TCR CHAMPIONS 2016 NEWS HOME DRIVERS TEAM

The end of the season is always a time for taking stock, which is a delicatetask when you are dealing with a recently established business. In our case,2016 was only the second year since the inception of the TCR concept. Are we happy with the way our business is developing? The answer can only be: yes we are!

In less that 24 months the initials TCR have become very popular withmotorsport insiders and fans, while the number of series that have adoptedthe TCR technical regulations has grown from three in 2015 to eleven. Thisfigure will expand to sixteen by the beginning of next year and is bound togrow even further in the following months. One of our goals is to see TCR cars racing in all five continents within thenext two years. A goal that is not out of reach and one that would recreate aglobal Touring Car community for the first time in over twenty years.

The success of TCR can also be measured by the number of brands that havedecided to build cars for their racing customers. They were five last years, eight in 2016 and at least two more will begin racing in 2017.

However, what is more impressive is looking at the statistics of the seasonthat has just come to and end (see pages 32/34). TCR cars have competed in 141 races, reaching a huge total of 1589 starts. A stunning 289 drivers – including 9 ladies – of 32 nationalities took part inTCR races. And 82 of them scored at least one race victory.

Striking, isn’t it? And this was only our second year…

Best wishes from us to the whole TCR community for a happy and flourishingnew season!

THIRDPAGE

As the 2016 season comes to an end, we canlook back on what has been a successful yearfor TCR. This year has seen the successfullaunch of new regional and national

championships, including arguablythe strongest of them all in TCR

Germany, whilst there havebeen announcements and

launches of exciting newbrand involvements. The concept continues toprovide us with newtalent, with the nextgeneration of stars risingthrough the ranks. In

Josh Files and FranciscoMora, for example, TCR has

produced worthy champions ofGermany and Portugal, who are

surely destined for big things.Next year, we already have numerous

highlights to look forward to. The addition ofAudi and KIA to the grid will raise the levelfurther, not least because they are arguablytwo of the strongest additions to the TCRstable since its inception. With Audi, the excitement comes because ofits huge and respected history in deliveringsuccessful motorsport projects. And who couldargue with the heritage that Audi has intouring car racing?

That TCR ended up being successfully chosenfor the first foray of the ever-growing KIAbrand into Europe is testament to how TCR hasprovided the right platform and scale at theright time. There is also the exciting prospect of TCRdeveloping in new and old regions for touringcars. Having Scandinavia on board isundoubtedly a major coup for TCR, and theseries could grow to rival Germany in terms ofits quality. The addition of a new regionalseries in the Middle East is also an intriguingone. Now we just need TCR to go on to crackAmerica…

Stefano Comini became the 2016 TCRInternational Series champion inMacau after a hard-fought battlewith his Leopard Racing teammateJean-Karl Vernay and the two Craft-Bamboo Lukoil drivers James Nashand Pepe Oriola. It was a familiarsituation for Comini – he won the2015 title in much the same way –but he admits that he hadn’t beenexpecting the additional pressure ofdefending his crown. “I felt quite emotional when I wonthe title as I felt more pressure thanlast time. I wasn’t so positive at thestart of the weekend, as it has been

really difficult all year between Craft-Bamboo Lukoil and Leopard Racingbut I have to say that I think we arethe best team with the best cars and,of course, the best drivers!” Comini is one of the biggestcharacters in the TCR paddock, alarger-than-life figure who alwaysseems to have a twinkle in his eye.He is the first to admit that hissometimes unpredictable behaviorcan cause issues, but is equallyquick to heap praise on those whosupport him.“The title isn’t only my victory – it’sfor everybody; for me, Jean-Karl, allthe Leopard team and VolkswagenMotorsport. At the start of the year,

we had quite a difficult car. Webegan slowly and we had a lot ofproblems, but the work everyone didwas really amazing. I want to thankmy wife Roberta who has supportedme every step of the way, but to behonest, I have so many people tothank it’s like a book. My engineerCharles Hodge, who did the samekind of psychological support workthat my wife was doing; you knowthat it’s sometimes quite hard towork with me because I can be a bitspecial, but Charles did a great job.Huge thanks to René Verbist, toClaudio Berro and to Vincent Vossefrom Leopard Racing; they chose mefor this season and I think they

