OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM “On the Road to Bethlehem” is a play that is designed to be used as a

preschool or early childhood Christmas play. In this play, children are going to be pretending that they are in Israel back in Bible times, and they are traveling to “meet baby Jesus.” They have heard about the newborn King and are going to worship Him.

One adult role in this play that will be needed is that of a mother (“mama”) traveling with the children. This person will have a bit of a speaking part. This “mama” part can also be split up between multiple adults so that each person only has one small section to memorize and recite.

On the road, as the children are getting tired, one child asks their “mama” (played by an adult, probably a teacher or assistant) to tell the story “one more time” about the birth of Jesus. Following that, the story flashbacks to the story of Jesus being born. The Christmas story is retold with specific children acting out those parts. After that, the narrative cuts back to the traveling children where they sing the chorus of the theme song and say a few short lines. At the conclusion of the play, the travelers finally make it to Jesus where they worship Him. There is also an “optional script” that is included that removes the speaking parts and solely relies on a narrator telling the story.

Throughout the play, there are four parts being told of the Christmas story:

1. The angel coming and telling Mary and Joseph that they will be the earthly parents of God’s Son.

2. Jesus is born. 3. The angels tell the shepherds about Jesus, and they go to worship

Page 4: “on the Road to bethlehem” - PreKPlaysprekplays.com/On the Road to Bethlehem.pdf · a Savior has been born. They are excited to go on a journey to visit this newborn King. Travelers

Him. 4. The Magi bring gifts to Jesus.

Various Scriptures are included in the narrative as much as possible. One

of the goals of the play is that the children will “hide God’s Word in their hearts” as they sing about Him and retell the Christmas story.

There are four songs that are unique to this program that the children will need to learn. There are two other classic Christmas carol songs, “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.”

Narration is included in the program that an adult can read. Children can sing along with the vocal demonstration tracks. Lyric videos are also available that can be played on a screen at the same time as when the children are singing. Total time for the performance is about 20 minutes.

There is a PreKPlays Pinterest page for ideas of props, costumes, etc.

We hope you have fun as you all “travel back in time” and celebrate going to meet baby Jesus!

CHARACTER LIST Narrator: There will be a narrator to read a scripted part throughout the play. This should be an adult such as a school director, teacher, or pastor. This person should dress in regular clothes as they are “outside” of the story. Travelers: This will be the largest group of children. They are going to be Israelite children traveling down the long and dusty road to meet Jesus. Adults, such as teachers and assistants, may also be part of this traveling group.

Costumes: The travelers can wear simple brown tunics on their heads. Simple robes can be made for the children out of brown fabric and cut a hole in the middle for their heads. They could wear these over their special Christmas outfits. *Eight of the children will have very small speaking parts and should be placed in the front of the travelers. Mama: This will be played by an adult female. This could be one of the teachers, assistants or a mother from the class. This person will have a few speaking lines throughout the play.

*Other staff or parents in the play can play the role of the other “adult travelers” who are on the road. They will not have speaking parts, but will sing along with the children as they sing the theme song.

Costumes: They should wear a full-length, plain colored gown (brown, gray tones) over their clothes with a tunic on their head and wear sandals.

Angel #1: One child will play an angel that visits Mary and Joseph.

Costume: This child should wear a full length white gown over their clothes with a halo on their head and possibly angel wings. Mary and Joseph: These two parts are to be played by children in the story.

Costume: Mary and Joseph’s costumes are to be traditional costumes. Angel #2: This is played by one child. Angel #3, #4, #5: These angels will come out and accompany Angel #2 during the narration about the Shepherds.

Costumes: These children will also wear a full-length white gown over their clothes with a halo and possibly wings.

Page 6: “on the Road to bethlehem” - PreKPlaysprekplays.com/On the Road to Bethlehem.pdf · a Savior has been born. They are excited to go on a journey to visit this newborn King. Travelers

Shepherds: Three children will be shepherds.

Costumes: The shepherds are to wear traditional shepherd costumes with tunics on their heads and a staff for each child. Herod: This part can be played by either a child or an adult. This person will enter the stage for the narration about Herod. After Herod sends the Magi to find the new king, this character exits the stage. If the part is played by a child, they can put on a traveler’s robe and re-enter with the next song so that they can have time on the stage.

