News articles are due by October 22 to appear in November’s NewSense.

“So Jacob called the place Peniel, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” (Genesis 32:30)

Genesis 32 is the chapter where Jacob learns that his brother Esau is coming to meet him. Jacob, you might remember, is the one who stole Esau’s rightful birthright from his father, Isaac. Jacob is fright-ened that Esau is coming to kill him.

This scriptural scene is really an-other story of faith. The place Ja-cob names Peniel is the place where he literally wrestles with God. He truly sees the face of God and lives to tell about it.

Jacob “holds his own” with God. Can you imagine that? Would you have ever thought such a thing could happen? Did God “let Jacob persevere”? Did God “hold back” until the last moment for some spe-cial reason? Was there “a gift in the struggle,” do you think?

We all struggle with God whether we know it or not. In fact, if it weren’t for God, we might not have the number of pains and struggles that we now have. Some have said, “With friends like Jesus, who needs enemies?”

Don’t laugh at this – no, don’t—because it is true. God is our Savior and king – but He also takes the form of our divine enemy.

It’s because of Him that we can’t turn away from that needful person on the street or, that family without anywhere to go or, that call in the middle of the night where they just don’t know which way to turn any-more.

We don’t always want to deal with it but, because of Jesus – we must. We cannot turn away.

The Good News is that God never turns away from us. He is a God who “has been there and done that,” and, is always by our side in every situation. Even in the tough times where we have to make hard decisions, He is there to guide us along the way.

Even though we wrestle with Him – and He “lets us win” for a while – eventually what is needful and good will come about, all in His good time. In the meantime, we become stronger for it – the exer-cise is good for us! He gives us quite the work out. Trust in His ways and in the direction He sends us. Put faith in Christ first – and everything else will fall into place.

Every day is a place of Peniel. Keep your eyes clear and your heart open. Then you shall truly see God.

Peace,

Pastor Jim

Time, Talent, and Treasure requests forthcoming this month!

In order to move forward into 2020, we will be sending out the Time, Talent, and Treasure forms for each of you to fill out to help your Council plan for the new year. Please begin to pray about any di-rections you might like to go in OSLC ministry. Why not try something new? Why not make another commitment to something you have been doing for years? All of this makes a difference in the min-istry God provides through you and me.

In the meantime, Mary Alice Nipper is coordinating “Support Meals” which will go to those who have been sick or hospitalized and are in need of a hot meal. She has some forms which were handed out on Sunday, September 22, but if you would like to be a part of this ministry, please call the church office at 282-2313 or Mary Alice at 282-9411. Thank you!

Council

Congregational Meeting Highlights from September 8, 2019

President Todd Stephens opened the meeting with prayer by Pastor Jim at 12:33 pm.

Motion was made to allow the Council to approve the minutes of this meeting at their next monthly meeting. Approved.

Bill Brooks shared information about the need to replace some of the paving in our parking lot. It is required to hire a local engineer to do all necessary testing for the proper plan for replacement of the base underneath the asphalt.

Fuller Paving was chosen out of four companies who were asked to bid in the project.

It was moved and seconded to approve the paving of the parking lot to be funded by the Fern Street Memo-rial Fund. It passed by congregational vote.

Helen Fetterolf discussed the painting project. This is being done by Artebella Painging Company. The com-pany has cut the cost since they are donating their portion back to the cost and only charging the church money to pay the workers who are doing the painting. An anonymous church member has also made a dona-tion to help cover the cost. The narthex, hallways, fellowship hall, and downstairs hallways are being painted. Thanks to the Design Committee for their work on this project.

Ken Loveday mentioned that streaming of services via our website and ROKU might be a possibility. This is being researched as we speak. Adjourned with prayer at 1:12 pm.

Pastor Jim opened with devotions that Kathy Robinson had sent.

All minutes of recent past were approved.

Thank you’s to the Columbarium Committee for a job well done with the Columbarium dedication; Mutual Ministry for all their work on Job Description changes and for the crea-tion for a new staff person (Faith Formation). (All of which were approved); Property Com-mittee and subcommittee for the painting pro-ject and to Property for the baseboards re-placement in the hallways and fellowship hall; Janeen Pennell for subbing for Ken Diehl as Financial Secretary; John Stamm for power washing the sidewalks around church and Dave Soike for painting the office door.

We need a nomination committee to find re-placements for new openings on Council. (See Pastor’s report)

Need nursery assistants – Tammy could use some more snacks for children.

Updates were given on the paving project, that was approved at yesterday’s meeting (9-8-19) by the congregation.

Jay Stafford gave an update of the financial report for a vacationing Gene Maddox.

We welcome a new arrival on Tuesday, September 17!

No, it’s not a baby but a beautiful Yamaha piano!

This gift is given in memory of four departed parishioners who displayed a passion for music, particular-ly in our OSLC parish. They are Martha Herting, Janice Knipp, Barbara Walters, and Roger Bailey. We will be dedicating this wonderful instrument in the Reformation celebration on October 27.

A little information about this piano includes:

Is a Yamaha Clavinova Full-sized keyboard Digital with many helpful features Rosewood finish Never needs tuning Can be programmed to sound like a Yamaha grand piano or a Bosendorfer grand piano. Is lightweight and easily moved. Resides in the choir room but will be used for special services in our Sanctuary.

