In the life of an Institution sometimes come epoch-making moments when their cumulative academic work takes a quantum leap, gets recognition and makes the institution transcend the conventional to settle into gilt-edged category. The S-VYASA potential to become an institution of global excellence, exhibited by its incessant efforts of four decades at promoting Yoga Education and Research has been recognized and awarded Graded Autonomy and elevation to Category I Deemed to be University status by the University Grants Commission recently. This has gratified us and made us eligible for all the benefits stipulated under Dimensions of Autonomy clause of related UGC Regulations. In effect S-VYASA now retains the privilege of initiating new and innovative programs of study and skill courses, open research parks, incubation centers and University Society linkage centers, and offer its programs of study in the ODL (Open & Digital Learning) mode.

As we are working in all these areas, we have taken up, on a large scale and with zeal, the challenge of firming up ODL mode and establishing a network of Learner Support Centers, as extended academic arms of S-VYASA, all over the country and even abroad. We are working with the mission of taking Yoga Education at the doorsteps of one and all and extending the monumental holistic benefits of Yoga to our learners and to the people at large. This mission is in symphony with the grand vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister for spreading the huge benefits of this invaluable ancient Indian knowledge system to the mankind. He heralded the grandeur of Yoga by his immortal speech at the UNO and successfully steered, the

proposal to make June 21st as the International Day of Yoga among the comity of nations at the UNO. Since that announcement, Yoga has spread its useful wings all over the world and International Day of Yoga (IDY) is today celebrated all over the world attracting the largest number of participants in almost all the countries celebrating IDY event.

In the ODL Scheme we are working on two sets of programs- there are some programs which are ready and are placed on the launch pad for the forthcoming January 2019 Session. Such programs are listed in Group A below. The other set of programs are those that are in different stages of preparation and will be ready for the next cycle of admissions in July / August 2019. The Group B programs in the following list belong to this category:

LearnerSupportCenters(LSCs)

In order to provide individualized academic and administrative support to the ODL Learners, we are establishing Learner Support Centers for the learners to interact with the Academic Counselors and their peer groups, to refer to books in the Library, watch / listen to video / audio programs and interact with the Coordinator of LSC on administrative and academic matters.

The functions and the activities of LSCs are promotion and publicity of S-VYASA Yoga Programs, organization of induction meetings, conduct of academic counselling for theory and practical courses, evaluation of assignments, conduct of term end examinations, organizing course related workshops and seminars and providing library support to the learners.

The LSCs are mostly setup in academic host institutions providing (rent-free) adequate office and counselling / practice accommodation for the LSC; S-VYASA bears capital, recurring and

non-recurring expenditure towards running of the LSC. The LSC functions without causing any hindrance to the normal functioning of the host institution. Programs of S-VYASA are activated on the basis of viability in terms of enrolment, infrastructure and academic expertise (faculty) available for providing support services to the learners at that LSC.

TheResponsibilities will be shared equitably as below

LSC'sResponsibility

Rent free office space to be provided and the availability of Class Room/s on weekends / holidays for holding Yoga practical and theory sessions for the enrolled learner be ensured (UGC condition).• Support for one position of Coordinator

On account of the non-difference (of the Vidya) everywhere (i.e., in all the texts of the different Sakhas where the Prana-Vidya occurs), these qualities (mentioned in two of them are to be inserted) in the other places (e.g., the Kaushitaki Upanishad).

This Sutra deals with Prana Vidya which is very popular these days. The entire Pada is meant for Upasana. Upasana is very inclusive, comprehensive meditation. Different techniques and modes of meditations have come into existence.

Dhaynam is also a similar expression for Upasana. The root of the word Dhyanam is ‘XyE icNtayam! | When a sadhaka objectifies an object of meditation, to continue one’s focus on the same is Dhyanam, much like a crane performs Dhyanam to catch its pray (bk> Xyayit) on the banks of a river. Similar occurrence happens when wild animals hunt their catch; thus, the process of Dhyanam is common to all.

In this context of Upasana, it’s not just getting focused, but doing Dhyanam with divinizing the process of the Dhyanam along with the object of Dhyanam. Upasanam is an activity of mental energy focused on divine, spiritual objects wherein self-discipline, calming the mind, purifications of the emotions, sublimating the intellectual capacity, and commitment to the cause etc become inevitable components. In this sense, all the modern types of Dhaynas come under Upasana. Vedic tradition names the entire section as Upasana

Kanda. Upasana is useful in performance of Yajna, worship and even to follow Sadhana Chatushtaya; Viveka (discrimination), Vairagya (mastery over desires), Shama, Dama etc (tools of mastery over mind) and Mumukshutva (aspiration for wisdom).