Pierre-Yves Corthals is not anunknown face in touring car racing. The 41-year-old Belgian has underhis belt a long and successfulcareer, which he started in Renaultmono-brand series, taking fivetimes the Belgian title and once theEuropean one before becoming aregular contender in theinternational touring car scene. TheLiège-born has gained for himselfthe reputation of a fast and toughdriver, something which seems atodds with the gentle nickname of‘Pilou’ by which he is known in thepaddock. Having embraced the TCRconcept since the very beginning,Corthals has come a close second in

the inaugural edition of the TCRBenelux, but is also the first winnerof the TCR Trophy Europe. “I have to admit that the TCRTrophy Europe was not even athought at the beginning of theseason. Together with DG SportCompétition, our goal was to findthe budget to run in TCR Benelux, then to find a car different from themajority of models available, and wewent for the Opel Astra. We startedthinking about the TCR TrophyEurope once we saw we were wellplaced in the standings and weplanned to go to the Nürburgringand then Jerez. Eventually thingsturned out well. It takes onechampion to start writing thehistory of a new series and it’s nice

to be the one!”Giving the Opel Astra its first TCRlaurels must have been anotherreason of satisfaction. “Of course, and I think it was greatalso for Opel to win this firstTrophy, as they did not have aneasy start with the Astra. In ourcase, I can say that it was the hardwork starting from scratch that haspaid off. We were able to improvethe car race after race, and I wasvery happy with how it worked. Imust thank DG Sport Compétition fortheir great work and especially ourengineer Lionel Hansen, who is verymeticulous. We also could rely onperfect support from Opel Motorsportengineers.”How does an experienced touring

On top, I love thepossibility to race in differentcountries and different series withthe same car. Creating a EuropeanTrophy within the existing series isalso a terrific and cost-effectiveoption, but in longer-term, itwould be worth having a trueEuropean Series on its own.”What are your plans for 2017?“It will depend on the budgetavailable. The HongKong based driver – a multipleChina Touring Car Champion – tookthe title at the wheel of a LiquiMoly Team Engstler Volkswagen Golfand was quick to praise the teamfor his success.

“I have to say that I’m very happyto win the title and I want to thankmy sponsor, my team for doing agreat job all year and my engineerfor giving me such a good car. TheTCR Asia series is very well organizedand I was able to have some reallygood fights during the season. I’mvery satisfied with the result.”“This was the first year for me inTCR Asia after racing in the HongKong Touring Car Championship and,of course, the China Touring CarChampionship where I was championthree times. One of the enjoyable

things about this year was the factthat I was able to fight with driversfrom other countries, like Tin Sritraifrom Thailand and the guys fromMalaysia which has been really goodexperience.”The races in Sepang meant the TCRAsia competitors were able to raceagainst the TCR International Seriesregulars. This meant Yan and theothers were able to benchmark theirperformances against some far moreexperienced Touring Car drivers andthe champion was clearly a fan ofthe opportunity.

Stéphane Lémeret by Alfredo Filippone

The TCR Benelux series could nothave a better ambassador as amaiden champion: StéphaneLémeret is not only one ofBelgium’s top drivers, he is also aninfluential and respected journalist. After spending most of the lastdecade competing in GT racesaround the world, the Brussels-borndriver was a little bit worried aboutgoing back to touring car racing, but his campaign with the HondaCivic run by Boutsen Ginion Racingwas crowned with success. “It’s nice to win a title, and I wasn’texpecting that outcome. At thebeginning of the season, and afterso many years in GT, I was a bit

sceptical about going back to front-wheel drive cars and in acompetition where close fighting isthe rule and you have a lot ofyounger guys around, but thingseventually went well. The challengefor me, personally, was to get usedto so much torque to the frontwheels and to a longer turboresponse; also to get to learn how towarm up rear tires, especially inBenelux weather, but I could copewith everything…” What were the keys of yoursuccess? “First of all, the car and the team. The Honda Civic TCR, I think, is definitely the best road car in itsclass, so JAS had a very good baseto work from, and Boutsen Ginion

Racing is a very professional team. Then, I think I was wise enough tostay cool, even when things on thetrack started to become hot. I proved I had the pace to be withthe front-runners, but I played the card of consistency, avoidinguseless risks and aiming at scoring points.”You were also helped by some starteammates stars such as TiagoMonteiro and Norbert Michelisz…“For sure. This wasn’t the initialplan, as Honda rather wanted tohave celebrities at my side, forimage-building purposes. It thenturned out that it was easier to getHonda drivers from other series and, yes, it helped, especially Norbi whoreally impressed me!”

