Introduction

The government announced in July that “It is our plan that allpupils, in all year groups, will return to school full-time fromthe beginning of the autumn term.”

The rationale set out by the government is as follows, “Theprevalence of coronavirus (COVID-19) has decreased, ourNHS Test and Trace system is up and running, and we areclear about the measures that need to be in place to createsafer environments within schools.”

“The risk to children themselves of becoming severely ill from coronavirus (COVID-19) is very low and there are negative health impacts of being out of school. We know that school is a vital point of contact for public health and safeguarding services that are critical to the wellbeing of children and families.”

“Given the improved position, the balance of risk is now overwhelmingly in favour of children returning to school. For the vast majority of children, the benefits of being back in school far outweigh the very low risk from coronavirus (COVID-19).”



What about Social Distancing?




• Our plans in bringing all students back are based on minimising “the number of contacts that a pupil has during the school day” and “implementing the system of controls outlined (in the guidance) to reduce the risk of transmission. If schools follow the guidance set out here, they can be confident they are managing risk effectively.”




Essential Measures

The guidance sets out essential measures and these include:

– a requirement that people who are ill stay at home

– robust hand and respiratory hygiene

– enhanced cleaning arrangements

– active engagement with NHS Test and Trace

– formal consideration of how to reduce contacts and maximise distancing between those in school wherever possible and minimise potential for contamination so far as is reasonably practicable




The following must be in place all the time

1) Minimise contact with individuals who are unwell by ensuring thatthose who have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or who havesomeone in their household who does, do not attend school

2) Clean hands thoroughly more often than usual

3) Ensure good respiratory hygiene by promoting the ‘catch it, bin it, killit’ approach

4) Introduce enhanced cleaning, including cleaning frequently touchedsurfaces often, using standard products such as detergents and bleach




“How contacts are reduced will depend on the school’scircumstances and will (as much as possible) include:

grouping children together

avoiding contact between groups

arranging classrooms with forward facing desks

staff maintaining distance from pupils and other staff asmuch as possible”




Minimise contact between individuals and maintain social

distancing wherever possible

• Year group “bubbles” – no mixing in school between year groups.

• In year 7 students will be taught in tutor groups

• Double lessons where possible

• Staggered breaks and lunches

• Staggered finish from 2.50




“passing briefly in the corridor or playground is low risk,

schools should avoid creating busy corridors, entrances and

exits”

We have changed exits and entrances to classrooms so that

students will only pass each other outside.

It is crucial that ALL students use the correct entrances and exits and follow the one way system




Expectations of Students

• Maintain distance from others where possible.• Wash hands/use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day and every time they

enter a classroom.• Desks have been arranged so that students are not facing each other.• No shouting.• No physical contact with others.• It is crucial that ALL students use the correct entrances and exits and follow the one

way system and go straight to their next lesson.• Bring in equipment – no sharing of equipment• Arrive on time.• Bring a bag and coat.




UniformStudents will be expected to wear full school uniform.

The government guidance states, “Uniform can play avaluable role in contributing to the ethos of a school andsetting an appropriate tone. Uniforms do not need to becleaned any more often than usual, nor do they need to becleaned using methods which are different from normal.”

When they have PE students should come to school in theirPE kit. They can wear blue joggers and a school/blue hoody




Lunch

• We will offer a full service for Lunch

• We will not be using the biometric system for paying for food, all students will be issued with a swipe card

• Please use the SQUID system to load money on from home




Lockers

• We will not be using lockers




Remote Learning

• Classcharts

• Microsoft TEAMS

• If we do go into lockdown then students will follow their normal timetable at home and access resources and teacher support through Microsoft TEAMS




Getting to school

• Schools should encourage parents, staff and pupils to walk or cycle to school if at all possible




Dedicated school transport

• the advice for passengers on public transport to adopt

a social distance of two metres from people outside

their household or support bubble, or a ‘one metre

plus’ approach where this is not possible, will not apply from the autumn term on dedicated transport.




School buses

• We will run normal service

• Buses will be zoned into year groups

• They must wear face coverings

• Updates will be on our website




Attendance Expectations

• Missing out on more time in the classroom risks pupils

falling further behind. Those with higher overall

absence tend to achieve less well in both primary and

secondary school. School attendance will therefore be

mandatory again from the beginning of the autumn

term. This means from that point, the usual rules on school attendance will apply,




BEHAVIOUR INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

REINFORCING THE POSITIVESAt Selston High we are extremely proud of the positive culture we have created.

93% of points recorded on Class Charts are positive.

This culture of positivity will continue to be embedded through:

• Pledge awards

• Above and Beyond awards

• Positive postcards

• Class Chart rewards

• First attention to best conduct

• Verbal praise and recognition

It is really important to us that during this difficult time we remain positive and continue to do the right thing!

REMINDER SYSTEM

At SHS we use a scripted response to behaviour management. The response from all staff will be calm and consistent to avoid escalation of behaviour issues.

More information regarding the script and reminder system can be found on the transition page of the school website under the Year 7 information assembly video.