In this Adhikarana, the sutra says all Pranopasanas are one. In Brihadaranyaka, some attributions of Prana are invoked; vasishtha (self-controlled), Shreshtha (supreme), Jyeshtha (most respected) etc to qualify and quantify Prana to facilitate the process of Upasana. In Prashna Upanishat, Pranas is addressed as, matev puÇan! r]Sv, protect all of us as mother looks after the children. Prashna Upanishad is mostly dedicated to the science of Prana only. Similarly, many Upanishads present different types of Prana Upasana. All the attributes given in different Upanishads addressing Prana should be considered as one. For example, Devatatta, a scholar residing in a village, even while cultivating, working in the field, playing with children is Devadatta only, without losing his scholarship. Similarly, Prana is used by all living creatures. But, the humans are gifted with more knowledge of science of Prana. Pranayama is a science of breath, only known to humankind. Some animals have been given the ability to breath at a slow rate such as turtles, living longer than humans. It’s possible for human beings also by doing Upasana as advised in different Shastras. With this understanding of Prana Upasana, Pranayama should be practiced by all Yoga Sadhakas.

The biggest and the most comprehensive Yoga and Cardiology meeting in India will be held at Rishikesh, a magnet for spiritual seekers, the “Yoga Capital of the World”, also known as “Dev Bhumi” or the land of the Gods. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas along the banks of the river Ganga, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh is a 100-bedded advanced medical center.

The Cardiovascular Department of AIIMS, Rishikesh will host this conference to bring about a confluence of the latest in modern medicine and ancient healing techniques for today's medical practitioners. The occasion will bring together the Himalayan Masters of Meditation and the world's most famous physician scientists who endeavoured not only to discover the science behind Meditation but to implement it in clinical practice.

The Conference outputs will include a high-level statement including practical guidelines to caregivers of Cardiovascular diseases and how to harness the power of yoga and meditation for rehabilitation and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This would be a historic addition to the science and understanding of the use of Meditation to decrease the mortality of cardiovascular diseases.

This meditation and science conference will bring together the brightest minds of our day, doing scientific research on yoga and meditation's effects on cellular regeneration, longevity, consciousness and health. Internationally recognized speakers will describe their own groundbreaking research, demonstrate models that integrate eastern philosophy and western medicine, and provide practical guidance for the use of these techniques in clinical medicine.

Billions of dollars are needed to combat cardiovascular diseases, which is the biggest killer in the world today. Such a symposium will help determine a unique way of combining the best of modern medicine and age-old Hindu practices that is relevant in the scenario.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,In modern times, management of noncommunicable diseases has become an enormous challenge to the medical fraternity worldwide. It is increasingly being recognized that non-communicable diseases are multifactorial problems and therefore the solutions to these have to be multi-faceted. Evidence based approach is of utmost importance to provide the best possible care for the patients.

Equally important is to develop cost-effective treatments. Modern Medicine, Yoga and other AYUSH systems of medicine approach patient care in their own unique ways. Each system has got its own advantages. Hence it is necessary to explore how these systems of medicine can complement each other in order to provide best solutions for the management of non-communicable diseases.

Hence, we have selected a theme “Yoga as Lifestyle Medicine” for 23rd INCOFYRA. This will make an effort to integrate Indian medicine and Modern Medicine with Yoga as basis for integrative medicine by bringing prominent researchers and doctors from all these fields under on one platform. The focus of 23rd INCOFYRA will be on reversal of Diabetes and Heart disease with Yoga as lifestyle intervention.

We welcome you all to our Prashanti Kutiram campus.

ConferenceObjectives1. To disseminate the research findings in the field of

Arogyadhama Success StoriesSectionF:Type1DiabetesMellituswithDiabeticRetinopathy, Hypothyroidism and Obesity

She was just a baby, three years old, and the darling child of all at home. Yet it was going to be an uphill task for her going through childhood and then living her normal adult life. Reason? She was afflicted with juvenile diabetes or Type 1 diabetes. About 90% of people under 25 years are affected with diabetes. It is the most common metabolic disease in youngsters. Over 20 years later Shanthi, now 25, came to Arogyadhama in January 2015, with an overweight problem and mild back pain. She was suffering from hypothyroidism for two years. Last year she got laser treatment done in her left eye for retinopathy.

