Pastor’s Note

Peace Be With You!

Happy Birthday Today we con-clude the Easter Season by cele-brating Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church. Fifty days ago, we celebrated Easter. The Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles in the Upper Room to speak in various languages. They were changed

forever. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apos-tles we read how the Apostles are able to make bold proclamation of God’s word. In the Second Reading from Paul to the Corinthians, we read that the Spirit gives many gifts to the church and it enriches people of faith. In the Gospel of John, the Risen Lord appears to the frightened disciples granting them peace. He breathes on them and gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit. The commissioning involves sending his disci-ples out to continue his work preaching and teaching.

As we begin a new month and reach this mid-year of 2020 and slowly open up churches and businesses and try to do our best to retain somewhat of a routine with caution, let us be open and filled with the Holy Spirit to guide us, and give us strength and share that spirit with others. Let us be joyful with the birth of our Church to continue proclaiming the Gospel each day with joyful hope.

Peace Be With You! After two months of having the church doors closed and unable to have daily or Sunday Masses, it gives me great pleasure to announce that effective Monday, June 1 we will officially "“reopen” ,but with precau-tions. As we welcome people back to church, it is im-portant to keep in mind the Covid-19 is still a great threat to public health. Social distancing, hand wash-ing, and wearing masks continue to be a regular prac-tice. Bishop Zubik and the Diocese of Pittsburgh have issued a reopening guide titled “Moving Forward To-gether” that supports Pastors and Parish Teams with the return to on-site ministry and worship. It is im-portant to stress that Bishop Zubik has dispensed every one of the Sunday obligation indefinitely. Peo-ple who are 65 or older or have existing health con-cerns are asked to stay home and not attend Mass until further notice. We will continue to live stream Mass on a weekly basis and parishioners will be able to continue to mail or drop off offertory envelopes at the parish office or participate in the online giving pro-gram, Faith Direct. We appreciate your continued financial support. COVID-19 Task Force Part of the reopening guide suggests each parish identify a safety team comprised of clergy, staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of implementing and moni-toring the safety guidelines. I am pleased to appoint the following parishioners to our task force: Linda At-kins R.N., Jeanne Clancey R.N., Buffy Halle R.N.,

Dr. Bernadette Harris, Dr. Deborah McMahon, and Toni Polite R.N.

These six women all have tremendous medical back-grounds and wonderful insight on parishioners” safety. They will be assisted by Mr. Chris Luther from Inter-state Maintenance Services of Greentree who will be advising us on cleaning, sanitation, and supplies. I am grateful for these volunteers and their expertise in these very difficult times as we try to move forward and reopen, but still being cautious. Interim Mass Schedule We will follow the interim Mass schedule until further notice:

Daily Mass - Monday through Saturday 9 am at St. Bede. St. Bede Church will be open daily 8 am to Noon. The restroom will be open only during the schedule Mass time, then locked. The church will be cleaned and sanitized each day. The Sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharistic Ado-ration will remain on Saturdays 9:30 am-10:30am. (If there is a funeral, Reconciliation and Adoration will be cancelled). The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available by appointment. Weekend Mass times: Saturday Vigil Mass - 4 pm St. James Sunday 9 am - Mother of Good Counsel Sunday 11 am - St. Bede Mass occupancy will be limited and the churches will be cleaned and sanitized after each use. The parish office on S. Dallas Avenue remains open 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Congratulations to all of our 2020 Grade School, High School and College Graduates. We are proud of you. Best Wishes to Marie Jo Marks first grade teacher at St. Bede School for twenty- one years of service as she prepares for retirement! We welcome Ms. Jessica Pais to full time faculty status. Happy Birthday to Fr. James celebrating his birthday on May 31.

Father Taylor’s Reflection

Lord send forth your spirit to re-new the face of the Earth. The Feast of Pentecost has always been special with my family. We had come from a faith tradition where we regularly celebrated the Spirit. It is such a powerful state-ment to proclaim we are spirit filled people. Because we are

human, we are weak. Because we share in God’s life, we are strong. In order to know this we have to see with the eyes of faith. When we gather the Spirit takes over. We are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our church has suffered much over the last few years pri-marily because of sin and human weakness. But the Spirit is as strong as ever. As we continue to be chal-lenged by the pandemic, we have reached out to oth-ers in new ways of spirit filled service. As we slowly and cautiously reopen our churches and parish minis-tries, we have to be as vigilant as ever. The Spirit of St. Mary Magdalene parish is alive and well.

St. Mary Magdalene Parish Walk Team is organizing for this year’s Walk for a Healthy

Community hosted by Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Each year, our walk team and their sponsors raise enough funds to cover our costs for grocery products for a year at the Gr. Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for our pantries at Holy Rosary, our Social Ministry Center in Wilkinsburg, and our distribution to seniors at the Eva Mitchell Hi-Rise in Lincoln-Lemington.

This year’s walk will be a little different because of the pandemic. The walk will be a virtual walk (but a real walk). Our team will walk in small groups or individually between May 9 and June 30 for the 5 K event (on a treadmill, park or trail, or around the neighborhoods where we live).

This is a critical fundraiser for our parish pantries and needed this coming fiscal year (July 2020 – June 2021). Please participate in whatever way you can!

It is not too late to join our team or become a sponsor, visit http:/hcf.convio.net/goto/stmarymagdaleneteam or make a check out to Gr. Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and put “The Walk” on the memo line and send it or drop it off at the rectory, or call Joyce, Team Captain, at 412.271.8414.

Thanks to all who have already registered and/or al-ready generously sponsored a walker or the team!

Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions (Martyred June 3, 1886)

Charles Lwanga, “Master of Pages” in Uganda and lay catechist, courageously led about forty teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a forty-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Christian faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead.

King Mwanga, himself barely twenty, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who, now Christians, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive; the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had often shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his executioner!

In 1964, Paul VI canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions, recalling the heroism of early Christianity’s African martyrs.