We issue sanctions for behaviour using a system of reminders:

1st reminder/consequence 1 – Verbal Reminder of the expectations

2nd reminder/consequence 2 – Formal behaviour warning logged on ClassCharts and communicated to parents

Consequence 3 – 30 minute afterschool detention issued

Consequence 4 – 1 hour SLT detention issued

Consequence 5 – Isolation until 4pm

Consequence 6 – Fixed term exclusion

COVID-19 RELATED SANCTIONS

If students breach the behaviour code put in place to keep everyone safe during the Covid-19 pandemic a decision will need to be reached as to whether the violation was accidental or deliberate.

If students deliberately violate the rules designed to keep everyone safe this will automatically be a consequence 5 leading to isolation. If a student is isolated for a deliberate breach of Covid-19 rules then a pre-exclusion meeting will be held with parents the following day to discuss next steps and support needed as a second deliberate breach in a half term will lead to exclusion.

An example of an accidental violation would be not observing social distancing rules briefly due to a lapse in concentration, a reminder will be issued and the ladder of consequences followed.

An example of a deliberate violation would be making physical contact with another student by grabbing them or coughing in someone's face.

DETENTIONS

As year groups can no longer mix with each other, normal classroom detentions will be replaced with the following year group detentions. ALL detentions will now take place after school.

FORMAL BEHAVIOUR WARNING

A formal behaviour warning will replace the break detention at consequence two.

If a student reaches a second reminder in lesson, they will be issued with a formal behaviour warning which will be logged on ClassCharts.

This will be communicated to parents by Class Charts and a text sent home at the end of the day.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

Students will always be expected keep their distance from others where possible.

When in the school building there will be markings to help with distancing.

Where distancing is not possible, mitigation will be added.

Mitigation includes:

Screens in computer rooms

Forward facing classrooms

Increased ventilation where possible

Students will be escorted down to break and lunch venues to ensure they are complying with distancing.

NO PHYSICAL CONTACT WILL BE ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

UNIFORM

Full school uniform will be expected in September – full list available on the school website.

Due to entry and exit points for classrooms being outside All students must have a waterproof coat with a hood which is suitable for inclement weather (this does not include hoodies).

Pastoral and Well-being support at SHS

All young people have a tutor who will get to know them well and be the first port of call for any mental health and well-being concerns

HOY have all undergone trauma and bereavement training so they can support children who are struggling

All staff will receive mental health training and we have a mental health lead on the Senior Team and a trained mental health first aider

SSC have a wealth of expertise in a range of mental health issues including anxiety, bereavement, self harm, isolation, eating disorders – targeted interventions are delivered where needed

Anti-bullying mentors and student leaders to support others

Established mentoring programme to provide additional support more vulnerable students

Additional support as a response to

Covid-19

Virtual Progress meetings have given us information about those young people who are flourishing and those who are struggling

This information will be passed onto all subject teachers and recorded on inclusive planning grids and taken into account when planning learning

The pastoral team will analyse the data and identify students who need additional support e.g. bereavement or anxiety interventions

The Student Support Team will work directly with young people and families who are finding things particularly difficult and refer onto specialist services where necessary

2020-21 Selston High School will deliver regular mental health and well-being training to staff so they are in the best possible position to support young people

Above all we will listen to students and parent carers and take into account their views

What young people need

Research indicates that for most young people the greatest need is for a

return to routine and normality as much as is possible

Most basic need for all of us is to feel safe – we will create a safe, secure,

regulated, predictable environment

Positive relationships founded on mutual respect – inherent in all our values

Provide additional targeted support to those in need – students can self-refer,

be referred by parents or by school staff

Be open about mental health – dedicate teaching through PSHE and

enrichment and a culture in which we recognise it is good to talk

What parents can do to help

Start training your young person back into a good sleep pattern – at least 8 hours with a good morning and bedtime routine

Reduce screen time to prepare students for school expectations

Encourage regular exercise to get rid of physical tension and improve blood flow to the brain

Ensure young people come equipped with everything needed for the day: stationary, coat, bag, water bottle to reduce anxiety and conflict

Prepare your young person for the changes by familiarising them with other covid-secure environments e.g. supermarket

Help your child to understand the importance of following all health and safety measures whilst being balanced about the risk to themselves

Talk to your young person about how they feel about the return to school, accepting any anxieties they may have, providing reassurance and ensuring the school is informed of any issues particularly any bullying issues

What Parents can do to help us

• Make sure your child attends on time, they should be in school by 8.25 so that they are in lessons by 8.30.

• No student will be allowed on site before 8am.• Make sure they come to school every day with equipment, they need to bring a pencil

case, pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, compass, protractor and a rubber as a minimum.• Make sure they come with a coat as the one way system will mean that they will have

to go outside at lesson changeovers. If it is raining they will get wet!• They will also need a bag to carry equipment and books.• Provide them with a filled water bottle as there will be limited access to water

fountains during the day.




Prior to returning to school it would be helpful to discuss the following:

• The importance of following our rules about no physical contact with other pupils, no shouting and no sharing of items.

• The importance of following the one way system and lining up.

• The importance of regular hand washing/use of hand sanitiser.

• The “catch it, bin it, kill it” approach and bringing tissues to school.
