Hi everyone,
The 2015/2016 Babinda District Telephone Book is currently being processed. If everything goes according to plan the new phone books will be ready for distribution by June. In keeping with the last few years: all 2015/2016 members and/or advertisers will receive their first copy for free. The 2015/2016 phone book will be $5 each. However, don’t toss your old ones: if you trade in your old one (any year is accepted) we will take $1 off the 2015/2016 phone book in June when they have been printed.
Babinda’s 4th annual ‘International Women’s Day’ We are unable to publish photos from this event held in March as promised in last months issue. This is due to having lack of space however if anyone would like to see any of the photos please come into the Taskforce and I will gladly show them to you.
It has been suggested that we trial a ‘classifieds’ column in the monthly newsletter. This column may be used to sell/buy anything from barbeques to puppies and most things in between to the value of $1,000 and can be used by anyone within Australia. To use this new service the customer will need to come into the Taskforce with their advert and pay cash the small charge of .50 cents per word. As with all classifieds no $$$ - no advert.
This month at the Taskforce we were kept busy with (but not only): Greyhound Bus & Queensland Rail travel ticketing. We assisted over 100 Centrelink/Medicare customers. We faxed, photocopied, shredded, laminated printed and typed. We facilitated community meetings and negotiated agreements. We assisted with internet/computer customers here in our internet café. We mowed, killed weeds and updated our internet. We sold 100 club tickets and cans of soft drinks both @ $2 each.
Business hours: Monday to Thursday 9am - 4pm
‘You can tell who the strong women are. They are the ones you see building up one another instead of tearing each other down’
Please note: Next meeting Thursday 28 May 9.30am at the Taskforce. All members welcome Be kind to each other, Rachel

AMBULANCE NEWS
10 years ago I used to write a column for the Wet Tropics Weekly which was a free newspaper distributed
from Babinda to Cardwell – it was a good little paper published once a week. I found this old article when unpacking – my hay fever has gone troppo in the last few weeks with the change in weather so thought this
might be appropriate to a few others. I have condensed it for this month’s read allergies and asthma:
Allergies can have wide ranging effects from itchy eyes, redness, swelling of body tissues, sneezing and
life threatening complications. Common causes are pollen, dust, some foods, animal venoms as well
exposure to certain drugs, chemicals, cleaners and plants. Generally speaking contact with an allergen
means the body will fight the invader by releasing histamine. Problem is when you release too much
histamine you may get some of the symptoms outlined above. Medications used to combat allergic
reactions include anti histamines, corticoid steroids – common products such as Telfast, Zyrtec and
Claratyne. You may have heard of anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock which is an exaggerated or unusual
allergic reaction which can be life threatening.
Asthma is characterised by difficult breathing with wheezing due to spasmodic constriction of the bronchi
in the lungs. It can be life threatening and hundreds of people die from it each year. Fortunately for the
tens of thousands who have asthma preventative maintenance or relief with medications make it more of a
nuisance than a life threatening problem. Many asthmatic will have a puffer or take medications such as
Salbutamol or Becotide. Asthmatics have difficulty expelling their air – relax them and call 000.
Ambulances carry salbutamol and oxygen and most Paramedics are able to administer Adrenaline in life
threatening emergencies.
Until next month

Info Centre Illuminations How unusual for the “Wet Tropics” to be so dry. However, if you go through the history of rainfall at the Babinda
Post Office, there are quite a few years when we have had well less than 3 metres (3000mm of rain).
Cairns Regional Council have erected several new notices at both The Boulders and Rotary Park free camping
areas. The list of rules includes such things as not using a generator after 8:00pm and before 8:00am.These can be viewed at our Visitors Centre should visitors want to know the terms of their stay. Both areas now have a 72 hour maximum stay and campers can be prosecuted for overstaying under Local Laws. Council has also stated that authorised officers will patrol the facilities. “These rules are for the comfort and enjoyment of all camping ground us-
ers to ensure everyone has a pleasant and enjoyable stay.”
Skyrail has informed us that they have new information, pricing and brochures as of April 1, 2015. Skyrail Rainforest
Cableway will be closed for maintenance on:
May: Thursday 7th, Thursday 14th and Thursday 21st. Kuranda Scenic Railway will be subsequently closed on May:
Friday 1st, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th
Quite a few visitors have commented on how beautiful our local attractions are, but have also commented on how crowded they are. This is the case at many of our region’s attractions and is a testament to how popular they are.
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a solution to this dilemma.
Malanda Visitors Information Centre is conducting Rainforest Dreaming guided tours on Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
Numbers are limited so you need to book – 4096 6957.
There are two tours per day at 9.30cm and 11am. Innisfail Information Centre has closed down for the time being.
Phone call from The Cairns Post, a reporter asking if we had a list of Defence Force Personnel from WW1 for Anzac Day. I suggested that perhaps Council could be of help. The gentleman then said, “Yes, I have to phone Cassowary
Coast Council anyway.” So much for accurate reporting!
Until next time ------ Happy Trails

