What is Inpatient

Hospice Care?

Criteria for Inpatient

Hospice Care

Good Shepherd Hospice Center at Rockville Centre

Opened in January 2019, Good Shepherd Hospice

Center at Rockville Centre is located on the second

floor of Mercy Medical Center. This new Hospice

Center provides a home-like setting that includes

12 private patient suites with accommodations for

loved ones to spend the night, a family living room

and dining room for visitor gathering, family

shower suites, a prayer room for quiet reflection,

and a family meeting room. Staffed by hospice

physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains,

home health aides and volunteers, the Center

offers expert hospice care in a peaceful,

comfortable environment. Family can visit any

time of the day and pets are always welcome.

Good Shepherd Hospice Center at Port Jefferson

The Good Shepherd Hospice Center at Port

Jefferson is located on the campus of St. Charles

Hospital. Featuring hospice expertise in a

home-like setting, the Center features private

rooms and bath suites. All rooms include sleeping

accommodations for family members, a television

and access to WiFi. The Center also includes a

family kitchen for loved ones to gather and a large

living room to accommodate visitors. The private

setting allows for family members to visit

uninterrupted, and visiting hours are unlimited

and not restricted by age. Pets are also welcome to

visit at any time.

Inpatient hospice care, often referred to as

General Inpatient Care (GIP), is one of the

four levels of hospice care provided by the

Medicare Hospice Benefit and most other

hospice plans. It is a valuable tool that allows

hospice staff to provide advanced clinical care

for the management of symptoms and

complex care that cannot be provided in the

patient’s home. GIP is intended for specific

circumstances and for a short duration when

prior efforts to manage symptoms have been

ineffective.

Good Shepherd Hospice has two Hospice

Centers, one in Port Jefferson on the campus

of St. Charles Hospital and one in Rockville

Centre, located in Mercy Medical Center. All

staff providing care are employees of Good

Shepherd Hospice and have specialized

training and expertise in hospice care and

symptom management. Patients and family

members are encouraged to tour the Centers at

any time to truly understand the commitment

to excellent patient and family care that Good

Shepherd Hospice offers.

Good Shepherd Hospice patients receiving

home hospice care can be transferred directly

from home to a Hospice Center for specialized

care when medically necessary. Hospitalized

patients who choose hospice care but require

ongoing inpatient symptom management may

be admitted to a Hospice Center at the time of

hospice enrollment.

General Inpatient Care is appropriate when

the hospice team determines that the patient’s

symptoms cannot be adequately managed in

the patient’s home or another residential

setting.

Common reasons for inpatient hospice care

may include the following:

Pain or symptom crisis not managed by

treatment changes in the current setting, or

that require frequent medication adjustments

and monitoring.

Intractable nausea and vomiting

Advanced open wounds requiring complex

care

Unmanageable respiratory distress

Severe agitated delirium requiring intensive

nursing and medical management.

Inpatient hospice care is intended for a short

duration of time to address symptom needs.

Hospice Center staff work with family

members closely throughout the patient’s

stay to establish a plan of care to return the

patient safely to their home when symptoms

are managed.