She was earlier working as an engineer. But she opted to break away for the time being and turn into a homemaker. That was three years ago. She is now under considerable stress because of her health issues. This, in turn, has led to fatigue.

The diagnosis was Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypothyroidism, and Obesity.

During her stay of three weeks with us, she underwent yoga practices based on Integrated Approach to Yoga Therapy which is a special yoga module prepared for diabetes mellitus in our campus based on yoga research.

She was made to practice breathing exercises, sukshma vyayama and yogasanas like Ardha matsendrasana, vakrasana, trikonasana, parivrittakonasana etc along with kriyas (Yogic external detoxification techniques) like vamana dhouti (cleansing upper gastrointestinal tract) and laghu sankha prakshalana (intestinal cleansing technique). She was also taught Abhyantara kriyas like agnisara and nauli kriya and made to practice them to the extent possible to help her diabetes issue. A diabetic diet

was planned according to her needs which included boiled /raw vegetables as a major portion to help reduce her weight. In order to give total rest to her body and mind, she was made to practice Cyclic Meditation and MSRT (Mind Sound Resonance Technique). Counselling sessions were held for her to help sublimate her depression. She was made to understand the karma yoga concept to overcome the unnecessary stress. Lectures on lifestyle and dietary management were organised for her benefit. Thus keeping in mind her overall health condition, she was put through a planned yoga module most appropriate for her.

Parameters:During her stay of three weeks, her blood glucose levels came under control. Her insulin was reduced by 39 units. She was feeling cheerful and energetic by the end of 3 weeks.

SectionF:Type2DiabetesMellitus

Mr. Rajeshwar (name changed), aged around 38, was a known case of Type 2 diabetes mellitus for five years and was managing with regular medication and a good diet. When he came to Arogyadhama in May 2015, he complained of poor blood glucose control, disturbed sleep and loss of weight having lost about 6 kg in the past three to four years. He had a history of infections in genitals once in 2004 and again about 4 years ago. He reported increased hunger for one week and frequent urination. There is a contributing stress history related to family and business. No history of any other major illnesses or surgeries in the past. The diagnosis was Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

During his week-long stay at Arogyadhama, he underwent Yoga Practices based on the integrated approach to Yoga therapy which is a special yoga module prepared for Diabetes mellitus ailments in our campus based on yoga research.

He was made to practice breathing exercises, sukshma vyayama and yogasanas like Ardha matsendrasana, vakrasana, trikonasana, parivrittakonasana, etc., along with kriyas (Yogic external

He was taught Abhyantara kriyas like agnisara and nauli kriya and was made to practice them to the extent possible for his T2DM. A diabetic diet was planned according to his needs which included boiled/raw vegetables as a major portion. In order to give total rest to his body and mind, he was made to practice Cyclic Meditation and MSRT (Mind Sound Resonance Technique). Pranayama like nadishuddhi and brahmari helped

relax him. He practised sleep technique for his disturbed sleep. He was made to practice Viparitakarini kriya (viparitakarini with wall support with deep abdominal breathing for 5 rounds, A-kara chanting for 5 rounds, kapala bhakti for 5 rounds and Ashwini mudra) to overcome his frequent urination issue. Counselling sessions helped sublimate his suppressed emotions. He was made to understand the karma yoga concept to overcome the unnecessary stress that he developed in himself as he was a businessman. Lectures on lifestyle and dietary management were organised. Thus,

keeping in mind his overall health condition, he was put through a planned yoga module most appropriate for him.

Parameters: A remarkable aspect of his recovery was that within just one week his post-prandial blood sugar fell from 462 mg/dl to 301mg/dl, that is, a fall of 161 mg/dl as shown in the table below. Other parameters also are given below:

7. Prashaanta-vaahitachitta: A mind that is in an optimal mental state, a perfect moment of awareness with a spontaneous and effortless flow of activity. Such activity is autopoietic or self-generated and autotelic or an end in itself. Nothing more is desired or feared. One becomes naturally creative and innovative. One has a loving presence while interacting with others and the world. It is a natural flow of a perfect life! In such a life, one is enlightened or inspired by all things, As the Zen saying goes:

“To study the Buddha way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things. To be enlightened by all things is to free one’s body and mind and those of others. No trace of enlightenment remains, and this no-trace continues endlessly. Dogen Zenji (1200-1253).”

