For the past few weeks, we have been hearing the Parables of Jesus found in the Gospel of Matthew. This week, we move from Jesus telling stories to a real life encounter with a Canaanite woman. The detail that this woman is described as being a Canaanite does not have an impact on us, living in the 21st century. However, for a Jewish person, living during the time of Jesus in the 1st century, this detail would be very important and appalling. Canaanite comes from the name Canaan. Canaan was the fourth son of Ham, the youngest son of Noah; thus, Canaan was the grandson of Noah. Canaan was cursed due to Ham’s sin (Gen 9:20-28). Canaan became the progenitor (father) of the Canaanites, also known as the Phoenicians, in Greek. The Phoenicians were a race of people who lived along the Mediterranean coast, from Turkey down to the border of Egypt.

Thus, the Canaanites occupied the seacoast of Palestine. When the Israelites finished their 40 year Exodus in the desert, they had reached the Jordan River, the edge of the Promised Land. Joshua sent spies to survey the land. There they discovered a “fine, rich land” that was occupied by many strong races, including the Canaanites. The Canaanites were sailors and traders, whose main cities were Tyre and Sidon, serving as the center of their trade. Most importantly, it must be understood that the Canaanites were not Jewish. They were pagans. The Canaanites practiced cult and devotion to Baal, Asheroth, and other gods/idols. The Canaanites did not believe in the God of Israel (YHWH). For the Jewish people, the Canaanites were an enemy and threat to Israel. Not only did the Canaanites physically threaten the Israelites with attacks and battles, but the religion of the Canaanites was also an enemy and threat to the faith of Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, we read numerous times, how the people of Israel would abandon worship of the true God (YHWH) for the worship of pagan Baals and idols. For Jesus, and the Jewish people, worship and devotion of God (YHWH) demanded the exclusion of all other gods, and people who believed in false gods/idols like the Canaanites were ungodly, unholy, and unsanctified/cursed. In today’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus was travelling in the region of Tyre and Sidon. This is Canaanite territory. Thus, it is not a total surprise that Jesus runs into a Canaanite woman. This Canaanite woman’s daughter was possessed by a demon and suffers terribly. She comes to Jesus asking for His help. The image that we see is a painting entitled the Miracle of the Canaanite Woman, by an anonymous Italian artist, from the early 17th century, illustrates today’s story. Since the Canaanites were ungodly, unholy, and accursed, it would not be shocking for a Jewish person to hear Jesus allude to this woman and her daughter “a dog.” In fact, this is how the Jewish people looked at and understood pagans to be; not cultured and civilized like a person, but an unreasonable savage, like an animal or dog. Jewish people often alluded to Gentiles as dogs. Even though this woman is rebuked by Jesus, she persists with faith. Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith!” This is one of the more curious miracles of Jesus, included in the Gospels, particularly because the important statement of faith is made by a non Jewish person: a pagan, Gentile non-believer! As we read through the Gospel of Matthew, only two people are praised by our Lord as having great faith, and both of those people are pagan Gentiles. The first is the Roman centurion, the New Testament’s enemy of God’s people, when Jesus miraculously heals the centurion’s paralyzed servant (Matt 8:5-13). The second is the Canaanite woman, the Old Testament’s enemy of God’s people, whom we hear in this week in the Gospel story, from Matthew 15:21-28. In contrast to their great faith, what does Jesus say about the faith of the Jews? They have no faith. They demand a sign, but they don’t believe. Thus, today’s Gospel once again presents a great contrast: the great faith of a Gentile woman compared to the lack of faith of the people of God. The Church Father Origen, in his commentary on the Gospel, writes, “nevertheless where there was great faith, to her, who because of her base birth in Canaanite land was a little dog, He gave as to a child the bread of the children.” Let us pray for increase in our faith! Construction is proceeding on the new curved driveway to church. Also, welcome back to our students and faculty of St. Joseph parochial school, as you begin the 2017-2018 school year! Durante las últimas semanas hemos estado escuchando las parábolas de Jesús que se encuentran en el Evangelio de Mateo. Esta semana, pasamos de Jesús contando historias a un encuentro de la vida real con una mujer cananea. El detalle que esta mujer es descrita como cananea no tiene un impacto en nosotros, viviendo en el siglo XXI. Sin embargo, para una persona judía, que vivía durante la época de Jesús en el siglo I, este detalle sería muy importante y espantoso. El cananeo proviene del nombre de Canaán. Canaán era el cuarto hijo de Cam, el hijo menor de Noé; Así, Canaán era el nieto de Noé. Canaán fue maldecido por el pecado de Cam (Gén. 9: 20-28). Canaán se convirtió en el progenitor (padre) de los cananeos, también conocidos como fenicios, en griego. Los fenicios eran una

raza de personas que vivían a lo largo de la costa mediterránea, desde Turquía hasta la frontera de Egipto. Así, los cananeos ocuparon la costa de Palestina. Przez ostatnich kilka niedziel słuchaliśmy przypowieści Jezusa z Ewangelii według św. Mateusza. W tym tygodniu opowiemy o Jego spotkaniu z kobietą kananejską. Dla nas żyjących w XXI wieku fakt, iż owa kobieta była Kananejką, ma niewielkie znaczenie. Jednakże dla ludzi współczesnych Jezusowi, z I wieku naszej ery, był to istotny i odrażający szczegół. Przymiotnik „kananejska” pochodzi od imienia Kanaana – czwartego syna Chama. Cham z kolei był najmłodszym synem Noego. Z powodu tego, co uczynił Cham (Księga Rodzaju 9:20-28), Kanaan był przeklęty. Stał się on później protoplastą Kananejczyków, po grecku zwanych Fenicjanami. Fenicjanie byli ludźmi zamieszkującymi wybrzeże Morza Śródziemnego, od Turcji po Egipt. Kananejczycy mieszkali również

