“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens thepowerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted;but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up withwings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”— Isaiah 40:28-31

It’s different for everyone, there comes a time when we realize we’re not what weonce were physically. It manifests itself in different ways: It takes longer to recoverfrom physical activity, weight is harder to lose, you don’t care about losing weightanymore, when you’re kneeling down to fix something it takes six movements toget up instead of 1 or 2… you can make your own list. Even though, as we getolder we lose muscle mass and our body changes, how can we remain strong inbody, mind and soul?

We’re blessed to live in an area where the occasional majestic Bald Eagle soarsoverhead. I never get tired of watching these incredible birds in flight not only because they are amazing but, also because I’m reminded of the song “On EaglesWings” and the passage above from Isaiah.

There is strength that comes from waiting on the Lord as Isaiah says; there isstrength that comes from the words of a friend or a simple kind gesture from astranger. God works in all of these things and finds ways for us not only to survivebut thrive with vitality.

Yes, sometimes it seems Satan is getting the best of us. There are times when it is hard to maintain faith and vitality and when life seems to be going against us.These are the times when our walk with the Lord becomes very REAL! It’s easier totrust God when life is going our way but not so easy when it feels as if the weightof the world is on our shoulders.

Upcoming Preaching ThemesSunday, 8/6 “Empty Hearts, Empty Stomachs”Text Matthew 14:13-21Theme Empty hearts bring crowds of people to seek Jesus while he is in a

deserted place. Jesus fills both their hearts and their stomachs.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) What was the disciples answer to the problem of this crowd of hungry people?2) Is it more difficult to feed someone’s heart or stomach?3) Remember a time when someone fed you and what it felt like.

Sunday, 8/13 “Water and Worries”Text Matthew 14:22-33Theme Jesus sometime meets us in places of worry or fear to strengthen

our faith.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) Why did Jesus send the disciples ahead while he stayed behind?2) What did the disciples first think when they saw Jesus?3) What did the disciples come to believe at the end of the passage?

Sunday, 8/20 “Faith Like a Beggar”Text Matthew 15:21-28Theme The Canaanite woman is not afraid to beg for what she needs from

Jesus. Her humility and great faith lead to her healing.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) What do the disciples think that Jesus should do about the Canaanite woman?2) How does Jesus’ answer to her sound like an insult?3) Have you ever pleaded with Jesus that he would help you or someone else?

Sunday, 8/27 “How to Build a Church”Text Matthew 16:13-20Theme The church is built on the one confession that Jesus is the Messiah,

the son of the living God.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) Who are the crowds saying that Jesus is?2) Who do you say that Jesus is?3) Can Peter’s confession really be enough to build the church on?

THE SERVANT SPIRIT 3

Maybe This Year?Repeatedly, I am struck by how deeply people aretouched by music. How music can communicate in away nothing else can. How God can use music to bringhealing and joy into people’s lives. Maybe this year youwould like to participate in this kind of ministry?

Maybe this year you want to try something new?Maybe this year you want to experience a sense a belonging to a community? Maybe this year you wantto make beautiful music?

The Celebration Choir’s first choir rehearsal will be Monday, September 11th from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Our first Sunday will be on September 17th. Maybe this year?

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the raceand complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to thegood news of God's grace. — Acts 20:24 (NIV)

Good News from the Music Ministry Team!We want to extend a big THANK YOU to all the soundboard volunteers who havebeen so faithful in the past. We appreciate their willingness to serve SOC in thisway. In January, the Church Council voted to hire a permanent sound technician.

Since May, Adam Trelstad, a student at the U of M and a member of SOC filled thisposition. Adam has done a great job helping us upgrade our sound system and runthe sound board for worship. He stepped in to help us bridge the gap this summeras we searched for a more permanent hire.

The good news is that we have found someone to fill this position. His name is Ingram Oyugi. He will start on August 27th by assisting and training with Adam atour Sunday services. Ingram will take over on September 3rd.

Ingram is a student at the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis. He comes to us with a wide range of experiences in live sound, audio mixing andmulti-media presentations. He will graduate with a BA in Media Production in thespring of 2018.

Please take a moment to welcome Ingram to our church and staff. We are excitedto have him on board with us as we continue to make upgrades and enhancementsto the sound system. The music team will continue to work toward “completing thetask of testifying the Good news of God’s grace” here at SOC. Thank you for yoursupport of the music ministry!

God’s peace,

Formed, Reformed, Transformed — Pastor MelissaThis fall we will begin a new sermon series called, “Formed, Reformed, Transformed.” We will begin in Genesis where Scripture tells us we are formed in the image of God. These are not only words of encouragement but also give usa glimpse into the fact that we were created to be in a relationship with the Lordand with other people.

We will continue on to learn about how we have been formed to be God’s chosenpeople and formed into the Body of Christ. We have been blessed so that we mightbe a blessing to others. We have been formed by God to be generous with ourtime, talent and treasures because God has been generous with us.

This October is also the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The church (and we as individual Christians) are constantly being reformed. We are reformedby the Word of God, Reformed by Grace, Reformed by Christ Alone, and Reformedby Faith.

Later in the year we will look at how we are also being transformed by God’s lovefrom the inside out. Many people in the Bible including Joseph, Jacob, Paul and others have experiences with God that lead to a transformed life for them.

Are there areas in your life that you would like God to Reform or Transform? Please bring these areas to God in prayer. God is always listening and is at work in our lives even when we may not see it.

After learning how we are formed in God’s image may we be reformed through thestudy of Scripture and transformed by the love of the Holy Spirit.

Peace, Pastor Melissa

6 THE SERVANT SPIRIT

Your Contributions to Servant of Christare a LifelineIf you’re a regular reader of the church newsletter you know that each month I (Pastor Eric) try to highlight a ministry either locally or somewhere in the world thatyour gifts are impacting.

Though it may seem like a long time ago and half a world away, you might recallthat in April, 2015 a strong earthquake followed by the almost 400 aftershockshook Nepal killing more than 8,460 people and more than 500,000 homes were destroyed.

Your gifts to Servant of Christ help support Lutheran Disaster Response which isoften first on the scene to major natural disasters and last to leave. In addition to providing food and tents for initial relief, seed for food, galvanized sheets forroofing and winterization materials are sent to affected areas like Nepal. Homesare starting to be rebuilt. Masons are being trained to build earthquake resistanthomes; families are receiving technical support and grants for reconstruction.Training in agriculture, livestock support and income generation are happening inremote areas. Support has been given to farmers with seed distribution, irrigationprojects, soil management and ten tractors have also been supplied.

Yes, it’s a big world out there and natural disasters do happen and YOUR GIFTSmake a difference in the lives of REAL PEOPLE and are bringing restoration andhope back into their lives. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND THE INCREDIBLE IMPACTTHE MINISTRY OF SOC IS HAVING AROUND THE WORLD!
