He reveals himself as the Light of the world.

God reveals himself to us in Jesus so that we come to know him deeply and encounter His super-abundant love for us – a love that didn’t remain in the high heavens but a love that was personified. God also reveals himself to us so that we too can reveal Him to others, so that we can proclaim the Good News of God’s love by our very lives which is the very purpose of our existence.

In this feast of the Epiphany, let us pray and ask God for wisdom that we may be able to see him in our lives – in the ordinary and supernatural, in the common and the unexpected. Let us pray that we see Him at work in our family, our community and our world. And in encountering Him, may we share Him to those who do not know God’s love and mercy. May we reveal His light to those who are living in darkness, those who are seeking for true happiness, peace, and joy.

May God continue to bless you and your loved ones with his grace of love, peace and joy.

In Christ, Father John

Greetings from India Happy and Healthy Year!

New Year Greetings from Kerala, Southern India. As some of you already know I had a safe trip to my home town, Irinjalakuda in Southern India where the temperature is 65 minimum to 80 plus maximum. We speak Malayalam which is one of the many official languages of India with its own alphabets.

We already started New Year with Holy Mass in my home parish which is also the cathedral. We have 4000 plus families in the parish. Very strong Catholic presence.

I will have New Year lunch in my ancestral home where my chettan (older brother) and my chechy (sister-in-law) live. Their two adult daughters are married and are settled one in Oman and the other in Mumbai. So it is going to be a quiet New year lunch.

Tomorrow i will celebrate a death anniversary Mass for one of my relatives. Day after tomorrow i will travel to another city (eight hours by train from my place) to celebrate a wedding Mass for another relative of mine. The following week another wedding... so I will be kept busy and kept out of trouble. India is thirteen and half hours ahead of California time.

During the New Year Mass I prayed for all of you. I thanked God for all the different gifts that you bring to St. Joseph family. May 2018 bring many more blessings to you, your family and to St. Joseph family.

Warm Regards, Fr. George

Feast of the Epiphany

Friends, we are celebrating this Sunday the Feast of the Epiphany. The term “epiphany” comes from a Greek word that means “to manifest, to show forth or to shine upon.” So, we ask, “What is being shown forth to us in this Christmas season?” Or better yet, “Who is being manifested to us that God wants us to see?”

The Feast of the Epiphany is not so much about the “Three Kings” or the “Wise Men” bringing gifts to our Lord. Rather, it is, above all, about God revealing Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. He reveals himself as a vulnerable and helpless infant born of a mother and a father, as a member of a family - the Holy Family of Nazareth. He reveals himself as the fulfillment of God’s promise to the Jews and the Gentiles. He reveals himself as the Savior of the lowly and the oppressed.

A Big Thank You

On behalf of Fr. George and the Arts & Environment Ministry, we would like to thanks all those who sponsored Christmas Wreaths, Poinsettias, Advent and Christmas Candles to honor their families and friends. We would like to thank all those who shared their Advent and Christmas wishes of Hope, Love, Joy and Peace with the community in the Niches. And lastly, we thank all those special people who work behind the scenes to make the Advent and Christmas seasons special. Our community is truly blessed by the love you share. Happy New Year!

The Arts & Environment Ministry

Farewell And God Bless Long-time parishioner Linda Bartolome was honored at the final Simbang Gabi Mass at 5:30am December 24, as she prepares to leave Alameda. Linda has been active in the Simbang Gabi ministry since it began, and has served as a Eucharistic Minister, helped with hospitality, and been a face of smiling welcome in our parish for many years, but is now leaving to live near her son and his fami ly in Southern California. (Amante also served at St. Joseph as an altar server; and is now a fire fighter.) May God continue to bless her, and to inspire others to rise up and fill the gap she leaves in our community.