Costume: This person will need a full-length kingly costume to wear over their clothes and a crown on their head. Magi: Three children will be the Magi.

Costume: The children will need to wear crowns on their heads (with jewels on them) and full length robes over their clothes. If possible, make the robes gold in color. They will also need to be holding a gift for Jesus that can be made by decorating boxes with sequins and jewels. *You will also need a backstage helper to help the characters enter the stage at the appropriate time.

PROPS AND MATERIALS LIST

The setting of this Christmas play is ancient Israel. See below a picture from Israel to get an image in your mind of the rocky, dry terrain that the children will be pretending to walk upon.

Greenery can be placed around the stage area with artificial plants and artificial palm trees if they are available. Israel is a very rocky land, so it would be good to create some kind of a rocky scenery. Of course, how you design the set will be determined by the size of the stage. Just remember not to place any “rocks” where the children could trip over them. Please see our PreK Plays Pinterest page for decoration and prop ideas.

Here are some ideas as to how to make the rocky scenery:

1. Make some rocks out of paper bags that are stuffed, crumpled, and painted gray or a cream color with a bit of brown. The rocks can be placed on the edges of the stage where the children will not be walking.

2. A simple stony road can be created with a piece of brown or white bulletin board paper taped to the floor and paint rock designs on it.

3. Cut out large rock shapes (1 dimensional) out of gray, beige, and white paper and use contact paper over them to place them on the stage floor. These rocks would be one dimensional and would create the “road” or path that the children will be walking ever so slowly on.

There also needs to be a nativity scene. This can be made as simply or

elaborately as you would like. In the middle of the nativity, there needs to be a creche (feeding trough) where baby Jesus (a wrapped doll) will be placed. There should be a large star located on top of the manger scene. You can make a large star easily by taking yard sticks and either nailing them or hot gluing them into a star shape and then wrapping white lights around it. (See Pinterest PreK

Plays page for idea.)

You will need to make or purchase three gifts that the Magi will be holding in their hands. The shepherds will also need to have staffs that they hold.

Page 9: “on the Road to bethlehem” - PreKPlaysprekplays.com/On the Road to Bethlehem.pdf · a Savior has been born. They are excited to go on a journey to visit this newborn King. Travelers

Scene Set-Up Below is a suggested outline of how the stage can be set up for the play. The circles in front of the travelers represent the stony path that can be created by painting stones on brown paper or adhering one dimensional stones onto the stage floor.

SCRIPT

*Travelers will enter the stage and take their places. The remaining characters will be off stage at this point. Narrator: Welcome to our Christmas play! We are excited to share with you a very special story; the story of Jesus’ birth. We invite you to “go back in time” with us as we journey and pretend that we are Israelite children traveling to meet Jesus......the long-awaited King and Savior of the world! These travelers have heard the news, that a Savior has been born. They are excited to go on a journey to visit this newborn King.

Travelers sing song #1: “On the Road to Bethlehem”

(Pretend to be “walking” in place while singing the verse of this song.)

We’re on the road to Bethlehem To worship baby Jesus

We’re on the road to Bethlehem To worship the newborn King.

We love you, baby Jesus

We worship you, our Savior We love you, baby Jesus

We worship you, our Savior today!

OHHH! Child 1: “I’m tired.” Child 2: “When will get there?” Child 3: “When will we see Jesus?” Child 4: “He is the new KING!” All: “Hooray!” Child 5: “This path is rocky.”

Child 6: “My feet are sore.” Child 7: “When will we see Jesus?” Mama: My children, keep traveling. I know the journey is difficult, but we must keep going so that we can worship Jesus. Child 8: Mama, Can you tell us the story “one more time” of Jesus’ birth? Mama: Yes, my child. Here is how this amazing story of God sending His Savior to us happened……. Narrator: “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city named Nazareth.” (Gabriel enters the stage) He came and visited Mary, who was engaged to be married. (Mary

enters the stage). Gabriel spoke to Mary and said, “Greetings, Mary!” But she was scared (Mary gives a frightened face) and tried to figure out what the angel was telling her. The angel told her (angel points to

Mary as if speaking to her) “Do not be afraid. The Lord has found favor with you and has a surprise for you. You will have a son and will name Him Jesus. He will be great and He is the Son of God. He will reign forever and ever.” Mary was still afraid and confused, but she obeyed and was ready to be God’s servant. Narrator: (Joseph enters stage) Joseph heard about what would happen and he too was afraid (Joseph makes afraid face). One day an angel spoke to him in a dream (Joseph lays hands next to his head and

closes his eyes as if he is asleep) and said, “Do not be afraid. This child will be God’s Son. He will save the people from their sins.” When Joseph woke up (Joseph opens eyes and puts hands back by his side) he decided to listen to God.