I am so very happy to share this news with you! We strive to give of our best musically to the Lord here at OSLC. I am certain that this piano will help us in that endeavor! (Already choir members are telling me how it is so much easier to sing with Yamaha – their choir parts are more easily heard.)

OCTOBER!!! One of the best months of the year!

Crisp air, fallen leaves and their pungent smell, hot chocolate, sweaters, the opportunity to shiver! This season makes me feel alive! AND the music associated with it stirs my soul, particularly “A Mighty For-tress Is Our God!”

"Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" with Luther’s Signature

"A Mighty Fortress" is right at the top of the Lutheran hit parade!

Around here we call it the Lutheran national anthem. It has also been called the "Battle Hymn of the Reformation" for its effects in increasing the support for the Reformers' cause. John Jul-ian records four theories of its origin:

Heinrich Heine: "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" was sung by Luther and his companions as they entered Worms on 16 April 1521 for the Diet;

Jean-Henri Merle d'Aubigne : it was sung by the German Lu-theran princes as they entered Augsburg for the Diet in 1530, at which the Augsburg Confession was presented; and

the view that it was composed in connection with the 1529 Diet of Speyer, at which the German Lu-theran princes lodged their protest to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who wanted to enforce his 1521 Edict of Worms.

Taken from Wikipedia: “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”

10

Based on Psalm 46, Luther wrote text and music around 1529 and it was published in 1531 in German. When reading this Psalm, one is struck by the strong images of “though mountains be carried into the sea, and the earth be removed.” Note verse 3 in Luther’s hymn, that we need not fear the hordes of dev-ils and the world’s tyrant because God’s judgment prevails! “One little word subdues him.”

God tells us not to fear (again that wonderful phrase that tells us NOT to be afraid – God has this). In addition to comforting our fears, God is right there with us and is our refuge.

What must we do in response? “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge!” Ps. 46: 10 & 11

Happy October!

Dear Friends,

It is with a grateful heart, I send these thanks to: Pastor Nipper and Melissa for the visits to me in the hospital and NHC and the loan of two Max Lucado books. Thanks for the personal gifts and errands run and the daylong hours spent at my bed-side by a devoted parishioner.

Thanks for the special prayers from the congrega-tion, love and floral gifts, food, beautiful cards and the gift of Holy Communion on a Sunday afternoon by two lay members, and transportation from NHC to home. What a great congregation of which I am proud to be a member for almost 20 years. Thank you.

Also, a special thanks to our compassionate parish nurse for her near midnight home visit when I need-ed her. We are fortunate to have the loving and giv-ing nurse and friend. Pat Wolf

"Thank you" to our OSLC family just does not seem enough for all the prayers, cards, phone calls and financial donations to us for our ex-penses during Ken's recent illness. We were overwhelmed with all the acts of love shown to

us! A special "thanks" goes to Pastor Jim and Melis-sa for all their visits, prayers, love and support dur-ing this time. Believe us when we say God does perform miracles and we definitely felt all your prayers being lifted up for us. Outreach Ministry

God’s Work our Hands!

Thank you to all those who volunteered their time on Saturday, September 14 to put together 20,000 meal kits for Second Harvest Food Bank. We worked with Operation In As Much out of Knoxville. We had more than 50 volunteers that worked on this project. It was a great day that involved youth, adults and vol-unteers that are not members of our church as well.

The day also included a team lead by Jim Malenda that went to several of our parishioner’s homes to do some much needed work. They worked for more than four hours. This was truly a labor of love and we thank them all.

After a pizza lunch a team of 31 put together 300 personal hygiene kits for ARCH and the Johnson City School System homeless program.

God truly used us in a variety of ways to bless others. It was a wonderful day that built a

great deal of camaraderie with all who participated.

Halloween is coming up on October 31 and you know what that means — we need you to do-nate candy for Trunk or Treat and Trick or Treat on Walnut Street. Please bring your candy to the church and place it in the M & M characters in the Narthex. We need all candy by Octo-ber 23. Thank you for helping us with this annual tradition. Typically Trunk or Treat will have more than 400 kids and families attend and there are thousands that come to Walnut Street.

Trunk or Treat - Step Right Up and enjoy an ole’ fashion fair atmosphere at this year’s Trunk or Treat. In the back parking lot we will be serving popcorn, snow cones and cotton candy at this event. You will not want to miss the fun on October 25 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. If you are decorating your trunk, please be set-up by 5:30 p.m.

You are invited to a

Halloween Trunk or

Treat October 25

from 6- 8 pm This annual tradition at our church is one that truly reaches many people within our community. It has proven to be one that so many people look forward to every year. Please consider decorating your trunk, and bring candy that will be used to disperse to the kids who come.

We really need your help on decorating for this event. Signup sheets are on bulletin boards.

Volunteers to help the day of the event. Food preparation is done this day and all through the event.

Help during the event making sure the food is stocked, drink coolers are filled, making sure all the members have candy outside as the kids trunk or treat.

It really is a rewarding way to see how our church is reaching so many people who do not go to our church.

A signup sheet is located on the Outreach bulletin board.

Remember we never know how one event or one

act of kindness will affect someone’s life. Please

consider getting involved. Thanks so much.
