(the black shoes can be leather, vinyl or joggers with black laces, buckle or velcro)

Jinibara jacket/jumper or plain maroon or grey jumper/jacket (no hoodies or motifs) Jinibara long sleeve polo shirt Plain maroon or grey tracksuit pants Plain maroon or grey tights

Cybersafety

During this term there have been some concerns raised about cybersafety when children have been accessing devices at home, such as an Xbox or iPad. Games that are played online and have communication features can be a great way to connect with friends and family but it can also have negative consequences. Conversations can occur with other players who may not be who they say they are. There are lots of things parents can do to help keep children safe and aware when online. Below are some useful websites that you may wish to visit to obtain detailed information for parents and children: https://www.qld.gov.au/education/schools/health/cybersafety/cybersafety-qss https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

Our target is for students to attend school 93% or more of the time. It is very important for students to attend school on time every day. It is vital for children’s academic and social development. Every day really does count. Please notify the school prior to the start of the school day if your child is sick and is going to be absent. This can be done by calling 3491 1266. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing students every day, all day and on time.

We are looking forward to the return of our students and understand it is an adjustment that is likely to be met with a mixture of feelings from eagerness to apprehension. It can be helpful to acknowledge your child’s feelings, normalise them, discuss help ful strategies if needed, identify positive aspects that your child enjoys about school and provide reminders about the school routine for next week. The Education Department has put together a Fact Sheet on tips for parents and carers to support their chi ld’s wellbeing as they transition back and re-adjust to attending school. (https://jinibarass.eq.edu.au/SupportAndResources/FormsAndDocuments/Documents/Guidance%20Officer/Return-to-school-advice-for-parents.pdf). The Department has also put a fabulous Wellbeing Booklet together with further practical ideas to support wellbeing which can be used at any time. (https://jinibarass.eq.edu.au/supportandresources/formsanddocuments/documents/guidance%20officer/wellbeing-activities-booklet.pdf). Please have a look at these resources and pick one of the ideas in the wellbeing booklet to do this weekend!

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS MUSICAL – “ALICE IN WONDERLAND Jnr” UPDATE

As we are all aware, large concerts/performances have been cancelled for now. This comes as a directive from the Department of Education Queensland. Dr Bloxham has outlined this in his newsletter article above. Even when restrictions relax further, i t would be unfair on our students, teachers and school community to try to jam extra rehearsals in and race to performance in a short time. We really appreciate all the work that students have already put into their roles, be they main characters or chorus. For later in the

year, we are considering some very small-scale classroom/year level performances of sections of what we have rehearsed to date

so the effort that the children have already been put in, does not go to waste…. Any queries: please contact either Ms Gibson or Mrs Grover via email ([email protected] , [email protected]). INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

How wonderful it was to have small groups of musicians tooting some fabulous tunes in their lessons this week. Thank you for sending them along with their equipment. There will be NO Band rehearsals until further notice. Instrumental Music students will continue to have lessons during school time on their scheduled day. SENIOR AND JUNIOR CHOIR Some great news!!! Mrs Gibson with Dr Bloxham, have been discussing some possible ways to get our choirs up and running again to begin our return to more ‘normal’ conditions. Once we have finalized the best and safest path to proceed, Mrs Gibson will be in touch either through email or next week’s newsletter so WATCH THIS SPACE. Remember, singing doesn’t have to wait for the

rehearsals. I again encourage all of our choristers to sing whenever they can and even keep an eye out for some fun extras for us to enjoy – let me know what you find. “Just Keep on Singing” DANCE TROUPE Commencing in Week 6, the Senior Dance Troupe will resume their lessons on Friday afternoons between 2-3pm. FUN MUSIC FACTS – Rihanna

Rihanna signed her first record deal at age 16, and Jay-Z played a role in the offer.

Rihanna actually pronounces her name "ree-ANN-uh" not "ree-AH-nuh."

Before she became a worldwide phenomenon, Rihanna was an army cadet in Barbados, her home country.

Rihanna has multiple Guinness World Records, including "most consecutive years of UK no. 1 singles," "female artist with most US no. 1 singles in a year," and "most digital no. 1 singles in the US."

After "Umbrella", originally offered to Brittany Spears, became a hit in 2008, Rihanna had to ban umbrellas from her shows due to security risks.

P&C NEWS Hello all Parents and Citizens of Jinibara State School, P&C Meeting for June 17th

The Jinibara State School P&C Association has decided to hold the June meeting on Wednesday the 17th of June. The Queensland Government’s Roadmap to Easing Restrictions suggests that in Stage 2 (from 12 June), gatherings/meetings of up to 20 people will be permitted. However, many P&Cs have successfully held recent meetings “virtually” using an online platform such as Skype/Zoom etc. Some P&Cs have even reported that their meetings numbers have increased. To determine the best method for our meeting, we would like to know ahead of time if members/parents and carers are wanting to attend. Please email the P&C if you would like to attend this meeting [email protected] Tuckshop and Uniform Shop

Please remember that both our Tuckshop and our Uniform Shop are now open for business. You are welcome to show your support.

The Tuckshop prefers that orders be placed online via Flexischools. We are still working on the finer details of QKR for the Tuckshop and this should be available soon. Cashless is preferred, but any cash orders need to be placed at the start of the school day. Counter sales during lunch and afternoon tea breaks, including fruit break, are bag orders only, so all “See Tuckshop” items will need to be placed as a bag order either via flexischools or using cash at the counter 9.30am cut-off. The Uniform shop will be limiting the number of people at any one time, so please make use of Flexischools or QKR to order online, as we would still like to minimise the number of adults walking through the school. School Banking

Please be aware that school banking is still suspended for now. Disco

Unfortunately, the June Term 2 Disco has been cancelled due to the ongoing requirement for social distancing. Hopefully, it will be back bigger and better in Term 3! P&C Committee
