ACTIVITIES&READINGSTHISWEEKFifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

During this Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we ourselves have experienced. In today’s Gos-pel, Luke uses a special Greek word conveying just

such tenderness. In the other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be “fishers”, haleis, the same word that means catching fish with hooks or nets, to be killed

and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or “life”, meaning “catch or gather people alive,” as animal lovers capture without harming, rescue from “the

wild” for a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals committed to the creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—and Pope Francis’ as well—we who have been “caught alive” by God’s mercy ourselves are to become “missionaries of mercy” during this Jubilee of Mercy, rescuing fel-

low sinners from danger and gathering them into Jesus’ community to enjoy fullness of life.

Friday, February 12th, Knights of Columbus will be hosting Lenten Fish Fry Friday’s from 5:00:pm to 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Followed by Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm in the church.

During this 40-day period each year, the Church unites itself to the mystery of Jesus in the desert. To prepare to celebrate the Easter Mysteries, we devote time during this special season to pray, to perform works of charity, and to

deny ourselves by fulfilling obligations more faithfully. Here is a Lenten schedule for this week: *Ash Wednesday, February 10th: 7am: Mass with distribution of ashes 12Noon: Word Service with distribution of ashes 5pm: Word Service with distribution of ashes 7pm: Word Service with distribution of ashes *Adoration: Mondays 7pm - 8:30pm *Daily Mass: Tues. - Friday at 8am *Morning Prayer: Mon. - Friday at 8:30am *Reconciliation/Confession:Wed.6:30pm, Sat. 3:30pm *Stations of the Cross: Friday 12Noon & 7pm

In 1972 Pope Paul VI revised several ministries and minor clerical orders. One ministry that was pre-

served was the ministry of the instituted aco-lyte. While the term acolyte is at times used

when referring to young men and women who assist at the altar (altar servers), the ministry of acolyte is a permanent institution. Because

the ministry has its roots in the formation of ordained cler-gy, the ministry is reserved to men. The instituted acolyte is appointed to assist the deacon and serve the priest in the celebration of the liturgy. He is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion serving only when sufficient ordi-nary ministers are not available. Men must be at least 21

years of age, fully initiated and living an exemplary Christian way of life, with no impediments to

sacramental reception, (e.g. if married, one must be in val-id marital union recognized by the Church). For more in-

formation please contact Deacon Ray in the parish office.

FEBRUARY 7TH CATECHISM Q & A Q. What distinguishes a mortal sin?A. There are three conditions for a sin to be amortal sin: It is a grave matter, we have fullknowledge of the evil of the act, and we commitit freely and deliberately (Catechism of the Cath-olic Church, paragraph 1761).

We are searching for volunteers interested in creat-ing that good first impression by serving as an Usher

at weekend Masses. Individuals must be willing to greet Parishioners, provide support during the Mass, as-sist in seating at Mass, take up the collection, help manage Communion flow, assist Parishioners in any need

they have, and pass out Bulletins after Mass. The time commitment is about 90 minutes,1 - 2 Sundays a month. Please contact Deacon Ray in the parish office or email him at: [email protected]

The Family Fun Night Ministry needs your help! We are in need of dona-tions for the Annual East-er Egg hunt. We are in need of prepackaged candy, plastic eggs, toys, gift cards, and more. The Easter Egg Hunt is one of the most popular events of the year (hundreds of children attend!) and we need your help to make it the best it can be. For more information you can contact Erik @ 281-236-2729 or @[email protected]. God Bless.

Birthright will be handing out baby bottles after all the Masses the weekend of February 13-14. This is an excellent Lenten project for your family. As you and your children fill the bottles with money to help support Birthright, you may want to take the opportunity to talk about the precious gift of life that God has given us and our obligation to stand up for life.

Knights of Columbus Council 6557 will award $1000 Educational Scholarships to graduating high school

seniors. Two scholarships will be awarded to relatives of council members and one will be

awarded to a St. James graduating parishioner. Applications are due March 15, 2016. Contact Bill Moeller at (832)594-4980

for details and an application.
