I hope you all enjoyed it as much as our family did. The 4th of July week of activities was action packed & a great deal of fun. Many thanks go to your board of Trustees, the volunteers who hosted events and everyone who donated to the fireworks fund. (194 people donated $17,529.33 an all-time high) We just completed our two summer dock parties; thanks go to Anthony Martinez for hosting the August party and to Brenda and Joseph Riordan for hosting the September party. Just because the leaves are starting to turn color doesn’t mean we are done for the year. The LSCC will host a candidate forum on Wednesday, October 16th doors open at 6:30; the forum will begin promptly at 7:00. All candidates for the open council seats and the Mayoral position have agreed to attend. This may be your last chance to meet the candidates and see what they are all about before the ballots drop. While most of the questions will be about issues concerning Lake Sawyer, the forum is open to the public. Invite your voting friends and neighbors to come and learn about how the candidates feel about issues concerning Lake Sawyer. The format will be similar to the forums held in the past. The LSCC has asked for candidate questions from our members. The next fall activity will be Oktoberfest. Brats & beer will be served for members only, Saturday October 19th at the LSCC. Doors open at 6:00PM. While it would be nice to automatically assign the best Polka dancing, lederhosen wearing individuals open seats on the 2014 LSCC board, we know it is a volunteer position. Please consider signing up for the board next year. If you have questions, feel free to ask any of the current board what the duties entail. Finally, I would like to close with a special thanks to our 178 Lake Sawyer Community Club 2013 members. Without your support every year we would not be able to sustain the over 50 year legacy of this club. Hope to see you at our next events. Paddleboat, Canoe/Kayak & Standup Paddle BoardFrank and Jean Gardiner host the most popular event on the lake. No question. The excitement and energy that this event creates pales only to the actual firework show. The Gardiner family can handle a floating crowd like nobodies business! The turnout for this event is huge and appeals to all ages of racers and spectators. This was the first year the LSCC officially added the standup paddle board category. No question it is a permanent addition! The Kayakers / Canoes went first competing on their own (new) course while the Paddleboats and Stand Up Paddleboards completed the traditional course around the islands. This year’s paddleboat winners for the second year in a row were Katie Cooper & Shannon Pfleugrath! Hmmm, will there be a three-pete? No pressure gals! The winner of the Kayak race was a fast fellow named Michael. *If anyone knows who the speed demon was, let us know and we will give him a shout out in the next newsletter. The canoe winners were Ryan Lewis & Justin Ross and finally our standup paddle board winner was Ben Merrill. Thanks to all that turned out and especially Frank & Jean Gardiner for their long term support of the club and organizing this race and provided fun prizes for 25 years!

Fishing Derby Joe & Gail Perkins have good memories of fishing derbies from the past; and offered to bring back the annual fishing derby to Lake Sawyer. Based on the turnout and age of winners, many more great memories were made this year. Carson from dock #100 was the grand prize winner with his 13” fish for the 12 and under category. Casey from dock #18 was 2nd with a 12” fish. For the 13 and older category, Taylor was 1st prize with a 7” fish and Alicia came in 2nd with a 5 ¾” both from dock #18 as well. Congratulations and Thank You to all that participated. The day was great and the fishing was fun. All winners received trophies and earned their first fish story. Thank you Perkins family and to all who participated. The smiling faces sum it nicely; we look forward to next year.

Diamond Car DetailingWhile the Floating Donation Station was circling the lake, small business owner Jackie Merrill was holding a fundraising car wash at the community club. Jackie & her team of volunteers and friends raised $740. in 4 hours of work! Jackie is in her first year of college and will re-open her business this summer. Thanks Jackie! Volunteers who were rocking the sponges and signs included: Jeff & Cheri & Izzi Merrill, Amanda Fraser, Lukas Henning, Bryn Metzger, Anthony Martinez, Iliane Meyerhoff, Kevin Pratap, Michael Raybuck, Monica Stewart, Ashley Welsh, Shane & Brandon Wilson.

Fun Run, Walk, RideThe Saturday before July 4th is the traditional kick off date for the events that unfold for a fun Fourth. This event is open to the public; participants are able to enjoy a scenic trip around Lake Sawyer that we are not able to use any other time of the year. It was a warm day after a very warm week – what a terrible problem to have! Fewer walkers and runners showed up this year, maybe they got their exercise in earlier to beat the heat? (Or not) The 34 cyclists were revved up and ready for sure! We have 2 families that dominate in the bike race. The top 5 were: Winner Lukas Henning with a time of 20 min. 41 sec. WOW! Lukas was followed by Jeff Merrill, Niklas Henning, Cheri Merrill & Jackie Merrill. The runners laced up and took off. The top 5 were: Winner Brent Miller with a time of 39 min. 33 sec. Brent was followed by Bruce Earley, Rob Coy, Nikki Roeder & Kurt Oliver. The walkers lined up and moseyed on out. The first family finished with a time of 1 hr. 27 min. ; Laura & Tony Nowacki & their young daughters, Melissa & Ashley on bikes. Followed by Nani Sipila, Kalei McKittrick and Betsy Sunada. Thanks to Black Diamond Police who keep the route safe for the participants. As always, thanks to the volun-teers who run this event, Lake Sawyer Grocery for providing cold water and to PCC for allowing access on the route.

Volley Ball TournamentThank you to Weston Butt Jr. and his family for hosting the annual LSCC Volleyball Tournament and providing the prizes for the winning team. Dock 200 is THE place to watch the local talent serve, bump & spike their way through the winner’s bracket. There were 11 power-ful teams this year and it proved to be very competitive. The double elimination tourney was in full swing all afternoon and drew in as many fans as there were players. There were lots of vocal spectators on land and on the water to support their favorite teams. Congratulations to the East for winning the second year in a row! The West will be back to try again next year! Thank you to all that participated and to our gracious hosts.

