TEAMWORK! Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes is truly a team effort. Some of the team may be more visible than others, but there are many, many important team members! Whether the team part is as a donor, volunteer, staff member, board member, client or a com- bination of those, SKW would not exist without any one branch of this team! Teamwork is at the heart of great accomplishment! Teamwork maximizes abilities, allowing the organization to feed off the strengths of the volunteers. Teamwork maximizes assets - The greatest asset in a non- profit organization is not the finances, not the property and not the building. The greatest asset in any and all nonprofit organi- zations is the people. Everyday people are volunteering and giving to nonprofits. Think about this for a moment. How does a nonprofit raise funds? Through various avenues with people. How does a nonprofit accomplish various tasks? Through vari- ous avenues with people. The key to teamwork and nonprofit success is centered in the people. The people make things happen within the organization. Where would Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes be without the volunteers and the people in- volved? SKW would simply cease to exist without the people. Come and be a team player!!! Whether by donating monetarily, with food for either the Client Choice Pantry or Project Back- pack or by volunteering, you can make a difference in someone else’s life and at the same time be richly blessed. Volunteers are needed to stock shelves, assist clients with paperwork and selecting groceries, and pack backpacks. We especially need volunteers for three hours a day to assist the van driver with pickups and lifting 20 to 30 - pound boxes. In addition, SKW is in need of volunteers to do data entry in Excel, answer the phone and schedule appointments and/or write thank you notes. Any amount of time is appreciated, from an hour a month on up! Come see what we are all about! “SKW OUTREACH” April 2014 Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes, Inc. TEAMWORK!

Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes is truly a team effort. Some of the team may be more visible than others, but there are many, many important team members! Whether the team part is as a donor, volunteer, staff member, board member, client or a com-bination of those, SKW would not exist without any one branch of this team! Teamwork is at the heart of great accomplishment!

Teamwork maximizes abilities, allowing the organization to feed off the strengths of the volunteers.

Teamwork maximizes assets - The greatest asset in a non-profit organization is not the finances, not the property and not the building. The greatest asset in any and all nonprofit organi-zations is the people. Everyday people are volunteering and giving to nonprofits. Think about this for a moment. How does a nonprofit raise funds? Through various avenues with people. How does a nonprofit accomplish various tasks? Through vari-ous avenues with people. The key to teamwork and nonprofit success is centered in the people. The people make things happen within the organization. Where would Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes be without the volunteers and the people in-volved? SKW would simply cease to exist without the people.

Come and be a team player!!! Whether by donating monetarily, with food for either the Client Choice Pantry or Project Back-pack or by volunteering, you can make a difference in someone else’s life and at the same time be richly blessed. Making a Difference

An Unexpected Blessing—SKW owns two ve-hicles used for picking up daily donations, a box truck and a van. One day when our driver, Brenda, was starting to get gas, some-one also at the pumps said that she wanted to pay for our gas. She said she had been meaning to send in a donation, so instead, spotting our van, paid for the fill-up!

Kohl’s Associates come every Tuesday morning to help pack the backpacks.

This is on their day-off, giving up their own personal free time. They have been doing this for three to four years! Like their logo says, “Expect great things!”

So the next time you are in Kohl’s, please acknowledge their service

to the community!

It costs $7.80 to fill each backpack each week!

This includes the cost of the actual backpack at the beginning of the

school year.

Project Backpack Summer Survival Wish List

Currently we are serving 700 students each week through Project: Backpack.. We consider it a great honor to be able to provide this service to Wilkes County Students. We are asking for your continued support in making this a reality for

the children.

As SKW winds down the Project: Backpack for the school year, we have a cou-ple of items we still are in dire need of to complete the student summer bags. We still need 700 washcloths and 7000 individual bandaids! (Walmart carries an 18 pk of washcloths for approximately $5, a 100-pk of bandaids for $3.) Any quantity you can donate whether one or more, will be greatly appreciated! Many of our other health & beauty items were donated through a Ventures Grant with the United Way of Wilkes. Please have these donations to us by

May 1, so we know what we still need to order.

Another fun item for the children is activity/coloring pages or books.

Any church that would like to contact us regarding their VBS schedule for the summer may do so by May 1 and we will also include this info in the bag of

goodies!

Thank you for considering collecting these items or making a monetary dona-

tion for the purchase of these items for Project Backpack and Summer Survival.

Help a child carry home hope!

Mission The mission of Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes, Inc. (SKW) is to “feed the hungry in Wilkes County”. Methods used in accomplishing this are the Client Choice Pantry and Project: BackPack.

Our Programs

Client Choice Pantry Program: The client

choice pantry opened officially in November 2006. The pantry is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday by appointment. Clients are able to shop, se-lecting their preferred food choices for themselves with the guiding hand of one of our many volunteers. This helps to give our clients a sense of dignity in asking for help. In the last fiscal year our pantry as-sisted 5,637 families by providing 271,476 pounds of food and other items. The value of the product that was given away equaled $450,650.

Project: Backpack: The BackPack program

started in December 2005 to help feed children who are at-risk of going home to little or no food in the house. Each week every child receives 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and snacks that are easy to prepare (and jarred peanut butter approx every 6 weeks) at a cost per child of approximately $7.80. The School Coordinator meets one-on-one with them and packs the food into their backpacks for them to carry home. During the 2012-2013 school year we were able to assist an average of 672 chil-dren weekly. SKW packed 22,713 bags at a cost of $177,161. Our goal each year is to serve at least 10% of the children receiving free and reduced lunch at school. We met our goal this past year.

Management and Staff The Board of Directors for Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes is served by ten to twelve volunteer mem-bers. SKW has 1 salaried position, 4 part-time hourly positions, plus a network of volunteers. The combined paid positions are the equivalent of 3.1 full-time employees. Payroll expenses are just 7.3% of our budget.

Volunteers Last fiscal year, our priceless volunteers clocked an impressive 8,720 hours.

Funding Our budget was $228,484 for monetary donations, over half of this was donated by individuals and churches, the remaining came from the United Way, grants and fundraisers.

The food and other non-cash donations were valued at $655,532. This resulted in a total SKW budget of $884,016 for 2012-13.

Who We Serve We service all of Wilkes County.

Financial Statement Our Form 990 financial statement is available for review by appointment.

Our Annual Statistics