Mama: And here is what happened next.......... Narrator: “At that time, Caesar Augustus ordered that a census be taken throughout the empire. Everyone had to travel to his own hometown to be counted. So Mary and Joseph traveled (they begin walking very slowly towards the manger scene which is on one distinct side of the stage) to Bethlehem. When they got to Bethlehem, they looked and looked for a place to stay, but there were not any available places. So, they stayed in a place where animals lived. (Mary and

Joseph enter manger scene.) While they were there, Jesus was born into our world. God has sent His Son... for us. If you are able to, turn down the lights low to create the nighttime scene for the song. If you have decorated the star with white lights, it will really stand out. Of course, do not turn the lights all the way out for safety reasons.)

Travelers Sing Song #3: “Silent Night”

Silent night, holy night

All is calm All is bright

Round yon virgin Mother and child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace

Mama: After Jesus was born, there were shepherds who received a special message of good news.

(Shepherds walk out on stage and pretend they are looking over their sheep.) Narrator: “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.” (Angel #2 comes out

on stage) “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” (Shepherds look afraid.) (Angel can begin pointing to the shepherds as if he/she is talking to the shepherds.) But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Angels #3, 4, and 5 walk out

onto stage and join angel #2) “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’” (Angels go to far side of manger and stand.) Narrator: “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’” (Shepherds begin walking slowly toward manger. When they get there, they kneel down.) “So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger.” (Shepherds can find a place next to the manger to sit.)

Travelers sing song #4: “Good News”

The angels came to tell good news

Glory to God above Peace be on the earth

Joy like you’ve never known

Travelers Sing

“On the Road to Bethlehem Interlude” (while they sing the chorus, they are going to pretend to be walking)

We are on the road to Bethlehem,

To worship baby Jesus. We are on the road to Bethlehem

To worship the newborn king Mama: Now I’d better tell you about King Herod the Great. He was a very bad king, and he found out that a new King had been born. And he did not want any other king in His land.” (King Herod walks out on stage. He stands there looking very “kingly” with a stern look on his face.)

15

Page 16: “on the Road to bethlehem” - PreKPlaysprekplays.com/On the Road to Bethlehem.pdf · a Savior has been born. They are excited to go on a journey to visit this newborn King. Travelers

Narrator: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem (Magi

walk in and stand in front of Herod) and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star (the Magi point to

the star that is above the manger) when it rose and have come to worship him.” “When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. ‘In Bethlehem.’ Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I may too go and worship him.’”

But... Herod did not want to worship this new king. The Magi set out searching for this newborn King. (Magi begin walking

very slowly towards manger scene.) They followed the bright star in the sky which led them to where Jesus was. They bowed down and worshiped Jesus. (Magi bow in front of baby Jesus.) Then they gave him their presents: frankincense, gold and myrrh. (Magi put down wrapped

gifts.) These were very expensive gifts.

When they get there, they kneel down.) “So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger.” (Shepherds can find a place next to the manger to sit.)

Travelers Sing Chorus from “On the Road to Bethlehem”

(while they sing the chorus, they are going to pretend to be walking)

We are on the road to Bethlehem, To worship baby Jesus.

We are on the road to Bethlehem To worship the newborn king

Narrator: Now I’d better tell you about King Herod the Great. He was a very bad king, and he found out that a new King had been born. And he did not want any other king in His land.” (King Herod walks out on stage. He stands there looking very “kingly” with a stern look on his face.) Narrator: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem (Magi

walk in and stand in front of Herod) and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?

They bowed down and

gifts.) These were very expensive gifts.

For this tiny child What treasure he might want from me

This Savior meek and mild

Chorus (2x’s) He wants us to love and serve Him

with heart and mind and soul To love one another

It’s His command, I’m told
