condition.” said Louise Paquette, Chief Executive Officer ofthe NE LHIN.

The Island Clippings has made inquiries about how much ofthe Sault Area Hospital’s ‘windfall’ will be spent on improve-ments to the Matthews Memorial and Thessalon hospitalsites. At the time we had to close off for printing this week’sissue, we had been informed by a SAH official that “signifi-cant funding” had indeed been earmarked for the twosatellite hospitals, although specifics would have to followwhen he returned to his office.

We’ll continue to follow this story and provide more detailsas they become available.

Letters to the Editor printed in the Island Insight Columnreflect the views of the writer and not necessarily those of theIsland Clippings.

Hero and Zero

My “thanks” to the Zero who picked up a snapping turtle andbrought it to the ball diamond by the hockey rink this pastweek, for the kids to see and poke at with bats and bottles.

I am not happy that its protection under the “Species at Riskin Ontario” (SARO) was ignored. I am saddened by its trans-port to this kids’ sporting event and subsequent harassment.

Moving it off the roadway would have been enough to save itfrom being struck by another vehicle. Going the extra step andbringing it to the kids for genuine exposure to this species fortheir viewing enjoyment will not be forgotten. For this you area Hero. ‘Bravo’, What next? A porcupine, or maybe some cranechicks to poke at?

It takes approximately 15-20 years for them to reach maturity, far less than the individual who, when asked where he pickedit up, did not care enough to share. Its return to where it came

from could not be achieved by either the MNR, the HumaneSociety or the OPP who were contacted that evening bymyself, as none could guess at where to return it that eveningfor this lack of information.

The lack of respect for this species of turtle, that cannotretract its head into its shell for protection is almost asshameful as blaming those who wanted to protect it duringand after the kids’ event.

If someone in the community does not understand theconsequences of bringing wild species to kids’ events, ortheir protection outside of a legal hunting season, it is up tothe community to educate them. The attempt to do so theother night was ignored.

WELL IT IS GOOD TO BE BACk at workand the place has wintered well. The bunniesare back and the birds are doing their thing.

I would like to take this opportunity to apolo-gize for resigning from The MatthewsMemorial Hospital Association and The 1812Committee. I have been advised to reduce thestress in my life. Both groups are interestingand important to this Island and I am sorry tohave to give them up.

But back to the Museum, I would like toupdate you on the Workshop Project. Lastyear Gloria Matthews generously donated themoney to build a much needed workshop inmemory of her husband Stephen Matthews. With the board’s support, Bucky Garside’sprofessional assistance, Soo Mill’s donation of$350.00 worth of materials and MarkHenderson’s generous offer to install theworkshop free of charge, we are beginning theconstruction of what I believe will be a bigasset to your museum. We will be able torestore and treat artifacts, hold workshopsand make room in the drive shed for moreartifacts. We have had to use space in there forstorage of damaged artifacts for the last 10years.

I am looking forward to a busy excitingseason at the museum.

Tea Day is our first event on Sunday July 10th.We will be paying tribute to the AnishinaabePeople and unveiling the Ceremonial WolfRobe donated to the museum by Sally Hookein 2008. Sally and I have been waitingpatiently for this. As our Tea Day Tributes areplanned well in advance, we have had to waituntil 2011.

The Teddy Bear Picnic is our second event onSunday July 23rd. Lots of fun, games andeducational events planned. HopefullySmokey the Bear will be back if he isn’tfighting fires.

A Window Through Time is our third eventon Sunday August 6th. Thanks to CherylAlloway who writes, produces, and directs, ashort theatrical performance based on theactual history of St. Joseph Island. Cheryl andher friends and family plan and execute the

Yipes! What’s that Lurking in theGrass?

LAST WEEK, one of St. Joseph Township’s grass cuttersnoticed something strange in the deep grass ahead of whereshe was cutting. She stopped and got off her riding mower tocheck it out. And it’s a good thing she did!

This little critter was barely visible but thanks to the younglady’s alertness, escaped any harm. At last report, the fawnwas happily re-united with its mother – and hopefullyfinding a better place to take a snooze!

Business As Usual During Mail Strike!AS PART OF ITS LABOUR DISPUTE with Canada Post, theCanadian Union of Postal Workers’ (CUPW) has adopted astrategy of national 24 hour rotating strikes, rather than have theentire country victimized by simultaneous strike action. To date, the union has targeted Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal, Monctonand Victoria.

The Island Clippings will continue publishing as usual during thisuncertain time. Should CUPW’s strike action affect our area, (andwe learn about it in time), we will deliver the Clippings to storesand outlets on the Island and the nearby North Shore, where ourreaders can pick them up.
