“THE SKY IS FALLING,
THE SKY IS FALLING “ If you came to the Clubhouse on the morning
of Tuesday, February 2, you might have felt
like you were Chicken Little as sometime
during the evening of February 1, gravity
took over and the plaster under the front
eaves came crashing down to the ground.
Thankfully, it happened when there weren’t
any cars parked or members around. The
only “injuries” were to a few unlucky ti trees
and other plants that were squashed by
decades of cement-like plaster, wire and
nails.
A call was made to our insurance company
and within a few days, a crew from L.K.
Takamori, Inc. was dispatched to clean up
the area and remove the fallen debris. It took
two days just to break the fallen pieces into
manageable sizes and haul them away.
As the PPP goes to press, the damaged area
has already been repaired but there is still
construction work ongoing near the flagpole
and President’s parking area so as to avoid
another incident like the February 2nd one.
The Clubhouse and office will remain open
during construction but parking may be a
little tight on weekdays.
Chicken skin story: One of the workers, who
had never been to the Clubhouse before,
discovered on his first day here that the
grandfather he had never met was a veteran
of Able Company.

ANNIVERSARY
BANQUET UPDATE
by Beverly Shiroma
Since the publication of last
month’s PPP, the Anniversary
Banquet date has been changed
to SUNDAY, JULY 10th.
The change was due to our
committee learning that the
100th/442d Reservists would be
on the Big Island on the
previously scheduled date in
June. The soldiers are the
backbone of our volunteer pool
and are such an integral part of
our Banquet program that there
was no way we could make the
day a wonderful and memorable
one without them. We
apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause
anyone and we hope to see you
in July.
This year, our Banquet will
once again be at the Pomaika’i
Ballrooms at Dole Cannery in
Iwilei. It seemed that this was a
very convenient location for
everyone and we know the
layout of the place pretty well.
Thank you to the Green
Thumbs members who will be
providing plants for and putting
together our centerpieces.
DOG CHAPTER NEWS by Joy Teraoka
Our thought and prayers to Moriso and Denis Teraoka (both Doggies, but not
related to each other). Moriso Teraoka hasn't been able to get around as
much as before. We wish him another boost of energy and good health so that
he can do all the things he loves to do around the Kapiolani Community
College campus and as a docent at the Punchbowl Veterans Cemetery.
After Denis Teraoka's recent surgeries at Queen's Hospital complications
developed. Please extend prayers of comfort and strength to him.
Reminder: Regarding the especially important meeting at the Clubhouse
on March 12, 2016, please attend and vote or send in your proxy ballot. The
future of our 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans organization depends on your
vote.
MAINLAND CHAPTER NEWS by Teresa Takahashi
The 100th Btn Veterans Club-Mainland celebrated their annual Valentine's
Day lunch and formal induction of officers: Co-Presidents Pauline
Yoshihashi, Steve Sato & (Larry)Scott Takahashi; Treasurer Tak
Shimazaki; and Secretary Shirley Tanaka. The officers were sworn in by
new Go For Broke National Education Center's President, Dr. Vince
Beresford. Many special guests and absent friends joined in for a delicious
lunch catered by Ladybug. It was great to see such a large group in
attendance! Lots of food, friendship and fun was had by all. Jason
Kusagaya, the unofficial official photographer for most veterans' events, set
up a special Valentine's Day "photo booth". We concluded lunch with our
usual array of desserts and raffle, where everyone leaves with a prize. Thanks
to VFW Post 3261 who was gracious to let us use their hall.
Tak Shimazaki, Scott Takahashi, Steve Sato, Shirley Tanaka and Pauline Yoshihashi are sworn by Dr. Vince Beresford in as 2016 Officers.

BAKER CHAPTER NEWS by Ann Kabasawa
Baker Members - please remember to come to the Special
Meeting on Saturday, March 12 at 10 am at the Clubhouse. If you
are unable to attend the meeting, please send your signed proxy to
the Clubhouse Office by noon on March 3rd.
A private party was held at the Clubhouse to celebrate Baker
veteran Judge Takashi Kitaoka’s 104th birthday and HQ veteran
Edward Ikuma’s 97th birthday. The standing room only crowd
included Baker veterans Jack Nakamura, Sonsei Nakamura and
Rikio Tsuda, Able veteran Don Matsuda, 442nd veterans
Takashi “Bolo” Shirakata and Isao “Roy” Takiyama as well as
many others from the 100th family and the 100th/442d Reservists.
I heard a rumor that even the French Consul General had come to
wish the birthday boys a great day.
What made this birthday celebration unique is that there was a
posthumous Bronze Star presentation by Maj. Gen. (Ret.)
Robert Lee and LTC Keith Horikawa of the 303rd MEB
(formerly the 100th/442d Commander) to a representative of the
Hasegawa family whose father served in Baker Company under
Judge Kitaoka during WWII.
DESCENDANTS CHAPTER
by Bert Hamakado Due to popular demand, we are going to
have two more Turner Hall Theater events at
the Clubhouse. The first will be in May as
an early Mothers Day present to all of the
moms out there. We are
hoping to show a musical
starring 100th Honorary
Member, the late Misora
Hibari. Did you know
that she was only 12 years
old when she held three
concerts as fundraisers for
the Club in 1950? The second will be in
June for Fathers Day when we hope to show
a movie with everyone’s favorite samurai,
Zatoichi.
If you know of a Hibari movie with a
connection to Hawaii or a Zatoichi movie
appropriate for all ages (and both with
English subtitles), please let me know.

HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS
by Janice Sakoda, daughter of Gary K. Uchida
As you know, there will be a Special Meeting on
March 12 for members to vote on an amendment
to the by-laws and to discuss the proposal
regarding the Club’s property. PLEASE make
every effort to (1) complete, sign, and send in
your proxy and (2) attend this meeting so you can
gain first-hand information. Every member’s
proxy and attendance is needed! If you need help
or have questions, please call Dot Tamashiro or
Jan Sakoda.
Our Spring Luncheon is scheduled for March 16.
Place and time have not been determined yet but
the “regulars” will be notified. IF you are not a
“regular” to our luncheon but would like to be
included, please let me know and I will add you to my
contact list.
Congratulations to HQ’s own Ed Ikuma who
celebrated his 97th birthday in February. There was a
birthday celebration for him and for Judge Kitaoka,
who turned 104!!! It was so good to see them both at
the Clubhouse.
If you have a bounty of plants and would like to
donate some to Iolani Fair’s Plant Sale, April 15 and
16, please let me or Jayne Hirata know. For more
information, see the Green Thumbs Club column in
this PPP.
Due to space limitations, we could not run the
Headquarters Chapter News in its entirety in the Oct.-
Nov. PPP so here it is for you to enjoy.
August of this year was my
very first trip to Japan…
Hokkaido to be specific. I had
been a little hesitant about
going, having heard from the
time I was little about the squat
toilets. I also wondered what I
would eat since I didn’t eat
sashimi. (Someone who didn’t
eat sashimi told me she had
survived with a jar of peanut
butter, and I briefly thought of
doing that too.) Foolish,
foolish me!!! After spending 3
weeks in Japan, I can honestly say I LOVE Japan and
am ready to go back!
Japan has great food! We enjoyed many wonderful
buffet breakfasts of rice (and the rice was
outstanding!), miso soup, (cooked) fish, tsukemono,
ume, konbu, and other seafood. Hokkaido is known
for their seafood, milk products, super sweet corn and
baked goods. But I must say, the baked goods and
ice cream were not as sweet as what we’re used to in
Hawaii. One of Ed’s highlights was going to a
marketplace where he bought a bowl of rice, then
went to a vendor where he could buy sashimi by the
slice. So many varieties!!!
The people in Japan are respectful! I was so
impressed with a grandpa who was travelling on the
train with his (maybe) 3 year old granddaughter. She
was getting sleepy with the lull of the train so the
grandpa wanted her to look out the window to keep
her awake. He took off her shoes first, then told her
to stand up and look at the scenery outside. This
happened another time on another train so it’s not an
isolated case. How many grandparents or parents in
Hawaii or U.S. would take off the child’s shoes/
slippers before having them stand on the bus/train
seat? It wouldn’t even dawn on me to do so.
The people in Japan are polite, even when they are
irritated and frustrated. Ed and I happened to be in
Kushiro where major fireworks were going to be set
off that evening. It seems all of Kushiro, plus many
more, came out to this event. People were,
unsuccessfully, trying to get past us, not knowing that
just a few feet away, it was roped off so they couldn’t
go further. I could hear the frustration in the people’s
voice as they said (in an irritated tone),
“Sumimasen!!!” as they tried to go past us, and was
met with equally irritated voices telling them they
couldn’t go further, “Ikenai!”. Despite the crowd
(and boy, were we surrounded by a mob of people!),

HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS
Continued from page 5
we felt safe. I didn’t feel the need to keep a hand on
my purse to prevent being pickpocketed. Okay, okay,
maybe we were naïve.
Japan is clean! Even with all the thousands and
thousands of people in Kushiro, there was no rubbish on
the ground! And there is very, very little graffiti (and the
ones we saw were in very obscure places), almost NO
rubbish or trash in the streets, and very few laundry/
futons hanging from the lanai or balcony. In fact, people
planted beautiful flowers and/or vegetables in a lot of the
open spaces, including in/near some of the train stations
in the country. Also, all the homes we saw from the train
were neat and without much clutter. (Made me want to
go home and declutter my yard! Fortunately – or
unfortunately – that feeling passed before I returned
home.)
Hokkaido’s weather in August was not too hot and not
too cold, but just right! I had brought a jacket with me.
Turns out I probably used it only once or twice. One
older lady was sitting next to me on the train and she
thought I might be cold. She started to put a jacket over
my shoulders. Not speaking much Japanese, I shook my
head and said, “Watakushi wa atatakai”. I must have had
an accent because she didn’t understand me. I then
grabbed her hand and once she felt my warm hands, she
understood I wasn’t cold. We had a little chuckle over
that.
So I, who didn’t care to travel to Japan, now can’t wait to
go back!
ABLE ANTICS by Beverly Shiroma

who usually end up doing the cooking before we head
out to work).

GREEN THUMBS CLUB by Janice Sakoda
The Green Thumbs Club will now be meeting monthly, right after
collating, about 11:00 a.m. the last Saturday of each month, unless
otherwise announced.
There will be no meeting in February as there are lots going on
with the Body, Mind, and Soul (BMS) group. At a previous
meeting, the Green Thumb Club members voted to be under the
umbrella of Body, Mind, and Soul but we will retain our identity
as our focus is on (edible) plants.
Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m.
(If you were at our January meeting, you know we had decided to
cancel our March meeting. However, since the Green Thumbs
Club has offered to make the table decorations for the Anniversary
Banquet, I thought we should meet to discuss this.)
If you’re interested in enhancing your soil with microbes and
making your own kombucha, you’ll want to attend our meeting
on Sunday, April 3 at 11:30 a.m. as Jan Nadamoto and Lee Ann
Yuen will be sharing about microbes and showing you how you
can make your own mixture of beneficial microbes. You will also
be able to take home a bottle for use after letting it sit for 2
weeks! After that, Arlene Sato will be sharing about making
kombucha, a healthy beverage to improve your digestion. You
will be making a new batch of tea with a scoby to grow and you
will also be able to take home some ready to drink tea so
please bring a clean quart or gallon glass jar with a wide
mouth and cover (a mayonnaise glass jar is ok) so you can
transport the new batch of tea and scoby home as well as a 16 oz
glass bottle to take home your ready to drink tea. The cost for
both workshops is $15, payable by March 24, 2016. Please make
checks out to Jan Nadamoto and send them to the Clubhouse – 520
Kamoku Street, Honolulu, HI 96817.
There will be no meeting on May 28 as that is Memorial Day
weekend.
Our meeting on June 25 will be prepping for the Anniversary
Banquet centerpieces. All hands are welcome! (Banquet will be
on Sunday, July 10.)
July meeting – to be determined.
For August, we plan to meet on August 6 and attend the 28th
Annual Halawa Xeriscape Garden Open House and Unthirsty Plant
Sale.
Stay tuned for more classes. We’re hoping to have a class on
healing plants, black bean tea, and carving narcissus bulbs; some
excursions planned are to visit the Cherry Blossoms in Wahiawa in
2017, tour the Xeriscape Garden, and possibly the Kahuku Farm

BODY, MIND AND SOUL
by Jan Nadamoto
Bacon, Bacon, Bacon! Learn how to
make your own bacon at this Body, Mind
and Soul workshop, by Lyle
Maesaka! How does bacon fit into a
Body, Mind and Soul theme? Well, it fits
into the Paleo Diet and it is actually
“better” for you than the store bought
bacon because you know what you’re
using to make it! And, on sale, the black
label bacon is going for over $6 for 12
ounces (…oops… actually, that 12
ounces does include the liquids that they
inject into the meat so I’m not exactly
sure what the “real” cost is…).
In this workshop you will learn about the
background and facts about making your
own cure and the process of making your
own bacon from beginning to end. After
the demonstration and making your own
cure you’ll be able to taste 3 “flavors” of
homemade bacon (YUM!). You will also
have about 3 pounds of bacon that has
started it’s curing process to take home
and finish!

10 am -12 noon
520 Kamoku Street
Cost is $35 per person
for Club 100 members
and $40* for non members. Pre-payment
is required, as supplies need to be
purchased. Space is limited to only 12
people. (sorry, no refunds)
Deadline to RSVP and send in
payment: March 10, 2016

CLUBHOUSE CLOSED
The Office will be closed on Tuesday, March 8 as I
have to volunteer at my son’s school event and on
Friday, March 25 for Kuhio Day.
Please remember that the Office is CLOSED on
weekends and holidays and plan accordingly. If
you know of a senior who may be coming alone to
the Clubhouse, please make sure that the building
will be open or that someone will stay with him until
it is. We recently had an incident where a veteran
was dropped off at the Clubhouse at 10 am on a
Saturday for a 1 pm meeting. He would have been
stuck outside of the closed building by himself for
hours if someone didn’t happen to stop by.