Thank you Babinda & Surrounding Communities As some of you may know Demi Bettini, 13 years of age is currently at Lady
Cliento Hospital Brisbane Battling Osteosarcoma, Cancer in the femur. Demi
suggested to her parents (Darrin & Ronda), that she would like to make a
difference for the older children in the Oncology Ward at the hospital, as most
items donated currently are for younger children. This in mind she approached
the oncology head nurse, Cathy, and told her what she was planning to do!
With all the fundraising efforts she has been involved in over the years, she
knew just a way to ensure donations and gifts can be brought just for teenagers
at Lady Cliento Children's Hospital, so she put Ronda and Riannon to the
test... A Ladies Night was held at their Boutique in Babinda "R-Lee Fashions"
where all entry fees were donated and the money was used to buy small gifts
for older children just like Demi, just to make things a little brighter and
hopefully put a smile on their faces. Demi has now made us promise that we
continue to support these kids and to always have something in her horse
bucket for them at the hospital! On behalf of the Bettini Family we would just
like to give a huge thank-you to all our customers, family and friends who
attended his event - we look forward to hopefully seeing you again at our next event on Friday 15th May or our
ongoing events in the future. Also on behalf of the Oncology Unit we received a thank you letter reading: We would
like to thank you for your kind and thoughtful donation to our department at the Lady Cliento Hospital. The
teenagers and their families are overwhelmed with gratitude for your generosity. We understand the Bettini Family is
going through this journey as well and to still take out time to consider other patients and families is admirable. So
on behalf of all staff, parents, patients and other special people of the Oncology Unit at the LCCH Level 5c – we
would like to say a big “Thank you” from the bottom of our hearts. – Cathy Henry (Nurse Unit Manager). If anyone
would like to make a donation or have any gifts suitable for these children please contact R-lee Fashions or the
Bettini Family. Ph: 0448 96 2005.

Vale Australia’s COLLEEN McCULLOCH
The life story has ended for this Aussie author, who became famous internationally for her many popular novels. Colleen McCulloch sadly
has died in hospital on Norfolk Island. She was 77 years and for 40 years has been one of our top selling authors.
Having personally read most of Colleen’s work of 25 novels, I consider her talent to be outstanding. ‘The Thorn Birds’,
her first novel has become a Literary Masterpiece.
I regret her death but am grateful for her outstanding contribution
to Australia’s literary accomplishments.
Well Done Aussie Colleen McCulloch!

FALLS PRESENTATION DAY , in conjunction with APRIL NO FALLS month
was held at Abbeyfield house by the Babinda MPHS Staff. Invitations were
mailed to our more senior residents and we were delighted with the response,
50 interested persons attended. The presentation was about remaining safely
and fall free in your own home for as long as possible, there is a higher chance that this will
happen by doing regular exercise. Some exercises were demonstrated by our
physiotherapists Julie and Wendy. Also our Occupational Therapist spoke about how to
make your home safer to minimize falls. If anyone requires any assistance with any home
modifications or ideas OR anyone interested in joining in with our walking group or get
strong program, please phone Hayley on 40678280. Our two guest speakers Sam Catalano
and Royce Ryan were very interesting to listen to when they gave their journeys of success
which was highlighted by increasing their strength through exercise. Everyone seemed to
enjoy their morning, many thanks to Abbeyfield House for the use of their premises and a
morning tea of very tasty scones which were baked by Gail.