What do you think of the TCRconcept and the Benelux series? “The idea behind TCR is simply great. These cars are fun to drive andproduce a great show to watch. Allthis for a cost that is immenselycheaper than other top touring carseries. TCR Benelux has been quiteinnovative, introducing a format witha longer race and two drivers per car,who then compete alone in twosprint races each. It’s a bit weirdscoring the points gained by yourteammate while you have beenwatching, but I understand thephilosophy behind it and the need toreduce costs.”Will we see you again in TCR nextyear? “Why not? It would be nice to makesome outings in the Benelux series,to sport the #1 I am entitled to, andI also would love to race in a coupleof the stellar events of the TCRInternational…”

Josh Filesby Andrew Abbott

Josh Files is not a normal British tintop star. The 25-year-old fromNorwich in England has beencrowned as the first-ever ADAC TCRGermany champion, arguably one ofthe most competitive TCR seriesthere is at the moment.Having clinched the 2013 RenaultUK Clio Cup title, Files could havelooked at following many of hiscounterparts into the British TouringCar Championship. But he chose notto, instead taking on Clio races inEurope in 2013 and 2014, beforefunding issues prevented himcompeting regularly in 2015.When the TCR concept wasannounced in mid-2014, it was theideal platform for Files to getinvolved with, and he believes its

timing couldn’t have been better.“It was perfect timing,” said Files.“In the UK you’ve got the Clio Cup,and then British Touring Cars, andthe budget gap between them is justridiculous. TCR is actually a similarprice to the Clio Cup UK, but the carsare faster.”Files’ achievements in TCR Germanycame despite changing car threetimes over the course of the year.Having planned to race the new OpelAstra TCR at the start, that plan wasquickly changed following a briefshakedown in the car in Bahrain.Target Competition was able to re-hire a SEAT, which they had earliersold for the first round, beforehiring another León for the secondround of the season at theSachsenring.Realising that chopping and

changing cars was not going to bethe way to take the title, the teamfinally settled on the Honda Civic, inpart due to the rapid two-weekdelivery promised by car builder JASMotorsport.“Every car was different, and then wegot the Honda. I didn’t even test theCivic before Oschersleben. But I’mhappy and relieved to say that it’sone of those cars that absolutelysuited my driving style from the verystart; it just clicked for me, and I wason pole by more than half a second. Iactually won both races on the road, even from the reverse grid, but one ofthem got taken away from mebecause the car went down on theground three seconds too late. It’s anincredible car.”Files is still working on his plans for2017, but he is clear that taking to

By the end of 2010 he had stoppedracing. Five years later the name ofRoberto Colciago resurfaced. Andwhat a comeback it was! Eight racewins, the TCR Italy title and a victoryin the TCR International Series atSepang. Why did you decide to return toracing after such a long break? “To tell the truth, I wouldn’t havetaken that break. But for a number ofreasons the conditions to continue ata good level were not there, whichpushed me to stop. However, I havemaintained a friendly relationshipwith JAS, and one day MaurizioAmbrogetti and Alessandro Marianitold me they had a Civic TCR in 2015specs that I could drive in some races.

It started like this, and eventually weraced in the whole season instead…” A season that culminated with theItalian title; did you expect such aresult? “I would be lying by saying that I didnot expect to win at least some races.I knew the car was good, because Iused to shake down the JAS-built carsbefore they were delivered tocustomers. And I also knew that Iwould be working with professionalpeople. There were all the ingredientsto do well, so I focused on improvingmy physical form as I haven’t racedfor some time. I was not sure I couldwin the title, but I was confident Icould give it a go. Eventually we wonat the end of a season that was morecontested than it appeared.” Then you were given the opportunity

to take part in Sepang, and youwon?“Although I have followed thedevelopment of the Civic TCR andspent many hours at its wheel, I mustadmit that Sepang was a totallyunexpected surprise. I was told by JASthat there was a possibility to makean appearance in the InternationalSeries, but I did not think of Malaysia.I left in a hurry the day after I hadclinched the Italian title, knowing thatGiancarlo Bruno would be my raceengineer, and he knows a great dealabout the Civic and the series. We hada few issues in practice, but as weknow the car thoroughly we knew howto solve them, and we were able to befast straight away. The level of theInternational Series is much highercompared to the Italian championship.