w Palestynie. U kresu czterdziestodniowej tułaczki po pustyni, Izraelici dotarli do rzeki Jordan na granicy Ziemi Obiecanej. Jozue wysłał zwiadowców, aby zbadali tę krainę. Odkryli oni „piękną, żyzną ziemię” zamieszkałą przez wiele silnych ras, między innymi Kananejczyków. Kananejczycy byli żeglarzami i kupcami. Ich głównymi miastami oraz centrami handlu były Tyra i Sydon. Ważne, żebyśmy zrozumieli, iż Kananejczycy nie byli Żydami – to pogański naród. Oddawali cześć takim bożkom, jak Baal, Aszerot, Astarte i innym. Dla Ludu Izraela, Kananejczycy byli wrogiem i zagrożeniem. Nie tylko toczyli oni wojny z Izraelem w sensie fizycznym, lecz także religijnym. Stary Testament wielokrotnie wspomina o tym, jak Izraelici porzucają wiarę w prawdziwego Boga (YHWH) na rzecz kultu Baala lub innych bożków. Dla Jezusa i Żydów, wiara w Jedynego Boga (YHWH) wykluczała kult jakiegokolwiek innego bóstwa. Kananejczycy i inne pogańskie ludy były więc przeklętymi bezbożnikami. Z dzisiejszego czytania dowiadujemy się, że Jezus podróżował przez ziemię Kananejczyków. Nic zatem dziwnego, że spotkał jedną z tamtejszych kobiet. Jej córka bardzo cierpiała, bowiem opętał ją demon. Kobieta prosi Mesjasza o pomoc. Dzisiejszą opowieść przelał na płótno anonimowy włoski artysta z XVII wieku – widzicie tu obraz pod tytułem: „Cud kobiety kananejskiej”. Kananejczycy byli ludem przeklętym. Stąd nie dziwi fakt, że Jezus porównał kobietę i jej córkę do psów. Żydzi tak właśnie postrzegali pogan – nie jako ludzi cywilizowanych, ale jak dzikie zwierzęta. Żydzi często porównywali obcych do psów. Chociaż Pan ją odpędza, kobieta wytrwale ponawia prośbę. W końcu Jezus mówi: „O niewiasto, wielka jest Twoja wiara!” Jest to jeden z bardziej intrygujących cudów opisanych w Ewangeliach; szczególnie, że wyznanie wiary pochodzi z ust poganki, nie-Żydówki. Jak wiemy z Ewangelii Mateusza, Jezus chwali wiarę tylko dwóch osób: obie są poganami. Pierwszą osobą jest rzymski setnik -wróg Ludu Bożego w Nowym Testamencie- którego sparaliżowany sługa zostaje cudownie uzdrowiony (Ewangelia Mateusza 8:5-13). Druga osobą jest bohaterka dzisiejszej opowieści (Ewangelia Mateusza 15:21-28): kobieta kananejska, wróg Izraela w Starym Testamencie. W przeciwieństwie do tych dwojga, Żydzi zdaniem Pana nie mają wiary. Oczekują znaku, lecz nie wierzą. Dzisiejsza Ewangelia przeciwstawia więc wielką wiarę poganki kompletnemu brakowi wiary u Ludu Bożego. W swoim komentarzu do tego fragmentu, Ojciec Kościoła Orygenes pisze: „Niemniej, ujrzawszy wielką wiarę ze strony tej, która zrodził lud kananejski i która była niczym pies, dał jej chleba jak Swoim dzieciom”. Módlmy się o to, aby Bóg przymnożył nam wiary! Postępują prace nad nowym podjazdem przed kościołem. Witamy serdecznie wszystkich uczniów oraz pedagogów z tutejszej szkoły parafialnej, u progu nowego roku szkolnego! Pamiętajcie proszę w modlitwie o wszystkich naszych uczniach. Święto Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

By the time you read my article we will have completed the first two days of school, (only 178 left but who’s counting). We had a great couple of days, our children and faculty came back eager to begin and it promises to be a great school year. On Monday, our kindergarten and preschoolers begin. While our youngest knights begin their first day their par-ents are invited to our Boo-Hoo-Breakfast sponsored by our parent club to welcome them into the St. Joseph School and help them with any separation anxiety. In case you did not know, our school mascot is the Knight, (we are the St. Joseph Knights). As the Knights of medie-val time who followed the code of chivalry – we as St. Jo-seph Knights follow our Knights Code which we say each morning after we pray and say the Pledge of Alligence. Our Knight’s Code is: I am Respectful I am Responsible I am Kind I am Safe I am a St. Joseph Knight! While school has just begun, I want to remind our parish families we will still accept enrollment. St. Joseph Religious Education classes begin Sunday,

Sept. 10. Registration for religious education classes will be held: Sunday, Aug. 20 after 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mass and Wednesday, Aug. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. Both sessions will be held in St. Joseph School Centennial Hall, 5641 S. 73rd Ave. Registration is also available by stopping by the school office, or the rectory office, 7240 W. 57th St. For more more infor-mation, email religiouseducation@stjosephsummit.com