ANZAC DAY.
It was fantastic to see so many people join in the parade on Anzac Day, it really shows how proud we stand
in remembrance and support of our war hero’s. This will live on strong, judging by the number of our younger community members who participated in the parade. Two of our aged care residents also joined
us in commemorating Anzac Day.
Flu Vaccines have arrived and a lot of peo-
ple have already had their annual vaccine.

appointment for yourself.
As winter approaches we tend to
not think so much about the effects
of the sun as it is such a pleasure to
be out in its warmth. What we need
to remember is that it continues to
be very strong and we need to pro-
tect ourselves from the damage it

Volunteers needed for tree planting.
The Wet Tropics Biodiversity Foundation needs help to
plant 1,500 trees at the lower reach of Babinda Creek on
Friday 5 June 2014. The project has been organised as part
of World Environment Day, which is the biggest, most
celebrated global day for positive environmental action.
The event will create connectivity between existing pockets
of remnant forest through planting with tree species
endemic to Babinda. Key outcomes of the day are improved
bank stability of Babinda Creek and creation of habitat and
a transition corridor for native plants and animals. Other
benefits include teaching and research opportunities and
carbon reduction.
The event will take place between 8am and 4pm. Signs and
flagging tape will assist with directing traffic towards the
revegetation site at the bottom end of Gerbanos Road.
What to wear and bring? Wear closed in shoes, and a hat,
clothing and sunscreen to protect against the sun. A food
kiosk will be set up for refreshments. Tools will be provided.
Babinda Community Bank® Branch, Bendigo Bank has
come on as an early sponsor of the tree planting event.
To register as a volunteer for the day or for further informa-
tion please call the Wet Tropics Biodiversity Foundation –
Liz on 0427903390 or Dennis on 0400558381.

Local Author Launches Book in Babinda
Many avid readers attended the launch of author Susan
Alley’s latest book “Cheerio, Don” which was held at the
Babinda Tavern last Saturday. The author was
introduced by Don Lawie who spoke of his own army
service in Papua New Guinea in the 1960s and compared
his experiences to those of Don Mitchell, the subject of
Susan’s book, set in WWII. Susan spoke of her uncle,
Don Mitchell, who served first with the Australian Militia
and then with the Australian Army and explained how his
letters home were her inspiration in writing his story. She
elaborated on the research that needed to be done and the
information that could be found from diaries, artefacts
and stories from the people who knew Don. After her
witty and informative talk, light refreshments were served
and a great deal of discussion ensued. This event was
very enjoyable for all who attended and for those of you
who missed it, you still have a chance of reading Don’s
story as copies of the book are available at the Babinda
Arts and Crafts Co-op, Cairns Book of Cairns Central
and on line at www.jabirupublishing.com.au

ST RITA’S SCHOOL
We have had a busy start to Term 2 at St Rita’s. The senior class were thrilled to begin the new term with a three-day camp at ‘Echo Creek Adventure Centre’. The weather was perfect, food plentiful and the student activities lots of fun. The favourites, of course, were Laser Tag and archery
St Rita’s extended a huge thank you to staff, Mrs Maryjane Masina and Mrs Kurucz, who spent
countless hours preparing and organising the excursion. Assistance from parent volunteers,
Andrew Musumeci, Julie Parker and Shane Wiles, also ensured a hugely successful school
camp for 2015. Next week, the students are looking forward to hosting the Mother’s Day
Pampering Afternoon. Our very special mothers, grandmothers and aunts are invited to visit St
Rita’s for an afternoon of pampering and relaxation.
This event is enjoyed by the whole school
community each year as part of our Mother’s
Day celebrations.
I hope everyone has a happy and rewarding term at all schools in the Babinda district.

SETTLERS’ MUSEUM NEWS
By Don Lawie
We have a special display in the Museum to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac and also of the
First World War. Men from the Mulgrave Shire volunteered to fight one hundred and one years ago and
our presentation is to honour their memory.
We have been fortunate to have on loan some special mementoes –a superb trench periscope from
the Western Front, a range of medals from both sides of the conflict, a 1915 Lee Enfield rifle and bayonet,
and similar weapons and artefacts. A Gallipoli section features the original copy of a diary written in the
trenches under fire, shrapnel, an artillery shell nose piece, wound stripes, medals and other relics of the
campaign. The Settlers’ Museum is in Gordon Street Gordonvale, opposite The Mill.
Open 10am – 2pm Monday to Saturday Admission $4, or
$3 seniors and children. Our members come from Babinda
to Cairns and new members are always welcome. For info