Goa, Kala Academy, Nov 12-13: The International Conference on Yoga and Public Health, convened by the Government of India’s Department of AYUSH, was treated as of the highest national importance and attended by Smt. Mridula Sinha, Governor of Goa, also the state’s Chief Minister, three central Government Ministers, Shri Suresh Prabhu, the Hon’ble Minister for Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation, Dr Satya Pal Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Human Resource Development, and Goa’s own Shri Shripad Naik, the Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of AYUSH, who presided over both the Inaugural and Valedictory Sessions. In addition, two of India’s highest-level spiritual personalities attended the conference, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Guruji, Founder of ‘The Art of Living’, Bengaluru, who addressed the Inaugural in

his usual pertinent and well-informed style, and Shri Kamalesh D Patel (‘Daaji’), President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission, who spoke movingly at the Valedictory. In addition, the Secretary of Department of AYUSH, Dr Rajesh Kotecha, attended all sessions and emphasized the continuity of vision and purpose of Yoga and Yoga research for the entire conference.

The stated overall purpose of this annual Department of AYUSH conference was to review all aspects of research on applications of the AYUSH systems of medicine to Public Health, and brainstorm to envision ways that India can utilize this treasured system of traditional medicine to combat, and hopefully resolve and cure, the current epidemic of chronic diseases. Towards this laudable aim, it was significant that four members of S-VYASA were invited to prominent roles in the conference. Indeed,

one presentation mentioned that 10% of world-wide research on Yoga has originated from our institution, S-VYASA, emphasizing the foundational roles that our scientists have played in all levels of Yoga research.

The four S-VYASA scientists, Chancellor, Dr H.R. Nagendra, Dean & Arogyadhama Medical Director Dr R. Nagarathna, Anvesana’s Joint Director Research, Professor N.K. Manjunath, and Department of Yoga and Physical Science’s Distinguished Professor Alex Hankey, all had prominent roles to play as the conference progressed. Guruji, Chancellor Nagendra, was Chairperson of the first technical session, Yoga for Public Health, Emerging Trends and Researches, to which Dr Nagarathna made a highly significant presentation on “Yoga for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes Mellitus”. That session was also addressed by

India’s Consultant on Traditional Medicine at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Dr Geetha Krishnan, who spoke on “WHO’s Strategies for Yoga and Public Health”, which he is personally promoting, in light of the tremendous advantages that they offer in the field of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Dr I.V. Basavaraddi, a former student of Guruji’s, who is now Director of the Moraji Desai National Institute of Health (MDNIY), New Delhi, (the institution responsible for all on-the-ground organisation in Goa) presented a Review of Yogic Literature and Research Papers. It was he who described the remarkable extent of S-VYASA research in this field. After that first morning, Guruji Nagendra and Dr Nagarathna departed for a meeting in Singapore, which will be reported later.

Women, and III, Yoga as a Preventive Medicine, Distinguished Professor Dr Alex Hankey Chaired the Technical Session IV devoted to Yoga for the Geriatric Population, where several excellent presentations were made on Yoga’s benefits for the elderly. Dr Hankey emphasized that the last couple of years of life are those where most of a person’s lifetime medical expenditure is concentrated, particularly if they spend significant periods of time in hospital, and in Intensive Care (ICUs). If Yoga’s known benefits to this area can be substantially proven, then the whole world will be able to take advantage of its huge cost benefits. The Antaranga Yoga system of Transcendental Meditation is scientifically proven to reduce hospital costs by 50% averaged across all categories of pathology. Proofs of similar cost reductions are urgently needed for Yoga systems teaching the Bahirangas, Yoga angas 1 to 4.