Boat ParadeWOW! This year’s boat parade was…A REAL PARADE! The LSCC board relied on a theme that had been a winner in the past. The theme this year was “Sports team- Fly Your Colors”. Our new judges, Fred & Patty Weston had a hard time choosing a winner with so many entries. The Black Diamond Marine Patrol boat led the procession, followed by Uncle Sam (Brian Hoefig) and his merry band of candy throwers. Third in line was U of W Husky themed boat with a giant Rose Bowl flag that had to deftly steer around all of the kids jumping in the water for candy!? There was a true underdog float (Average Joe’s) that at the last minute needed to be TOWED (Thanks, Sherers). Congratulations to the winners: Best Decorated “Globetrotters” from Dawn Johnston & Kerry Dean (dock #310) who outfitted a boat and an entire team of Globetrotters dancing to the happy theme song. Best Theme: “Seattle Sports Stars” Paula & Phil Acosta (dock #98) adorned their Sea Swirl runabout with an overhead line of jerseys from Seahawks, Mariners & Sounders. Most Original: “Old School Sports” Val Drllevich’s (dock #196) grandkids got out the old gear and represented the ancient technology some of us remember. Thanks to “The Boot” for always “cooling off” the captive participants; your tradition has made its way to the rest of the lake!

Water-Ski / Wakeboard RecapThis isn’t your Grandmas water sport exhibition! The boats, gear and guts that go with today’s water sports are huge! The folks who showed up to watch the lake talent cut up the water were rewarded with a great show. (Good coffee, friends and the warm sunshine on our shoulders didn’t hurt either.) Three talented slalom skiers enjoyed the early morning glass; James Banks, Brian Kerley & Jacqueline Stocks. Then the air show started: RyleyBreiteman, Sean Destro, Colton Diffley, Gary Farmer, Ben Merrill and Bart Selz, strapped on the boards and WORKED THAT WAKE! There are great pictures on our website, be sure to check them out. Thanks to the Black Diamond Marine Patrol for standing by to ensure rules are followed. Thanks again to all who participated. See you next year!

NON EMERGENCY NUMBEROn September 16, 2013, a non-emergency number will be implemented to aid citizens in reporting incidents to police that are not urgent in nature. Valley Communications Center, King County E-911, and local law enforcement agencies are partnering to promote a non-emergency number in order to route calls appropriately and to allow 911 call-takers the opportunity to answer urgent and emergency calls.Black Diamond residents are encouraged to call 360-886-0022 when you need the police, but it is not urgent in nature. Some examples of a non-emergency call may include:▪ Disturbances including a loud radio or party▪ Drinking in public▪ Property or business disputes involving a landlord, property or business▪ Trespassing / loiteringImportant: If you’re not sure whether the situation is a true emergency, officials recommend calling 911 and letting the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help. When you call 911, be prepared to answer the call-taker’s questions, which may include:• The location of the emergency, including the street address• The phone number you are calling from• The nature of the emergency• Details about the emergency, such as a physical description of a person who may have committed a crime, a description of any fire that may be burning, or a description of injuries or symptoms being experienced by a person having a medical emergencyRemember, the call-taker’s questions are important to get the right kind of help to you quickly. Be prepared to follow any instructions the call-taker gives you. Many 911 centers can tell you exactly what to do to help in an emergency until help arrives.ADVISE IF ANY WEAPONS ARE INVOLVED

House & Yard Flair It can be difficult to get a house decorated and ready for guests on a mid week holiday. That is why the judges were pleasantly surprised by all of the effort lake residents put into their outdoor decorations. Captain Lynn Christie took judges, Sue Sherer, Sue Fish & Brenda Riordan on a bumpy tour during fast hours to choose the winners. The categories were: most creative, best use of plants & best decorated house. Congratulations to our winners! The prize for most creative went to Dawn Johnston and Kerry Dean at dock 310 for their beautiful patriotic flag painted on the lawn. The prize for the best use of flowers went to Cindy and Ken Smith at dock 203 for the brightly-colored flowers displayed throughout their yard. The grand prize went to a familiar previous winner, Cindy and Sam Kerley at dock 279 for their stupendous display ofEVERYTHING Fourth of July!

Food Bank & Fireworks! The LSCC really tries to make it EASY for lake residents to become members and donate to the firework fund. We learned that Lake Meridian has a fundraising boat that goes dock to dock to raise money for their firework show. The Lake Sawyer show was still under-funded by half, in June. Volunteers were going door to door and making calls. It seems as many folks that like to pay in February, like to wait until the last minute. Sue Sherer (LSCC board member) and husband Scott thought it would be a great way to use their new pontoon boat! Thanks to Captains Sue & Scott and the crew of Anthony Martinez (Capt. Bullhorn) & Sue Fish (Capt. Accountant) there was a floating donation station! THANKS to everyone who contributed to the Black Diamond Food Bank and Lake Sawyer firework fund when we visited your dock on June 30th. Over 130 pounds of food was collected and just short of $1000 for the firework display. Look for us next year at the end of the boat parade on the 4th of July. Uncle Sam will be doling out candy at the head of the parade and we will be collecting “taxes” at the end! If you have a big party on the 4th at your place (and who doesn’t?), this is a great way for your friends to pitch in for the show they come to enjoy, as well as an opportunity for you to share your abundance with those in need. THANKS AGAIN!