Francisco Moraby Pedro Gil de Vasconcelos

Francisco Mora was crowned as thefirst ever champion for TCRPortugal at the end of abreathtaking season. Although thenumber of competitors for this firstseason was always limited to eight, competition on the track was veryclose, with four different brandsrepresented (Honda, SEAT,Volkswagen and Opel) plus a fewvisits from drivers and teams fromabroad. The fight for the title went down tothe wire and was only decided after

the finale at Estoril, where Morawon three of the weekend’s fourraces in his his Veloso MotorsportSEAT León and clinched the title, also benefiting from the incidentthat eliminated his teammates andclosest rivals Francisco Carvalhoand Nuno Batista."It was a close call. I knew that itwas going to be tough despite thefact I had arrived at Estoril as theleader of the classification, albeitwith a very slim margin. I stayedfocused to take good starts andavoid mistakes, but the last raceswere extremely close. Manuel Gião

was chasing me for the whole of thethird race, while José Rodrigues putme under a lot of pressure in theearly stages of the fourth.Eventually he was slowed down by atechnical issue and I was able torelax a bit,” Mora said after theseason finale. After a difficult start to theseason, Mora took the lead in thestandings in the last-but-oneevent. “I was happy to become thechampionship leader at Jerez. Weknew that was a crucial momentand we did our very best to take the

I have to thank VelosoMotorsport for supporting me in sucha fantastic way throughout theseason and I also want to payrespect to my competitors with whomI had a lot of tough, but fair fights.”As for his near future, Mora says:“Next year I would really like to racein the ADAC TCR Germany that Itasted with a one-off appearance atthe Nürburgring in 2016. It is a top-level championship and requires anexpensive budget. I hope that mytitle in the Portuguese series willhelp to find enough sponsors tosupport me. Dmitri Braginby Vadim Nikishev

After an evaluation season in 2015,the SMP Russian Circuit Racing Serieshas embraced the TCR concept forthe Touring class, its main category. Before the season kicked off, manywere convinced that it would be easyfor Lukoil Racing to defend the titlewon by Aleksey Dudukalo last year, especially because the team hadentered a trio of SEAT cars withexperienced drivers like NikolayKaramyshev and Roman Golikovalongside the reigning champion. However, Dmitry Bragin upset thepredictions. The TAIF Motorsportdriver soon proved to be the fastestof the field and claimed the title indominant fashion.“I am very pleased to see that the

level of our championship is growing, year after year. We are movingforward, which should always be thegoal in any challenge for both driversand promoters.”Incidentally, Bragin also won thetitle in the Touring Light class.“Next year I will continue racing withTAIF Motorsport in the Touring class, but more likely I won’t participate inthe Touring Light. I have won the titletwice in the last two years and theLADA Sport team is due to leave thatclass to focus on Touring and Super Production. I have already beeninvited to drive the Vesta for LADA Sport, but for the time being I have a contract with another team,so during next season I’ll just watch the Vesta progress. Then we willsee for 2018. For sure I would be

tempted to drive a Russian car…”You won a European Touring Car title back in 2014; are you thinkingabout further internationalexperience?“As for 2017 I’m not sure. This yearwe opened the score in the TCR TrophyEurope at Smolensk Ring, as it wasthe first event. But to stay incontention it was necessary to takepart in further events while my maingoal was to win the two titles in theRCRS.” In the Touring class you had to facethe Lukoil Racing trio of experienceddrivers.“The competition was tough. It wasmy first year in TCR and I had toadapt to the SEAT León, while mycompetitors from Lukoil Racing werealready well acquainted with it. But

TCR cars are easy to handle andadjust, even for a rookie. It was goodthat the car was fitted with a DSGgearbox. You can't damage the enginewhile shifting down with the paddles, because the ECU does not allow theselection of a wrong gear. As aprofessional driver, I could complainthat it's impossible to shift downwhile braking, and that with standardgear ratios you may use the top gearsonly at a fast track like Sochi but allthe TCR drivers were in the sameconditions, so it was fair competition. And then, the TCR cars are reliableand cheap to run, even in comparisonwith the Touring Light LADA thatrequired the use of three differentgearboxes to cope with differentracetracks. At the same time the SEAToffers a good range of adjustments. Icould feel how the car behaved rightfrom the first few laps and so wecould easily set it up according to theweather conditions and the grip, evenduring the qualifying session.”