The next series of Technical Sessions were V, Yoga for Cardiac Rehabilitation, VI, Yoga for Palliative Care, and VII, Yoga for Occupational Health, addressed by S-VYASA’s Professor N.K. Manjunath on Yoga’s use in Prevention and Management of Hazards of Occupational Health, e.g. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), on which a series of S-VYASA studies of coal miners in Orissa have recently been published. COPD is widespread in old age, not just among coal miners, for whom it is particularly acute. It greatly decreases quality of life, can increases susceptibility to pneumonia, often called the ‘Old Man’s Friend’ since the departing soul usually experiences less prolonged pain and discomfort. Yoga has a strong potential role to play in the workplace, and industry is being encouraged to learn about its great cost benefits. Last was Technical Session VIII, Yoga for Mental Health, an area in which India’s National Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience, NIMHANS, has made tremendous contributions, particularly through its present Director BN Gangadhar, former Dean of Life Sciences at S-VYASA. Dr Bindu

Kutty, NIMHANS Professor of Neuroscience, was scheduled to make the first presentation to that session on “The Meditative Brain”.

Simultaneously with the many Technical Sessions on the afternoon of 12 November, a Brainstorming Session, Chaired by the Assistant Secretary, Department of AYUSH, was held in a Conference Room in the nearby Taj Hotel, where VVIP conference guests were staying. That session aimed to expand the vision of how to make Yoga most relevant to public health needs in India today. Because of their extensive innovative experience, S-VYASA scientists were able to make important contributions, particularly based on recent experiments using microarrays to study changes at the subcellular level, performed in Anvesana’s Chemical Laboratory equipped by grants from the Government of Karnataka.

S-VYASA scientists have made substantial contributions in this area, the recent results of Dr Ragavendra Samy and Professor Ramesh Mavathur suggesting that Yoga practice vastly increases the adaptability of the human nervous system, and its efficiency of function and regulation. Such improvements of efficiency of regulation have also been seen by Dr Alex Hankey in seven studies performed since 2012 and have resulted in the identification of an important new research measure for Yoga studies – reduction of variance pre-post Yoga interventions in Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), which should now be tested in all Yoga research, as Dr Hankey emphasized to the Brainstorming session.

In conclusion, the International Conference on Yoga for Public Health was a great success. We at S-VYASA, were enabled to play significant roles in helping report important new research results and trends, to identify new directions for future Yoga research, and to set new tests and criteria for judging the success of research on Yoga and its applications.

Three Dimensional DevotionDevotion is a noble and divine emotion. Emotion is an overflow of powerful feelings. Feelings are available in every heart. Heart is present in every person. Therefore, every throbbing heart has feelings. They are both positive and negative. Some feelings are present in some and some are absent in some other people. The one feeling which is present in every heart is LOVE. Whom you love, when you love, where you love, how you love, the language of love, the intensity of love, the activities of love may change, from person to person. But love is never absent in any human heart. Love basically is ego centric

and body centered. This love is seen as love of life. When life is in danger man prays with fervor to the almighty for protection. And this is Aarta Bhakti, like that of Gajendra. Next it is prayer and love for the protection of self-respect like that of Droupadi. Next we evolve to encash our devotion for fulfillment of desires such as, Kuchela. But unfortunately this Artharthi Bhakti is very often not completely fulfilled. Sometimes some desires are left unfulfilled. However much Arjuna pleaded with Krishna to save the life

of Abhimanyu, the request was not complied with. When man experiences success and failure in the fulfillment of desires, he begins to make enquiry for the reasons. And that investigation with devotion is Jignyasu Bhakti like that of Uddhava. After the thorough investigation the devotee ascends the peaks of Jnana Bhakti such as Prahlada. This ascent is called Parinama Bhakti or Devotion of Evolution.

Thus while growing to the top what attitude is present towards the god is known as Bhavana Bhakti or Attitudinal Devotion. Yashoda, Dasharatha and such devotees have the love of a parent to the deity. This is Vatsalya Bhakti. Arjuna and Kuchela have the love and devotion of a friend towards Krishna. This Sakhya Bhakti. Anjaneya loved Ram as a master. And this is called Dasya Bhakti. The highest of all attitudes is Madhura Bhavana like that of Radha. This attitudinal devotion is the second dimension.

The third dimension of devotion is worship. It is practical translation of the devotion in action. This activity may be different from each other. One serves, another sings, yet another dances. And some others may clean the places of divine presence such as temples. Everybody is endowed with a gift and that gift, in its perfect form is offered at the altar of divinity as a service, it is real worship. And this is the third dimension.

The three dimensions thus are Parinama Bhakti, to take us to the top; Bhavana Bhakti or Attitudinal Devotion to sweeten our hearts and Anushthana Bhakti to translate our devotion in into practical worship.
