When the fi rst buds of spring break, when the grass turns that verdant shade of green and when the spring peepers fi rst peep, that’s when I realize that I have been holding my breath for months.

I have nothing against winter. A good mid-Atlantic winter off ers a great break for the habitual gardener (although this year we’ve had a good New England winter). Gone are the back breaking days of planting, mulching and edging. Gone are the nights wondering if the deer really have the nerve to walk onto the patio—again. Gone is the constant tug to be in the yard. Winter can be a much needed time away from the garden. Fires, rich food, family, shoveling for exercise, and many, many books. And then,…one March day, the temperature reaches 60 degrees and, like all obsessed gardeners, I abandon my refl ective appreciation of the cold, dormant

season. I look for spring everywhere. I buy every fl owering plant that I come across. I swoon when the fi g in the dining room sprouts leaves. I stuff vases with branches, and sigh when they bloom. I glance with disdain at the shrinking snow piles in the garden supply parking lot. All of this to bide the time until the days get a bit longer, the temperatures warm and the peepers sing and it is spring!

Ladew is always a wonderful place to celebrate spring, and this year is no exception. We open on Saturday, March 27th and have planned a great and diverse schedule of programs and events. From art shows, book releases and steeplechases, to lectures, concerts and Garden Festival, the region’s best plant and garden sale—we are ready for you.

Th is issue of the Ladew Letter includes both details on activities at Ladew, as well as a listing of the donors and volunteers who helped make this last year a success. Th rough all of the stress and the strife of last year, you found us and supported us and made Ladew a part of your lives. For that, we are truly grateful.

See you in the garden!

ACHSAH O’DONOVAN

Ladew lost a great friend in November with the passing of Achsah O’Donavan. A longtime Trustee and, most notably, Chair of the House Committee, Achsah was dedicated to Ladew.

“She appreciated what Mr. Ladew had created at Pleasant Valley Farm and she had a great respect for what she was assigned to do as leader of the House Committee” off ered Ladew Corporate Trustee Martha Robbins. “Achsah was very thoughtful in how she spent the very limited funding that was available

in the early years at Ladew” adds Robbins, “She took her job very seriously”.

Her dedication was evident in other, more specifi c, ways. “She would do anything for Ladew” said Ladew Consulting Committee member Minnie Watriss. “One evening, on our way to Ladew for a meeting, she saw Osage Oranges on Hutchins Mill Road. She stopped the car and we scrambled around in the middle of the road, in the near dark, picking up these sticky oranges and tossing them in the back seat of the car…all because she thought they would be perfect for decorating Mr. Ladew’s house for Christmas—and they were!”

Stories abound of her hands-on work at Ladew. We will miss her quick, acerbic wit and her entertaining stories.

BARKER HICKOX

Twice a year, Ladew could expect a visit from our friend John “Barker” Hickox. Barker, a close friend of the Ladew family, took his job as an advocate for Ladew seriously. His visits to the gardens (which he fondly referred to as his “rounds”) were usually followed by a fax fi lled with observations, and shortly there-after, a gift from his foundation, the Barker Welfare Fund.

He was a joyful, gentle man who loved jazz, his family and friends and, lucky for us, Ladew. We will miss him.