Faust Salom & Jaume Fontby Elías Domingo

The first season of TCR in Spain tookthe form of a class within the CER(Campeonato de España Resistencia)in which Touring and GT cars rantogether in races between 50 minutesand three hours in duration.Eventually the pairing of Faust Salomand Jaume Font emerged as thewinners of both the TCR Spain andCER titles at the wheel of a SEAT Leónentered by Baporo Motorsport.“It has been an exciting and amazing

season, with some great fights thathelped me to learn a lot. Winning bothtitles was a very good result for myfirst season in professionalmotorsport,” said 19-year-old Salomwho shared the car with the moreexperienced Font, who echoed: “I wasa bit worried before the beginning ofthe season, as I had a new team anda new teammate. But everything wentperfectly well and I wish all seasonswould be as successful as this one.”Both drivers were enthusiastic about theTCR concept and the SEAT León TCR.

Font: “I like TCR very much, because it is open to many differentcars and the level is very high, withclosely-fought and exciting races. As for the León TCR, is a very well-designed and developed car that can be competitive on alltypes of tracks and is relatively easy to drive.”Salom: “TCR is the perfect option forboth young and experienced driversalike, as it allows them to show theirskill and progress within the differentTCR series from national to

It is also exciting to seethat the number of brands involvedkeeps on growing, which makes theracing closer and even more attractivefor competitors and fans alike.” While Font is still undecided abouthis future plans, Salom has a cleargoal in mind.“After winning the two Spanish titlesin 2016 and successfully making myfirst international appearance in theSeat León Eurocup round at the RedBull Ring, I would like to move up tothe next step and race in the TCRTrophy Europe or the TCR Ibéricoseries, in order to continue developingmy skills and my career. TCR cars find their place in long-distance races

In 2016, Creventic, the Dutchcompany promoting the 24H Seriesand the newly-created TCES (TouringCar Endurance Series), established aclass for TCR cars in itschampionships. Only a handful ofteams, all with SEAT cars, took upthe challenge but they soon provedthat their vehicles were not onlyreliable, but could also compete withmore powerful and expensivemachines over 12 or 24 hours. The Memac Ogilvy Duel Racing teamwon the TCR class within the 24HSeries in dominant fashion, claimingvictories at Dubai, Le Castellet andBarcelona and amassing more thandouble the points of its closest rivals. The winning quartet was formed bythree Lebanese brothers based in

Dubai – Sami, Ramzi and NabilMoutran – who were joined by PhilQuaife from England. In 2015 the team had won the 24HSeries overall title in a SEAT LeónSupercópa and swapped theirprevious car for a new León TCR forthe current season. “This seemed themost logical next step for us. The carproved to be a great package and thebest value for money with regards torunning costs,” Samy Moutran said, adding: “We have now won theChampionship two years in a row, soabsolutely it has gone better than weexpected. We have claimed ninepodiums from the last nine enduranceraces over two seasons. I think peoplewould struggle to find a moresuccessful endurance record across

any period in any category.”The TCR title for the TCES went toIvo and Rik Breukers, father and son,in a SEAT run by the Red Camel-Jordans.nl team.“It was great, but what I reallyenjoyed most is that we had a lot offun!” said 49-year-old Ivo whoshared the car with his 18-year-oldson, Rik. “Racing with your son is ofcourse great… until you see the kid ismuch faster than you, which in ourcase happened two years ago! Then, you start seeing yourself as a driverand your past achievements in aslightly different way… but I guessthat’s life…”The results achieved by the winningteams in the 24H Series and TCEShave proved that TCR cars are

perfectly fit to also compete in long-distance races.Ivo Breukers explains: “I think thatat the beginning of the season, not alot of people believed in the conceptand that is why there weren’t a lot ofcars. Then, facts proved that TCR carsare extremely reliable and real racingmachines. We have had very excitingraces, closely-fought until the flag andending with almost insignificant gaps.It was terrific racing and I am surethat, following that, the class willgrow a lot in both numbers andvariety for 2017.” As if to confirm his prediction, onemonth before the 2017 24H Serieskicks off in Dubai, six TCR entrieshave already been lodged: four SEATcars, one Honda and one Audi.
